Was wondering if anyone has employee records and/or pictures of the Sheldon Marble company cira 1870-1900. My ancestors (McDowell & Seaton) worked there. If anyone has any group photos they may post it would be great.
Also found out I'm related indirectly to the Sheldons.

Thanks

I am attempting to understand the relationship between these three family lines. Specifically how the Ladds fit in. My great-grandfather's name was George Ladd Burgess who married Ida May Bump. George was the son of Ira Reuben Burgess. I have some holes in my understanding that the Ladd relationship might fill those in. Can you help me?

I just moved to Rutland and was surprise to find there is no genealogy society. I would be interest in meeting other researchers in Rutland to share and trade ideas.
The Family History library south of Rutland would be a handy place to meet. They are open from 10 am to 1pm on Tuesday and Thursday morning. They have resourses, internet, tables, and chairs. Meeting with other reseachers is helpful as we can share new internet resources, help each other brainstorm ideas for brick walls, help each other with software, etc.
The public library could be another idea. I am open to suggestion. I will be at the Family History center Thursday May 9th. Hope so see you there. Bring your lap top.
Donna

Hello all Colman/Coleman researchers in Vermont,
While I myself am not related to these Colman/Coleman families, I am researching my maternal cousins’ paternal ancestry. I have traced Henry R Coleman/Colman b 1839 (Marriage license is Coleman and tombstone and censuses listed he and his wife as Colman) to Brandon, Vermont. His father, Ira Coleman/Colman was born in Vermont in About 1808 and I am looking for Ira’s parents. Has anyone run across the children’s names for Phinehas Colman of Tinmouth, Rutland, VT as shown in the 1810 and 1800 federal censuses? Or Antony Coleman found in the 1790 Federal Census for Pittsford, Rutland, VT? Thanks for your help.
I agree with your posting. Alva Hubbard was the son of Jesse Hubbard, Sr. and Mary Codner, born about 1797 in Rutland County, Vermont. In land records of Vermont, Alva Hubbard gives rights of house to his parents Jesse and Mary Hubbard and receives a lease on the property, dated 1 March 1824. His parents were living in Middleton, Rutland, Vermont. In that record, Alva's name is spelled Alva and Alvey.

In the 1850 census of Middleton, Rutland, Vermont, Truman or Freeman Kilburn, age 45, and Elizabeth Kilburn age 34 are living with Matilda age 17, George age 13, Hannah, James, William, Edgar and George. The death record of Matilda Hubbard (dated 25 May 1907 in Brandon, Vermont) mentions that her mother was Elizabeth Spooner and her father was Freeman Kilburn. Maybe you have that record.

Thanks for your email address. Mine is bill.jonice@gmail.com.

In rechecking my later notes---after I posted the original query---I went on to ascertain that Merrit was the son of Alvah Hubbard, Sr and Mary Ann/Polly Dye, of Middletown Springs, Rutland Co, VT found in the 1850 Middletown, Rutland Co, VT census.

According to Fort Ann, Washington Co, NY vitals: Merrit Hubbard died 26 November 1893 in Fort Ann, NY

Just put together, this morning, that Matilda Hubbard is the daughter of Truman Kilburn and Elizabeth Spooner.

You're welcome to email me directly--makes things easier for more, in depth discussion; also should records exchange be desired. genefrog52@yahoo.com

I am also interested in the Merrit & Matilda Hubbard Family.
An added bit of information is the following marriage record about Hulda Hubbard, daughter of Merrit and Matilda:
Hulda Hubbard, age 23, born Middleton, Vermont, dau. of Hiram and Matilda Hubbard, married George Fredette on 1 July 1894. Mr. John Quay, preacher, of Foresdale (Forest Dale?), Vermont officiated. The record was created in Tinmouth, Vermont.

I don't know why Hulda's marriage record reports her father as Hiram. As far as I can tell, there was no other Hulda Hubbard who was born in Middleton, Vermont about 1871. Let's keep researching this family.

I was curious so I took a look at the 1869 Atlas, too. Not a lot of help, but Clement, Parker and Gilson properties were north of the church while Sheldon and Slason property was just south of the church. I tried to find other references to Long Sault tenement but couldn't locate any. Would think Rebel Hill would be a logical location!

My father often spoke of "The Long Sue? Soo? So it was obviously rebuilt or the same name was attached to another tenement. Couldnt quite get the location from this article. Near the (Irish) Church? "Rebel Hill" was just northwest of the Church but those tenements were as far as I know owned by Gilson and Woodfin at this time. Have to check on the 1869 Beer's Rutland County Atlas.

Fire and Storm, March 22, 1876

March 22, 1876.
Rutland Daily Globe.
Burned Out.
Sixteen Families and Ninety-one Persons Thrust into the Storm -
Not a Dollar Insured.

A tenement house generally known as “Long (?) Sault,” in West Rutland, occupied by sixteen families, several of whom kept boarders, was discovered to be on fire shortly after half past ten Monday night. The fiercest wind and snow storm of the whole winter was raging and no less than ninety-one were roused from their beds and forced out into the blinding gale. The following is a list of the homeless families and their losses:

John Quinn – seven persons – lost nothing.
Peter Baker – twelve persons – lost about $240.
John Penders – nine persons – loss is trifling.
James Brown – six persons – lost all he had.
Archie Mercier – four persons – lost all but a few tools.
Eugene Lamoureux – two persons – lost about $50.
Louis Forgette – three persons – loss is nothing.
Charles Quinlin – four persons – loss is nothing.
Felix Forgette – four persons – loss about $50.
John Hartney – six persons – loss is some $25.
William Main – eight persons – lost everything, and said to have had $400 burned up in a trunk.
Duff Gennette – ten persons – saved his things.
Patrick McLaughlin – four persons – saved most of his things.
Fred Gillipo – five persons – lost most of his things.
Thomas Lynch – five persons – no loss.
Mike Foley – two persons – lost about $100.

