Vermont Gazette Date: Sep. 22, 1829 Vol XX Issue 41 pg 3, location: Bennington, Vermont - died, In Pownal on the 15th inst, Major Josiah Bates in the seventy fourth year of his age. Mr. Bates was among the earliest settlers of the vicinity. He was an industrious and worthy citizen, and one who exhibited the plain manners and habits of the illustrious generation generation to which the present are so greatly indebted for the comforts and abundance of the good things of this life, and the special blessings of civil liberty and religious freedom. He was a member of the Baptist Church in regular and exemplary standing for near 40 years of his life.
