I spent a couple of hours last Friday at The Shelby County Historical Museum and an hour at the County Clerk's office. I was searching for any records pertaining to Dr. Mallaleel Johnson, and Mary Onacata Magalona Sanford, such as a marriage certificate, info about Mallaleel's death, anything that might confirm her unusual name, etc. Unfortunately, the courthouse in Center, Tx, burned in the 1880's, and those records do not exist. So unless there are some private papers that turn up, I don't see ever getting any more information than we already have.

I have both of those items. I actually put the grave on FindaGrave. She is my aunt and although I have most of my family's papers there was not an obit for her and thought maybe the library in Center might have archives of the newspaper from that time frame. Thanks for responding though.

I have a listing for him in my tree http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/41016346/person/19599813322

He died in Center, Shelby, TX on 25 Apr 1904. This information was in some family notes from my grandmother. Her story was she was born in the back room and her father died in the front room. In reality it was about a couple of days apart.

I am looking for proof of death and where he is buried. Any help is appreciated.

Bob

Jane Catherine Branch Largent - death date in Shelby county, Texas

I had a suggestion to look in the State Archives in Austin and find when her widows pension stopped to help determine date of death. So if I get an approximate date of death from that, what local Shelby county newspaper can I search for an obit or death notice?

Here is what I know about Jane Catherine Branch.

Born 1842 in GA to John and Elizabeth Branch. Sister is Martha Ann Branch Sample of Shelby County. They are both buried in Sample Cemetery but Jane's marker has no dates.

Jane is on the 1850 Escambia county, Florida census and the 1860 Sabine Parish, La census. Marries Walter D Largent 31 Oct 1860 in Sabine Parish and they are both on the 1870 Sabine census with children. Walter is a Civil War Vet and dies in 1875. Jane is later found on the 1880 and 1900 Leon, Texas census. Jane then moves to Shelby county sometime after 1900 and lives with sister Martha Sample. Jane applies for a civil war widow pension in sep 1903 and is approved sep 1904. Lastly, Janes' undated headstone is in Sample Cemetery next to her sister Martha. Jane is not found on any census record in 1910 and is presumed death ca 1903 - 1910.

No record of her death is found in the Texas death records online at familysearch.org. From her pension application, Jane had no wealth or property that might show up on deed or probate records and all her children were grown.

So what newspaper can I search or any other ideas on searching.

Thank you.

Hugh

From the poster's own family tree:

Hershell O Hudson, born 22 Nov 1925
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/45833746/person/6431743885
Sources for birth: The 1940 US Census, and the Social Security Death Index. Neither qualifies for a source of a birth.

I'm assuming Henry is Henry James Hudson, Hershell's father:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/45833746/person/6432444908
Father Henry is shown in the family tree as being in Timpson, Shelby Co, but not sourced. I'm "assuming" the source would be the birth info on Hershell, which if from above, is not a source of birth.
--Another family tree shows this person as James Henry Hudson.

I would NEVER say they don't exist. There may be records that are not in the hands of the Texas State government or County government. There are newspapers, church records, bible records, etc. There are records that might find them in the town in 1925, property records, tax records, etc.

I didn't see any record that he had served in the military during WWII. His records (if not burned in the 1973 fire) may have birth information.

Hershell's Social Security Number was 446-16-6498. You can obtain a copy of his application for that SSN via the Social Security Administration:
http://www.socialsecurity.gov/online/ssa-711.pdf
BUT, that information would only show the information that HE knew when he applied.

They don't exist! Texas mandated vital records effective 1903. Compliance with the law lagged for several decades thereafter. I'm proof of that, born 1946 and birth filed as "delayed" in 1948. The lifespans on your family tree are probably as accurate as you'll find?

Hi Tammy,
I was working on find-a-grave and wanted to link Sarah Elizabeth Wagstaff to James Allen Tindol, but could not locate her. Did she remarry? Do you know where she is buried?
Also, James Allen Tindol was first married to Leona Choate and they had a daughter, Elva May Tindol who married Benjamin Hilliard Sapp, Jr. I found someone whom may be her in the SSDI who died in Houston in 1977, which would mean that she and BH Sapp divorced because he later married someone named Ruth. Do you know where Elva Mae is buried? Thanks! (a Sapp relation)

Simeon and Edith Walker's daughter Sarah Pearl Walker (1804 - 1894) married John D. Merchant (1800 - 1876) on 31 Mar 1821 in Lawrence, Tennessee - They are my GGG Grandparents. 1822-1832 they lived in Franklin, Alabama where they had their first children. In 1832 the family moved to Nacogdoches, Texas (Mexican Territory). By 1860, Sarah and John Merchant had moved to Pilot Point, Denton County, Texas. Sarah Pearl Walker Merchant is buried in Abilene, Texas, where finally she lived with her son Claiborne Walker Merchant. Let me know if I can help with this line.

