I am a History Major at SFA. I am doing a research report on Henry Watson(Panola County). The pension application for Henry L. Watson(Rusk County) was filed with the Civil War letters of the other Henry Watson. You said before that you had war information on Henry L. Watson. If you dont mind please email me some of the information. Since the two Henrys were brought up in the course of my research I plan on mentioning both of them in my report. I would love to have some more concrete info on Henry L. Watson. Thank You so much...Please email me at heavenly4364@yahoo.com

Re: ROBERTS/HENSON

Hello cousin?

A very basic outline of what I can reasonably prove:

My 4g-grandparents William Roberts and Ann Vandergriff married in 1784 Wilkes Co, NC. Both born in the Raleigh area and may have known each other as children. Followed her family west through eastern Tennessee. No other TN Roberts family clearly connected, though a Reuben Roberts and a few others are suspect.

In 1832, William Roberts filed his Revolutionary War pension application (#S17054) while living in Hamilton Co, TN near what is now Chattanooga. In 1836, William's soon Jacob purchased land on Walden's Ridge, soon followed by Ninion Roberts who Jacob was a witness.

Look at the 1840 census for District 2, Hamilton Co, TN. The first "H" Roberts is actually Ninion Roberts, who I am 99% sure is a son of William and Ann. In 1847, Ninion and his son Emerson bought land for a mill in the same area. If you look at a current map just outside Chattanooga in the Falling Water area is a Roberts Mill Road, and hidden on the hill above foundation for the mill is the Roberts Cemetery.

The first William Roberts are my 3g-grandparents William A. Roberts/Robbirds and Jane Bunch. Their oldest child is my 2g-grandfather William Mattison Roberts/Robbirds/Robirds.

Next is Jacob Roberts. Listed next to him is David Bunch. David is Jane's older brother, and his first wife was Jacob Roberts' daughter Lucy. Next to David Bunch is a Joseph Roberts.

The "C" and second William Roberts are Jacob's sons Caswell and William G. And of course, they are surrounded by their Vandergriff relatives. In 1842, the elder William with sons William M. and Jacob, plus their extended families (except two of Jacob's married daughters) moved to SW Missouri. Ninion and his line stayed in the area.

At this point I do not know who Joseph Roberts is, but I do have information that makes him a suspect. Referring to William Roberts' pension application shows it was witnessed by Gilbert Vandergriff (his brother in law) and John Howeth. The Howeth family had been neighbors of the Roberts and Vandergriffs much earlier in Grainger Co, TN. The Howeths moved to Hamilton Co. much earlier some apparently by 1817 and are listed in the 1830 and 1840 census. The 1846 Voter List for the Republic of Texas shows David Bunch, various Howeths and your Joseph Roberts all in Rusk County. John Howeth and David Bunch are found in Grayson Co, TX by 1852, though John and his brother Thomas with much of their family soon moved just west to Gainesville in Cooke Co. Without a doubt, David Bunch is somehow related to the Howeths perhaps as close as a brother-in-law or half-brother.

Various records support that everyone knew each other in Rusk Co. and had land in the same corner of the county. The Birdwell family was apparently also out of Hamilton Co, TN, and maybe even earlier out of Grainger Co. There was an issue where George Birdwell was the exector of Robert Bell's estate, but after George died William Howeth petitioned the court to be named as executor but Matthew Birdwell protested. William Howeth had married a Bell, so Robert Bell was apparently his father-in-law.

I have looked at others research on Joseph Roberts, and think it is unusual that he just shows up in Texas and no one seems to say from where. If it is the same Joseph Roberts as 1840 Hamilton Co, then he should have some older children from an earlier marriage that is never mentioned. David Bunch did later sell some of his land in Grayson Co. to a Roberts, but I can't get anywhere with that.

I won't claim for sure that Joseph Roberts is related to my Roberts, but I think the Bunch/Howeth connection suggests the clear possibility due to various "coincidences". Do you have a male Roberts cousin that might be willing to particiapte in the Roberts Y-DNA project. There is another Roberts family not related by blood long associated with the Bunch family that was in the same area of Tennessee, so there is a chance that the 1840 Joseph Roberts is connected to them through David Bunch.

Any ideas?

