Merrits of Coventry/Stowe Vt

There were four young men enlisting from Stowe during the Civil War. I have three of them well documented, but am buffaloed on Joseph W ( or H) Merritt. The family was originally from Coventry but migrated to Stowe. Joseph seemed to have a bad time after his war service, becoming disabled &had trouble maintaining a typical existence. He is buried at the Newport Center Center, passing in 1907. Does anyone know more about his life--marriage, children, livihood etc.You can email me at dlfrench41@aol.com

I am trying to get an obituary for Clarence Martin Aither that d. Aug 1981. I believe he died in Exeter, NH. I have been in contact with a family member and they told me him and his wife are buried in Morrisville in Pleasant View Cemetery. If I could find a full date of death, possibly on a burial record it would be most helpful. Both the VT and NH state libraries are most helpful as long as you have
the full dates of death and place.

Thanking you in advance,

Susan Audy
White River Jct., Vt.

Samuel was born abt 1777 and the last trace I have of him is the 1860 Stowe census. Sarah was born abt 1780 and I have her through the 1850 census. Samuel was living with his son John George in 1860. I'm related through Samuel's son James.

If you know anything about this Harris family, please let me know.

thanks,
Shannon

Hello. The information you have on the Finnegan sisters in Beeville, Texas, is very interesting and helpful. Since you said you were going to start looking for Catherine Finnegan Stone, I thought I'd share some more information on Catherine and her daughter, Laura Stone Hamill, who was my great grandmother (I'm shortyesq's siser). I seem to have come to a dead end on Catherine with her last appearance in the 1910 census. She was then living in the Hotel Touraine, 256 Delaware Ave., Buffalo, NY, with her twin 4-year-old grandsons. Their legal names were Robert and Herbert Hamill, but the census gives their last name as Barrett. Their father, Bernard J Hamill, was an actor who used the name Neil Barrett on stage. Laura was also in the theater, acting and playing piano, but I think she used her real name. All of the documentation I have is posted to my family tree, EShortell family tree. Laura lived in Arizona and Los Angeles later in life, and had quite a long life. I remember her.

I have quite a bit of information on the following daughters of Patrick Finnegan who somehow ended up in San Antonia & Beeville, Texas. The daughters that I have information on is Theresa Finnegan Faber, Ellen Lucy Finnegan, Margaret Isabel Finnegan, and Susan Finnegan Thurston Saffold. The obituary for Susan is from the newspaper San Antonio Light and it reads:

SAFFOLD - Died Tuesday, April 6, 1948. Mrs. Susan Saffold, 75, residentce 1117 N St. Marys St., beloved aunt of Mrs. Laura Hamil and Miss Josephine Finnegan, Funneral services Thursday, 9 a.m., Angelus Chapel, Requiem mass 9:15 a.m. St. Marys Chruch, offered by Very Rev. John Quinlvan, O.M.I. Interment 3 p.m. St. Joseph's Cemetery, Beeville, Texas, Arrangements by the Agelus Funeral Home.

Theresa's obituary is also from the newspaper: San Antonio Light. It is as follows:

FABER - Died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1048. Mrs. Theresa Faber, age 89 years. Survivors are: Sister, Mrs. Saffold; niece, Mrs. Laura Hamil. Requiem mass at St. Mary's Church Friday, 9:15 a.m. Very Rev. John Quinlivan O.M.I. celebrant. Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Beeville, Texas. Arrangements by the Angelus Funeral Home.

Also the death certificate for Theresa has Laura Hamill of San Antonio, Texas being the informant for Theresa's family information.

Margaret Finnegan never married and she died on May 16, 1930 in San Antonio, Texas.

Ellen Lucy Finnegan moved from San Antonio to Los Angeles, California sometime in 1920's and seemed to go back and forth from California to Texas. I have not been able to find when or where Ellen died.

Ellen and Susan had guardianship of my grandfather, Leonard Boatman. I have requested a copy of the guardianship papers from Texas and am anxiously waiting to get them. My grandfather's mother is Mary Finnegan (another sister) and supposedly she died shortly after he was born in Ardmore, Oklahoma. I have nothing to support this except that Ellen Lucy Finnegan and Susan Finnegan did get guardianship of him when he was about 11 years old in San Antonio Texas. Before my Mom died she wrote a book for us kids with as much of our family history that she could recall and that is where I get the information about Mary Finnegan.

If you send me your email address I can send you scanned copies of this information. My personal email address is: abradell@yahoo.com. I have also been in contact with a Mark Kearney who is a descendent of Francis Finnegan who is one of Patrick's brothers. He lives about an hour from me... I live in Northern California in a small rural town outside of Sacramento called Elverta. He sent me the memoirs of Francis and I can send that to you as well.

It is so crazy how these Finnegan girls ended up in Texas. I have been able to find them in the San Antonio city directory from 1895 or 1896. It might be earlier. How and why did they end up in Texas? This weekend I will start researching about Catherine Finnegan Stone and see if I can locate any information on her being in Texas. I will post anything I find.

