I am seeking information on the family of Benjamin Moore (may be known as Thomas Benjamin Moore)born in Albermarle in 1763/64. Father maybe either a Jesse Moore or a John Moore. He left the county some time in the 1790s and settled in Burke Cty NC. We have family documentation of his family and life in NC but are trying to trace it back to is parents in Albemarle VA.

This sounds like the Benjamin Harris family of "Mountain Grove" in Southern Alb. He was a grandson of Mathew Harris and Elizabeth Lee. Capt John Harris "of Viewmont" (the richest person of Alb. at one time) was a brother of the Benjamin of Mountain Grove. Robert Barclay married the widow of Capt John Harris and they were the parents of James Barclay who owned Monticello. Mathew Harris who m. Elizabeth Tate was another brother of the Benjamin etc. I did some work on mainly the Mathew Harris family at "canaan" near warren in last years CVGA heritage newsletters which are available from CVGA

There is the following marraige bond in Albemarle:
(in folder 155) 1881 m. bonds

D. Estis? or Estes? Scott 21 (African-American) son of Surry? (hard to read)(I assume Scott) and Betsy. married Sally Jones 16 dau Robert and Alice Jones. S. Jones was the minister (I assume Spotswood Jones since he married so many people but there was a B.S. Jones, Minister who I think is a different man ) The bond says they were married at Wake Forest Church

I am not sure where you got the idea there is a family bible. Other official documents give places of birth for this man. We know he was born in Albemarle, we are unsure of Richard Pierce Wood's family. We are also aware that the counties of Amherst, Nelson and Albemarle were all one county for a time. We know his children, their families until present day. Most still live in the same area (from Rockfish to Amherst). I am always looking for connections to Albemarle and the Wood name. That is why I listed the question. There is only one male descendant. We will soon be doing a DNA test and that should help.

Hi, Sorry it's taken me so long to reply, I was off the ancestry until just recently and found your post. Ernest L. Harlow was married to my great grandmother Lucy M. Morris. and he was my Grandmother's( Mary E. Morris Sprouse ) step-father. It is Lucy that I'm digging information for. Also I remember G-pa Harlow when I was a kid...He lived with my Aunt Louise Johnson in Scottsville, Va. when he died and is buried in Melton's cemetery there. He died in the early 1960's if I remember correctly. Let me know what info you have about any of these please. Thanks again, Rhonda

Very interesting isn't it.
The Thomas Parks being the nephew should read Henry Parks, the writer of the history about this killing had the name wrong, unless he had two nephews.
My source for this statement, being Henry Parks is in June of 1865 the Rev William Justice Parks wrote his memoirs, he goes in detail about his family and his father being with a uncle William who was killed in Powell's Valley, Va.
Gay Nix

"History of Scott County, Virginia"

pg. 80
"In May, 1776, Gen. Martin returned home, promising to return in four weeks. The four weeks had expired, and we had heard nothing from Gen. Martin. The settlers at Priests and Mump's Fort had all left, and some of our men. Days rolled on and we could hear nothing from Martin nor the settlement. We became alarmed at our situation. We knew that something of great moment had taken place or Martin would either have returned or sent a messenger out to let us know why he did not come at the appointed time. As our number had decreased to about ten, and we could not hear from Martin, we held a counsel, determinded to remain three days longer, and if we could hear nothing from the settlement, in that time, to start for home.
The day we held our counsel, William Parks, one of our number, insisted upon our going some eight miles below the fort, and put up a few poles in the shape of a house, kill some trees, dig some holes in the ground, and plant his corn, so as to secure a corn right, and return the third morning time enough to start with us, if we should (leave) for the settlement. We very reluctantly gave our consent. On the same evening, Parks, his nephew, Thomas, and his negroe man set out to secure his corn right. The third morning after Parks left, the day he promised to return, to our great surprise young Parks came, and informed us that his uncle had left the evening before to kill some meat. Shortly after his leaving he heard him shout, and had heard nothing from him since. I and two others had set out with young Parks, and, on arriving at his cabin, he showed us the way his uncle went. We found his track,
pg.81
and followed it with great care. After going about one mile, we came to where some Indians had been lying among some limestone rocks, on the Kentucky Trace about fifty yards from where the Indians had been, we saw old Parks lying dead on his face. On examining him, we found he was shot through the heart. From his tracks, he must have run some thirty yards from where he was shot. He was scalped, and a war club left sunk in his brain. We skinned some tough bark, with it lashed the body of old Parks to a pole, and two of us, with an end of the pole on our shoulders, carried him to his cabin, and buried him."

Another source states as follows: "In the fall of this year [1777], General George Rogers Clark traveled from Kentucky over the 'Wilderness Road,' on his way to Richmond, in company with a young lawyer by the name of John Gabriel Jones, and reached Mump's Fort in Powell's Valley about ten days subsequent to the killing, by the Indians, of a settler by the name of Parks." [in a previous post I had mentioned Seminole and Cherokee...I had mis-spoken, they were Shawnee and Cherokee]

"Where is Puppie's Creek and Carters Mill?"
...Amherst Co., Virginia.
My next opportunity to get to Amherst Co. will be in the spring. I will research what I can if i am able to and may be able to answer the rest of your questions at that time.