Massey Family of Shelby County, Texas (William Eugene Massey)

Hi,

My family is from Center, TX and I am trying to document our family history.

Unfortunately the farthest I can get back on my father's side is to my great great grandfather, William Eugene Massey. He was born in Louisana in 1872 but moved to East Texas at some point before 1900, where he had four children. One of those was a son, my great grandfather named Johnnie T. Massey. Johnnie T was the husband of Lola Ruth Massey(Hunter) and father of Dorris Massey(Parker), Johnnie Ruth Massey(Brown), and Cecil Edgar Massey.

I do not know and cannot seem to be able to find out who William Eugene Massey's parents are. Does anyone have any idea how I might be able to find out? I know he was born on 18 Sept 1872 and died on 25 Dec, 1961 in Center, Texas. He married Frances "Fannie" Virginia Thomas of Natchitoches, Louisiana on 18 Nov 1897. The marriage occurred in Shelby County, Texas.

Thanks for the help.

Her name was Era and she married Claude Farrington Bush and had two sons, James Martin and Claude F. Bush Jr. I have so many stories that my Great Grandma Era used to tell me about her childhood and when Martin Middleton was Sheriff in Shelby County, Texas. Martin moved to Galena Park after retiring as sheriff and got involved in the politics that started the Houston Ship Channel.

Greetings,

I seek the obituary of Julia A. Biggar (Jan. 6, 1840-Mar. 25, 1917). She is buried in the Biggers Cemetery in Shelby County. I am not sure if this is the same Julia Biggar I am seeking, and I am hoping an obituary exists so I can determine that one way or the other.

Any assistance is welcome. Thank you!

Chris Brennan
I am a great-grandson of Benjamin Milam Johnson (1838-1915), a younger brother to Ellenor Lockert Johnson (1833-1874), wife of (Dr) Jacob Smith (1834-1881), of Shelby County, TX. Ellen's father, Alvey E. Johnson (1803-1862) was from Fayetteville, Lincoln County, TN. In 1829 he married Rachel Denicy Lockert (1807-1884), daughter of James and Ellenor Lockert of Saline County, Arkansas, and the couple settled near Greenville in Clark County, Arkansas Territory, where he served as deputy sheriff, 1826-30. In early September 1830 he resigned and was "gone to Texas" as it appears in the county circuit court records. At the same time as his brother-in-law William S. Lockert (1817-1847) represented Saline County in the Arkansas Assembly, Alvey R. Johnson (a Texas Ranger) was elected from Shelby County to the House of Representatives of the Third Congress of the Republic of Texas, 1838-39.

Berlene,

No, I don't have much else to add. But did wantt to note that another Choate researcher sent me a message referring me to a digitized image of a letter issued by Augustus Hotchkiss, a primary judge in San Augustine, Texas, dated 20 April 1835 and concerned a appointment of guardianship to Bailey Anderson Jr and Sam McFadden of the four minor heirs of the deceased Christopher "Kit" Choate (or Shoat), namely "Wade Hampton aged about eight years, Nancy aged about six years, Eliza aged about four years, Stokely aged about two years".

http://digital.sfasu.edu/cdm/singleitem/collection/Millards/...

Based on this information, I suspect that the Louisa Choate (age 18 in 1850 Census in household of Moses L. Choate in Polk County, TX) served as the heir to Chistopher Choate in 1851 is likely the above "Eliza" or perhaps her full name was possibly Eliza Louisa Choate? Below is the proceedings on the partitioning of the estate.

“M. [Moses] L. Choat, guardian, vs A. R. Johnson, guardian: And now comes the pleas as guardian of Louisa Choat praying for a partition & distribution of the Estate of Christopher Choat, Elizabeth Bradley and Wade H. Choat and A.R. Johnson as guardian of the other minor heirs and distributes of said estates to wit: M.W. Bradley, Melinda H., Amanda F, and Malvena D. Bradley, and having made no abjection to a partition and distribution of the same, and after a hearing in said cause, it is ordered adjudged and decreed that the said Louisa is entitled to the one half of said estates, and the respective guardians having agreed to a division accordingly, And it is further appearing from exhibits made at the term of this court by A R Johnson the administrator of said estates that the same is in a Situation to be divided and distributed. It is further ordered and decreed that Richard Yarborough, William Nail, James West, Andrew Nail and Redden Sesiums be and hereby are appointed commissioners to divide all the effects, money, and property of said estates in two equal portions. One of which to be set apart for the said Louisa and the other half to the minor children of John & Elizabeth Bradley and that they make return of the division of the cattle on the 15 day of April & to this court on or before the April Term of this court, 1851.

