Designation "Number exists***, **Death F" in Texas Birth Index

Many people have been confused by the designation "Number exists***, **Death F" in the Father's Name Field in the Texas Birth Index.

I emailed the Texas Department of State Health Services and according to them:

This designation is actually **DEATH FILE NUMBER EXISTS***, and it means that the baby was deceased. At the time that the birth certificate was data entered, the only way to make the notation in the electronic record that the baby was deceased was to enter this in the father’s name fields. The actual birth certificate will show the name of the father if that information was available, and the birth certificate will be stamped "DECEASED."

This format is outdated, however, and no longer used.

Note: Several people have pointed out to me that Texas has made mistakes with this designation, so use good judgment and further research when you see this designation in the Index.

Thomas Bell

I am looking for any information on Thomas (possibly William Thomas) Bell b. btw 1781-1790 in either South Carolina or Kentucky. At some point he settled in the area of Noah’s Fork of the Duck River which was located in what became Rutherford co. TN in 1803, Bedford co. in 1807, and then eventually Coffee Co. TN in 1836.

He is on the 1830 Bedford County census as head of household with 7 males and 7 females. I am trying to connect him to the individuals below and prove that they are all one family unit. I found him on the 1836 Coffee County tax list with no white polls so age matches up. He is listed on the 1840 Coffee County census with 3 males and 4 females. According to Goodspeed’s History of Tennessee, Coffee County Thomas Bell was one of the early settlers of Coffee County’s 3rd district which was originally part of Bedford County. He no longer appears on the 1850 census for Coffee County but there are a number of interesting names enumerated in his former place in District 3.

1.	Family #349 William Nivens and Jane “Jennie” (Bell) Nivens b. 1816 in Tennessee. They married in 1834 and also appear in the 1840 Coffee County census. They owned property on Noah’s Fork near the Thomas Bell estate. The reference I came across stated that some of the land may have been inherited by William’s wife Jane who’s father’s name was Thomas and that William also purchased some of it that her brother John had inherited. There is a John Bell listed on the 1840 Coffee county census that would have been the right age to be one of Thomas Bell’s sons from the 1830 Bedford county census. Jane Bell Nivens also falls into the right age category. William and Jane eventually sold their property and moved their family to Green, Lawrence County, Missouri about 1853. They both died in Missouri but several of their children eventually settled in Alvord, Wise county, Texas.
2.	Family #352 James Baker and Mercy (Bell) Baker b. 1813 in Tennessee. Mercy Bell Baker falls into the right age category to be one of Thomas Bell’s daughters from the 1830 Bedford Co. census. These are my ggg-grandparents. They were married in 1838 and were living in Dekalb county Alabama in 1840. By 1843 they are in Coffee County. They eventually moved to Green, Lawrence county, Missouri around 1853 then on to Alvord, Wise county, Texas.
3.	Family #354 Thomas Bell (also William Thomas) b. 1825 Tennessee and Sarah (Crosslin) Bell. I have seen a lot of conflicting information about date of death for Thomas Bell and who his father was but according to an entry I found in the Coffee County, Tennessee County Court Loose Records he passed away in 1851.
4.	Family #355 James L. Bell b. 1830 Tennessee and Elizabeth Bell b. 1788 Virginia. Both their ages fit to be the youngest child and widow of Thomas Bell from the 1830 Bedford Co. Census. By the 1860 Coffee Co. census there are no longer any Bells living in District 3 so I am unsure what happened to them.
5.	Family #357 Josiah Bell b. 1818 Tennessee and Margaret (Hart) Bell. Josiah and Margaret were married in 1845. Josiah Bell falls into the correct age group to be one of the sons of Thomas Bell on the 1830 Bedford Co. census and possibly living with his brother John on the 1840 Coffee Co. census. Josiah and Margaret eventually moved their family to Green, Lawrence, Missouri around 1853 and then eventually on to Grayson Co. Texas. I also came across a reference to a Hart wagon train from the Bedford/Coffee county area that left for Greene co. Missouri in the fall of 1852 so perhaps this is how they all ended up in Missouri. Greene and Lawrence are neighboring counties in Missouri.