Dan

I m still researching this. Martha Jane Shoffit (sp) was my 4th Great grandma. From what I can tell, her maiden name was Shoffit (sp?) her first husband was Joseph Davis the brother or William who was killed. I can't find fact to back this up, just some stories and other peoples info.
she had two children with Joseph- Alaphare and Lorenzo Dow Davis, although Allaphare goes by Shoffitt on her death cert. her death cert listed Joseph Davis and her father. so I am thinking her full name was Alaphair Shoffit Davis. All these spellings are uncertain of Alephare, alaphair, alla phare, and shoffit, shoffett, shuffet??? that is what makes this so hard.
Feel free to look at my tree.
I will keep posting as i find more info.
Hi. My name is Hattie Wraggs Montague. My daughters and I are trying to find as many family members as possible. We've found out that our family name is from England and many of my ancestors were slaves of the white families. I am on facebook and I have seen the name Wraggs, Raggs, Ragg, and Wragges...and I think we are the decendants of the original Wraggs that came from England...at least, we're the descendants of the slaves who acquired the name of their masters. Please write back if you can. This is truly interesting to me and my family. Thanks!

Hattie Wraggs Montague

Looking for info on Samuel Wilson born 1860 and have found him in Rusk and Panola Counties so far. The 1900 census shows his parents from Georgia. Hopefully is is related to the Georgia Wilson's mentioned in this thread. I found a Sam living with a John and Lucenith in Henderson in 1870. Do any of these names ring a bell???

Gary, I see this was posted back in 2000 but I just found it because I am researchng the same GG-grandparents. Andrew Jackson Baker and Amanda Melinda McGuffy were my GG-grandparents as well, my mama is Frances S Baker Wilcox her daddy was Willie Jackson Baker and his daddy was Andrew Jackson "Jack" Baker who married Margaret Josephine Woosley But that is all I know. This is where I am stuck, I do not know A.J.'s parents or his birth or Amanda's family info. If you have any info about this line now please let me know and we could share info if you don't mind. I will share what I have if you need any of it. Oh yeah what did you mean by you thought they had a sleeping problem?
I found it odd that Sarah Eacott was identified as being married and a widow in the 1880 census. Hopefully there are other newspaper accounts on a trial for the incident involving Thomas Eacott which could have been somewhere
other than Brown county. I personally believe Thomas K was his daughter so he may have been acquitted, returned home and died 1878 - 1880.

I have a great aunt named Tommie, after her father Thomas, who died before she was born in 1893.

Cora Blanche Eacott Madison is buried in Brown County, July of 1913 but cemetery was not named. She was already widowed by the time the 1900 census was taken and am surprised a death record was filed considering the
year. I also now find that she married Chas. G.
Sorry to ask about the Eacott's in this thread. I appreciate the answer though. This clears up some of my questions. What happened to Thomas is still a mystery to me. If he had the altercation as written in the newspaper clipping then Thomas 'K' was born a year after this. It was always said that Thomas Armstrong had died with Custer @ Little Big Horn in Company K. I have the entire roster book and know that's not right now. Thomas K was supposedly named for this. T. A. Is not in the 1880 census and the Brown County courthouse burned in 1880 with all records lost. I will try for newspaper clippings, etc. Thank You for your answer it link's up several items and surnames for me.

Couple of questions about Thomas A. Eacott & Sallie Sandlin.
I've looked through the online records of Hillcrest cemetery in Temple and I don't see either one of them listed. I live in Killeen so I can run over and look if its there.. I would like to narrow it down before I went though.
My great grandmother was Thomas K Eacott. Who was born in Brownwood I think in Jan 1877 or 1878. It says her mother was Mary Beth Sandlin? The 1880 Brownwood census Sarah Eacott as mother.
I found a newspaper article in the Galveston News from Feb. 4th of 1876 showing Thomas Eacott from Brownwood killing a man in self defense. he then turned himself into authorities. I have'nt found out anymore than this.
It looks like he was in the Missouri 2nd Calvary during the Civil War

Death certificates for children born to Conrad Otto Brandes/Mary Angeline Charlton: Louisa Augusta Brandis Carson (4 Nov 1872 - 14 Feb 1967), Catherine Marie Murphy (27 Dec 1865 - 10 Dec 1942), Emma Roapke (6 Mar 1868 - 27 Feb 1960), George Brandes (10 Feb 1884 - 21 Dec 1961), Margaret Florence Sanders (4 Jan 1878 - 19 Sep 1965), and James W. Brandes 1875 - 29 Aug 1961 Multnomah, OR). There is a death record for a Henry Brandes (28 Jan 1927) in Harris County. No document is attached so unable to validate if he was part of this family? DYK? You can find others researching this family. After accessing a census image, look on the right border for >>. Click the characters and a small window will open to reveals others who haved saved the image to family trees.