It is further ordered that said Johnson administrator as aforesaid presents and show said cattle etc., to the said commissioners on said day, reserving a sufficient amount to pay expences of administration & the debts of the estates. It is further ordered that the said Johnson exhibit to said commissioners all the other effects, money of said estates at his house on the 9th day of January 1851 & that they on said day make partition & distribution between Louisa Choat and the minor heirs of John Bradley giving her one half & said minors the other half and return by the next term of this court.

The State of Texas}
County of Shelby} I, W.E. Given under my hand and official seal, this May 22 AD 1851. W.E. Roberts CCCSC”

Additionally, according to a letter addressed to Alvey R. Johnson, dated at Camp Madena, near San Antonio, August 11, 1849 from Nelson D. Walling, some two months before the death of Wade H. Choate in October 1849, reports:

A.R. Johnson, Esqr.
Dr. Sir— We start tomorrow morning for Mexico, much against our will. We all enjoy tolerable good health. Stokely and Wade are in our company, and in my mess. I do not know when I will be home— I wish you to assist the boys in getting out their crop, and do the best you can with it for them. We have not drawn any money yet, and are not likely to— but should we draw, I will try and send some home to you by the first safe chance. I had bad luck with my horse, but in the rounds I have not loss much. I have made my enquiry respecting the stud horse, and think you had better keep him at home, as there is no money in the country, nor wont be, until the army is discharged. Sam Bonds sends his stud home today, for the want of sale. Give my respects to your family and all my friends. And give my respects also to my family. I would write to you again, but I know not where I will be, or how to send you a letter. Believe me your friend &c
N.D. Walling”

Just to understand the importance of who Nelson D. Walling was, two years earlier, Walling (then age 44) had enlisted in Colonel Jack Coffee Hayes' Second Regiment of Texas Rangers as a private and was mustered on June 21, 1847 into Captain Isaac Furguson’s company, who had took over after Captain Alfred M. Truitt was promoted to the rank of Major on the regimental staff. Also on muster roll was Ephraim M. Daggett, as First Lieutenant (age 38), and also Stoakly B. Choate, as 2nd Bugler (age 18). Daggett's brother Charles was 1st Bugler. Although Wade H. Choate is not listed on the company muster roll of June 1847, he was reported as 'absent on detached duty since May 28, 1847; returned to Co. August 29, 1847; Mustered out near Veracruz, Mexico May 1, 1848. 1 horse lost at sea from Brazos Santiago to Veracruz; commutation for clothing due. I have a receipt issued to him on May 18, 1848 from a New Orleans clothier where he went on a buying spree. The last notice I have of Wade prior to his death was a reciept: “Rec’d of Wade H. Choate twenty one Dollars in full for advertising the Administrator’s Notices of the Estates of Elizabeth and Jno Bradley this the 25th Sept 1849 (signature of) Wm. Harmon”

The very next item was the following notice:

State of Texas}
County of Shelby}
Whereas it has Been Shown to the Satisfaction of the undersigned Chief Justice that Wade H Choate has departed this life who was administrator of the Estate of John Bradley, Christopher Choate & Elizabeth Bradley, deceased, and as there is business that requires immediate attention it [is] therefore ordered that A R Johnson be appointed administrator with [---ed] & power To take charge of all the Effects belong[ing] to the above named person until there can be a legal administrator appointed and also all the Effects of the above Wade H Choate of aforesaid as he has complyed with the law Regulators insuch cases. Given under my hand and seal of office at Shelbyville this 6th of Nov 1849, Robert Turner, Chief Justice SC, attest G.W. Scott, CCCSC”
Ludlow Paul Agnew and Samantha Pruitt (Pruett) Agnew were my great grandparents. They had 11 children, the youngest being my grandfather, Clifton Eugene Agnew (1897-1971). After the death of Samantha P. Agnew, L. P. Agnew married Frances Griffin Lansford. They had five children.

