I am doing the research for a book on the 1926 Galveston Bathing Girl Revue. One of the contestants was a Keron Sarah Roberts,(photo) the daughter of Gideon (b. 1876-ish) and Elliot Pollard Roberts (b. 1880-ish) of Red River Co. She had a sister, Ivy (b. 1900-ish) and a brother, Melton (b. 1906-ish). The family farmed around Avery, but later moved to Texarkana. I am looking for info on the family, where they may have lived, etc.
Keron married a Lovan Q. Hall around 1925 and lived in Houston, Corpus, and San Antonio.

Lowell Herzog
Brenham, TX
979/836/7715 (leave message if I'm not in)
herzogtamu89@gmail.com

Unfortunately, the names of slaves were not recorded on Texas census. The first record of newly-freed slaves was/is the 1867 Voter Registration Rolls. Some counties documented the birthplace of registrants. Your best hope is cooperation of descendants of former slave-owners. Slaves, by name, were often mentioned in wills and other probate documents. George H. Bigby (ca. 1801 VA) listed on 1860 Slave Schedule with numerous persons. That's also true of Jane Bigby (ca. 1809 GA) who probably inherited her husband's (John A. [ca. 1791 VA] estate. Good luck!

Is there anywhere that wills or slave lists can be found for Red River County Texas? I am new to the African American research and am doing it for my daughter-in-law. I can trace her Bagby and Elder family back to 1870 in Red River Texas, but haven't been able to go any further. Looking for some ideas on where to start. I know that Edmond Bagby lived in Clarksville TX in 1880. His son was Aaron and his son was Alotis. Alotis' mother was Eliza Elder who is the daughter of Sally Elder.

Thanks for your help. Very interesting. I have copy of Anna Silberberg (aka Silborg)death certificate. Shows mother as Frances Green of Indiana and father as Andrew Stobaugh of Kentucky. Frances could be Sarah Frances if she married a Mr Green before Teague? Could Mrs Wilson Teague be Mrs William Teague? Have found a J Andrew Stobaugh born KY. Also found elderly Sarah F & William E Teague in Red River 1900. The same as Rebecca Terry's grandparents? All very confusing. Anything else you discover would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not related and intend no disrespect! She may have been born out of wedlock to Sarah Frances Stobaugh? Sarah married William Emery Teague and one of their offsprings was Matilda (ca. 1866) who wed Napoleon E. Terry (ca. 1843). Matilda and Napoleon Terry had Rebecca A. Terry (ca. 1898). In 1930 Denver, CO Rebecca lived with her aunt Anna "Silborg" and cousin Andrew. A. Stobaugh wed I. Silberberg, 14 Jan 1900 in Red River.

Wow, been a long times since I have posted on this site, I have missed it. I took a quick look and I instantly saw "Lanes Chapel Cemetery" query and I should be able to help, hopefully. I live in Paris, Tx but was raised and lived in Red River county and today and can you believe I was at the Lanes Chapel Cemetery today and at the communtiy center. My wife's mother was buried there about 2 months ago her brother lives about 1/2 mile from the cemetery. I have been ther many time due to other family relatives and friends buried there. I will see what I can find out out about Mary A Cagle. I knew some Cagle family when I was growing up in Clarksville in my teens in the 1950. Today I took a drive past that cemetery and continued around, back to FM 412 and around to Boxelder then went north toward Annon but cut acroos on FM 1701 to make a run through Avery and showed my son-in-law where I had the pharmacy in Avery in the 70s and two different places we lived including the old John Medford house. Avery was quiet. It will probably be at least a few days before I get any information and maybe much longer that that if I have the trip myself. I don't get around like I use to. BTW, the cemetery is in extremely good shape. Jim Giddens, the Rambler
My great aunt Irena or Arena Johnson tells the story that her family was attacked by Indians and all killed except her who was saved by their black nanny. They are listed on the 1860 Census in Red River County, Texas W. Johnson (father) Matilda (mother) and the following children: Arena age 7, William age 4, Sarah age 3, and Bradford born Apr 1860. If you have any information about this family please let me know. They do not show up anywhere in the 1870 Census except Irena. Irena (Arena) married Jesse Davis 12 Dec 1866 in Red River County when she was only 13. If anyone has any informaion on this family or on the Indian raids in Red River County in the early 1860's please contact me at wolfefam@gci.net or phone 907-235-7174

