I just sent you an email, but I am the genealogical historician for San Bernardino Historic and Pioneer society. Phineas was in San Bernardino as a millwright per our records in June 1867. In Jan 1840 in Dupage Illinois he married Alta Rolf/Ralph/Ralf. Her brother went to Utah about the same time Phineas and his second wife, Mary, did. Peter Lougy fathered 6 children with Mary and he died in 1837 in Canada. Hope this helps.

This year is the 150th anniversary of LDS Pioneer Elizabeth Russell Archibald's immigration to Utah.

Many people in Utah and Idaho are descended from Thomas and Elizabeth (Russell) Archibald. Thomas Archibald died in Scotland but Elizabeth Russell Archibald came to Wellsville with several of her children. Some went to Idaho and some went to Canada.

A family reunion for all descendants of Elizabeth Russell Archibald is being planned for Saturday, Sept 8, 2012 at the Wellsville, Utah bowery by cousin Brandon Sundeen. He is planning games for the younger children, sharing of family history info for the adults, followed by a memorial service at the Wellsville Cemetery. Food is POT LUCK. Bring your own lunch and all will share what they bring.

If you have any family heirlooms, photos, letters, etc.. pertaining to Elizabeth Russell Archibald or her immediate family, please bring them for viewing.

For more details contact Brandon Sundeen. Phone: 503-396-2178 OR email: brandonsundeen@gmail.com

Please help us get the word out. Pass this information on to all of your extended family so that they may attend if they are interested.

Hi, everyone.

I am looking for a Leonard I. Smith who served an LDS mission in South Africa in the 1800's. He was from Utah. I know that's not much to go on, but that's all I've got.

This Leonard I. Smith converted my GGGGrandfather, Henry Talbot, to Mormonism. Henry and his family moved to America and crossed the plains to Utah with the Saints. Generations later, my Talbot ancestors married into a Utah Smith family and I'm trying to see if there is a family connection from my Smith family to this Leonard I. Smith. How ironic would that be?!

Loni Smith Schneider

Hi Susan,
You are very lucky that your family didn't move around too much so they were fairly easy to find in Census records and someone had posted their family tree.

William White b. 9 Oct 1808, Bristol, Bucks, Pennsylvania. Source: Anderson Family Tree, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/12688431/person/998475432.

William married Mary Mccabe on Oct. 25, 1844 in Warren, Ohio.
Source: same as above.

Mary Mccabe was born 7 Jan 1819, Franklin, Warren, Ohio. Source: Anderson Family Tree.

You should have original sources for all facts. I lot of mistakes are made by copying other's work. Utah didn't require death certificates until 1904. You can search for William's death cert (if there was one) at www.archives.utah.gov/research/indexes/20842.htm .

In 1870 Mary, Pheabe and Joseph were living in Moroni, Sanpete, Utah Territory.
Mary White, b. You should look for her death certificate in the Utah Archives.

Now info on the children:
Sarah Ann White b. 1 March 1851 in Orange, Cuyhoga, Ohio.
Hi again Brenda,

Here is information about the sailing ship HUDSON which I have quoted from the book "Ships, Saints, and Mariners - A Maritime Encyclopedia of Mormon Migration, 1830-1890" by Conway B. Sonne, published in 1987.

"Ship: 1618 tons: 208' x 41' x 29'
Built: 1863 by J. S. and D. D. Westervelt at New York City, New York

Captain Isiah Pratt, a mariner who had as early as 1852 skippered the ship MARGARET EVANS in the Black X Line, was in command of the large packet ship HUDSON on both of her voyages with Mormon emigrants. On 3 June 1864 the first passage began at London with 863 Saints from the British Isles, Switzerland, Germany, and Holland. Elder John M. Kay presided over the emigrant company. His counselors were George Halliday, John L. Smith, and Matthew McCune. Other returning missionaries were Elders Louis A. Bertrand, Samuel Neslen, and Thomas O. King. The crossing was unusually slow - forty-six days, but the "kindness of Capt. Pratt did much to alleviate the fatigue of the journey." Measles broke out among the children, and nine died and were buried at sea. Soon after landing, another child died at Castle Garden. One woman from Switzerland also died. There were three births. The vessel arrived at New York on 19 July. Three years later - 1 June 1867 - the HUDSON sailed from London with twenty Saints aboard, arriving on 19 July after a forty-eight-day passage.
This full-rigged packet had three decks, a round stern and tuck, and a billethead. Captain Pratt was listed as owner in 1868. Her registration was surrendered 30 September 1878 because the vessel had been sunk sometime earlier."

