FUNERAL SERVICES HELD AT NORTON FOR J. D. MILLER
Was Formerly Postmaster at NORTON
Funeral services and last rites for J. D. Miller of Lampasas, formerly of NORTON, held from the graveside in the NORTON cemetery Thursday afternoon at four o'clock, were conducted by Rev. W. T. Hamor, Baptist church pastor, assisted by Rev. C. A. Morton, pastor of the First Baptist church of Ballinger and the NORTON Baptist pastor.
Mr. Miller was born in the state of Mississippi on August 13, 1857, and passed away Wednesday evening at 9:30 o'clock at his home in Lampasas. In failing health for the past several years, he had enjoyed fair activity until this past December. In January he suffered a fall causing possible hip fractures which seemed to result in a more rapid decline in his health and strength. He had since been bedfast at his home in Lampasas.
The deceased came to Texas as a lad with his parents the late Rev. and Mrs. Milton Miller, locating in Kaufman county. His father was a pioneer Baptist clergyman. He later met and was married to Miss Alma Russell in that county and the couple made that section their home until her death some years later. A daughter, Mrs. J. T. McCaughan of Ballinger, survives that marriage union.
Mr. Miller later married Mrs. Maggie Wilson in Lee County, and they came to West Texas in 1896 first locating at Winters, and where he was engaged in farming. They moved to NORTON in 1900, where he actively operated a drug store there, also serving as postmaster for a time. It was in 1917 that Mr. Miller suffered the loss of his second companion, one daughter and two sons surviving this union. The daughter, however, passed away in 1921.
Having desires to retire from active business responsibilities which he had shared with his son, Estin, during the years at NORTON, the deceased moved to Burnet county in 1921 and had been at Lampasas the past three years.
He was converted during early manhood uniting with the Missionary Baptist church and had remained loyal to his faith during the intervening years.
Surviving are the daughter, Mrs. J. T. McCaughan of Ballinger; two sons, A. C. Miller of Lampasas and M. Estin Miller of Abilene; one stepson, T. M. Wilson of O'Donnell. There are six grandchildren, also one great-grandchild, including numerous other relatives.
Pallbearers were F. M. Will, J. F. Priddy, Carl Lewis, J. F. Mackey, Joe Martin and Milored Cope.
* Note: There is no date or even newspaper name, but from the content it seems to have been a Lampasas paper. J. D. Miller would have died after 1925 and before 1951.
