My Friends,

I have indexed approximately 2100 naturalization records which were finalized in Rutland county, Vermont. If you have relatives who came from another country and lived in the Rutland county vicinity, including surrounding counties, even for a short time, I invite you to review the index located at this site:

http://www.angelfire.com/vt2/mumford/naturalizations.html

There is a note with explanations that should also prove helpful.

Cathy Habes was very generous to share her time, effort and web space to make this available to you and I thank her with all my heart. I hope and pray you will find one of your family members in here.

If you would like a copy of a record for your own review do not hesitate to drop me a note here and I will be happy to oblige at my earliest convenience. Before making your request, please read the section there on the site about making requests for copies.

Happy hunting!
Sara Noonan

Thank you so much for all your time and work indexing the "Naturalizations at Rutland County, Vermont (1836-1906)!!!

Please send me information you have found on:

Sara,

Thank you for all of your work on this.

When you have a chance, would you send me the following records?
dsc03453 John Merton of Pittsford
dsc03190 John Towers of Hydeville

My email address is vt251@hotmail.com. I have a high speed connection and a ~1,000 MB mailbox limit.

I suspect (hope, really) that John Merton is John Murthough/Murthur. John Murthough and sons lived in Pittsford and Hubbardton and family lore says the Murthoughs/Murthurs were originally from Mayo. Plus John Merton's birth year in your index is about what I had calculated for my John Murthough.

Thanks again!
LeRoy

Hi folks,

If you receive an image with a section 'blocked' out by a piece of paper, please send me a note about which image and name it was and I'll look for a second copy.

Some images had a typed piece of paper which was attached to the document stating their declaration intent. There were 2 images of those .... one had it flipped up to see if there was any writing under the paper and the others did not. If you get one with the paper flipped on it, let me know and I'll look for the other and send it to you.

Sorry about that.... there were several and I forgot all about those.

Without really knowing for sure I would suspect William and George Harrison are unrelated. The birthplace of William is Castlebar not Castletown. William's son who's name escapes me went to Castleton Medical College, married a niece of one of Lincoln's cabinet members and lived out his adult life in Pennsylvania. He had to brothers who lived around Mechanicville NY, and some unmarried sisters and the parents who stayed in Castleton. This info I remember from a turn of the century article in the FAIR HAVEN ERA.

Peter

Hi Flo,

Naturalization records are records for immigrants becoming American Citizens. I'm sorry, but only adult males over 21 years of age are listen in these. It is also not very likely that there was an obituary for a 2 year old. Not to say that it wouldn't happen - just unlikely.

Sorry I can't be of help in your request.

Hi Tootsie,

It was a good thing to request this copy - it has some really good extra information.

Yes, it was a lot of work, but I loved it and it made me feel great to be able to provide it. I finished it on the 4th of July!

I am very grateful to CatHabes for her generosity and post space. It would be best to give her thanks yourself. That will put a smile on her face because she did a LOT in making it pretty and so much more.

Best of luck... Sara

She sure did! I've emailed her... and she me. Thank you both, again.

I didn't see the "extra" information in the scan. There were two pages, but one was for someone else, also named Joseph, also a Frenchman. What I saw was basically the same information from the index.

Can't tell, at this point, if this Joseph Bushey is related to me. Did not include any additional family members, as I had hoped. I do know that my great-grandmother was naturalized, from a soundex record. No idea where, and she was underage at the time. Questionable about who her father was, but it doesn't seem to be Joseph as he was naturalized long before she was born.

Even so, appreciate your time and effort in making these available to researchers. I do a lot of look-ups for others, from resources [passed on to me by my late sister] at my fingertips, or locally. You've encouraged me to start getting more of this out there to the public. Think I need a committee!! haha There is enough to keep me busy for a LONG time.

Thanks again

Tootsie

Hi Tootsie,

It's unlikely your Gr-Grandmother was the one who went to court to be naturalized. It was either her father or her husband. When the head of the family was naturalized, it was automatic for the rest of the family in the household.

You have my email.... Send me what info you have on your Gr-Grandmother and I'll see what I can find when I get a chance. Please include every detail you have connected to her including siblings, children, all possible locations, rumors and so on. It all helps. I'll see what I can find. Please make sure you identify anything that considered family rumor or suspected information.

