I have recently started to do family history and I am needing some help! I have a great great uncle who I was told died in an accident, so I always thought it was an auto accident. It wasn't. I looked up his death certificate and is saying he fell at work at the amalgamated sugar company. No one in my family is alive that I can ask about this. Was hoping someone has access to his obituary or a newspaper clipping with more info for me. His name is John Moroni Moody and he was marrid to Ethel. He died on 26 Nov 1928. Any help is much appreciated.

I am sure if we keep digging we can find out more. Are you more interested in the actual happenings or of the area being re opened?

I just did some quick research. When your father started his mission in 1941 (in the Mississippi district) William P Whitaker was President of the Southern States Mission. By the end of his mission your father was in North Alabama and the Mission President was Heber Meeks. I don't know when the change took place, still looking. But at the time (ever since 1928) Cane Creek, Tennessee was in the East Central States Mission. So your father would have had to have been "loaned" to the next mission to open the area back up. Not unheard of but I was hoping to find some record of it.

The "Mormon Massacre" as it is spoken of in Utah, occurred on Sunday
morning August 10, 1844. On the night previous four Mormon preachers
came into the Cane Creek neighborhood, spending the night with Tom
Garrett. The names of these preachers were W. H. Jones, J. H. Gibbs,
W. S. Berry and Henry Thompson. It was generally understood that
services would be held on the Sunday following at the home of James
Conder, a member of the Mormon Church. Hence the citizens who were
determined in their purpose to for ever put a stop to the Mormon
preaching's, at least so far as they affected this particular vicinity
made ready and on the next morning were fully prepared. No one
believes that the disguised citizens meant any special violence toward
the preachers further than to give them a sound threshing, and to ask
that they leave the neighborhood immediately. At any rate on the
morning in question, three of the preachers, Elders Gibbs, Berry and
Thompson, proceeded on their way to to the Conder residence which was
down the creek about one mile from the home of Mr. Garrett, where the
meeting was to be held. Elder Jones, for some reason, had remained at
the Garrett residence for a short while. Soon he also left for the
Conder residence and alone. On his way and near the Conder residence
he encountered some ten or twelve masked men. The disguised men did
not offer any violence towards Jones, more than to take him in charge,
and questioned him as to the whereabouts of the other preachers.
Ascertaining that the three others had proceeded him and were then at
the Conder place, they left Jones in custody of one of their number,
continuing on their way in quest of the others.
Upon arriving at the Conder residence, they found that quite a crowd
had assembled. Old man Conder, owner of the premises was standing at
the yard gate, and when informed that he must remain in their hands
for the present, he became greatly enraged, and cried out to his son
Martin Conder, and step−son J. Riley Hudson who were then in the
orchard nearby, to get the guns quickly and come to his rescue. The
boys made for the back entrance to the house. Members of the mob,
seeing that serious trouble was eminent, also rushed for the house in
hope that they might explain, and thus avoid bloodshed. But in the
house where the audience had gathered, and singing already begun
preparatory to the regular service, and encounter occurred between
young Martin Conder and a member of the mob, young Conder snatching
the mask from the face of the party. Real trouble then began. The
preachers were at once taking a hand in the scramble and all was
confusion. Young Conder was in the act of taking a gun from the rack,
when a member of the party grappled with him. Being prevented in his
effort to obtain the gun, Conder drew a pistol, which was aimed at a
member of the party but snapped. In the excitement that prevailed, a
shot was fired which took effect in the body of Elder Gibbs. He died
almost instantly. Elder Berry was next fired upon and killed. By
this time, Elder Thompson seeing that the affair was becoming serious,
jumped out at the back door and made good his escape. At this
juncture Martin Conder who had secured another gun in the meantime,
aimed it at the party who had just shot Berry, but before he could
fire someone shot and killed him. In the affray Mrs. James Conder was
accidentally shot in the thigh but not fatally. The mob had begun its
retreat. while all this had been transpiring, J. Riley Hudson had
climbed into the loft, or stairs and procured a gun. Coming to the
door he fired a shot into the retreating mob. The shot taking effect
in the body of one of the members proving to be David Hinson, Hinson
hardly had fallen, before one of the other masked parties said; "I'll
have revenge", and aiming at Hudson fired and Hudson fell dead.
Hinson was carried away by the masked party and died two hours later.
But let us leave this awful tragedy and forget if possible the sorrow
it wrought and return to Elder Jones who was left guarded by a lone
member of the mob.
In the very outset Jones was given to understand that no harm was
intended him, furthers than he must leave the community and that
certain practices charged against him and the other preachers would
have to cease. When the shots and the screams of the women and
children were heard Jones guard is said to have exclaimed; "My God
they are shooting among the people there". He then explained to
Jones that he would give him a chance for his life, and giving him
direction to shady Grove, Hickman county this preacher was told to
make a hasty exit, which he did not hesitate to take advantage of.
The mischief did not end altogether with the loss of these five
lives. There was no further bloodshed, but feelings ran high. and as
the news of the killing spread, good people became incensed and soon
the entire neighborhood was in a stir.
Brave men, who loved their wives and daughters, avowed their readiness
to shed their life's last blood for their protection against the evil
teaching of polygamy. As it were, an "unwritten law", was enacted in
the hearts of those who opposed the new religion and it was declared
that no further Mormon Churches would be established nor preaching's
held. It was indeed a trying time. A sad epoch in the history of
Lewis County. Folks who were still inclined to remain loyal to the
Mormon faith through fear absconded. Not only members of the Mormon
Church, but many good people who had been friendly to the "Elders"
entertaining them in their homes, immediately left for other parts,
because of the unpleasantness of the situation; in many instances
leaving their near relatives behind. Families were separated.
Breaches were created that could never again be reconciled.
There was not the slightest intention of murdering these elders when
the mob went to the Conder home. There has always been more than one
theory as to who fired the first shot. Be that as it may, five
persons were killed and a sixth crippled for life.
Mrs. Conder who was shot and never recovered, drew a pension from the
Mormon Church as long as she lived. She and Mr. Conder have long
since passed thence. The massacre was the county's most bloody
tragedy.
My Dad told me the story about him and his companion, I think his name was Elder Berry, he was a great grandson of the Elder who was also killed. Anyway, the mission president called both elders and took them to TN where the murders had taken place and re opened the area. It was closed right after the massacre. I think if you google Can Creek Massacre you will find out more information. I will check this out also and see if I can find more information. My Dad will be 89 this year and his memory isn't as good as it use to be. I would like to find out if the mission president had a journal. But I don't know who he was.
Tammy