Many of the children of these individuals share names such as William, Thomas, James, John, Jane, and Elizabeth. Mercy Bell Baker named one of her sons David Joshiah as well as naming her youngest son William Lafayette. The Lafayette is shared with James Lafayette Bell, youngest son of the younger Thomas.

As of yet, I have been unable to find any information online regarding wills, deeds, probate records etc that would tie these people together.

Any information on any of these individuals or family lines would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Amber
Hi,

I checked the Census records but didn't find W. F. Smith in Wise County during that time frame. He didn't appear on the 1880 Census and almost all of the 1890 Census was destroyed by fire.

His death didn't appear either but death records weren't required by the State of Texas at that time. Maybe he didn't die.

Your best bet for additional information is the newspaper if one existed in that area in 1884. Your local library can help you find that. If a newspaper did exist and was microfilmed, your local library can request via inter-library transfer the microfilm copies. Successful Searching!
Sorry, R F Fennell is NOT listed in the cemetery records in Decatur with parents and at least one brother. The Wise Co genweb has very good records. His grave must be unmarked. Can not tell you why as his wife Bernice Moore was not mentioned but she was very much alive at the time.

groom's name:	Bob Fennell
groom's birth date: 1903
groom's birthplace:
groom's age: 22
bride's name: Bernice Moore
bride's birth date: 1906
bride's birthplace:
bride's age: 19
marriage date: 31 Aug 1925
marriage place: Wichita Falls, Wichita, Texas
I am a volunteer researcher for the Texas Peace Officers Memorial. On 20 March 1938 Wichita Falls special officer Robert F. "Bob" FENNELL was shot and killed trying to make an arrest. His body was shipped to Decatur in Wise County by Hines Mortuary. His survivors were listed as his mother Mrs. R.W. FENNELL and two daughters - Eddie Ruth FENNELL and Jacqueline FENNELL. He also left two brothers - J.D. FENNELL of Wichita Falls and John FENNELL of Decatur. Three sisters - Mrs. J. HUDSON & Miss Lula FENNELL of Decatur and Miss Mary FENNELL of Wichita Falls. I am searching for his place of burial and any information on surviving family members.

One of posse men, Dr. W.F. SMITH, was shot and allegedly mortally wounded. Did he die form his wounds? If so where is he buried? Any family history?

In August 2010, I simply referenced family trees. Should have researched a little. 1860 GA-Walker-East Armuchee-Image 6 for Wm M Puryear(51) head-of-household. 1870 GA-Walker Subdivision 145-Image 64 for Mary "Puryer"(52) head-of-household. There is a Frances M. Puryear on 1867 California Voter Registration Rolls but that's not him! He was too young to vote at age 16. By 1880 Frances found in Texas. There's evidence younger brother George W. was also, briefly, in Texas. George maried "Nealie" aka Cornelia V. Frye, 5 Dec 1897, in Wheeler County, TX. They're found next in Oklahoma and George eventually returned to Georgia.

I am a descendant of Francis Marion Puryear and Anna E. Brown (Broun)'s daughter Clementine Puryear. According to our records Clementine was born in 1878 in McKinney, Texas. She later married William McMillan and moved to Salt Lake, Utah where she died in 1952. I have seen her listed under the name of Klema on one of the 1800 Census records.

Our records end at Francis Marion Puryear and Anna E. Brown. I know this post is older, but I thought that I would see if you had any additional information/documents on the family. Thanks!

My branch of the Brittains were previously from Indiana, Iowa & Missouri. Mary Jane Brittain (1835-1912) married John Brown Nicholson & moved to Wise County, Texas by 1880. Her niece, Elizabeth Brittain moved to Wise County Texas probably around 1893.

I know there were Brittains already in Wise County at that time, and I suspect they came here because of them, but I don't know what their connection was. Does anyone have any information about the Brittains in Wise County prior to 1880?

From what I can tell "Lizzie" Brittain married Isaac Perkins in 1899 in Wise County, Texas, and later married W. H. Lane. Elizabeth had a daughter Minnie (Brittain) Perkins who married Olin Taylor and had Isaac & Esterbee(?).