So it looks like we might be related thru our Finnegan blood! Hope to have more information for you soon. ~ Ann

I had discovered this story many years ago while researching, but only recently was able to confirm that Patrick Finnegan was my great-great-great-grandfather. I live in the Burlington, VT area (although originally from the Boston area), and would be very interested in whatever information either of you might have on the Finnegans. Patrick's daughter Catherine married a man from Eden named Stillman H. Stone, and they had 1 daughter, Laura May Stone, in 1877. They divorced in 1886. I find the Beeville, TX connection interesting, as I have records of one of my great-uncles (son of Laura May (Stone) Hamill) who was born in Beeville, TX in 1916. My guess is that Catherine had gone there with her sisters, and Laura may have lived there as well.

Thank you for the correction. I'd had her as Carrie E. until someone else said it was Caroline Elizabeth. Glad to have it straightened out.

Since most of the children were premature and stillborn, perhaps the hospital disposed of their bodies? I have not seen any graves for them either. Does your father know?

I know that Tyler Chase (1804-1880 Westford) was the son of Jonathan Chase & Mehitabel Jennison and husband of Sarah Hosford.

Wanda

Hi Wanda,
Thank you or your reply. According to my Father Carrie was not Caroline, but Carrie Eleanor Burns. On information I have found on the Chase family my Grandmother had a sister named Carrie and she was named after her and a sister Eleanor and that was her middle name.
I have seen her grave stone in the Cambridge cemetery with the name Carrie Burns Macomber. I never saw any names of just "Infant" on the grave stone and always wondered where the children were buried.
I am still looking at ancestors in the Chase family and if I ever see anything regarding Tyler Chase I will let you know.
Regards, Dottie

Hello Dorothy
Thank you for the information. Caroline Elizabeth Burns b. May 8, 1885 Westford d. June 2 1923 at Burlington, VT of peritonitis following a c-section. She married Jan 1 1907 to Tyler Chase Macomber. I learned that he was named for a farmer named Tyler Chase that his father had been a laborer for when Uncle Chase was born on Sept 20 1875.

I have found records for 4 children, the first 3 stillborn, male, May 30 1908, male Aug 23 1909, female Jan 8, 1911 and then Harold born May 26 and died May 1923. He had been born 8 weeks prematurely. I didn't know of one living to a year old.

In the 1925 Cambridge directory he is called T Chase Macomber while in 1930 his name is given in the census as Tyler. In the early 1930s Chase left Cambridge and settled in E. Fairfield where he remarried to my grandfather's younger sister Mary Margaret Corcoran on 15 Jun 1932.

He was at Pleasantview Cemetery in Cambridge with his first wife.

Uncle Chase died Dec. 30, 1958 and was buried with Carrie at Pleasant View Cemetery in Cambridge.

My mother told me that he had kept a chest that he told Mary never to open. After his death she opened it and found baby clothes made for the children he lost.

I know that your grandmother was Jennie Chase and wonder if he was related to the Tyler Chase that Uncle Chase was named for.

Thanks again for your response.

Wanda Alter
Thanks for the suggestion. Have been looking up info on James (very interesting!) and find he did have a son Thomas who left Londonderry for Cohos County after 1762 and died there in 1789. That would tie into the fact that the three "guys" enlisted and spent time during the war in Piermont,Haverhill and Newbury. Will keep searching.
Jo Kaiser

Found Eunice's marriage and death records (images) on Family Search.org. Isaac also had a daughter under 10 in the 1810 census and Thomas also had one about that age. Have never found Eunice's birth record or any of her children. George had a son Jacob who named his daughter Eunice.

Will be interested to hear what you find at town clerks office - think Linda has searched there in the past.
2nd reply: Found in my transcribed notes Eunice married in Sterling 1828, I think Sept. Will have to go to the town clerk's office to get an image copied. Hopefully it confirms that George is her father. His 1810 census info indicates he had several boys and only one girl (under 5) which would fit with her death info that she she was 80 in 1888.
Stay tuned, may not get to moville until next week.
I strongly suspect that these 3 guys (George, Isaac, and Thomas) are sons of Thomas Gregg. He, in turn, was a son of Captain James Gregg of Londonderry (now Derry), NH. Can anyone confirm or refute?

Did i somehow forget to do this after you were in Stowe? If so I am sorry. I don't remember which Gragg waa in Deanna French's line but when I find out perhaps you can share some of the info you have with her. She and I have kept the Sterling project alive. When I talked to Linda she said you and she had been in touch which is great.

Will say hi to Pat and will be back to you soon.
bb

Thanks Barbara - believe we have met in Stowe where we were looking up info on the Kaiser's. Now looking into Henry Kaiser's wife Eunice Gragg/Gregg. Have found a lot on the three brothers who were in the Revolutionary War in New Hampshire and settled in Sterling after the war (George, Isaac and Thomas)Will be interested to see what you can find on their children. Have info on some of the next generation but nothing on Eunice except her marriage to Henry in Sterling. Jo and Paul Kaiser next time you see Pat Haslam tell her hello from us!!

I will get look in my town record books for Sterling. Many births were recorded there. If I can't find it I will go to the town clerks office and review the records there.
The Gragg family is of interest to me as they and the Merrills are a gap in my records.

Barbara Baraw,
Pres Stowe Historical Soc.
genealogy researcher
