I am looking for any info regarding Abraham Luoma (Iso-Luoma) and his wife Kate. Specifically the time after the Scofield mine disaster in Scofield UT where they lost almost all of their family in an explosion. They then went back to Finland and I would like to know when and where they died and are buried. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I think they might have had one son in Finland also so any info on him would be great!

Descendants of Elizabeth (Russell) Archibald - Reunion Sept 8, 2012

This year is the 150th anniversary of LDS Pionner Elizabeth Russell Archibald's immigration to Utah.

Many people in Utah and Idaho are descended from Thomas and Elizabeth (Russell) Archibald. Thomas Archibald died in Scotland but Elizabeth Russell Archibald came to Wellsville with several of her children. Some went to Idaho and some went to Canada.

A family reunion for all descendants of Elizabeth Russell Archibald is being planned for Saturday, Sept 8, 2012 at the Wellsville, Utah bowery by cousin Brandon Sundeen. He is planning games for the younger children, sharing of family history info for the adults, followed by a memorial service at the Wellsville Cemetery. Food is POT LUCK. Bring your own lunch and all will share what they bring.

If you have any family heirlooms, photos, letters, etc.. pertaining to Elizabeth Russell Archibald or her immediate family, please bring them for viewing.

For more details contact Brandon Sundeen. Phone: 503-396-2178 OR email: brandonsundeen@gmail.com

Please help us get the word out. Pass this information on to all of your extended family so that they may attend if they are interested.

Rob,
Been searching through old Price newspapers and, rather interestingly, it seems that the Republican Party tried to encourage an E.H. Cotter to run against Robert. Until recently, Cotter had been marshall in Helper and only a few months earlier had relocated to SLC where he was now working with a railroad wrecking crew. Anyway, Cotter seemed reluctant to leave SLC (his widow was still there in the 1940s) and that left RM the only Rep candidate, so he stood unopposed. Then Thomas Kelter (D) whupped him in the general election of autumn 1910. Mind you, Kelter saw off a succession of Republican candidates.

I put this timeline together through reading the newspapers available through the link you sent. Takes time to find stuff, but it's there. Will send a copy of Draft 3 very soon.

Wow. These are fantastic links. I'd heard of the sheriff/ constable jobs from the late Leslie Ratliff, but had no concrete evidence. I'm just gobsmacked by all this new information.

I am currently writing a biography of RM with another great-grand-child, Bonnie Snow. Maybe you know her. Anyway, we have just finished a second draft of the bio. She has provided most of the info and has been invaluable. I can fill in some of the gaps over here. (My family has only moved about 8 miles since Robert left in the 1880s!)

Contact me at my email address and I'll forward the bio. It won't have your info in it, but you can see what I have and maybe add/ correct some parts.

Thanks again for these wonderful links,
Robert Menzies
boabiemenzies@hotmail.com

Hi, Robert Menzies is my great grandfather through his son James Wilson Menzies. I'd love to learn more of his family in Scotland.

He was a joiner and a carpenter but active in local organizations and politics. He ran for Carbon County sheriff in 1910 on the republican ticket but lost.

There is a useful site with digitized newspapers from Utah,
http://digitalnewspapers.org

There you can do a name search. Robert lived in Summit and Carbon counties, in Coalville, Winterquarters, and Price. He had a son and grandson also named Robert Menzies. Here are some urls:
http://udn.lib.utah.edu/cdm4/document.php?CISOROOT=/carbonco...

http://udn.lib.utah.edu/cdm4/document.php?CISOROOT=/carbonco...

http://udn.lib.utah.edu/cdm4/document.php?CISOROOT=/carbonco...

I have learned since my 26 Jun 2011 posting that the grave marker photograph was in with family photographs and papers that my mom's first cousin inherited from her dad (Harold Gordon Menzies) ... and he had a lot of photographs that he had from his mother (Celia Blanche [Smith] Menzies). We do not know why "we" have this photograph as we have not been able to trace any of the Menzies in our tree to the Janet and Robert Menzies family tree. We think that someone saw the marker, took a photo, and gave it to "our" ancestors, thinking that there was a close relationship. There may be but we have not found it.