If there's anyone who has any information of any of these family members, or their descendants I would like to talk to you. My family has had a knowledge of a Bridgeport, TX connection, but they didn't know what the connection was. I would love to find out more about the Texas Brittain connection for my dad.

Thank you for any help you can give,
Dawn

I find my gg grandparents in the 1860,1870,1880 census in these two counties, the family story told by my great grandmother to me was that one of her brothers killed either their father or stepfather for beating their mother. Rhoda Edwards was married to James Neeley/Nealy/Neely and to James M Wright. She is on the census with Wright on the 1860 census, then with James Neely on the 1870 census and as a Wright widow on the 1880 census. She is in Denton in 1860, Plano in 1870,and 1880 Justice precinct 3 Wise county. I know that she moved to Colorado with my Great grandmother and her siblings. The children were John Henry, Rufus, Clarence Goliad, William W. James Robert and Sarah C. they used both surnames. Any help from anyone would be appreciated.

Not all records are online. Call the county clerk and request a "quickie" lookup. It's simple 'cause marriages are indexed by groom and by bride for specific time-periods. They'll tell you if the record is available and how you can obtain copies. http://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/voter/cclerks.shtml#M

George Washington Walker was my great-great grandfather. His daughter, Rosa Walker, was my great grandmother. My grandfather was Buford Leon Walker, born in Alvord, TX, in 1898. His name was changed to Buford Leon Gibson in 1910 census (after Mrs. Walker married James Gibson), then in 1917 his name was listed on WWI draft card as Buford Leon Jones. His father was reportedly named George Jones. No record of George and Rosa ever marrying. I have been unable to find anything about her mother... only a name of Loutitia, handed down through family stories. I am interested in any information you all find on your Walker-Keen union. Maybe it will lead to info that might help me with my search. Thanks!

I am curious to know more about the influx of population to Wise County in the 1880s and 1890s. My understanding is that the county's population increased rapidly in the 1880s and continued to grow, even through the depression of the 1890s.

The elaborate 1896 courthouse suggests that the county's leaders had a grand vision for the region--although the voters certainly disagreed--even in the middle of the depression. (Before the 1930's, the term "Great Depression" referred to the period from 1893 to 1899).

My THOMAS cousins arrived rather late, between 1895 and 1898, but seemed to do alright--probably better than some who stayed behind in Georgia. I've noticed other families came to Wise County from the northern counties of Georgia and Alabama during that period, as well. Economic conditions in Southern Appalachia were certainly an incentive to leave, but I'm wondering why they happened to choose Wise County as their destination.

What were the factors that attracted settlers to Wise County in the 1880s and '90s? Was it simply cheap land?

Then, why did the population decline after 1900? Did the next generation leave to seek employment in the cities or was it something else? Interestingly, the population remained relatively steady during the 1930s, suggesting that Wise County was less affected by the Dust Bowl than places farther west.

From an Internet friend and other sources I have the following which may be correct. Austin married:
(1) Lavina "Vina" Jane Nickols 11 Jul 1844 in Henry, TN; Elisha D. Hicks (1847-1920) died in Johnson County, TX.; 4th child: Mary Elizabeth (Hicks) Cheatham (1849-1933);
(2) Caroline Bradley 20 Oct 1861 in Ellis, TX; son Henry Holman Hicks, b. 25 Nov 1861 in Wise, Texas and died 28 May 1949;
(3) Mrs. Jane Tubberville 28 Sep 1865, Johnson Co., TX (Texas Marriages, 1814-1909); dau. Rutha Hicks b. 1867 in Wise, TX; dau. Lavina Hicks b. 1873 in Wise, TX; and
(4) Dicey Wooley 10 May 1877 in Parker Co., TX. (Texas Marriages, 1814-1909).
["John Tubbville", listed as the 16 year old stepson of Austin Hicks in the US 1880 census Wise Co., TX is likely the son of Mrs. Jane Tubberville and Mr. Tubberville one year before she married Austin Hicks.]
How can I help you with family information? Sometimes I go to the SLC library and look through their books and film.
If you have information on the children of Dicey Wooley and Austin Hicks, please let me know.
Thanks.
