Thank you so much to both for the prompt responses.
Its a bit hmmmmm, what do I do with this information?????
This is what I know about the Helen that I am looking for:
Her given names are Helen Georgina Eunice.
Her 1902 death cert in Melbourne, Australia states she was born in Brooklyn USA about 1850 and her father was Richard BARRATTI, no mother noted.
At the birth of her daughter (also Helen Georgina Eunice so the christian names have some significance) in Melbourne in 1875 she is noted as Helen Georgina Eunice BEATTIE formerly LOVE.
The same birth certificate notes that Helen married Richard Peter BEATTIE on 9 March 1869 at Kells Ireland. The Irish Office of Birth, Deaths and Marriages has formally advised that they have no civil record of this marriage, or any marriage of the couple from 1867 to 1871.
When daughter Helen married in Melbourne in 1896, Helen snr's maiden name was recorded as BARRICE.
So, she's hard to find as I could locate no record of the birth of a Helen Georgina Eunice BARRATTI/BARRICE/LOVE in New York in the period 1845-1855.
I suspect she may have been illegitimate, mother LOVE father BARRATTI or some such corruption such as BARRETT, which is why I zeroed in on this Helen BARRETT in Vermont. She's the right age and correct birth place.
Could I ask if any of these surnames appear amongst the paupers on the census sheet?
Any ideas on where or what to search in the US records? She is the only family ancestor from the USA so I have very little expertise in searching the US records.
I couldn't find a likely Richard BARRATTI etc or Helen BARRATT/LOVE etc in the 1850 US census but I think that all the New York data is not online for this census.
Thank you again