Samantha Pruitt (Pruett) had five given names; therefore leading to some confusion regarding her name. Why she was given five names I do not know.

Both L.P. Agnew and Samantha Pruitt Agnew are buried in Ramah Cemetery in Shelby County, Texas.

Ludlow Paul Agnew's mother, Susan Nix Agnew is also buried in Ramah cemetery. His father, Elijah Agnew, is buried in the confederate cemetery at Camp Chase, Ohio.

sgarrett@carthageisd.org

I made a mistake about Robert and Wade Hampton Choate, named as grandsons of Sarah McKenzie Choate in 1850...it was in 1880.

I appreciate the time you took to respond but my interest is with the Choate line. Since you don't have more useful information regarding the Choate families, do you perhaps have any contact that would know more about this line that I might contact?

Thanks for your time,

Berlene Jacques

Some of the information was verified with on-line sources, such as the fact that John M. Bradley served as sheriff of Shelby County (1838-41), verified by receipts held in the Texas State Archives. Similar receipts for the payment of A.R. Johnson as a member of the House of Representatives from Shelby County was found among the claims against the Republic of Texas. But that was not discovered until 2006. Elizabeth Choate, an immigrant of the year 1821 was found in the clerk returns only recently made available on-line by the Texas General Land Office. But in having Alvey R. Johnson's personal papers, discovered in his son's trunk in 1989, including the Bradley estate papers, has been a huge advantage considering the many biographical sketches on John M. Bradley is really a composite of some five men bearing the same name including one who never lived in Texas. Complicating matters further was the fact that two men by the same name each settled in Shelby County, though with the documents that I have now assembled, the former Shelby County sheriff and tax accessor believed by many to have been murdered in 1844 was still living in May 1848 when Middleton Tate Johnson sent his 12 year old son Thomas to hand-carry a note to Bradley anent an offer to buy 60 head of cattle. Of any person then living in Texas, Texas Ranger Captain M.T. Johnson (a former Regulator leader) would most certainly have known whether this John M. Bradley was killed in 1844 and would not have written a letter to a dead man! This John M. Bradley died in March 1849, based on a sworn affidavit by his personal physician Dr. James S. Kyle of Panola County, one of the very documents forming the probate papers of the Bradley Estate.

1850 Census? And Redmon dead? Thought he died about 1861? The Wade Hampton Choate (1826-1849) that I am dealing with had served with John Coffee Hayes' Second Regimnt of Texas Rangers during the Mexican War, 1847-48 so was an older man than the one you are seeking. The A. R. Johnson noted below refers to Alvey R. Johnson (1803-1862) who was appointed by the probate court below 'non bonis' adminstrator on the estates of the decedents Christopher Choate, Elizabeth Choate alias Bradley, and John M. Bradley in addition to Wade Hampton Choate below. Elizabeth Choate, an immigrant of the year 1821 was in 1838 appointed as the administrator on the estate of the deceased Christopher Choate but did not collect very much on closing the decedent's estate. In 1840 she married John M. Bradley, then sheriff of Shelby County by whom they had four children, who were orphaned in March 1849. As is noted below, at the time of his death, Wade was the administrator on the descedent's estates and so the court had to appoint someone else to oversee the estates. Johnson had represented Shelby County in the Third Congress of the Republic of Texas and was an attorney. In representing another minor heir, Louisa Choate, was the younger brother of Christopher Choate, a William Moses Livington Choate of Polk County, Texas. But I would suspect that the Wade Hampton Choate you are seeking was named for the above gentleman.

Item 1:

State of Texas}
County of Shelby}
Scott, CCCSC

Item 2:

Now at this day comes A R Johnson by Petition praying for letters of administration on the Estate of Wade Choat, deceased. It is therefore ordered by the Court that A R Johnson be & he is hereby appointed administrator of said Estate he complying with the Law.

The State of Texas}
County of Shelby} I, W.E. Roberts, Clerk of the County Court in & for the said County, do certify that the above and foregoing is a true copy of an order made in Probate Court for said county, on the 26th day of November AD 1849.
Given under my hand and seal of said Court at Office, on this 22nd day of May AD 1851, W.E. Roberts CCCSC.
.Hope you will see this but I am interested in finding out exactly who Wade Hampton Choate is. In 1850, Shelby County, Texas in the home of Sarah MCKenzie Choate, widow of Redmond Choate, are Robert age 11 and Wade Hampton age 9 Choate. They are listed as grandsons of Sarah Choate. Do you know who these young children belong to?
