I have some pictures of Ogden Fire Department and would love to know who served there. There are still horses pulling the wagons, so I am thinking early 1900's.

Thinking is might be Charles Smith's family or Wood's as I have both in my family history.

But sure where to look..

Squire Vivian Pickett is my great grandfather. he had 2 daughters with his 1st marriage to Alice Bernice Watson and my grandmother was their 1st daughter. I know A LOT about him from photos and stories that I am happy to share! We just moved not too long ago so I am in the process of locating "that BOX". Please email me and I can send you some great things that I have!
Thanks--Fawn Benson (Eagle Mountain, UT)

Squire vivian Pickett is my grandfather. My father Charles william was his only son from marriage to Grandma June. I have all kinds of family history from them we have just found. I am shaking as im writing this as us 3 grandchildren never got to meet him & have wondered for years of our family history on that side as dad never talked much about that side of our family. We would love to get in contact with anyone from the Pickett side.

My daughter bought this picture at an antique store in Ogden and I want to keep the frame but I think the unidentified gentleman needs to find his family. If anyone can help identify him, please let me know. He is on canvas and it looks aged. The picture is free to his family. Thanks for any help.

Re: Need help finding possible biological father

First, information concerning Adoption is confidential under Utah State Laws. The birth parents, or the State might take legal action for releasing this information. You also may harm the reputation of ANY person having this name and having been in the USAF during that time period. Thus you may open yourself up to libel issues, privacy issues. I would recommend you use the delete button on this posting and repost indicating searching for birth father of a male born 11/21/1982 in Ogden, UT. The father may have been from Buffalo, New York and was in the Air Force. Do NOT identify the names. I would also suggest you copy my posting quickly as the Rootsweb monitor may delete your message.

This birth mother may or may not have been providing the truth for one reason or another.

The birth father might not be interested in a reconnection. He might not know about the child. He might not want his current family to know. As a retired law enforcement officer, I must give a warning. In reconnections, neither party knows what the other party is like. Birth parents might find their child with severe medical problems, alcohol or drug addition, mental instability. The adoptee might find that true of the birth family. The adoptee might learn things about their family they really can't handle. The child was given up for many reasons, mother's age, financial reasons, health reasons, etc.

You need to use an intermediary.
This site indicates Utah will provide access to identifying information if BOTH the adult person and birth parents have requested.
http://www.gsadoptionregistry.com/utah/utahadoptionlaws.html
Here is a registration form, HOWEVER, contact the agency prior to sending in the event the form or procedure has changed:
http://health.utah.gov/vitalrecords/pictures/forms/adopt.pdf

If your husband is still in the Ogden area, I'd suggest contact with a legal representative, attorney, etc.
Re: 11/06/1964 Ogden UT -Female Adoption

I'm sure the other link posted provides any information, other than go to court...

Her first task would be to fully discuss her situation with her adopted parents, if they are willing to discuss it. Sometimes children are adopted of other family members. If the Children's Aid Society handled the situation, that is probably not true. Her adopted parents might not have ANY information concerning the mother, or the mother's situation.

The birth parent(s), may or may not be interested in any contact by your friend. In most cases, the womans current family may not have any knowledge about a previous child. The woman may not have told her current husband, so contact might have a deep inpact on the woman and her current situation. The father may not have known, his birth family or current family might not know.

The birth mother or father "might" be interested in a reconnection. BUT, as a retired law enforcement officer, I must give a warning.

So, if she is still interested, she needs to use an intermediary. In some States, they are licensed, can access the original birth records and do the contacts. I don't see this function in Utah. However, there are National organizations (Mutual Concent) where both parties can register to find each other. "IF" the birth mother has registered and the child registers, the organization can do the research.

Her next contact would be to contact The Children's Aid Society and ask if they have a reconnection program. If the birth parents knew this agency was handling the adoption, they might also have contacted.
--This doesn't sound good...:
http://www.standard.net/topics/charity/2010/04/08/ogden-chil...

This site indicates Utah will provide access to identifying information if BOTH the adult person and birth parents have requested.
http://www.gsadoptionregistry.com/utah/utahadoptionlaws.html
Here is a registration form, HOWEVER, contact the agency prior to sending in the event the form or procedure has changed:
http://health.utah.gov/vitalrecords/pictures/forms/adopt.pdf

IF your friend resides in Utah, have her contact some of the local agencies that might be able to help. Also contact the local court/legal organizations. An attorney might have knowledge of the easy steps.

There are a number of such "organizations" that can be found on the Internet. BUT, these usually charge a fee to be placed on their Registry, and if that organization is not well known/well used, the birth parents might never register with it. Before registering, check them out well for service, cost, protection, etc.

