For the above land I gave in exchange 100 acres of land in Burleson Co. & executed my notes for balance of $500, which notes are now due and I am unable to pay same. Property sold or conveyed with two years: For the 80 acres mentioned in answer to last question, I traded the 100 acres of land in Burleson Co. & gave my notes as before stated for balance purchase money for said 80 acres to wit: $500 value the 100 acres mentioned at time of sale was $600. Baggett belonging to this Co. or Regiment; we are positive that W. J. Baggett applicant for pension is the identical person service as testified by us, having lived near him for years. We know he is not able to do hard work. He never deserted the Confederate service. 1 July 1902. Not indigent. Owns 80 acres of land/500, & other personal Property. See Coleman Co. Tax Rolls. BAGGETT, W. J. [1907], Milam, Milano, age 65 on 20th of February 1907, lived in Milano about 15 months. Applied once at Ballinger, but never heard from it. Farmer, not able to work, some nervous trouble, exposure and general debility of age. Command organized in North Carolina, enlisted about July 1856, 1861, Discharged at surrender in 1865, Company A, 31st North Carolina Infantry. Owns nothing. I owned a home worth about $600 in Ballinger but I owed about $300 and had to sell it to pay the debt. Wife has no property in own right. Receives no income, unable to earn a support; never deserted, has lived in TX since before 1 January 1880. Signed W. J. Baggett, 24 Jan 1906. Affidavit of Witnesses, Neill Baggett, S. T. Dickinson, & T. J. Tabor, 28 Jan 1907. Dr. Thos. A. Pope said "old age and debility following paralytic attack which occurred some years ago." In response to request for verification of service, War Dept. wrote: "The records show that W. J. Baggett, private, Company A, 31st North Carolina Infantry, C.S.A., enlisted Sept. 6, 1861, and that he deserted Sept. 29, 1864. No later record of him has been found." Ex Parte for W. J. Baggett, Milam Co., by J. P. Mercer: he is 64 years old, living Calvert, Texas: I have known him practically all of my life; [met him in Robinson County, North Carolina, about 1850; I personally know that W. J. Baggett, applicant for pension, enlisted in the service of the Confederacy, and performed the duties of a soldier -- I never knew of any service by him as a sailor; I personally know that W.J. Baggett, enlisted and served in Company A., 31st, North Carolina Regiment, C.S.A. I do not know of my own personal knowledge when said W.J. Baggett enlisted, nor do I know the length of time he served, but I do know, as stated that he served in Co. A, 31st, North Carolina, and that he made a good soldier. My impression is that he served practically through the War. He enlisted from Robinson County, North Carolina; I can not answer this question of my own knowledge, but I do not think that said applicant can support himself by his labor; I have answered from my own personal knowledge. I was a soldier in the same Brigade with said W. J. Baggett and saw him often while he was in the service. I never knew of any orther [sic] Confederate soldier of sailor named W. J. Baggett; My answer to 6th, Direct Interrogatory is based largely upon conjecture. W. J. Bagget never deserted the service in the Confederate army. Signed J. P. Mercer. Before me, John Watson, County Judge of Milam County, Texas, on this day personally appeared Neill Baggett, a credible citizen and witness, who resides in Milam County, Texas, and whose post office address is Chriesman, Texas, and being first duly sworn, on oath says that he is a brother to William Joseph Baggett, who as W. J. Bagett, has applied for a pension under the Confederate Pension Law, and that he has known the said applicant all his life. That deponent is Seventy six (76) years old. That he personally knows the applicant W. J. Bagget, and has known him all the life time of said applicant [over this is written You said that already]. That he personally knows that the applicant enlisted and served in the Confederate army, in North Carolina Infantry, Company A. 31st N. C. Infantry, and both were under General Lee most of the time during the Confederate War. That applicant served three and half years. That applicant is unable to support himself by labor of any sort. That deponent did not know of any other solider or sailor by the name of W. J. Baggett in the same regiment or in any regiment. That he is positive and certain that the said W. J. Baggett is one and the same W. J. Baggett who served in the said army, in said company. I know from personal knowledge that applicant is unable from his physical condition to earn a living by his own labor, from any source. I know that the applicant never deserted the service in the Confederate army. Neill=X=Baggett. 24 Jan 1907, witness to signature, William Bounds. Disposition: "Deserter" disapproved March 25, 1907.