Bobbie

Linda,
My address is Gay Nix
1526 W. Hull st
Denison, Texas
75020
The reason why I am so interested in the DNA is because my cousin who has the same line as me, did not match with some other Parks researchers that claim to go back to Thomas who died in Albemarle Co, Va. It has to be a male Parks to do the DNA. A DNA kit is sent to your home and you swab their mouth and send it in and then they send you the results.
So what I am saying is I need to prove that we do go back to Thomas and someone has their line wrong.
That's why I would like to find one of George's descendants where we could compare the DNA match, that would prove the right connection, since we have a strong paper trail to Thomas.
I would pay for it to be done.
Thank you so much for sending me the Rev War papers.
Gay Nix

I do have a copy of Samuel's personal statement about his brother George. He gave it inregard to George's wife's application for a Widows Pension after George died. She applied after she came to TX with her son's. She is buried in Lancaster. Send me your address znmd I will send you a copy..
I will have to search for the Bible record . I have thousands of resource materials that are not catalogued properly and now have severe eye problems that really slows me down but I will look for it . It was sent to me some 25 years ago when I was really researching daily. There are so many Parks descendants you would not believeand one of them sent it to me.I am suspicious of those DNA testings. I have more than enough legal acceptable proofs to pprove my lineage/ Joinig the D.A.R> is like jping the CIA!!Yes my George is the one who was distingused as a 16 year old Revolutionary Soldier who save Henry. George had a brother named Samuel and I believe I have seen referencces to the fact that Henry was his COusin. George went to Monroe Co., Ind after the war and that is where he is buried and his grave is so marked for his War Service and in fact there are other soldiers (friends) sburied there as well. WHere is this Powels Valey yo mentioned? George's son , Meredith and his family went to Texas in 1848 and they took Land Grants in Lancaster, Dallas Co. TX . There were 6 generations of Parks who lived on that Homestead for 100 years 9 of which I was the last of the 6 generations) until the farm had to to sold and we moved into Dallas. We were the only family to ever inhabit that land and when we sold it, it was destroyed and made into commercial property. Many of other Parks ancestors came to Dallas Co. during that period and there are literally thousands of descendants in Texas today that descend from Thomas Parks. I have letters from family members in the 1850's This lineage is well documented, Wills, Land records, Historical documents,Land records, Revolutionary records, etc.Of whom do you descend, I will look for references. You may reach me at lindah12@flash.net

My family is still searching for ancestors of Richard Pierce Wood my ggggrandfather (I think) from Albemarle County living in Nelson County. Son, William Dabney Wood and grandson Richard Nelson Wood to my grandfather Thomas Screll Wood. I believe he must be connected to Josiah Wood somehow. The family home place is just over the mountain in Nelson County from Nellysford/Wintergreen area toward Lynchburg. It is a small community known as Bryant, Virginia on Rt. 151. My great aunt told us that the family is English and Irish. Richard P. Wood married a Bryant as did his grandson, Richard Nelson Wood. William D. Wood married a Tomlin. My grandfather married a Massie. If any of this strikes a bell please post.

First to answer your questions.
The library I mentioned is here in Denison, Texas.
I am Gay Nix and a descendant of Henry Parks who was born in 1758 Albemarle Co, Va, also a Revolutionary Soldier.
I have a cousin who is off the same line and submitted his DNA and so did a another cousin who did the same, and they did not match up with other Parks who say they are from Thomas of Albemarle Co, Va.
We have documents and sources that would appear that our Henry was son of John Parks who was paying taxes on a Samuel and Henry.
One source we have is Henry went to Powells Valley with a uncle who was killed by Indians.
I do not know who the people are who turned their DNA in and claim they are from Thomas. Something is not right here.
I am trying to figure this all out.
Where is this old bible entry you are talking about?
Is your George the one that helped Henry back home from being wounded at Kings Mountain?

Gay Nix

The articlr is in Va, Magazine of History Vol 35 page 239. I haven't found it yet but in my notes in my PAF filr, that is the redweenxce. I have made an error though and need to correct it! Sarah Wingfield was married to Thomas ' son Rev. Joh Parks Sr. He was also married to Mary Sharp according to an old faded Bible entry. I do so apologize for the error and appreciate the chance to correct it. I am a member of the D.A.R. and am proven in through the Parks lineage. ( George Parks of the revolutionary War fame) Who are you and what Library do you speak of? I would be interested in the Wingfield ancestry. Thanks Linda Hart

Mr. Towler, thanks for taking the time for looking up that information. I have been looking through records via inter-library loan. I have seen many records with many listed Goinses. I have yet to make a real connection other than the early 1820 Order Books for Albemarle with John, Fountain, Thomas, Henderson and Michael.

I have tried to approach this conundrum by looking at the Goinses, the places, the families or persons named in Mr. Ervin Jordan's article. They include Bob Rodes, Nathaniel Thompson, Shadwell Mills, John Davis, Blackwell, John Dunn, Buck Mountain. Frank Maghee, H. Price and A. Whithead.

