Re: Looking for decendents of James Nathan Browning 1850-1921

James Nathan Browning (March 13, 1850 – November 9, 1921) was a Texas politician and lawyer. He served as Lieutenant Governor from 1898-1902. He had earlier served as a member of the Texas House of Representatives(1883-89, 1891).[1] A later Lieutenant Governor, Rick Perry, made the following comments when he was sworn in on January 19, 1999.

One hundred years and two days ago, Governor Joseph Sayers and Lieutenant Governor James Browning came to the 11-year-old Capitol building during one of the coldest winters ever recorded in Texas and took the oath of office. The Texans assembled on that day could not have imagined what the 20th century would bring or the role Texans would play in the most American of centuries.[2]

Browning was born in Clark County, Arkansas, and is buried in Amarillo, Texas.

BROWNING, JAMES NATHAN (1850-1921). James Nathan Browning, attorney and lieutenant governor of Texas, son of William F. and Mary L. (Burke) Browning, was born on a farm near Arkadelphia, Clark County, Arkansas, on March 13, 1850. His father died when James was four, and his mother later married J. F. Stegall. The Civil Warqv ended early school advantages for Browning, but he educated himself during his spare time. In 1866 the family moved to Cooke County, Texas. After working as a cowboy in Stephens County for a year, Browning went into partnership with his brother Joe in the cattle business at Fort Griffin, a venture that often brought the partners in contact with Indian warfare.

While ranching at Fort Griffin, Browning studied law under C. K. Stribling. He was admitted to the bar at Albany in 1876 and served for a while as justice of the peace, then as Shackelford county attorney for two years. He turned reforming zeal against gambling and other frontier vices and taught a Sunday school class. He married Cornelia E. Beckham, who died in childbirth two years later. He subsequently married Virginia Bozeman, on March 9, 1879; they had five sons and four daughters. In 1881 Browning resigned as county attorney and moved to Mobeetie, where he was appointed attorney of the Thirty-fifth Judicial District by Governor Oran M. Roberts.qv He was elected to four terms as representative in the Texas legislature from the Forty-third District, in 1882, 1884, 1886, and 1890. As a legislator he led the "free grass" elements in opposition to the leasing of large tracts of school lands to big cattle raisers in Northwest Texas. He also served as a member of the committees on penitentiaries and irrigation and was chairman of the judiciary committee. Browning's honesty and fairness won the respect of his constituents, who bestowed upon him the nickname "Honest Jim."

In 1888 he declined to run again for the legislature and moved his law practice from Mobeetie to Clarendon. In February 1896 he moved to Amarillo and formed a law partnership with W. H. Madden, with whom he remained for the next sixteen years. In 1898, after nomination by the Texas Democratic convention, Browning was elected to his first term as lieutenant governor. Before he took office, his son Fred was fatally injured by a fall from a horse. Browning was reelected lieutenant governor on the Democratic ticket with Governor Joseph D. Sayers.qv After leaving office in 1903 he was appointed to the University of Texas Board of Regents by Governor S. W. T. Lanham.qv In 1904 Browning opened his own law firm in Amarillo. He was elected district judge in 1906 and served for eight years. Throughout his later years he was active in his community as a Mason, a Shriner, and a member of the local Methodist church. He died at Amarillo on November 9, 1921, and was buried there in Llano Cemetery.

In the late 1980's I lived in Niagara Falls N.Y. I visited Lockport, N.Y. which holds many, many Mapes in the cemetery there. I know that my Oliver Mapes in Potter/Bexas Co, TX was a dentist there. His daughter, Olive Mapes, was my grandmother. Thanks for your input. We're probably related by the many branches of this family that began on Long Island, N.Y.

Vidia, Thank you for your quick reply. I had forgotten about family search having the Texas death certificates online. This helped to prove who her mother was, which is the main information that I needed. Thank you once again.

Caroline

I am hoping that someone could do an obit lookup for me for May RUTHERFORD who died 28 May 1928, possibly in Amarillo. According to the Texas death index she died in Potter county. She was the wife of Emery Rutherford and mother of Harold Ellsworth Turner. I am trying to find, through her obit, information on her mother and sisters.