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

Hi,

Genealogists look for dead relatives. Actually you shouldn't put live person's names on a public web site because of privacy issues. Here's the web site for Utah Adoption Records and information about searches, www.archives.state.ut.us/research/guides/adoptions.htm.
I'm new to ancestry.com but thought it was worth a shot trying. My husband is adopted. We recently found his birth mother and got a little info on a possible bio dad. She's not being very forth coming on information but I was just wondering if someone could help us out.

My husband was adopted November 21, 1982 out of Ogden Utah. She told us that the possible bio dad is a man by the name of David Gardner. He was from Buffalo New York and was in the Air Force and that's all we know. Her name is Nancy Willis. If anyone has some tips on how to go abut trying to find him that would be very much appreciated.

Thank you
Thanks, I was doing a project at the time for my undergrad class. My friend continued the work and her report is accessible at Weber State Library I think under Utah Wholesale grocery company. Out of curiosity though, when was you grandfather born? It seems to have gone kinda far. It turned into a very large company with connections going from Chicago through Utah to San Francisco.

Elizabeth Ellis was born in Nottinghamshire in about 1819. She was the sister of my 3 great grandmother, Jane Ellis Hind. She married William Smith Parker and they emigrated to the USA, she died in Ogden Utah in 1896. She and her husband were listed as witnesses on my 3 great grandparents marriage entry from Boughton, Notts December 8, 1840. I am interested in learning more about that branch of the family.

Garry, I have the following on ancestors of Ambrose Greenwell Sr. His father was John Greenwell, b 1761 Dunton Bassett, Leicestershire, England. He died 29 Dec 1835 at Dunton Bassett, Leicestershire, England. John's wife was Ann Foard (there are various spellings for Foard). She was born 5 Jan 1767 and died 3 Jan 1861. at Dunton Bassett, Leicestershire, England. They were married 26 Nov 1786. Source for this info. is from research that my mother did many years ago and it was all done by hand. I will need to look into where she got the information so you can verify what I have told you. I will get back to you on this,

There is a book titled Dunton Bassett A Village History. I am not sure if it is still avalable. It was devised and published by the Dunton Bassett Historical Group. My contact with them is via Wendy Warren who was chairman of the Dunton Basett Local History Group in 2006. They may have a copy available. It is and excellent book with many references to the Greenwell family. E-mail is wendy.warren5@tiscali.co.uk

This year is the 150th anniversary of LDS Pioneer Elizabeth Russell Archibald's immigration to Utah.

Many people in Utah and Idaho are descended from Thomas and Elizabeth (Russell) Archibald. Thomas Archibald died in Scotland but Elizabeth Russell Archibald came to Wellsville with several of her children. Some went to Idaho and some went to Canada.

A family reunion for all descendants of Elizabeth Russell Archibald is being planned for Saturday, Sept 8, 2012 at the Wellsville, Utah bowery by cousin Brandon Sundeen. He is planning games for the younger children, sharing of family history info for the adults, followed by a memorial service at the Wellsville Cemetery. Food is POT LUCK. Bring your own lunch and all will share what they bring.

If you have any family heirlooms, photos, letters, etc.. pertaining to Elizabeth Russell Archibald or her immediate family, please bring them for viewing.

For more details contact Brandon Sundeen. Phone: 503-396-2178 OR email: brandonsundeen@gmail.com

Please help us get the word out.
my pleasure!
i also read, though now i stupidly did not bookmark the link, that his name was marion monroe martin, that he left home to join the war(?), & took the name marcellus monroe to avoid his parents finding him & bringing him home. he was known as major monroe for a time. later he went back to his real name.
this does make sense, though i have no proof yet.
my problem right now is that he is listed (on his son's death certificate) as james m. monroe. where the james comes from is a mystery.

i am trying to confirm the line of rosalie h monroe, who married thomas nicholls johnson (went by 'nick').
i know that she was raised by arvie & jean(johnson)marshall, but not why.
from the info i have found, i know that her mother (edna irene hadley monroe) died when rosalie was very young. i assume she was given to the marshalls because of that. on the 1930 census she is listed as their adopted daughter.
her marriage info lists her adoptive parents, her obituary lists edna hadley & william henry monroe.

all information would be appreciated. thanks.
ps - was jean johnson marshall related to rosalie's husband?

I didn't find the date of 1875, but did find this.

Groom Last Name:

RUSSELL

Groom First Name:

William H.

Bride Last Name:

ROMNEY

Bride First Name:

Norah Mignon

Place:

Salt Lake City

Date:

21 Jan 1909

County of Record:

Salt Lake

State:

Utah

Do you think Nora was married before? To get a copy you will need to contact Salt Lake County. See if you can get a copy of the application not just the marriage record. There will be a lot more information.

Good Luck to you.

Re: Obit Look-up Galloway/Fiet

Don,
I see you've only posted 5 messages on the Rootsweb system. A lot of obit requests go unanswered, especially when you post such limited information on several persons. A lot of research can be accomplished by yourself using a lot of online sites, Ancestry.com, Heritage Quest (for Census), many other genealogical sites have their own census documents. The Social Security Death Index is found on several sites. Family trees posted on Ancestry help find people having information, but a lot of trees have a lot of errors, the more source documentation, the better the tree. You can access family trees if you have an ancestry membership, or you can access the library version using your library card at your library, on their computers. Etc.