On your ancestors who may have resided in Clarkston and/or Newton you may want to check out some information on these two communities at The Cache County Utah GenWeb site at
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~utcache
in the "Towns" link under the either Clarkston or Newton -- the 1870 and 1880 censuses are available plus an extraction of newspaper articles form these towns early days until about 1900. Several of the surnames cited can be found in these sources which may provide some historical details.
Or if you have a particular ancestor in this period I may be able to give some information.

In addition the Clarkston census for 1870 and 1880 and information on the Martin Harris gravesite from mound to monument are also available.

Hello,
Thanks so much for helping me. Since posting this information I've discovered some new family history. Bartha came across the plains in 1859 with the James S. Brown Company only the spelling of her name is different. Also, I found out there was an Eli Kent family in the same pioneer group. I found out that Bartha and Dorcas Kent were sealed together on the same day to Eli Kent in Salt Lake City in October, 1859.
I'm afraid some of this preceeding information is incorrect recorded from a personal history. Eli, Dorcas, and the Kent family moved back to Pennsylvania later, and Bartha is left with her little daughter Annie. It's all very confusing. This is when she marries John Reed Blanchard. It's an ongoing search for more answers.
Anything you can find out about Bartha & this Kent family would be wonderful. I sincerely appreciate your kindness in helping me.
Gratefully,
Mavis Bassett
mavisbassett@yahoo.com

I'm searching for any information on Samuel Kent & Bartha (Jensen) Kent who lived and worked on a ranch by Wellsville Canyon 1859-1860.
Samuel & Bartha met on a Mormon wagon train coming across the plains in 1859. Samuel Kent was a scout, and Bartha Jensen was immigrating from Sweden. They travled across in the summer and were married by a Mormon Bishop in Salt Lake City after their arrival. Samuel was hired by a local rancher for the winter months. They both worked on this ranch. In the Spring, they were given money for their labor and planned to move on since the rancher didn't need the help any longer. Samuel rode up the canyon with money in his possession, and that's the last time anybody saw him again. His horse was found with blood on the saddle, and it was determined he was robbed and killed.
I'm looking for any information regarding this tragedy. We don't have any information about Samuel Kent's family before coming to Utah. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Gratefully,
Mavis Bassett
mavisbassett@yahoo.com
I am researching the John H Gibbs family and found a newspaper article from 1943 that names your father (Eugene Jens Gibbs) as a grandson of John H Gibbs who died in 1884 in Tennessee. It was in reference to your father serving a mission in the Southern States for the LDS Church. Assuming I have the right 'Eugene Jens Gibbs' from Hyrum Utah, and based on you post, I'm guessing the newspaper article was incorrect.

Well, then maybe the article was correct. I'll have to read it again. It only hints at the story of the area being opened again. But I can send you a copy. I have a paper photo copy with a blurry photo (sent in by your father's companion's parents), so you might want to get a look at the original to see the photo. When I get home I'll try to scan it and email it to you.

That story is actually one of the stories I was trying to track down, but was having difficulty finding the original source. Did you hear it from your father? Can you tell me the story as you have heard it?
Your post was quite awhile ago, so hope you are still connecting to this mailing list. I am looking for family of a male Seamons who married a Gladys Jensen in Utah. They would have been married after 1955. If you have someone like that, could you e-mail me off-line at joni@mcburney.ca.

Thank you,

Joni

3 daughters of Lovell & Ann Sherwood Bull: Sarah A. (1827-1867), Isabelle B. (1834-1933), Emily A. (1836-1887)

Dear Listers

Lovell Bull, born 1797 in Hampshire, England and later living in London, England was my g-g-grandfather. He married Ann Sherwood and together they had 11 children. Of these 11 children - three sisters migrated to the USA in 1864 and settled in Logan City, Cache County, Utah. The three girls were;

Sarah Ann Bull, born 1827 and married James Quayle on the 23rd March 1867 in Salt Lake City, Sarah died 8th Jan 1893 and as far as I can ascertain she had no children. I understand that James was twice elected mayor of Logan City.

Isabelle Bartlett Bull, born 1834 and married 1) Frederick Holland on the 14th July 1867 in Salt Lake City. 2) William Davis on the 18th February 1870 at Providence and 3) George Martin Peacock in 1879 at Logan City. Isabelle died on the 16th November 1933 just 6 months short of her one-hundredth birthday. I believe that in total Isabelle had three children one of whom was named Lovell after Isabelle’s father.

Emily Ann Bartlett Bull, born 1836 and married James Mortimer on the 24th July 1865, Emily Ann died on the 18th June 1887. I understand that Emily had 7 children by her husband James.

The three daughters are interred at Logan City Cemetery

I would like any other pieces of information about these three girls, their lives and their descendants, most especially if anyone has photographs they would be very much appreciated. Equally I have a great deal of information regarding the Bull family in England & I am more than willing to share.

Regards

Colin Bull