I thank you in advance and will pay you for helping me with this.

Caroline Barrow
csbarrow@swbell.net
Yukon, OK

She is buried at the Jewish Cemetery located off Airline near the 610 Loop and I45. I haven't spoken with her family since we had Kaddish (sp?) the next year.

Dear Ruth
Thank you for the information on Rosalyn Leve. Is there any way I could get a copy of the newspaper articles regarding finding her and her death?
It has come to light that the man who killed my niece also killed Rosalyn. He is in Prison in Oregon and we go every year to keep him there. The newspaper articles would be very helpful. The same person was the boy friend of both girls who looked almost identical. The police told us that he was suspected but there was not enough evidence to convict him. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You so very much
Rita Eastman
riteastman@aol.com

Hi Kathy
There is a very long story connected with my search for Rosalyn Leva. I finally found her sister, mother and a brother. They have been very kind and have told us all they know about this. How well did you know her if you don't mind me asking? I will tell you a little of why I was looking for her. Rosalyn had a boy frind at the time of her death his name was Gerald 'Gerry' Batty. He some years later met my niece and murdered her. The police told us he was suspected of Rosalyn's death but they never could prove it. He is now in the Oregon Prison and comes up for parole. My daughter and I go every year and try to make sure he stays where he belongs. If you knew him or anything that could help us I would be so appreciative. Did you know her while she was with him? Rosalyn and Laurie were the same age's and looked very similiar. Anything you might know might help. Thank you very much. My email address is riteastman@aol.com Most Sincerely Rita Eastman

I am doing some research for my half sister Sheila Kathleen Conner(now Schiller;dob was July 12th 1951)).Her grandmother on her dad's side was named Myrtle Moore. She died in 1972 at age 74.My half sister's father was named Charles Lloyd Conner. He was born 1-3-28 in Odessa Texas we believe.Sheila's last contact with him was in 1974.He had two other children with our mother Doris Mae Spencer.Son Charles Lyle"Chuck" Conner(dob 12-6-47)and Doris Ann"Sunny"Conner(now Maxwell). Her dob was June 2 1949 I think. Not sure on year. There was also a "surprise" child born June 2 1968 named Melanie Elaine Conner(my youngest half sister).Chuck and Sunny's last contact with Charles Lloyd was in 1968.Charles Lloyd had 2 sisters who were tall women.Wanda Boatwright and Kathleen Conner.Wanda had 2 daughters that Sheila was pen pals with as a teenager. The"girls"were Janice and Robin and they lived at Rural Route 1,Box 88-A in Plano Texas.Charles Lloyd may have had a relationship with a woman in Nebraska named Janie or Jamie or possibly Janet. They may have had a daughter they named Ann Conner. She was 18 months old in 1974.My sister Sheila was curious about her father's death which we think was in prison in either California or Texas. She is also curious about the cause of death(murdered?old age?uremia or other health issues?).She does not have a computer so I am helping her out.If any of this is familiar to any of you please contact me.Blessings all~Sharon Goemaere

In the mid-1930's my aunts and uncles were placed in the Texas Children's Home in Amarillo. I'm wondering where the records from this home might be located. Does anyone have some clues as to where I might start looking?

Anita, do you have any more info? William is my great uncle and all I can find out is that he left Ga in 1908 and moved to Amarillo, Texas and only came back once - in 1918. It has been hard to find anything on this family and they are a missing link in my Smith line.

Thanks,

Beverly

Would anyone have a book on listing of burials in Memorial Park Cemetery, in Amarillo? I have found a death certificate that shows a John Anddrew McCoy b. 11/13/1867 & d. 11/27/1960. This sounds like it could be a G.Uncle of my husbands, that I have been looking for. I know his wife, Ada (Addie)Baskin McCoy is also buried in or near this Cemetery, in Potter Co.

I would appreciate a lookup, if anyone has records of this cemetery.

Thanks,

Nelda Thompson
neldathompson@sbcglobal.net