Best of luck,
Sara

My great-grandmother is Mary Harriet Bushey, shortened to Hattie Bush by the time she died. Her last name and mother's maiden names were varied on documents, and and many different spellings (Bushaw, Buskey, Busky, Bouskey, Bushy, Bushey). On her mother's death certificate it said the name was spelt Bouschier.

However, I forgot that her mother (Ellen/Eleanor Gervais/Jarvis) had married at least 3 times (as did Hattie), and that at the time she would have been naturalized, they were living with Ellen's 3rd husband, George (or John) Ricker... in Orange County, Vermont.

Have on idea where they would have gone to be naturalized.

1920 Census, Thetford, Orange Co, VT, Judd District. Soundex B400, Vol 7, E D 44, Sheet 8, Line 89.
Hattie Bailey, age 49, born Canada. Immigrated 1879, Nauralized 1884. Enumerated with son, Archie A Bailey.

1900 Census, Strafford Town, Orange Co, VT. Soundex B400, Vol 7, E D 149, Sheet 4, Line 11.
Joseph Baley, age 40, born Jan 1860, Canada French, Citizenship: Alien. Immigrated in 1875. Wife Hattie Baley, age 31, born March 1869, Canada French, Citizenship: Naturalized. Immigrated in 1882. Son Archable, age 9, born Feb 1891, Vermont. Son Earnest age 7, born Nov 1892, Vermont. Daughter Ellen M, age 4, born May 1896, Vermont. Daughter Julia E, age 1, born June 1898.

Not expecting you have this information (naturalization record) in Rutland County, but felt it worth a shot to inquire.

I am in Orange County, Vermont. Let me know if I can help you with anything from this area.

Thanks... Tootsie

Sara, I would greatly appreciate a look up of Thomas Purcell's naturalization record. Here is the image #dsc03758 2 406 Thomas Purcell Irishman Limerick. My email address is MAQUILL159@aol.com and I have a high speed connection. It is a cable modem although I am unsure of the file size. If it wouldn't be too much trouble I would also like the three Daniel Sullivan Naturalization files, Their image numbers and such are copied here:dsc04083 1 152 Daniel Sullivan Irishman Town of Castletown, Cork Ireland June 20, 1815

dsc04085 1 149 Daniel Sullivan Irishman Lisbornvill, Kerry Ireland 1810

dsc04155 1 18 Daniel Sullivan Irishman Limerick

Thank you for all of your help.

Dear Sara,
I'm in Australia and am part of the Leary/O'Leary Irish
family that at sometime sailed from their homeland in Cork,
Ireland for a better life.
My family in Australia begins with John Leary, son of Jeremiah Leary and Ellen McCarthy from Co.Cork arrived in Australia on the 21st. June 1864 - married on the 4th. July 1864 in Melbourne, Victoria to Mary Barrett from Co. Cork.
Her parents were John Barrett and Ellen Murray. I believe they had at least one daughter, Ellen.
After that I have little knowledge of his family until he re-married on the 5th March 1873 in Armidale, NSW as a widower.
My family are the descendants from the senond marriage, and all are named O'Leary.
As for his family in Ireland, well I do know of his parents and some of his siblings. But what happened to most of them I do not know. His youngest brother came out to Australia ? and married in 1877 in a place called Glen Innes, in northern NSW where John and his family were at the time.
I would be very interested to know if one of his other brothers went to the Amercia's, as I believe my gg/gf Jeremiah's brother Lewis emmigrated to the Boston area and all his descendants have stayed in and around that area ever since.
I would love to here more of your Irish Investigations.

Kind Regards,
Rita

You have mail!

You know I never knew what 'pay it forward' was until someone told me recently - and I then saw the movie..... Cool!

Someone helped me once - actually several times out of the blue, and it's so awesome. So, I do the same and hope that others do as well. We all know how hard it is to get some things at times.... and then one day - a lucky break by a kind offer to help.... Works for everyone!

Have a GREAT day! :)
Sara

Hi Sara,
Two names are relevant to my husband's history. One is Patrick Delhanty dsc03165 from 1860-09-12 and the other is Patrick Dulaihunty dsc 03472, which appears to have two dates: 1857-09-17 (initial application) and then 1860-09-02, where he can apply for citizenship, having lived in the US at least 5 years.
I have seen and studied images of these records on a website documenting the Delehanty's of Rutland County and would be interested in a legible copy of both of these documents. The images appear to be blurry, and are unprintable. Is there any way for me to acquire a physical copy?