Ola,

My family has an oral history of my grandfather's grandfather and his wife being killed on the Red River by "whites". My Grandfather was part Cherokee. His name was Oley Smith. My grandfathers grandfather was Jackson Smith and his wife's name was Sarah. If the story is true they would have had to been killed after 1870 when their last child was born. Have you found any other information about what you have been looking for?

Dorothy

Hello,
I was just discussing Gladys and Guy with a cousin of yours the other day. She is the daughter of Ancil Honeywell Guy's brother.

I doubt we have a much more colorful character in our family tree than Garrett Igo. Born in Boone's Fort, Kentucky the family moved to Texas when Garrett was only 3. He joined the Texas Calvary at barely 14 and rode-off into a bitter war. He was in Vicksburg, MS when the Confederate forces were surrendered. He was shipped to a Union prison camp (I have attached the paperwork involving his capture & imprisonment on Ancestry.com)

The 'Yankees' paroled him to go home & fight no more. No sooner did he get home then he joined another calvary outfit. The War ended before he was able to get back to action.

I wrote-out a narrative of Garrett's life blending all I was told about him and filled-in with guesses (fiction). If you would like to read it I would be glad to send it to you.

My grandmother was Ruby, Garrett's daughter. Ancil Honeywell once told me he remembered Ruby visiting Gladys fairly often when they lived in Wright City. Ruby was a favorite of mine.

We were in Sweet Home a few years ago to visit my wife's aunt Mickey Bess...Wife of Ray Bess. They moved there many years ago.

Please let me know if you would like more information about our family any whom.

John Lambe

PS Garrett & Ruby are buried in Denison cemetery in Idabel. Thelma, who died as a baby, flu I believ, and sister to Gladys is also burried in that plot.

They most likely married in red river texas

Thomas and mary jackson had 4 children, only one living in 1900 according to the census..this would be john jackson

The family primarily started out living in carroll county mississippi..by 1870-1880 they where living in red river texas by 1882 they where living in celeste texas. Thomas died in 1916 and mary 1930

I have all the census records.pension records, obits, etc, none of these records mention the other 2 children..I would assume they died between 1870-late 1880's

if any one can help id so appreciate it and if someone can can do a library look up for john c andersons death record that would be a plus..

Thomas Jefferson Jackson is my GGreat Uncle
Don't know how I missed the opportunity to "butt-in" on this conversation earlier?(lol) I've logged-on daily for the past 12 years and Red River is one of favorite counties. Your Stafford-roots are relatively easy to research. Minnie's parents were Robert Jehu Stafford (8 Aug 1849 - 13 Sep 1911) and Mary Louisa Crews (1855-1886). They're buried in Montgomery County, AR. R. J. Stafford remarried Mrs. Mary Neighbors, 15 May 1892, in Montgomery, AR. Find the Stafford-family 1900 AR-Montgomery-Caney-District 0130-Image 4 then 1880 AR-Montgomery-Gap-111-Image 18. Next door in 1880 lived Josiah Stafford(63), father of Robert Jehu. Click on Josiah and be guided to earlier census. I need to make note of an error on vital records. Minnie Aron Tackett (1884 - 21 Jan 1958) buried in Red River County. Minnie Garrett (18 Feb 1884 - 21 Mar 1956) buried in Lubbock County. The Lubbock burial is actually Minnie's twin Ninnie. Mary J. Stafford (Dec 1860 - 6 Jul 1904) died in Pike, AR. You'll find "R. Z." Stafford(59) widowed with fve chilren there in 1910. If you click on individual names 1900 and 1910, you'll be directed to subsequent census.

