To my knowledge, my ancestor, William Stewardson, didn't work with a tannery. I actually have no idea what he did, but am following some evidence that he may have been involved with Bremo Plantation at some point. He came over from England some time between 1790 and 1820, I believe. I have some letters between William and Mr. Cocke, who owned Bremo, and it seems William was involved in helping to get the livestock and plantation in place and thriving. Thanks for the info on New York - that's pretty much what I assumed had happened, but wanted to make sure. It makes sense that William settled in Nelson County, as did several generations after him.