Hopefully there are records somewhere showing some interaction between the Goinses and persons or places listed.

Hello Sam,

First and foremost thank you for your reply. You asked:.....................................................

"Michael married in 1835 you don't say when he was born but lets say he was 20 or 1815 he was born. Assuming he had a brother/sister who stayed in Alb. What is known about Samuel Vaughan?, Charles & Matilda, or Harry & Jinney. Would he have had a brother or sister b. 1840s or 1850s? very less likely. Of the places they were married (written on the m. bonds) I don't see any matches with Ervin Jordan's list."..............................................................................................................................................................................

Michael was born say about 1805 or 1806. He was listed with John, Foutain, Henderson and Thomas in an Order Book for Fredericksville Parish circa 1823. He left Virginia for Ohio and the first record I have is the 1835 marriage record in Belmont County, OHIO May 17, 1835. Again I also found him the 1840 Census for Ohio as well. So I believe when he was about thirty years old when he married in Ohio. His 1886 obituary, from Belmont County, Ohio says he was from Albemarle County, Virginia.
The Order and Minute books is probably the most likely place of finding something. If there was a deed or will it would have already have been found I would assume. For example there are 16 Goings mentioned in Alb. Minute Book for 1832 pg 251,: I went though the Order and Minute books from 1800-1900 abstracting info. I didn't do all the free black registrations because Bob Vernon has already done that to my understanding.

Going, Thomas, (12 years old, 4 ft 5+ in tall, Indian Complexion) son of Mahulda Going, (37 years old, 5 ft 4 light complexion) gives evidence of his freedom. Sixteen Goings are listed on this date and page 6 Aug 1833 (1832 Minute Book pg 251)

The post war m. bonds of Alb. between 1865-1880 reveal about 14 Goens, etc. marraiges:
Hezekiah Goings b. 1825 son Samuel Vaughan & Patsy Goings
Malichia Gowing b. 1837 dau Charles & Matilda
Henry Goens b. 1838 son Harry & Jinney
Henderson Goens b. 1842 son Henderson Sr. & Agnes
Janetta Goens b. 1842 son Henderson Sr. & Agnes
Lucy Goings b. 1844 dau Robert & Patsy
Catharine Goingsb. 1847 dau Robert & Patsy
Robert S. Going b. 1847 son William H. & Susan Jane
Sarah Goens b. 1850 dau Charles & Matilda
Robert G. Goens b. 1851 son Robert & Patsy
James Goens b. 1851 son Sherrard & Lena
Jane Fortune b. 1854 dau Saluda Goens
Lucy Goin b. 1855 dau Robert A. & Lucinda
Ann Goens b. 1859 dau Kiah & Sarah
William Alfred Goens b. 1859 son ----- & Sarah Goens

Michael married in 1835 you don't say when he was born but lets say he was 20 or 1815 he was born. Assuming he had a brother/sister who stayed in Alb. What is known about Samuel Vaughan?, Charles & Matilda, or Harry & Jinney. Would he have had a brother or sister b. 1840s or 1850s? very less likely. Of the places they were married (written on the m. bonds) I don't see any matches with Ervin Jordan's list.
In 1866 Malichia Gowing married Rice Keller "at Sycamore Grove (church I assume)
In 1875 Sarah Goens marries at Sycamore Grove. both were children of Charles & matilda
In 1876 James Goens marries "at Rice Kellor's"... (he being son of Sherrard). This seems to say Sherrard and Charles may have been brothers.
In going through the 1885 Alb. m. bonds I saw the license for William Lankford. He is the guy Lankford road in Charlottesville is named after. It is a road that connects to Ridge St. He started the first telephone Company in C-ville and later had a nursery. I suppose Lankford Road started out being his driveway to the nursery? His m. bond states he was born in Maryland and he m. ---- Walters a sister of John L. Walters who lived around the corner from him on Ridge St. @ 1900. Prof. Maurice Cox lives in John L. Walters' house as of 2009.

Spencer Page of mixed blood in 1870 census next to Woodson Smith, I can't find in 1880 census. There is a John Page 58 (african-american) and wife Patsy next to David Hays 60 years old and Sally his wife in 1880 census. It is a leap but Patsy might be the wife of John page since there is a known connection of the Hays and Page families.

Of these 4 people, Lewis and Patsey are very common names. Your best two clues are Woodson and Squire which are rare first names. Assuming Woodson lived until the 1870 census- which is an assumption- the best possibility is Woodson Smith 45 years old. The other fact in 1870 census that is interesting is Woodson Smith is adjacent to Spencer Page 50 years old of mixed blook (part white and black). There was a Squire Burgess and Squire Blakey post war in Albemarle. Squire Blakey was in the northern part of Alb. and Squire Burgess was near Monticello at John Porters (the farm later known as "kenwood" across from Monticello. I don't know of another fact for this Squire Burgess to be the Squire. Your best clue is Woodson Smith and Spencer Page next to him