Again, I hope this is of interest to you.

Regards,

Jerry Carbiener
Hello Brenda,

This is from "History of Tooele County" by the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and published in 1961. In this book, various people (usually descendents) submitted brief biographies of many of the early pioneers to the area. This was submitted by "Adolphine S. Willis."

"John Willis was born at Stebbing, Essex, England January 22, 1828, the son of John Willis and Bridget Ann Chittock. He was baptized into the Church in England and immigrated to America in 1864 on the sailing vessel "The Hudson." He arrived in the Salt Lake Valley November 2, 1864 and later settled in Grantsville. He was a truck gardener, planted the first cherry trees and experimented with new plants. He was a candymaker by trade. Mary Ann Bloomfield, first wife of John Willis, was born August 14, 1814 at West Walton, England. Died May 18, 1894 at Grantsville. She had two sons, George and Joseph.
Anna Lena Jacobson, second wife of John, was born December 14, 1842 in Oster Plana, Sweden. She was a hard worker, both at home and in Church. She came to Utah in 1872, leaving a family of five children, bringing a five-month-old baby. She worked hard and sent for her children, by weaving carpets to get the money. Gave 25 yards of home-made carpet to the Salt Lake Temple. Died December 17, 1919 at Grantsville. She had one child, a son, Harry Gordon Willis. John Willis died March 6, 1915 at age 87 and was buried in Grantsville."

Hope that is of some interest to you.

Regards,

Jerry Carbiener
Minden, Nevada

Hi Sue,

Nice to learn of a new "cousin"! I suppose we ought to put this in to the Stewart subject as I don't think our line had any relationship to poor Mr. Leonard I Smith.

However, to answer you. I first learned of the cause of Benjamin's death from the "History of Tooele County", by the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, published in 1961 by the Transcript Bulletin Publishing Co., Tooele, UT.

It has brief biographies of many of the early pioneers to Tooele County and Benjamin's is included. In it, is stated: Benjamin Thomson Stewart was born September 26, 1826 or 1827 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland, the son of James Stewart and Margaret Cassels. On January 12, 1850, he married Agnes Gillespie. They were parents of eleven children. Within a year after their marriage they started the long trip to Zion. They crossed the plains in 1853 with Capt. Moses Clawson's Company. They settled at Tooele where they lived the remainder of their lives and reared their family. He had a little farm west of Tooele where he made a meager living, but after Johnston's Army came to Utah in 1857 he turned his farm into a truck garden and supplied the Camp with produce. After the army moved, he sold his vegetables and fruits to the miners at Stockton for many years. When he failed to return from a trip on August 10, 1877, Agnes became worried and sent friends to look for him. He was found dead under his wagon in the bottom of the gully at Soldier's Bridge. It was assumed that his horses had become frightened and run away, overturning the wagon.
- Dora Stewart Allen as told her by James Lawrence Stewart."

I have some other info on Benjamin and will be happy to share. I am descended from their daughter Martha, born in Tooele in 1855, how about you?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

Jerry

It is very likely that these graves may not be found. In the early 1900's several of the grave markers were moved or destroyed when a road constructed through the area. This I know from my own research. Next time I am in that area, I will stop by and get some photos if these graves can be found. Hopefully the information below will give you what you need, usualy the headstones are in poor condition and you can't make out the information.

