I have located G.B. (Bingham) GRISSOM in the Bolivar Cemetery in Sanger, Denton County, Texas. His date of birth was 7 Aug 1856.

The 1870 United States Federal Census for Titus County does report a George GRISSOM born about 1856 in North Carolina. The Household Members: Samuel Grissom 45; Martha A Grissom 58; Jane Grissom 17; George Grissom 14; Cassandra Grissom 10; Joseph Grissom 8; Shiasley Grissom 6; and Mary Maddex 10.

Could this George GRISSOM born in 1856 be the G.B. GRISSOM referred to as "Bingham" GRISSOM born in 1856 be the same person?

The author of the original question has probably stopped searching? No additional correspondence has been made under her username in more than seven years. The parentage-question is answered on "The Smith/Newton/Tayloe/Leatherbury Family Tree" owned by llwtmechanic. William Jackson Baker was the son of William Louis Baker and Zilpha/Zelpha Mae Young. The son's death certificate indicates the father was Jacob Baker? However, familysearch.org records indicate he was William Louis Baker who married Zilpha Mae Young about 1850/11854 in McNairy County, TN.

My grandmother was Willie Hester Lock(e). She is living with Davis family of Hill County, Texas in 1900. Her sister married a Davis.

She married Henry Homer Smith in Coriscana, Navrro County, 1905.

Her parents were Missouri Ann Glenn (went by Mattie A. or Mary A.) and William Washington Locke.

Missouri Ann later married James David Reddoch.

Mattie and Henry and two children came back from Mexico in 1913. I think Willie stayed home because she was pregnant with Henry Homer Smith, Jr. who was born in 1913 in Coriscana.

They were in Sweeny, Texas, Brazoria County in 1918 as that is where my Uncle Wilson Bankston Smith was born in 1918.

They are listed on the 1920 census of Bell County, Texas. Some of the names are incorrect. Henry Homer Smith, SR. died I believe Feb. 11 of 1920 as I found a death record at the Bell County Texas Courthouse. The children's orphan records says he died March 11.

It also says he was born Sept. 11, 1871 in MS. but I believe he was born Aug. 10, 1871 in AL.

I found a Henry H. listed on the 1900 census of Franklin County Texas born 1871. He is listed as Henry H. Friday
but the real Henry H. Friday is living with family members two precincts away on the same census.

I believe this Henry H. Friday born 1871 is my grandfather who came with the Smith brothers from Alabama after their dad's death between 1895 and 1900.

I believe my grandfather is buried either in Mt. Calm Cemetery where other relatives are buried on somewhere in Belton or Temple or in between Belton and Temple as they were living halfway between Belton and Temple on the road between those two cities near a little town called Midway.

My grandmother died in the Mexia State Hospital and is buried in an umarked grave in the Mexia City Cemetery.

I don't know about what you found on Family Search. Maybe I accidentally put that in when I saw the hint from Ancestry, not realizing it was the wrong death date.

Anyway, I do so appreciate the research you are doing on my behalf.

Patricia

I found you family tree at ancestry.com. You have that Willie H. Smith died 20 Oct 1951 in Limestone Co. Texas. On Texas death records online at the URL below:

http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html?...

I find that the father's name is given as J. W. Daney and the mother is Susie Middleton. On your site you have that her name was lock.

Also on the 1910 Navarro County and the 1920 Bell County, therre is a Mattie or Lucy Reddock who is listed as mother-in-law.

Needless to say, I am confused. I thought perhaps I could find a connection with the Smith brothers.

Marion K. I know a biological relative who will be so elated to get this info.

I am trying to connect my grandfather, Henry Homer Smith, as one of the brothers of the Smith Brothers who came to East Texas from Alabama.

Marion Zella's dad was one of the brothers.

My Uncle, Wister Allen Smith, lived to be 85 and my mother, Ethel Mae Smith, lived to be 87.

My grandfather died at about age 41 of T.B. in 1920 but there is no death certificate and I do not know where he is buried or where he was actually born as both censuses I found him listed on is contracdictory.

Anyway, thank you again.

Patricia

I have DNA results, but no matches right now. I thought maybe someone had their DNA, but hadn't posted on Ancestry. I would love to hear from anyone.

Thanks

Sue

I was born, Barbara Bilene Bassham on 8/22/1939 in Big Springs, TX to William L. Bassham and Elsie Lorene Grissom.

Grandparents names on mother's side; Josh G. Grissom and Bertha Lee York Grissom. They lived in Colorado City, TX. My grandfather died and I believe was buried there. I'm not sure where my grandmother was buried. All I know about my father's family was that his mother died when he was young, and I remember my grandfather Bassham lived and owned a farm in Colorado City,TX. My grandfather Grissom worked in law enforcement when I was a child, and then, he owned and operated a service station in Colorado City,TX.
Have been searching for years for the father of John Calvin Southerland (b.1868), who through relatives say is William Southerland. William Southerland married Cynthia Mary "Mollie" Clark. She is found in the 1880 Hill County Census as M J Southerland and is listed as a widow, along with five children. I have found a William Southerland listed in Titus County amongst Indigent Families. It shows five were taken in February 1865. My question is 1.Where did they place the children of indigent families and 2. Does anyone have information on William Southerland, we think he was born app in 1845 in Texas. Thank you.

