I'm conducting a study on the early WALKER FAMILIES coming into Titus County - from 1846 to 1860, attempting to identify all these families by using the tax records, cenus, marriage and cemetery records. Also pooling the records of all WALKER RESEARCHERS in the Upshur-Titus-Hopkins County area. Wish to establish kinship to one SYLVANUS WALKER, born SC 1803, Laurens Co. Greenville District, then to Georgia - DeKalb Co.-Hall Co.-Gwinnett Co. area in the 1830s, then to Randolph Co. AL from at least 1836 to 1846, then to Texas - Upshur-Titus-Hopkins Co. area, ALWAYS seeking new land opportunities in newly formed counties.

PLEASE JOIN ME IN THIS STUDY to identify all these WALKER men and their families, seeking land and new opportunities - just after the end of the Republic of Texas 1836-1845, and settling in the newly formed 31 counties of East and Northeast Texas counties.

Diana, thank you for your reply. Titus county had two different sets of Walkers - and I do not recognize any of your names. I will keep them on file though and if I find anything or others researching your group, I will be sure to let you know.
Helping each other is what this is all about - and helps to unravel the puzzles and break down the "brick walls" much faster. Thanks again. Janice Brown

I have an Andrew Walker, b. abt 1805 in Fairfield District, SC. Andrew migrated to Tipton Co, TN in about 1830, with other families in Fairfield District, SC whose names appear in the 1850 census for Tipton County. The census record indicated that he married a woman named Martha in the preceeding year (1849). The fact that he named one of his daughters Martha may possibly indicate the name of his first wife but this is strictly a supposition.

Andrew's name fails to occur in Tipton Co after the 1850 census. His name next occurs in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census for Titus Co., TX. In 1880 he gave his birthplace as SC and his age as 77. He was living in the household of his daughter Polina and her second husband, William Rounsavall.

On September 2,1859, Martha Walker, presumably Andrew's second wife, obtained a patent on 238 acres of government land in Titus Co, TX that was originally granted to Solomon V. Turner. (File No. 518 GLO)

Don't know if my Walker will fit into your study or not but thought I would post this so that someone else could possibly use this information.

I'm searching for information on Franklin M Walker, Corpl Co A 11th Texas Cav CSA. He is buried in Bivens (Old Monticello) Cemetery, Titus Co., Tx. There is no birth or death date listed on his tombstone. If any of you know his parents and birth, death dates please reply to this email. I'm interested in placing a small marker with the additional information at base of the military marker. Please reply if you have any idea what family Franklin is connected to. Thanks ljo

With research that we did in Georgia, we found out that the Samuel Walker with date of death in 1897 was not our Samuel Walker. Posted are dates of birth and death based on information on their head stones.

Samuel Walker was born on 04 January 1812 in South Carolina
Sarah Amanda McCollum the daughter of William "Billy" McCollum and Susannah (unk) was born 08 Oct 1819. Samuel Walker and Sarah McCollum were married 06(?) May 1834 in Clark County, Georgia. This is recorded in Bk. B, pg. 217, Clark Co, GA.

They were the parents of six children:
Melissa Octavia born 06 Apr 1837 GA
Josephine born 28 Oct 1841 GA
Mary J. born 19 Feb 1843 GA
John B. born abt. 1845 GA
Henry Clay born 19 Nov 1847 GA
James S. born abt. 1855 SC

1850 they are in Marietta Dist., Cobb Co, GA
1860 Samuel is in Chattooga Co, GA as a boarder in a hotel. We have not been able to find Sarah and the children.
1870 Samuel, Sarah, and the youngest child, James S. are in Chattooga Co, GA.
1880 Samuel & Sarah A. are in Chattooga Co, GA
28 Apr 1885 Samuel dies and is buried in the South Carolina Campground Cemetery in Chattooga Co, GA. The cemetery is located southeast of Summerville.
1900 Sarah Walker is living on Peters St. in Atlanta, GA. She is listed as widowed with one boarder in her home.
11 Jan 1910 at the age of 90 yrs. Sarah dies. She is buried in the Hollywood Cemetery in Atlanta, GA. in a plat belonging to her daughter, Permelia J. Hall whose husband, Jeremiah T. Hall had passed away on 29 Dec 1901. This is not a perpetual care cemetery and is a large but overgrown cemetery.

Obituary from the Atlanta Constitution, dated 12 January, 1910 states:
"Mrs. Sarah Walker, aged 90 years, died at her home at Center Hill at 7 o'clock yesterday morning. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Mary J. York, Mrs. P.J. Hall, and Mrs. M.O. McElfresh, and two sons, H.C. Walker, and J.L. Walker. The funeral will take place at the Center Hill Presbyterian church at 10 o'clock this morning, and the interment will be at Hollywood."

We did find a date of death for John B. Walker as 25 Aug 1908 in Atlanta, so the J. L. Walker listed as a son in the obit is evidently James S. Walker.
