You may want to contact the Palo Alto Battlefield National Historic Park (Mexican War battlefield). The park is located in the Brownsville area. Since Mr. White fought in the War Between Mexico and the United states there may be history in their archives that you do not have. Good luck in your search. This is their website. http://www.nps.gov/paal/index.htm

James Dotson White (1829-1899) Victoria, TX

I am trying to find the cemetery J. D. White is buried in. I can find all sorts of references saying he died in 1899 in Victoria, that his memorial was marked and in the capable hands of the Daughters of the Confederacy until at least 1904, but other than that I can't locate a thing on him. I'm looking to see if his wife Mary B. White ended up buried next to him, as I cannot find her after 1910, though I'm told she was still alive after 1927 and probably until 1930 when her granddaughter met her.
James died in Victoria, was buried in Victoria. He served in Ross Brigade Co H 3rd TX Cavalry from 1861 until the close of the war. He was a prisoner of war at Camp Chase, Ohio. He also served in the Mexican War.
Any help with pinpointing his burial location is greatly appreciated. Thank you very much in advance!

EDGAR Family Cemetery in DeWitt County

EDGAR Family Cemetery
Decoration Day 2013

A Decoration Day at the old EDGAR Family Cemetery is scheduled for Saturday, April 6th. The cemetery is remote, on private land, near the location of the old Edgar family homestead in the Edgar community, between Cuero and Yoakum. The Edgar family’s first-born son, Joseph Smith Edgar, was a veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21,1836 (almost 177 years ago).

The cemetery dates to 1863 when the first burial is believed to have occurred there. The James Edgar family had moved to DeWitt County, TX from Maury County, TN in late 1853 to settle on a third of a league of land (1,476.1 acres) which was a first class headright grant, awarded to their first-born child, Joseph Smith Edgar, for his presence in Texas prior to the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence on 02 Mar 1836. Ten children are known to have been born to James Edgar and his wife, Selah Witherington, between 1818 and 1835. There were nine boys and one girl, and they all came to Texas.

The 17-year-old Joseph came first, in late 1835. He joined the Texas Army, and he was a member of Capt. Robert Calder's Infantry Company K, 1st Regiment, Texas Volunteers at the Battle of San Jacinto. In addition to the headright grant described above, Joseph was also awarded a donation grant of 640 acres for his service at the Battle of San Jacinto and a bounty grant of 320 acres for his service in the Texas Army in general.

Unfortunately, Joseph died before he ever saw any of the land he had earned. He died 09 Jul 1837 at the home of Capt. James Gibson Swisher on the Swisher Farm near the Old Gay Hill community in Washington County. Capt. Swisher was a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and he was from the same area in middle Tennessee as was the Edgar family.

In addition to Edgar family members, numerous other burials occurred in the old EDGAR Family Cemetery of relatives by marriage and of friends and neighbors. Some of the surnames of those known to have been buried in the cemetery include: Abel, Batchelor, Bates, Bell, Bennett, Bouldin, Brown, Carr, Dikes, Donnell, Duke, Dykes, Edgar, Farquhar, Hadley, Hugo (or von Hugo), Jacobs, Ladd, Lee, Luce, Mahler, McAdoo, McCormick, McMeen, Means, Mikes, Mikesh, Murphey, Newsome, Nyegaard, Odom, Pincham, Powers, Pridgen, Rackley, Reader, Robinson, Skeen, Sparkman, Strown, Taylor, Welch, Witherington and Young.

There will be two 3-hr work sessions at the cemetery, one in the morning and one in the afternoon and a visitation period in early afternoon for those unable to attend either work session. A lunch at a local restaurant will include an organizational meeting aimed at forming an EDGAR Family Cemetery Association (“EFCA”) with the objectives of restoring, regularly tending, and preserving the cemetery.

Anyone interested in attending a work session, the visitation at the cemetery and/or the luncheon should contact the EDGAR Family Cemetery Association via email at EFCA1853@gmail.com. More information about the cemetery, the EFCA, and Decoration Day 2013 can be found at the cemetery’s website at http://parkerhannah.com/EdgarFamilyCemetery/Welcome.html.
Find-A-Grave does list his father buried there, Charles Birmingham. I believe Joseph's wife Felipita (spelling?) is also buried in Farrer. Are they on your list?

Thanks in advance,
Juliet Morgan

Does anyone know about some watercolor sketches that Miss Nellie Murphree (1882-1982) had done of old homes in DeWitt county?

They were referenced in an article: "Historical Hobby – Retired Teacher Studies Homes" that was on page 12C of the 15 Oct 1961 edition of the Corpus Christi Caller Times. An excerpt from that article: “Miss Nell recruited a Cuero Jeweler and painter, the late L. A. Carter, to do watercolors of the old homes as they appeared during their opulence.”

Also, does anyone know where Miss Nellie's collection of her research papers may have been left? I am especially interested in old photos that I believe were in that collection.

Dernal, Victoria County, TX

Hello. I am looking for information about the small community of Dernal, located near the intersection of FM 1432 and the Old Bloomington Road, north of Bloomington. It first appears on maps in about 1913 or so, never seems to have been incorporated or a specific ED in the censuses. I have a handful of newspaper articles about gas exploration there during the 1920s and have tracked down a few people (i.e. Dalton B. Spies, W.O. Slaughter, Mateo Garcia, etc) on census records from the first part of 20th century. I assume that the town must have been named for someone named "Dernal", which may be a Latino name, but can't find anyone by that name in any search of records. Does anyone have any information? Thanks - Carole

Hi Linda,
Its me, Judy, who was posting the query. Do you know anything about Uncle Bill's daughter Florence? I can remember as a very small child that my parents visited with her in Galveston. Florence and her husband George did not have children. In her later years she went to live in Victoria with a niece (on her husband side of the family).
In 1998 after we moved here to Smithville we went to Yoakum to visit the cemetery. We had missed Florence's graveside funeral by 10 days. I have been looking for her obit in either the Galveston, Victoria, or Yoakum paper but haven't seem to uncover it yet. I want to get in touch with the Semmellrogge family.
Judy

I am attempting to locate the grave of John W. Bower. His memorial page on Findagrave states he is buried in Bower Cemetery in Refugio County. The only reference I find for a Bower Cemetery on the web is on his memorial page.