Richard and Jacoba's gravestone:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=ga...;

The Social Security Death Index:
Richard Galloway, born 10 Mar 1882, died Aug 1967, "last residence:" Ogden, Weber County, UT.
The "last residence" on the SSDI is NOT necessarily where a person actually lived or died. The Social Security Administration calls it simply the "home of record," and possibly the address where correspondence by the SSA was sent to the person, family member, etc. It is not necessarily where any benefit was paid to the person, survivor, or the lumpsum death benefit (in years past, it was paid to anyone paying burial expenses, family member, funeral home, city/county, attorney; today, a living spouse). It is sometimes the location where the notification of death was sent to the SSA, sometimes where the lump sum death benefit was sent.
--His SSN was issued in Utah before 1951, so even that could be the basis of knowledge where he had lived.

I find 11 posted family trees on this person, with varied information on place of birth (England) and date of death (8 August or 15 August 1967 in Ogden). One has many sources for information; but, you can't identify where someone was born (city, area) from a US Census.

The 1910 US Census of Leigh, Fremont County, Idaho
Richard Galaway(as written/as transcribed), age 28, born in England, immigrated in 1900/"Pa" (Pa was the indication that he had filled his "paper," the Declaration of Intent to become a citizen. This was part of the enumerator instructions, "Na" Naturalized, "Al" Alien. One idiot genealogist says "Pa" stands for papers pending...NOTHING was pending. This was a enumerator instruction regarding status, not a connection to any naturalization process). Farmer/General Farm. Owned his property. Married 5 years
Jacoba, 23, born in Holland, immigrated 1893/NA (however, US law at that time identfied the wife had the same citizenship as her husband. Even US born females became aliens, if they married an alien. This was changed in 1922 with a law identifying a female has her own citizenship status).
Rosella M, 4, born in Utah
Olga, 2, Utah
Richard E, 4/12, born in Idaho (This census page is identified as having been enumerated on 16 & 18 April, 1910. So Richard was born about Dec 1905/Jan 1906. Although this system is "usually" correct, there are SOOO many errors in the census. Enumerators were wrong, copied the wrong information onto the final pages, the person providing the information was wrong (especially when there were lots of children), the person did not know the correct information, etc).

The 1920 Census of Grange, Malheur County, Oregon
Richard G(as transcribed, supposedly it is a "D"), born in Yorkshire, England, immigrated in 1900/Na/1905 (If he had been naturalized in 1905, the "Pa" in the 1910 was wrong, or this was in error). Farmer/Home farm
Jacoba, age 32, born in Antwerp, Netherlands (However, Antwerp is in Belgium, but was in the United Netherlands until 1835, so a mystery of an error?). Immigrated 1900/Na/1905 (Here again, the status of the wife was that of the husband, it appears her immigration and status was just copied from Richards).
Rosella, 13, UT
Vera O, 11, UT
Earnest R, 10, ID
Ruth J, 8, ID
Leah M, 6, ID
James W, 3, ID
Thora A, 1 5/12ths (the census was enumerated on 21 January, so born about July/August 1918).

The 1930 Census of Grange, Malheur Co, OR
Richard Galloway, 48, born in England, immigrated 1900/NA
Jakoba, 42, born in Holland, imm 1894
Ernest R, 19
Ruth J, 17
Mary L, 15
James W, 12
Thora A, 10
Irene G, 8, Oregon
Ellen A, 6, Oregon

The World War II Draft Registration (The Old Man's Draft).
Richard (NMN) Galloway, born 10 March 1882 in Hull, Yorkshire County, England, living in Vale, Malheur County, Oregon. The Name and Address of Person Who Will Always Know Your Address: Ellen Howe, Vale, Oregon (The fact the person identified is not his wife (or on anyone's WWII Draft card) does not mean a divorce, the wife had died, etc. MANY use family members, neighbors, employers, friends, rather than the spouse).

His marriage to Jacoba Fiet was identified as being on 19 April 1905 in Salt Lake City...but no source material identified.

As far as his and Jacoba's obit, they had many children and died when full obits were pretty popular. But, the publishing isn't always done. It depends on how long they lived in an area, their health for several years, connection to the community, family and friends in the community, their own wishes and those wishes of the children (financial and otherwise). I expect there is one in these cases.
--I sent a request to the owner of the family tree having the most information and detail a link to this thread, with a request to contact you with information, and if they have the obits.

As far as obits for the Fiet family:
Here is Aaltje's cemetery info:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=fi...;
--page is sponsored by a "Jfiet" possibly related also.

There are more Fiet's listed for Utah.

Findagrave.com is a great source of information also.

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA
