Does anyone know it's location? And does anyone have a transcription of the graves contained in this cemetery? Specifically looking for: William David Curbow and/or Oliver Perry Curbow. Thank you.

The State Hospital Cemetery has not been surveyed. All of the graves at the cemetery are only marked with a number and no names supposedly to protect the identity of the people committed to the hospital. If you call the state hospital, they can tell you if someone is buried there or not.

Thanks so much for you quick reply. I'll check with them tomorrow. Do you know anything about the state hospital itself. I saw online that it was for "the insane...." My ancestor William David Curbow was said to have died there...and I'm just curious generally about the type of patients there, etc. Do you know where it was located? Thank you !

It is still located on Kemp St. which used to be called Lake Road. It is right across the road from Lake Wichita. It was for the insane but not necessarily criminal. In the past people were committed for all sorts of reasons from drug addiction to alcoholics to people who were deaf or mute. There were all sorts of diseases back then that could be treated with medication today that back then they were just committed. What does his death certificate say that he died of? Was it related to his committal? Julie

I am from Wichita Falls and was a nurse who worked at the state hosp back in 1970 & 1971. many of the people who were patients were not mentally ill; some were there because there was no psychiatric facility at that time or family's thought they were crazy & had them put there. In the 70's many nursing homes in WF started taking patients from there that were not deemed dangerous. 2 Nursing home that I worked in exclusively took only patients from there; Sad, most had family but but didnt want to deal w/"crazy relatives". email me & I can fill you in on more rdodd56954@aol.com

They actually did call me back. They gave me the information over the telephone. They say that my ancestor actually is not in their records as being buried in the cemetery. If you google....Wichita Falls State Hospital (the name has since changed) ... you will find the contact information. They were actually quite friendly and helpful.
