Looking for Paul Bryant Harper with Elephant Butte Damn project

I am looking for Paul Bryant Harper who was stationed in El Paso in July 1933 as an engineer with the Elephant Butte Dam project. As of 1944, he and his wife Grace (Guest) Harper were still there. Paul often went by his middle name, Bryant, or PB. He was born abt 1884 in Grand Chenier, LA and moved about 1900 to the area of Sidney, Richland Co, Montana.

He had one son, Dale.

This side of my family has disappeared off the family radar. If you can help, I would appreciate it!

Probably what you'll need to look for is a "delayed birth record"; MOST folks did not have birth certificates as we know them, back in the day, until they needed proof to apply for a SS# later in life.
Information on Texas birth records here should help:
http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/arc/local/aboutrecords.html

My father, John Maxwell was born in El Paso, Texas. His date of birth was 6-24-14. I am searching for his birth certificate and vital records don't have record of his birth. He was in military service, WWII. How did he serve without a birth cert? Can anyone tell me where to search now? Thank you, Stella

Hilder Y. [H.Y.] Anderson, railroad contractor, El Paso, early 1901

We seek any info about the nature of the project Mr. Hilder Y Anderson was doing in El Paso, possibly for the Rock Island Railroad, in 1901. Mr. Anderson was a Swedish railroad contractor who died in Dec. 1902 while supervising a railroad project in Leeds, Kansas City, Missouri. A news story about him said he had been doing a project in El Paso prior to work in KC. His work in KC was for the Rock Island Railroad. Perhaps it was for Rock Island in El Paso as well. Would appreciate any guidance or help so much! [There may also be a Tucumcari connection.

Jeanne Rollberg

From the Mobile, Alabama Newspaper

Friday, July 16, 1909

"Beroujon & Sands , well-known local undertakers, Wednesday afternoon received a message from Nelily Leuenberg , a former Mobilian, now living in El Paso, Tex., announcing the death of his wife, formerly a Miss Ziegler of this city. Arrangements were made to have the remains brought to Mobile for interment and Beroujon & Sands were wired to take charge of the funeral upon arrival of remains in Mobile. The firm wired an El Paso undertaker relative to the matter and Wednesday night at a late hour received a reply that Mrs. Leuenberg was not dead and that a mistake had been made. The good news was gladly received by many relatives and friends in Mobile."

Not my line, just sharing.

My family was the last to actually live in and leave La Smelda. I was around thirteen and going to El Paso High. The City could not find a school for the seventh graders, as none of the middle schools wanted us. We had an unwarranted reputation of being bad. We weren't. We were just poor and Mexican. The answer was to send the Smeltertown seventh-graders to El Paso High School. We spent all day in one room with one teacher, who would teach us a different subject each hour. When the bell rang we could go to the bath room or water fountains then go back and pull out the text book for the next subject. My parents would pick up my sisters from school and my familiy would go house-shopping, but I preferred to take the public bus from Schuster and Mesa to Smeltertown. The bus would pull over to a ghost town and let me off - there was no one living there any more, but us. The rest of the day and weekends I would rummage through the empty houses. Most were just shells, as the lumber and glass had been taken by the occupants that had left them. Often there was no roof, no doors or windows. With much effort I would knock walls over some times. It was odd living in a ghost town.

You can stand down on the excitement about Johanna Frederica. Johanna was the first child of young Albert and Mary MacKinlay (nee Kirby)and she was named after his mother Jonanna Frederica Magdelana Freyin von Fraudendorf (Source: "Thomas Ancestors, A History of the Thomas Family" complied by mark Everett Thomas, Sr and Helen Lucille (Chapman) Thomas. Details coincide with records of the late Gordon Kirby of Australia.

Gordon's records have Albert dying after 7 July 1891 (which, without checking was Census date). Importantly Gordon records that he was a labourer living in Deltano? Street in San Francisco in 1893. A fairly old labourer!! There is also reference to Millsville, Shasta County, California at the time of his death.

Certainly san fran was a hub for the males - the females tending to spread with their husbands.

Somewhere I have a record of a patent application lodged - to do with railways and from a fading memory it was a spark arrestor - or similar. Some years ago a railway enthusiast was going to send a cc of the application. Post in this part of the world can be slow!

Can you please forward some further info / clues in relation to the Opera singers.

Time beats me. Hope that the above has added a bit. You will find the Thomas book a very readable read, a history lesson with real people and factually informative based on personal research. It was though a limited edition (125 cc) and I have one so have been able to trawl through it from time to time.

Mike Kirby

Thomas also records his father served in the Saxon Army and being attached to Napoleon I in during the Russian Campaign.

My ancestor is Catherine (Kate) Wichmann. Kate's sister, Jacobine, is my great-grandmother. Kate was married first to Count Gaspari in about 1874. Gaspari was born in Italy and that is all I know of him. They were later divorced.

Kate and Albert St. Luz-von Boden were married in El Paso TX in 1883. Kate was born to Johann Friedrich Wichmann and Chartrine (maiden, Salling) on May 15, 1849 or 1850. Kate had 5 brothers and 3 sisters. All 3 sisters were famous opera singers and opera teachers. Her parents (dad was a physician) emmigrated from Apenrade, Schleswig-Holstein, Denmark (where all 9 children had been born) to San Francisco, CA in the mid 1860's. Over the next 6 years or so they brought all nine of their children overseas to San Francisco.

Kate had quite a colorful life. You mentioned a child of hers, Johanna Frederica. I was blown away by this! My grandfather (who was Kate's nephew) told me Kate never had any children. The census records bear this out. For example, in the 1900 and 1910 census it asks how many children were born, and a "0" is entered for Kate each time. The child's name you give is quite compelling because it is the feminized version of Kate's father's name. If you have any more info on this child please let me know.

Albert St. Luz-von Boden died before 1900, because on the 1900 census, Kate is listed as a widow. I have a public family tree on ancestry.com. The name of the tree is "Cole-Lowe". You are most welcome to visit ancestry.com, find my tree, and look up the people you are interested in. I would love to hear from you anytime.

My grandmother went to El paso High School in the late 1920's. I am from SoCal visiting El paso. We happen to have 2 yearbooks, but went to visit the school out of general interest. At El Paso High School (built in 1916)they have a museum of sorts. An administrator at the school gave me the name of the woman who heads up the museum. Her name is Mildred Hamlyn 915-833-3503. she has records of who graduated in each year, as well as yearbooks. Also there is a website called Border Heritage that my mom found that had scanned in copies of old yearbooks. Lastly, there was another high school built circa 1930 called Austin High School (the rival high school). Hope that helps.