Thank you very much for the terrific information. I appreciate you help!!!

I'm also seeking information on Asbury/Asberry Evans who resided in Titus County from about 1880 until his death after 1910. According to Census records he was born on March Abt 1846 in Georgia. He is buried with his wife Cornelia in the Center Grove Cemetery, Titus. There is no birth or death on his headstone.

Asbury/Asberry is recorded with his family on the 1910 Census. On the 1920 census his wife Cornelia is residing with her son Herman and there is no record of Asbury/Asberry.

I'm specifically seeking birth and death information on Asberry to obtain a death certificate. I would be interested in any available information.

Appreciate your assistance. Thanks

I do not have any information on Blinda Evans or Cyrus Wright. I have not been able to trace all the children of Asberry and Cornelia--- R.L., J.A., Mollie, M.A., Bosse.
I do have some information on Mary E., Sarah Francis, Lou Icie, F.P. (Dock), Herman, and Thadeus Evans.

The Wright's descendants I have are from Walter NMI Wright, born 1877 Titus Texas.

I don't currently have my genealogy on this computer, but I do have a bit about Asberry's brother Warwick and some of his descendants. Do you have any information on the other brother, David (married to Phoebe or Phebe?). There is also another related Evans family in Texas. I believe it was Calvin (married to Mamie Stringer). I have been looking proof of his parents, who we think are David and Phebe (nee Fawcett or Faucett). I will have more time to get in touch with you later in June.

You have provided "good" information to start research. Do you recall names of your father's siblings? Are these familiar: Helen, Carl, Lanier, Mary, Roy, and Neal? I am tracing the family of Leonard Lawrence Bassham (25 May 1880 - 9 Jul 1933). A son William was born 1917/1918. You did not include your father's lifespan but that william would have been age 21 in 1939. Am I "warm"?

With research that we did in Georgia, we found out that the Samuel Walker with date of death in 1897 was not our Samuel Walker. Posted are dates of birth and death based on information on their head stones.

Samuel Walker was born on 04 January 1812 in South Carolina
Sarah Amanda McCollum the daughter of William "Billy" McCollum and Susannah (unk) was born 08 Oct 1819. Samuel Walker and Sarah McCollum were married 06(?) May 1834 in Clark County, Georgia. This is recorded in Bk. B, pg. 217, Clark Co, GA.

They were the parents of six children:
Melissa Octavia born 06 Apr 1837 GA
Josephine born 28 Oct 1841 GA
Mary J. born 19 Feb 1843 GA
John B. born abt. 1845 GA
Henry Clay born 19 Nov 1847 GA
James S. born abt. 1855 SC

1850 they are in Marietta Dist., Cobb Co, GA
1860 Samuel is in Chattooga Co, GA as a boarder in a hotel. We have not been able to find Sarah and the children.
1870 Samuel, Sarah, and the youngest child, James S. are in Chattooga Co, GA.
1880 Samuel & Sarah A. are in Chattooga Co, GA
28 Apr 1885 Samuel dies and is buried in the South Carolina Campground Cemetery in Chattooga Co, GA. The cemetery is located southeast of Summerville.
1900 Sarah Walker is living on Peters St. in Atlanta, GA. She is listed as widowed with one boarder in her home.
11 Jan 1910 at the age of 90 yrs. Sarah dies. She is buried in the Hollywood Cemetery in Atlanta, GA. in a plat belonging to her daughter, Permelia J. Hall whose husband, Jeremiah T. Hall had passed away on 29 Dec 1901. This is not a perpetual care cemetery and is a large but overgrown cemetery.

Obituary from the Atlanta Constitution, dated 12 January, 1910 states:
"Mrs. Sarah Walker, aged 90 years, died at her home at Center Hill at 7 o'clock yesterday morning. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Mary J. York, Mrs. P.J. Hall, and Mrs. M.O. McElfresh, and two sons, H.C. Walker, and J.L. Walker. The funeral will take place at the Center Hill Presbyterian church at 10 o'clock this morning, and the interment will be at Hollywood."

We did find a date of death for John B. Walker as 25 Aug 1908 in Atlanta, so the J. L. Walker listed as a son in the obit is evidently James S. Walker.

Oscar Alexander Brown was my great-grandfather as well. Oscar Harmon was my grandfather.

James Madison Brown (Jim Matt), b. Mar 3, 1835, d. Jun 21, 1919, married Margaret Dorsey, b. Jun 13, 1836 in Georgia (supposedly). She was the 3rd of his four wives. I haven't got much info on her but plan to continue researching her. There was a Dorsey Creek and a Dorsey Cemetary in Titus County.

James Madison Brown's father was Dr. Alexander Brown, b. April 12, 1803, in South Carolina,d. Aug. 26, 1875 in Titus County, his mother was Sarah H. Marshall, b. Nov. 27, 1802 in South Carolina, d. Dec. 10, 1889 in Titus County.

Alexander Brown's father was John Brown, b. 1784 in Charleston or Ireland (?), his mother was Anna Lahney Anderson, b. 1779 in Virginia. I got that info from another cousin who has more info on the family than I ever thought possible. I have been unable to go back any further. Check out website on Pettis County Pioneers.