Here is some burial information from sexton records found on Ancestry.com"

Name: ORR, ROBERT
ID: 2512.00
BLOCK: BLK I
Section: SEC 4
LOT: L- 5
GRAVE: W2
Father: ORR, JAMES
Mother: HOUSTAN, ANN
Birth Date: 8-02-1803
Birth Place: KILBURNIE, AYRSHIRE, SCOTLAND
Death Date: 11-07-1887
Spouse: MC QUEEN ELIZABETH
HS_Name: Same
HS_Birth Date: Same
HS_Death Date: Same

Name: ORR, ELIZABETH
ID: 2511.00
BLOCK: BLK I
Section: SEC 4
LOT: L- 5
GRAVE: W1
Father: MC QUEEN, OSBORNE
Mother: COPELAND, ELIZABETH
Birth Date: 6-15-1806
Birth Place: KELLEYLAY, DOWN, IRELAND
Death Date: 7-27-1880
Spouse: ORR, ROBERT
HS_Name: Same
HS_Birth Date: Same
HS_Death Date: Same

Also, I just checked the index of biographies at the Daughters of Utah Pioneers web site and both Robert and Elizabeth have histories on file. If you follow I-80 west from Salt Lake about 30 miles west is the City of Tooele (pronounced like two-willah). From Tooele contiune south on state road 36 about 20 miles to find St. John. The communities of St. John and Clover make up what is known as the Town of Rush Valley. Not 100% positive but I believe incorporation took place around 1984.

Ila Dean Caldwell

Died March 5, 2005

Ila Dean Johnson Caldwell passed away suddenly, but peacefully, on March 5, 2005. She was born in Downey, Idaho, on Oct. 18, 1931, a daughter of Arnold LeRoy and Ila Packer Johnson. She grew up in Logan and attended the AC. She married John B. Caldwell on April 24, 1953, in the Logan LDS Temple.

She was a devoted wife and mother. Her life centered on her family and a wide circle of friends. She was a busy woman and had a wide variety of interests.

She was a dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When called, she served diligently in any position. In the Primary, she served as "Guide Patrol" leader and president. She provided service and assistance to the ward members through the Relief Society organization. She served as president, organized ward dinners, did visiting teaching, participated in ward bazaars & making pillow cases, hot pads, quilts, and crafts of all kinds & which proceeds were used to support the relief efforts of the ward. Her participation in the Young Women's Program was a highlight. She has always been a "Young Woman" at heart. She served as YW president in the ward and secretary, counselor, and president in the Stake. At the time of her passing, she served as a Visiting Teacher, Funeral Coordinator and Red Cross drive Chair.

Dean has always had a love for reading. She could always be found with a book. She was a member of the "Friends of the Library" & a fundraising group who purchases books and media for the library. She loved to travel and was able to enjoy many worldwide trips with her husband and family.

Dean was an avid photographer. No family event or social gathering was complete without a roll or two of film. Children made a special point of going to Dean's house on Halloween. They knew they would have their picture taken and would get one of Dean's special homemade suckers. She was a wonderful cook. She used her talents to bless the lives of those she came in contact with.

If there was a craft, she learned it, taught it, and shared it with others. She enjoyed doing handwork, tatting, knitting, netting, hardanger, and crafts. She made beautiful ceramics, taught with the Community School for adults for 20 years, made favors for parties, mugs for graduates, pen holders for those getting married, and bookmarks of all kinds for her friends.

Tatting was her passion. She learned to tat from her mother at an early age. She was a charter member of the "Wasatch Tatters Guild," attended classes, demonstrated at fairs and events, and exchanged tatting with others worldwide.

She enjoyed watching the Utah Jazz and attending Sons of the Utah Pioneers with her husband. She was a member of the Tooele Country draft board for twenty years, and a voter registration agent, and a voting judge at elections.

Survived by her husband, John Brant Caldwell; four sons, Jan (Kaylene), John, Jr. (Bonnie), Jerry (Susan) and Jeffrey (Cheri); and a sister, Clarice (Bevan) Higbee. Mom's grandchildren were the highlight of her life. In her history, she wrote "we have ll darling grandchildren, Cassi, Marissa, Andrew, Brant, Hilary, Christopher, Mallory, Jackson, Tiffany, Colton, and Bailey and one beautiful great grand daughter
There is a new book Rush Valley. It was compiled for the 150 year celebration. Lacey Russell was the one who compiled the book and I believe that it is available at the Transcript Bulletin office in Tooele.
