Hi! Still have not been able to nail down birth location. New info that I have: B. 19 Aug 1852; D. 3 Sep 1896. Your Leroy Mason b. abt. 1843 in OH affords hope. Any census' that I have tied to "Joe" indicate birth location as England. I did find one that said he had last BEEN in OH. I'll follow up on Leroy and see what I can find. Some think Joe had a brother, James, who shows up with Joe on a few census'.

saw your post, i am also looking for any information on Joe Mason, deputy sheriff Dodge City. Been told my Great grandfather Frank Mason of St. Paul, Ne. born 1874 possibly had brothers who went to kansas, that is all I know except my 2 sons look identical ( minus mustache) to photo of Joe Mason in Time Life book of 'the gunfighters'. They could be brothers! any information appreciated.

Hmmm. Really, by this time, our area was no longer the hub of anything. We originally were the only judicial district over 26 counties in Texas, but they were seperated by 1913. Can you give me more info, like, what did they do for a living? Perhaps it was business or a funeral. I really can't find anything significant during that time period. Mobeetie, in Wheeler County, is the oldest town in the Texas Panhandle. If they were history buffs this might be it. Sorry, just some ideas.

Murder of Ruth Vaughan in 1930

I would like to communicate with anyone who recalls hearing anything about the murder of Ruth Vaughan in 1930 on the Vaughan farm southeast of Shamrock in Collingsworth County. She was the wife of Henry Vaughan, the son of Hal Vaughan, a prominent citizen of Shamrock. A young black hired hand, Jesse Lee Washington, was tried, convicted and executed for the crime on the basis of the testimony of Henry Vaughan and his 13 year old brother George, as well as a confession obtained shortly after the arrest by Sheriff Claude McKinney, County Attorney Luther Gribble and District Attorney James C. Mahan. At the time, mobs of white men quickly appeared and told blacks in and around Shamrock and in nearby Beckham County to leave the area for their own protection. Two years after the trial, Henry Vaughan died. Both Henry and Ruth along with Hal and his wife are buried in the same plot in the Shamrock Cemetery.

The venue was moved to Roberts County and the entire trial lasted about 12 hours. The jury was selected in the morning. Trial began at 2:00. Washington pleaded guilty and "threw himself on the mercy of the court." The jury reached its verdict of guilty with recommendation for the death penalty that evening after deliberating for 15 minutes. And Washington was electrocuted in Huntsville in September.

Dr. J. W. Gooch of Shamrock served as coroner.. He testified that Ruth was bludgeoned to death and died of a fractured skull. He also testified that Mrs. Vaughan was not sexually assaulted.

I would also like to know where Henry Vaughn died so that I can obtain a death certificate. I have been unable to find him in the Texas Death Registry.

My father, who at that time was living on a farm east of Shamrock, once told me about the case. He said that some local folks believed that Henry murdered Ruth and pinned the crime on Jesse.

Don Green

I also found that story by Francis' sister where they referred to him as Marion within his family. It was very interesting as it referred to Jeriah (as spelled on death certificate) as Geriah Lee. I did some more digging and found the marriage records listing her as Geriah Marcum as well here: http://www.looktothepast.com/webstermarriages05.html

I hope we can find more.
Janice - I will have to pull out the "genealogy tub" I have tonight to ensure I give you all the correct info I have. The picture of the twins (with Abigail York) came from a book a relative put together several years ago. Not all the info is exact, but I will give you what I have. I really believe the name "Turk" came from someone mis-transcribing the name "York". I have several pics of Jeriah - not sure if you have seen any of them. She met George Henry York at Fort Griffin where she supposedly was a seamstress for the men who lived at the fort. There is a website (New Mexico Genealogy Trails) with a story written by Wanda Browning Falk – Jeriah York’s first husband’s (Francis Marion McCarty) sister whose husband (Joe Browning) shot and killed FM McCarty over an argument about a calf. The link is http://genealogytrails.com/newmex/lincoln/lincolnnm_mrsjab_9... I just noticed that Jeriah is spelled with a "G" in that story! I am attaching a really cute picture of Jeriah when she was older wearing a long dress - she looks so tiny!...plus a newspaper article of her death. Not sure if you have seen this or not..and hope it posts ok! I have always been told we have some American Indian in our bloodline but no one could ever tell me who it was. I really do think it was Jeriah. I am also looking for more info on her. Also, the info I have says that George Henry was born on the ship as it sailed across the Atlantic when his parents came to America from England. They lived in Portland, ME, and I cannot locate any record of his birth occurring on a ship! Sounds like a romantic tale to me and probably isn't true! My mother used to tell me that someone (and I'm thinking it was him) stowed away on a ship from England when he was about 16 years old.(?) I haven't had time lately to do much research - have you ever heard any of these stories? I will send you what I have this weekend. Let me know if you got the pic and were able to view it. I tried attaching a pdf file and it wouldn't let me. I will get back to you soon! Karen ps - she is my 2nd Great-grandmother, so we are distant cousins!