Anyone know who owns that plot now? Presuably it was originally a child - "mother" and "father" are written on the top - but they have all passed away and owndership will have been handed down to their children (or grandchildren).

I am also a Robert Menzies. My great-grandfather, Thomas Ross Menzies (1859-1944), was RM's (1857-1933) brother.

My mom's first cousin took a photo of a Janet and Robert Menzies grave stone and put it in her Menzies genealogy research. To my knowledge, this is not the Robert Menzies that is our ancestor. FYI, the gravestone data is this:
Janet W. Menzies born March 24, 1857, died October 6, 1901.
Robert Menzies born May 13, 1857 and died October 10, 1933.

This is exciting information. Robert and Janet were my great-grand-parents. My grandmother was Violet Menzies Johnson. Clarence "Red" Johnson was my dad. I have been trying to find where in the Coalville cemetry they are laid to rest. Does anybody know the graves location?

I know this reply comes 4 years after the original post; perhaps you will still find it helpful. The Robert Menzies in question is my great grandfather. The other two in the previous post are his son and grandson. Robert Menzies, b. 13 May 1857 Glsgow Scotland d. 10 Oct 1933. His parents were
RRobert Menzies b. 1823 Glasgow, d. 20 Feb 1899 Glasgow, and Jean Rankine b. 1 Dec 1822 Fife, d. 7 Sep 1890 Glasgow. Robert (II) emigrated to Utah sometime before 1887. His wife Janet Wilson, and children Robert Buchanan 1879-1967, Jeannie Rankin 1883-1961, and James Wilson 1885-1953 followed in 1887 coming on the SS Nevada from Liverpool. Robert (II) lived in Price Utah was active in politics, served as a constable and sheriff, later moved to Scofield. He and wife Janet (Jessie) were separated by at least 1898 and divorced in 1901. She died a year later and Robert took custody of the youngest children born in Utah: Violet Elizabeth 1888-1974, Pearl May 1891-? , Nellie Menzies 1896-1949. There were tw 0other children in the family who died in infancy, Janet Whitelaw 1881-1882 and George 1890-1890.

I know this reply comes 4 years after the original post; perhaps you will still find it interesting. Janet (pronounced Janette, but they called her Jessie) Wilson Menzies was my great grandmother. She came from Glasgow via Liverpool in 1887 on the SS Nevada (October) and then by train to Ogden and then to Carbon county. According to her granddaughter, Lois Roberta Menzies, she "took up with a polygamist" in her 40s, divorced husband Robert from whom she'd been separated for about three years, and married the other. She became pregnant by him and died along with the baby due to complications (bleeding) during pregnancy. This information came to Lois second hand from her Aunt Pearl who was Janet and Robert's daugther. This information may be a little suspect. Pearl was 10 at the time. After Janet's death, Robert came and got the three little girls, Violet, Pearl and Nellie but left 16 year old son James' clothes hanging on the back of the door. James lived on his own from that time and is Lois' father and my grandfather.

There is a great possibility that these Webbers are related to me. I am currently researching the Webber family tree and have noticed that many entries in the 1800's have recorded the family births, deaths and marriages as being in the Neath locality or even in Breconshire when in fact they have lived in the Llansamlet area of Swansea - some miles away.

Do you know who Mathew Webbers parents were? If you can share any other names with me then I can try to link the family and will be happy to provide you with any information that I have. Regards Liz Harries

Joseph Graves Menzies

I am looking for an obit on my great uncle Joseph Graves Menzies. He was born 12 Sep 1900 in Schofield. His father Joseph Graves was killed in the Schofield Mine Diaster. His mother my great grandma married Robert Buchanan Menzies and Joseph was raised by him. His mothers names was Margaret Ann Morris. He died 8 March 1985 in Salt Lake. I remember my grandma had a reunion in Mt Pleasant and two of his sons came to it. Any info would be helpful
