Robert Spence, died 4 Jan 1900 Hempstead

I am looking for details of Robert Spence born 1812 in Yorkshire, England and who arrived in Hempstead in 1867 from Houston where he had lived for two years. During this time in Houston he apparently married a widow Mary Major [her first husband being Isaac Major]. According to an article I read taken from Indian Wars and Pioneers of Texas" by John Henry Brown [pub.1880]Robert worked as a clerk and kept books in a store. After settling in Hempstead he "engaged in merchandising, at which he has since prospered. He is now and has been for many years one of the most substantial citizens of that thrifty inland city. Mr and Mrs Spence have adopted and reared two grandchildren, C. M. and W. S. Close."<br>Robert had been married before and had a daughter who became a Sister of Charity and died in Mobile, Alabama.<br>C.M. and W.S. Close are I assume the grandchildren of Mary and Isaac Major.<br>Robert Spence and his second wife are buried in Hempstead Cemetery and I have photos of their headstones. Mary had died in 1893.<br>Robert had a brother William [a grocer]who according to the same article lived in Hempstead for a while before returning to England sometime in the 1870's.<br>Thank you,<br>Julia

Are you still looking for information about Jared Kirby/Alta Vista Plantation? I have found several newspaper articles using The Texas Portal website. For instance, in the Fort Griffin Echo (Fort Griffin, Tex.), Vol. 2, No. 25, Ed. 1 Saturday, June 26, 1880, there is a note "Col. Jared E. Kirby, formerly of Waller County, died in Colorado last week." If you need the link to the Texas Portal, I'll be glad to send that to you. The Portal also has articles about the Kirby murders.

Yes, but have Farm and Ranch published October 22, 1904, very carefully saved and haven't the faintest idea why. You are right, it does help to have them and to know your family cut them out and felt that they were important enough to save.

I have so many original newspaper clippings from all these events and think it might be easier to read online from the records, but...here is a clipping on the funeral of my grandmother, Cassie Ogg Cameron. It is such a help to have the guests listed. <br><br>Beside the funeral report is a birthday party given for Cassie Ogg. I wish a date had been included, but it was not.<br>I do have photos of Cassie, but since I am still so new at this task, it takes me awhile to get to everything. I am posting them on a family tree on Acrhives.<br><br>

Marie gave me her photo album when I visited her in N.J. in the early 90's. I have just been going through it and scanned a photo of O.R. Mills taken in Navasota, Texas and another of him, Jessie and baby Marie. Have not scanned in a photo which looks like him, but not labeled except with Aug 1, 1947. I started a family tree on archives. Can you access that? Have started scanning in photos and some papers to my computer, but have to figure out just how I add them. I am very slow at this and have been going through boxes with scraps of newspaper from as far back as the 20's with death notices, marriages, articles etc of family.

You may have first husband's given and middle names reversed? Ollie Rowe Mills registered for WWI Draft in Galveston and remarried to Katie LNU.

You do understand that I researched that info?(lol) John Harvey's second marriage to Irene Klentzman "estimated" 1918-1920. That's based on death of first wife Robbie May (20 Apr 1912) and his marital status at time of WWI Draft Registration, single. Irene probably born in Austin County so no telling where they wed!

Believe Nick has info on Cassie Ogg but we didn't dwell on the ancestry of your paternal grandpa, Will. A little help with that, please? I'm not related but please start a family tree? Your aunts were very special at a time when women were not supposed to be liberated! They were highly educated when most of the nation was functionally illiterate. I'm a year younger than you but grew up in a very small town. Many people of my acquaintance "made their mark (X)" on documents.

Yes, I am Kathleen Cameron and my daddy was Howell Donald Cameron who was the last child of Will and Cassie Cameron and was born in 1900. I am just going through things after talking to Taranda Schulz. I have some photos of the family "way back when" and I was born in 1945 so did not know all of them, but have info on several of them because I was always taken to vist everyone. I have memories or Marie mills jenkins, Luther, Glenn, Aunt Tottie and Uncle Bruno, Adice (Dave) I have the family bible as well. I have always been fascinated with Mollie Cameron because that was to be my middle name and because the Mollie's in the family died early, they did not give me a middle name. I have some love letters, &amp; correspondence from the three sisters who were teachers and near the same age in a small chest that I have had. I had not gone through it in more than 20 years and only had it as a pretty keepsake of my family. Definitely this has hooked me and I will need to catch up on how to add photos, and info to a data base so other families can see. Any suggestions are welcomed. Kathy

Kathleen was/is the daughter of Howell Donald Cameron/Floy Lena Sigmon. She wed Terry E. Hatchett, 21 Jun 1969, in Waller. Didn't find any offsprings. Janet Kepner and Joyce Serant were/are sisters. Their maiden: Birkelbach from Harry Birkelbach/Ruby Nagel. Ruby Nagel's father was Walter Charles Nagel, brother of Paul Bruno Nagel (Artie's husband). Thus the Birkelbach sisters were first cousins, one generation removed, to Nancy Glenn (nee: Nagel) Carter. Inference from the obit, "Artie's direct descendants relocated to Georgia"? There are three birth records for James Hayden Kepner/Janet Joy Birkelbach in Harris County. William Boris Serant/Joyce Adele Birkelbach had Michael William.