Karen,

I would love more information on Jeriah. She is my 3rd great grandmother and the lineage seems to stop there. My grandfather often talked of our indian heritage through her and I would love to know more about it. I have tried all the combination of names for her I could find and Turk, Lee, Marcum all seem to be associated to her as well. My lineage runs through her daughter Abigail.
Mobeetie TX, orpahn Georgie Cole

Looking for Georgie I. Cole (1887-1978)and her parents.
She married Tad R Knowles (1890-1980). They lived in or near Doyleville &/or Sargent, Saguache Co., Colorado and later in Golden, Jefferson Co., Colorado.

Georgie Cole was orphaned. She and her brother Dana were taken in by their uncle Charlie Cole of Mobeetie, TX. First, Dana "ran away" from the uncle and later Georgie left too.

Does the name Charlie Cole ring a bell with anyone in Mobeetie, Wheeler Co., TX?

The name Slate is also in this part of the family. It is possible that Georgie and Dana's last name was Slate and that uncle Charlie adopted them and their last name was changed. Just a possibility.

And finally, if it helps, Tad R(alph) and Georgie I Cole Knowles' children include: twins Byron T and (Hattie) Jean, Pollyanna, Ralph C(ole), and Woodbury A(ustin)(b.1920).
obit and article for Willett

OBITUARY
Dire prognosis at birth couldn't crack Peanuts' spirit
By PEGGY O'HARE
Copyright 2010 Houston Chronicle
Dec. 1, 2010, 11:49PM
1 2 .
Chronicle file
Junior Willett at City Hall Annex, 1987

• Visitation: 5-8 p.m. tonight, with a rosary to be said at 7 p.m., at Claire Brothers Funeral Home, 7901 Hillcroft, Houston, TX, 77081

• Funeral Mass: 11 a.m. Friday at Resurrections Catholic Church, 915 Zoe, Houston, TX, 77020
When Archie "Junior" Willett was born in the 1920s with cerebral palsy, doctors predicted he would never walk or talk. But he proved them wrong and achieved a life of success despite that dire prognosis.

He didn't receive much formal schooling, but his daddy showed him how to count, taught him the letters of the alphabet, how to tell time and how to read his name. Despite his disabilities and limited speech, Willett parlayed his father's rudimentary instruction into a successful entrepreneurial career selling bags of peanuts to the crustiest of customers — Houston police officers, attorneys, prosecutors and other civil servants.

For decades, Willett's late mother would drive him to the old Houston Police Department building at 61 Riesner and the former criminal courthouse at 301 San Jacinto, where she would drop him off and wait in the car as he hauled his cart up the stairs and went inside alone, wandering from office to office and selling bags of the treats for 50 cents each, earning himself the nickname "Peanuts." In a 1963 Houston Chronicle article, reporter Jack Weeks called Willett "courage with a peanut bag over its shoulder."

Willett, 82, died Nov. 20 in Tomball from sepsis and complications of a heart attack, family members said.

His family and friends are remembering him for his humor, courage and determination in the face of adversity.

"He never considered himself handicapped. He never let his disabilities get in his way - never, never, never," said his brother, Ray Willett, 77, of Magnolia. "I'll tell you, that man has changed a lot of people's lives ... He was just a very independent person - stubborn, hardheaded. He was determined.

"He would always greet people with a smile. If they didn't have any money, he would give them the peanuts. That's the kind of person he was. He was a legend in his own right."

He loved people
Willett also sold peanuts for years at the Brown & Root plant and later outside a Kroger grocery store that used to be at the intersection of Bellaire and Synott in far west Houston.

He was good at it because he loved people, his family said.

"He had a great attitude, and he didn't know what defeat was," said his sister-in-law, Ginny Willett of Magnolia. "He loved being out and seeing people. He loved meeting people. He had a great sense of humor. And he was stubborn and hard-headed, but I think that was part of his I-don't-give-up attitude."

Born in Shamrock in 1928, Willett was the oldest of five boys raised by Archie and Helen Willett. He attended school until the second or third grade, then began selling peanuts in the 1940s on Lyons Avenue in his east Houston neighborhood, his brother said.

$100 a week
In the 1950s, he began making rounds at the police station and courthouse.