I have found a few references that state he was buried near a ferry landing he ran in the 1800s. The ferry ran across the San Antonio river at Carlos Crossing. He owned land on the south side of the river and is supposed to be buried at that location.

On the north side of the river was the Carlos Rancho established by Carlos De La Garza. The De La Garza cemetery is on the north side of the San Antonio River and some of the ranch is still owned by De La Garza's decendants.

Both De La Garza and Bower operated the ferry. I am hoping that the De La Garza cemetery on the north side of the river is near where Bower is supposedly buried on the south side of the river.

I am hoping that somebody who is familiar with the history of this area of Victoria County can help me out.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Birth of Emma Seale/Death of Lucretia Monroe Bailey Seale

I am searching for records of Emma Seale, her mother, Lucretia Monroe Bailey Seale, and her father, Elisha Seale. The latest thing I can find is the 1860 Census. Emma Seale was born 20 Oct 1857, and her brother, Elias F.(F. F.) Seale was born in 1859, in Victoria. Elisha Seale might have died Dec 1861. Lucretia Seale might have died in 1860. But, I have no proof of this. I hope someone has some info.

I can see that I didn't get my message to you. I am Joan Ellen Evans Franks and I live in Austin. My mother was Marjorie Ellen Malone Evans, married to James Douglas Evans. Her father, my grandfather, was Sydney Borden Malone. He married Rissa May Burrows. Sydney Borden Malone's mother and father were Mary Hayes Terry Malone, and she married William (W. B.) Malone. They were my Great Grandmother and father. Mary Hayes Terry was the daughter of Sarah Margaretta Yarrington Terry, and she was married to William Cole Terry, making them my Great, Great grandparents. They are laid to rest in Victoria, Texas as I mentioned. You will find the Malone's basically in Beeville.

Christian Vasterling

I'm looking for the above ancestor who may have been living in the Victoria, Texas area between 1846 and about 1860.
This Christian, born 1842 in Berel, Braunschweig, Niedersachsen Germany immigrated to the US with his parents, Johann Heinrich and Christine Dinia (Pommarin or Prennerina) Vasterling arriving Galveston, December 1845. This much is documented.
For some reason, he is not listed with his family on the 1850 census for Castell, Llano(or Gillespie), Texas, yet some 40 years later, his sister is looking for him with publications in at least one of the San Antonio newspapers. They seem to state he was living in the Victoria area and heard that he may have died 1859-60. I cannot imagine how this child became separated from his family, being 8 years old at the time of the 1850 census unless due to illness he was left with family or friends somewhere along the route from Indianola to Castell. This is a big mystery in our family.
The family he was left with, if indeed that is the case, may have "adopted" him and possibly taken on their name.
I'd like to hear from anyone who might have a clue or a trail to follow.

My great grandmother was Emily Carmen Mora wife of Inocensio Uresti, daughter of Mauricio Mora and Jacova Lazarine. Several trees are unclear which Emily/Carmen married Inocensio, and one of them says it was Elugio Mora's daughter. However, Jesse Oliver says Mauricia Emma Elugio's daughter married Henry Harmes.

Your posts suggest Mauricia Emma Mora married a Polka. Can you clear this up for me? (my dad says his g grandparents were Mauricio Mora (Elugio's brother) and Jacova Lazarine making their daughter my ancestor. There are 4 Emma/Carmel Moras in the 1860 Census of Nacogdoches, and I am in the process of eliminating each one from contention.

Thanks, Michael

The original poster was seeking male descendants of Vol Reed Harris for DNA-testing. Vol Jr. had brothers Jack and Harold on 1930 census so either one and/or their male heirs qualifies. Too, their father John Wesley Harris had brothers and their male descendants are potential candidates. I'm not related.

Your post (question) was from so long ago, you are probably not actively searching for this info. But, thought I'd pass along in case anyone is interested. Vol R Harris Jr. that you asked about was my husband's uncle (married to his aunt Euna Sanders Harris). She is still living (2011). Both Vol's and Euna's parents are buried in Lorenzo Cemetery in Crosby County, Texas. Vol & Euna have one daughter, Memory (@ age 62) one granddaughter Ashley (@age 40). This daughter and granddaughter are their only descendents. None of them are interested in genealogy. Wish I could help more.

Thanks for the info. It jogged loose a memory in the ole brain. As a child of about 4 I remember visiting Florence in Galveston. Vague memories but remember a white two story house not far from the seawall. Later on my Dad mentioned that Florence's husband had died and she moved to Victoria to live with a daughter.
Judy

Thanks for the info on George. I did not know when he died. The census records for the Semmelrogges are very hard to read. The handwriting was terrible. Since the family lived in Galveston and they were German I am assuming they came to Texas via ship from Germany but haven't started looking yet. Vaguely as a very small child I remember visiting Florence in Galveston and she had one of those big old two story houses not far from the seawall. Florence is buried at the City Cemetary in Yoakum in the Criswell family plot. I had gone th Yoakum to take pictures of my great grandparents graves and had missed Florence's funeral by two months.
Thanks for your help. I appreciate every tiny bit of information I get.
Judy