The fire originated in the apartments occupied by John Quinn. John is a hard working man, but he has domestic troubles. Mrs. Quinn drinks and while John was a bed and asleep, Mrs. Quinn was said to be in a condition next to delirium from the use of drink, and is supposed to have accidentally set fire to the house. The fire once started, there was no possibility of preventing the destruction of the building.

The tenement house was built some 25 years ago and was 25 feet wide by 125 feet long, two stories high on the east side and two stories with a basement on the west side. It contained twenty-four tenement suites, twenty of which were occupied. The building was owned by Sheldons & Slason, and cost about $3000. It has yielded an aggregate income since it was built of some $15,000 – the tenants paying each family from $2.08 to $2.50 per month. It was uninsured though an agent recently offered to place $4000 insurance on it. The firm will rebuild the building soon.

The scene at the time of the fire was one which no one could describe, nor even “our special artist on the spot” delineate. The different nationalities of the homeless multitude; the jargon of Canada-French patois and the rich Irish brogue, and the howling wind which, sometimes dying partly down, could again be heard roaring in the distance as the gale approached. The winds drove the flames directly on the Catholic Church which seemed doomed. It actually did take fire in one place and the flames got quite a start on a small spot, but the driving snow extinguished it again. Several men were in the belfry and kept that from igniting. After the fire burned down several families moved their effects in the unfinished rear part of the church.

Monday Night’s Storm.
The Heaviest Storm of the Winter-
Great Delay of Tralns-
Buildings Unroofed, etc.

"Euroclydon the storm wind" howled through western Vermont on Monday night, carrying devastation and blockade everywhere within its range. It began Monday evening and somewhat annoyed those people who were caught out of doors, turning and making sport of umbrellas and covering pedestrians with snow. The next morning what we were wont to call thoroughfares and sidewalks were drifts of moist snow waiting for a battle with snow shovels that had long lain idle. When the town awoke the battle was not nearly so general, nor so rigorous, as it should have been, many drifts yet lying where they were piled on the sidewalks undisturbed save by the feet of travelers brave enough
to force a path through them. We learn of but little damage being done in the village.

A small barn belonging to Mrs. McGuirek (McGuirk?) on Green street, was blown over: also a small barn belonging to Hiram Cheney, corner of Green and East streets, a window at the Bardwell hotel blew in about three o'clock, causing a limb of the law to arise at that unseasonable hour and prowl tremblingly around for a porter to repair the damages; A. C. Bates and Son's large new sign turned a somersault at the mandate of the storm, and a number of fences were blown down.

Several accidents are reported from around the village and neighboring towns. Oakley Gibson north of the village had the roof blown off from the L of his house; H. L. Gleason east of the village had a woodshed blown over and a chimney swept from his house; James Hayward, east of the village, had the roof lifted from a horse-barn; a horse-barn belonging to John McLaughlin, of Mendon, was blown over and two colts injured.
Big Fines for Liquor Men, 1901

August 6, 1901.
The Fort Wayne Evening Sentinel.
Big Fines for Liquor Men.
Rutland, Vt., Aug 6 – The heaviest sentences that have been imposed in Vermont for many years for violation of the prohibitory laws were given yesterday to the liquor dealers of Vermont by R. S. Taft, of Burlington, chancellor of the court of chancery. These men have heretofore escaped with small occasional fines and have grown rich at the business. John Barrett, proprietor of the Brunswick hotel, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment and to pay a fine of $100; Walter Jasmine, druggist, six months’ imprisonment and $500; Martin McMahon, druggist, six months’ imprisonment and $500; James Gilrain, owner of the Hotel Commercial, six months’ imprisonment and $200; William Dugan, druggist, $750; Stephen Cragin, druggist, $750; John Welch, druggist, $250. Two of Rutland’s four hotels, the Brunswick and Commercial, and West Rutland’s only hotel, the West Rutland house, against which a case is pending, are now closed, their owners declaring that they cannot be run at a profit without the bars.
This drowning of September 1856 seems to fit the scenario of the folk tale better than the September 1857 drowning mentioned in the posting.

Middlebury Register
September 24 1856
DROWNED. Four men in the employ of the West Castleton Slate Company attempted to cross Castleton Pond in a boat and when within a hundred yards of the shore they sought to reach, the boat capsized and two of the number, an Englishman and an Irishman were drowned.

All of the records that I have are listed. Check the list and see if any of the names are even close. I don't believe it's every record. Someone else was kind enough to send me the one I needed the most, which disappointingly was not in my collection and should have been. These were all from a microfilm. Give me the image number, volume number and name, and I'll send them along.

Simeon Warren used to own my house in Hubbardton. The 1797 deed executed by Simeon only mentions one other Warren, an Elisbeth, who I'm guessing may be the spouse. Not sure if this will help.