After a car struck Willett in 1954, breaking his right leg in 17 places, Willett healed and resumed his sales career. By 1963, he was making more than $100 a week from his peanut sales.

When customers couldn't understand what he said, he would put pencil to paper "displaying a wry humor in his notes," Weeks reported.

"He was out there trying to make a go of it," said retired Houston police officer J.B. Haney, who served on the force from 1959 until 2002. "It was tough on him to get up the stairs, but he did. He was a fixture around there - everybody knew him. He always had a good temperament - he was smiling. He was good-natured."

Some police officers loved to rib Willett, asking for samples of his peanuts to see if they were any good before buying them, but Willett would refuse, recalled former Houston police investigator Forrest Turbeville, who retired in 1978.

Willett would tell them, "I'm a po' boy," Turbeville recalled.

Willett walked the halls of government buildings with his bag and later pushing a cart. "And he did this for years. I'm talking years and years and years," Turbeville said.

You'd find him at church
Sometimes he'd take a bus to reach his destinations. But in later years, Willett rode a motorized scooter with a basket on the front to sell his peanuts. He used the same scooter to ride to Mass at St. Justin Martyr Catholic Church every Sunday.

"That boy, he went to church every Sunday - every Sunday. He never missed church. As long as I can remember, he was always close to God," his brother said.

By the early 1990s, Willett had moved his peanut sales to west Houston, where he would sit outside the Kroger store that used to be at Bellaire and Synott, about seven or eight blocks from his house. He sold peanuts there for at least seven years, his family said.

After his mother died, Willett lived alone for a short time and later spent eight years at West Oaks Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in southwest Houston, where he worked as a greeter. He loved his baseball caps, the Houston Astros and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

'Gave so much of himself'
After suffering a heart attack in October, he spent several days in the hospital and his health declined. He was eventually moved to a Hospice facility in Tomball, where he died several weeks later.

His life is a lesson in humility, honesty, hard work, humor and love of God, his brother said.

"If I had the personality my brother had, I could have been anything I wanted to be - anything - because he loved people and gave so much of himself," Ray Willett said.

"Everyone loved 'Peanuts,'" Haney wrote on a tribute page dedicated to the peanut salesman. "He will be missed. We need more Americans like him."

peggy.ohare@chron.com

My great-uncle, John Frederick (Fred) Bryant was from Alton, Illinois but worked on a ranch near Shamrock. According to his Alton obituary, he was killed on or around December 23, 1915 but not other details were available. Does anyone know about newspaper articles from that era? The Shamrock Public Library says that their collection begins in 1920.

Found a newspaper article relating to my husband's Boswell family of Cumby,Hopkins Co., TX. I am curious as to why these men drove to Wheeler Co., TX. I haven't come across any family there. Anything going on in Wheeler County at the time? Maybe just some wanderlust?

H.C. Mathis, Merit Branom, Dave Green and D.G. Boswell of Cumby were here Wednesday morning. They were on their way the Wheeler county via automobile.
The Commerce Journal (TX) Friday 16 May 1913.

Thank you
Robin Boswell

Gene,

Looks like you and I are at about this same stage of research.

I have a family picture (actually now in the possession of my daughter) taken probably in Lefors or McLean Texas circa 1910...but possibly in Erick, OK a year or two later. There are names written on the back and one of them is Grace Wolf. There is also an Upchurch (Mitt?). I remember that Jessie Hood and John Hood are also listed. My grandmother Hannah (Mclain, Herrmann) is in the picture but all the others are Hoods. This whole thing started with this darned picture and me trying to figure out who is who. Now I'm hopelessly addicted.

I have found that John Morgan Hood was born in Henderson, NC 03/24/1840. I would like more info on who and how many Hoods were in the area at that time.

I'll bookmark this site and check back to see what you find or add anything I find out. Don't know if they allow email contact but I am at wch2@charter.net.

Bill

Hello, Uncle Oscar and Aunt Molly were my grandfathers sister and her husband. they all lived on a farm in Lela, TX. which is outside of Shamrock. There were four generations of us born and raised in Lela and Shamrock on the farm. My Grandparents ( Molly's brother ) are John Alexander Moore and Cornie Elizabeth Parsons Moore. My Daddy was Corbett Lee Moore the next to the younger child of Papa and Mama Moore. Uncle Oscar and Aunt Molly lived on the farm by my grandparents and all us their kids and then some of us (grandkids) We moved to Pampa in the late 50's but Papa and Mama stayed on the farm and then moved into town (Shamrock) due to Papa's health. I am also taking with an Erik who is a relative of ours too. What is your name and where did you go to elementary school? Would love to hear from you, it's wonderful finding relatives again. I've been fortunate and have found a lot on my Papa Moore's side of the family. His sister Musie's granddaughter found me and she lives in Arizona and comes to Texas occasionally. They went back to Davidson Cty, Tenn. and Virginia were the Moore and Parsons and Bates family originated from too... Let me know you e-mail and we can get together and exchange our family info... My name is Patricia and I am Corbett and Belva's daughter, I also have a brother and a sister(deceased in 2003).Lots of Moore's and Parson's and Aunt Molly was a wonderful lady.