yes, we are definitely related. Shelby Gene and I are 2nd cousins. I would love to connect with my Tackett Family. I live in Valliant, OK just across Red River from Clarksville, TX. Is there ever a family reunion?
I have heard my mother talk lots about her Aunt Minnie, Aunt Ninnie and Aunt Nerve (on the Stafford side) Would you be interested in sharing the Minnie Stafford info on down to you?

Jaysons uncle? Huh.....Yes Jayson knows alot of people as he grew up in Grand Prairie but he doesn't know anything about these people and whatever help his family tellls you they will be ...... they will just make it so that you are more confused and don't know what to beleive. If we had all this info don't you think I would not have to be on here asking you nay begging you for just one picture....one contact person........they do this though they get involved it is like they are hiding something its twisted and he ends up getting hurt somehow. I hope you will tell me whats going on and not be coy with me. Who contacted you or do you know us......Is this all a farce. I still can't find his obituary....if they wanted to help him or tell him anything about this family don't you think they would have saved an obituary or something ....of course he is going to be curious as to lineage.....ok. You can call me on 214-695-7193....sorry about my phone

Believe I cannot proceed farther. You are not accepting phone calls. Jason's uncle insists he knows how to get in touch with relatives in Grand Prairie. The obit was found on Genealogy Bank, a paid research service. I do not have a scanner so that is not an option. Best wishes! Also, I do not have access to photos.

What...........he has an obituary.....I am stunned. Where did you find that, how did you find that.......I am asking the wrong questions here I am just so incredibly shocked and impressed and filled with anticipation and sadness at the same time. WOW, so this is new to us. He named Jayson in his obituary ..... we didn't know if he really knew we actually don't know much. Hell you know more than we do.....We didn't know they had so many kids. You are amazing. Can you give me the link to see the obituary and also any pics as I am sure you already have. How can I repay you.....Let me buy next months subscription for you or let me send you an amazon gift card or please let me feel like I am contributing as well. No I don not have a suscription myself because I never found anything in the 10 years I have looked. My mother does and she tried to look and never found anything for the last 4 years. You just have done so much, I found a Cardwell Project link. Yes they are doing a study worldwide trying to link up this crazy family to one another because apparently since 1750 they have not been able to keep up with this bunch and there are alot of them like nomads just wondering about everywhere not staying in touch. So they are all spread out and were you able to find any sort of picture and also contact info and you can call me or email me directly. Just let me know the subject in the email from you so I will know it is ligit and I will give you my phone number and I would love love love to talk to you............
THANK YOU

Where do you guys go from here? In Roy's obit, he was survived by: son Jason Cardwell Freeman of Grand Prairie, father W. T. Caldwell of Grand Prairie, mother Lily Cardwell of Austin, brother Gary Cardwell of Houston, and three sisters: Lulu Groom of Eustace, Carolyn Swatsell of Grand Prairie, and Evelyn Norton of Utah. Lulu was/is the sister born Leota B. and she shared both parents with Roy. Gary and Carolyn were born to W. T.'s first wife Mary Ellen Stotts. Uncertain about Evelyn's parentage. Do you subscribe to ancestry.com? If so, I'll forward contact info off-line.

Sorry, but I'm not related or even residing in Texas! To learn more, will require some "legwork" on your end! William T. Cardwell Jr died 17 Sep 2006 in Athens, TX. See if you can locate an obit which should provide names of survivors and possibly relatives who died before him? His mom Willie died 12 Oct 1982 and sister Venita Cummins (7 Jan 2005) expired in Grand Prairie. Their obits should also lead to other relatives. Roy B. Cardwell died 27 Oct 1993 and is buried in Arlington. His obit might prove helpful?