Again, employment with the railroad resulted in frequent travel. This complicates research. Otto Brandes wed Mary Angeline Charlton, 28 Oct 1862 in Phelps, MO. As of 1900 Jefferson-Beaumont-District 0033-Image 60, Angaline Brandis had given birth to 10 and eight were still living. Finding any of the kids, with parents, prior to that date is challenging! George Brandis was with his mom in 1900. Brother, Henry, lived nearby and found on same image. James Brandus found 1900 Orange-Orange Ward 2-District 0058-Image 35. In 1910 Harris-Houston Ward 5-0057-Image 9, James Brandes sheltered his pop (Otto) and brother (George). Later, James relocated to Oregon where he subsequently expired.

The marriage found https://familysearch.org/ Keep me "in check"! I'm retired and spend hours everday doing lookups. I'm sorry! Lookup Fred W. McCormick (Jul 1894 - 6 Dec 1964) death on familysearch. His wife Virmie Hamshire and there's a birth record for daughter Ollie Grace in Jefferson County. John McCormick (8 Dec 1844 - 5 Mar 1913) died in Port Arthur. Maggie Luscher, daughter, was the informant. Notice the spelling of Maggie's married surname. Emelia McCormick (27 Oct 1861 - 20 Feb 1911) died in Jefferson County. Both parents died prior to 1920 which explains the reason their chilren were in the same household. Maggie McCormick first married Joseph Ripca/Ripka ca. 1907. They're found 1910 Ellis-Ennis Ward 4-0136-Image 12. Next, she wed Charles H. Luscher and they're found 1920 Jefferson-Beaumont Ward 1-District 88-Image 14 with sons from her first marriage. Then, 1930 Jefferson-Beaumont-District 36-Image 18. James and Floyd McCormick were part of the 1930-household. What is your lineage to this family?

Sorry, I work during the week and do genealogy when I have time, which may not the same day as when I get the message. In fact, I worked on what you sent last night and got them in the 1870 and 1880 censuses. However, I searched Mc Cormick, mccormick, mc cormack, mccormack and couldn't find the marriage between John and Amelia (Emilie). Any idea where to look?

Sorry! Genealogy communicated via private email is not desired. Email does not expose info to public scrutiny and/or dispute. I'd rather be "corrected" than transmit false data. Surnames beginning "Mc" should be researched two ways: with a space following "Mc" and without the space. The best census to find them is 1900 Jefferson-Precinct 4-District 0031-Image 8. Look for John "McCormack" age 54 and born in PA, pop in Ireland, and mom in Scotland. His wife Amelia age 37 and born in Missouri, father in Germany, and mother in Missouri. She had given birth to nine and all were still living in 1900? Their children: Rosey(20), Maggie(18), Elizabeth(13), James(10), Wesley(8), Freddie(6), Fay(3), and May(2). John R. McCormick wed Emilie Brandes, 1 Mar 1879, in Grayson County. You'll find them 1880 Grayson-Bells-009-Image 4 but search with a space following "Mc". Don't know his location in 1900 but the missing child was John Otto McCormick. He was born 6 Apr 1884 per WWI Draft Card in Jefferson County. His death certificate filed as Jno O. McCormick (2 Oct 1886 - 11 Mar 1931) witnessed by Mrs Effie Thomas who must have been his daughter? His draft card names Effie Rosalie McCormick (child) as next-of-kin. Strange, 'cause she was born 1911 and was under age 10 at draft registration. Anyway, find death certificates: Rosa M. Hollaway (12 Jul 1880 - 17 Apr 1973), Lola Milford (4 Sep 1895 - 17 Jul 1978), James Henry McCormick (28 Dec 1889 - 18 May 1965), and Maggie McCormick Lucher (7 Oct 1882 - 17 Nov 1946). That's it!