So far the obituary on Nancy Nagel Carter has been really helpful. Found a Jack Nagel Carter in Cummins, but no number , may not be living. Am I correct , he would be Arties grandson? Kathleen Hatchett thats listed as a cousin in the obit. of Nancy Nagel Carter does still live in Houston so I'm checking that out. I appreciate all of the help!

Not many descendants at all! One of the papers mentioned the funeral of Lucille. The list of obituaries on the Waller site is not complete, so ancestry has helped. And again all of your info has filled in alot of the pieces to this puzzle. Apparently Mollie had no children either. A few Camerons listed in Katy, Tx. , but not sure if related or how.

Mollie and Artie already discussed in detail! Adice Cameron wed Robert Austin Smith (30 Aug 1890 - 8 Jan 1962). Don't think they produced children? She signed his death certificate. Luther Cameron never married! Howell Donald Cameron previously discussed. Not many, direct, descendants? So sad! I was hoping for a family reunion with me as the invited honorary member!

John Harvey Cameron wed #1 Robbie May Gillespie, 19 Sep 1908, in Waller. They had Lucile Cameron (6 Feb 1910 - 16 Mar 1918) who died of Bronchitis in Austin, TX Hospital. Death certificate indicates a hereditary illness and that's "good" info! Her birth certifcate has given name: Kathleen. John Cameron then wed Irene LNU between 1910-1920. They had Evelyn ca. 1925. Guessing she may have been Bonnie Evelyn Cameron who wed Edward Joseph Simons? If so, they had Brian Thomas, Sherri Evelyn, and Christopher Alan. Irene K. Cameron (20 Jul 1890 - 4 Oct 19179) buried in Hempstead.

That may explain why we haven't had a "bite" from the grands and/or greats of William/Cassie? From the top: Jessie married #1 Unknown Mills and they had Marie (1903 Arkansas). Jessie then married #2 Edwin O. Glenn of Idaho on 26 Apr 1914 (Grimes County). They may have divorced shortly thereafter 'cause both resided in seperate households 1930 and 1940. Edwin O. Glenn (19 Sep 1872 - 26 Nov 1962) died in VA Hospital of Houston. No births found for Edwin/Jessie and/or Marie Mills.

Addictive! Guess that's why I logon daily and spend hours searching for people that are not related? I've got enough info on the next thread (Wesley and Rhoda Hisaw Pennington) to introduce two families that have little to no knowledge of each other. The thread's owner occupied with other surnames, thus you have my attention! Artie Cameron Nagel's son Jack Cameron Nagel (25 Jun 1920 - 8 May 1944) died in WWII France. His sister Nancy Glenn Nagel/Leland Stanford Carter had Jack Nagel Carter and Nancy Jill Carter in Harris County. Jack Nagel Carter/Crystal lee Bryan begat: Cassandra Leigh, Bradley Cameron, and Travis Lyle in Harris County.

My apologies if my replies don't make sense , but I have gotten some posts from another member also and get confused as to the subject I'm answering to - lol. Add old age to the fact that I'm fairly new to this genealogy and computers and there you have it. I love all of this though - it could become addicting!

The newspapers I found were on this website <br><a href="http://www.wallercountyhistory.org/" target="_blank">http://www.wallercountyhistory.org/</a> . It takes some time to download, but is definitely worth it. Go to the site , click on newspapers and it will bring up the years they have available , some are partial. I think there is one from 1896, then 1918 and more beginning in the 1920's. It lists Jesse Glenn as a sister to Mollie ( the 1910 census lists her as divorced and last name Mills with a daughter, Marie. Mrs. P.B Nagel ( Tot ) and Mrs. Robert Smith. 3 brothers Howell Cameron of Anahuac, Luther and John Cameron of Hempstead. Sorry it took me a while to answer and again I appreciate all the info. I did find some interesting public trees on here from other members and it looks as if H.D. Cameron; Howell , may have a daughter still living. In looking at the Waller Historical website, the only teacher or school I found was Miss Jimmie Ogg who was a county school superintendent.
