I was able to make a copy of your grandfather's death certificate. Go into the link for the state archives on one of other the replies. Go to the part the says you can look at the 1961 certificates. Put in 1961 and Salt Lake County. Go to Box 120 Folder 16. On the right side there are a lot of numbers. Click on the one that ends in 594. That is the death certificate. It looks like he died in Salt Lake County and was buried in Provo.

The wife (or partner)that I'm searching for is Geneva, who mothered his son, Robert Stewart Grow, in January 1921 in Salt Lake City. Robert comittted suicide in San Francisco in 1976.

I found two clippings on Ancestry.com but under the wrong name. Try Eva Martha Holmes. The first was "Woman Slain As She Prowls In S.L. Store". The second was "Grocer Freed In Death Case", which was in the Ogden Standard Examiner on Jan.31, 1935. In that article she is referred to as Eva Margaret Holmes.
Thank you for sharing your interesting story. I'm actually trying to chase down an offspring of that bootlegger, Bob Grow, the individual being born in 1921 so it doesn't seem likely that Eva was the mother.

On his 1917 WWI draft registration card, it says he had "Common Law Wife and three children".

This could not have been Eva(even though she was living with him at the time of her death). She was born 23 May 1905, and would have been 12 years old in 1917(date of the WWI Draft Reg). She was married in 1923 to Bert Rigney, and only had one son b 1924. I have full documentation on her.

Her son says "She was living with this 'bootlegger' Bob GROW. Bob and Eva had an argument one night, and Eva packed a suitcase with all her things in it and headed for the streetcar, probably heading to Provo Utah and her family. She walked to the corner and there was grocery store on the corner, it was late at night. She sat her suitcase down and then just walked through the plate glass of the door to the grocery store (she didn't even try to open the door). She was not a thief and was not stealing anything - she walked right past the cash register and didn't take anything. She walked down the aisles. The grocery store owner came out of the back room with his shot gun after hearing the glass crashing. He yelled several times for her to stop, but she just kept walking. The store owner shot her right between the eyes. She died instantly. It has never been determined why she did this or acted this way. (possibly drugs - or just a state of shock). The grocery store owner was put in an insane asylum a year after the shooting, because he couldn't live with what he had done."

Apparently there was a soap factory at 562 S. Denver Street (450 East). It was called "Deseret Soap." Does anyone have photos of the building or of people working inside the building when it was operating? I need a couple for a display in our ward. Thanks. (BTW, don't suggest I go to the Church History Library; they don't have anything. Nor does the digital photo collection at the Utah State Archives) But I haven't checked the newspaper index yet.

Thanks to Judie and "diskoverit" for checking for obituaries for Daniel Charles Christen. I wonder how far each of you checked. Lannie Hartman found Daniel's death certificate on Ancestry.com, the death index for Americans dying abroad (dated 18 Jan. 1826). It shows his final moments as dying of "apoplexy" while hunting. He was working for "Cananea Cons Copper Co." His wife Pearl was notified of his death via telegraph on the following day (13 Dec. 1825)-- strangely, addressed to "c/o Holy Cross Hospital, Salt Lake, Utah". His name is given as "Charles Christen".
Anyway, as I asked, I wonder how much later after Dec. 12 the newspapers were checked-- while Pearl was notified the 13th, the report to the government did not go in until January 18th, 1926. Thanks in advance for any further checking.
Ken Neumann

I wasn't able to find an obituary for Daniel Christen. Do you know his cause of death?

Looking at the 1920 U.S. Federal census, Daniel, Pearl and Pearl's three children are living in Bingham, Salt Lake, Utah. Daniels' occupation is "Miner".

Maybe Daniel was an employee of the "Calumet and Arizona copper Mining Co." in Bisbee, Arizona and worked the company mines in Cananea, Sonora Mexico. The company also mined silver.

All of the articles in various newspapers regarding the Calumet mining co. show it was a prosperous and safe mine, the last accident was 4 years prior to 1925.
I did not find anything for other mining companies in Arizona that related to accidents.

Hello, I was wondering if anyone could help me try to find an obituary for Daniel Charles Christen, b 1875, died 12 Dec 1925 in Cananea, Sonora, Mexico, and buried in Bisbee, Cochise, Arizona. Notice of his death was sent to his widow Pearl Christen, and I'm hoping there was some kind of death notice or obituary for Daniel in a Salt Lake City newspaper (Pearl resided in the area). I suppose there could have been a delay in getting any news about his passing since it was so far away.
Thanks for any help or suggestions.
Ken Neumann

Hello

I just wrote to Harmony and i believe (hope) we are talking about the same Frederick Heywood b. 1880 at Swinton, Gtr Manchester, UK. he was a coal miner lauder (1901 census) & lived at 219 Swinton Hall Road, Swinton. he was the oldest child of Moses Heywood (b.1852) & Frances Jackson (b. 1852). His Grandparents were Thomas Heywood & Hannah Proctor. I believe they hailed from Wolverhampton, West Midlands.

Frederick's brother John William Heywood (1890-1955) was my Great Grandfather. The Heywood's in the 1800s were all coal miners. please visit my website as all my info is on there www.angelfire.com/realm/ggperry

I would absolutely love some info on Fred Heywood and his/your side of the family. I've been trying to find Fred for years. I knew he was a Mormon, but I still couldn't trace him. Was he buried in Utah? I look forward to speaking to you some more.

Regards
Glenn Perry

He was born in 1920. I know he was raised as a mormon in Utah. Maybe we are related. If you think so, please contact me. Could I receive a copy of the photos of her. Why would she be standing on top of the hotel? If you are willing, I would like a copy of a photo (to add to the history) of her around the time she was working at the Belvedere. lj.jazzartsy@gmail.com

The Social Security Administration calls it simply the "home of record." It is not necessarily where any benefit was paid to the person,
survivor, or the lumpsum death benefit (in 1972 was paid to anyone paying burial expenses, family member, funeral home, city/county, attorney). It is sometimes the location where the notification of death was sent to the SSA, sometimes where the lump sum death benefit was sent.

The "last residence" on the SSDI is NOT necessarily where a person actually
lived or died.
Yes, I saw that also in the Eagle which is the first time I've seen it. SSDI has her name only as Cleoris K. Word. I only find Cleo or Cleoris used in the census records prior to 1940 when she was still single. Looks like a flip of a coin to decide if it was a nickname to perhaps honor her mother Minnie Rogers or a real name.