Thank you very much for checking. I had assumed Fannie's death certificate was correct, but that must not be the case. I will concentrate my efforts in Erath Co where her mother is listed in the 1880 census with her family. I do appreciate your time!

I did not find Hazel Francis Williams born in Wheeler County Texas. The birth index for this county is from 01/01/1800 - 12/31/1949. There are several Williams but not that name or date.

Searching for any information on this family & trying to verify info on Fannie's death certificate (1980 WA). Fannie's mother was Annie Gordon supposedly married to Frank Williams. Death certificate states Fannie was born July 2, 1886 in Wheeler TX. Is there any way to verify she was born there at that time?

Her mother, Annie, was born abt 1867 in Erath Co to James Caroll Gordon and Nancy McCarty. After death of James, Nancy married Henry Porter in 1874 in Erath Co. They moved to Soccoro/Catron Co., NM bef 1900. I have no information at all on Frank Williams. Appreciate any leads.
I saw your quiery where you mentioned Howard Leake. We had several Leake's that lived here in Mobeetie, which is about 28 miles from Shamrock.Howard B Leake, Ruby Faye Leake, Edwin Leake and walter Leake. You can look them up on Find A Grave.com. Mobeetie cemetery.
It may be a different family, but it doesn't hurt to let you know.

Thank You! Thank You! This was more than I had hoped for. I can hardly believe that you were able to be so "right on" with my query!

From what I remember/oral history my Grampa Howard Leake was not much of a farmer, but did more work with his hands. Mother tells of him being a mechanic on oil and gas wells and that sort of thing and being a carpenter. My Gramma Myrl Leake was a skilled seamstress and did work for the people who could afford her services. My mother, Cornelia Clovene, aka, Connie and aka, Clovene had two older sisters, Zorene and Katherine (aka, Jessie) and a younger brother, John Felton.

Please, Pat, excuse any misspellings (no spell check here) and any grammatical errors. I am so excited to receive a response my hands get faster than my brain, and sometimes my brain doesn't even engage at all!

I hope we can continue our conversation. Please contact me at my personal e-mail.

My Kindest Regards,
Susan

Susan,
Hi! My mother, whose maiden name was Genevieve Bennett graduated at the age of 16 in 1940 from Shamrock High School. (I wasn't sure so I went and looked at her senior ring.) Mom passed away in 2003. I think, my aunt Jane (Virginia Bennett) graduated the same year. She was two years older that my mom but my mom told me that they started first grade together. That is why my mom graduated at 16. Anyway, my aunt is still living and I will call her in the next few days and ask her if she remembers your mother. She's never been as good as my mom was about remembering things from the past but maybe she will remember something. After her first husband drowned she worked as a nurse in Shamrock. My grandparents had a farm outside of Shamrock at China Flat (which we still own) and also farmed near Twitty and they had a farm at Lutie (no longer there). My grandparents and their children were members of the Shamrock Church of Christ and lived in Shamrock until they died in 1972 and 1977. I have an aunt by marriage that still lives there but she is not originally from Shamrock so she would be of no help.
I know what you mean about not having asked enough questions. I'm constantly asking myself why I didn't ask mom this or that.
I'll let you know something after I talk to my aunt Jane.
Pat Liddell Hartnett

The Dust Bowl

I have just finished reading a book called "The Worst Hard Time" that gives the reader a vivid explanation of what happened in the Texas Panhandle from the early 1900's till 1939. My mother, Cornelia Clovene LEAKE, born 1923, lived in Shamrock and graduated from Shamrock High School in 1941. She married Leland Gehrke in 1944 at Pampa AFB and moved to Wisconsin.
I would love to correspond with a woman who would have been my mother's age and lived in Shamrock during the 1930's. Better yet, somebody who knew her?? I can see now I did not ask my mother enough questions about this time in her life. The Leake Family lived on Route 66 not far east of Shamrock. (on the edge of town) If anybody can help with my request I would appreciate it greatly.
Many Thanks,
Susan Munger
Watertown, SD.
