We are related! He was my "Pappaw" and I was there when he died (in Sweetwater) although I was not allowed in the hospital room (too young). I will look in my grandmother's family Bible when I go home tonight. I remember your mom, Mattie, kind of. My grandmother was Navala Hampton Billington, oldest of 5. Pappaw and my great-grandmother were separated for many years before they actually divorced and I think I can supply you with that date, too.

I am trying to identify my beloved daughter-in-law's Mexican ancestors who moved to Sweetwater in the earlier 1900's.

To begin I really need the obituaries for these 3 persons:

Do you have a "Scott Jones or David Scott Jones" b. 1875 in your family? He had two sons that I know of, Aron C. Jones b. 1906 and Kenneth Jones. They resided in Nolan County in 1910 and 1920. They are related to the Jordan's.

Scott Jones was b. Texas and parents came from Ireland.

Gunfight in Sweetwater

My great-great Grandfather, John Marsh, was killed in a gunfight sometime in the late 19th Century, in Sweetwater. The other man's name was John Duck. I have the newspaper article from the event.

My question is, does anyone have any information on either of these families? Marsh's wife, I only know her maiden name was Plunkett, died shortly afterwards giving birth to the fifth of their children. My great-grandmother, Delma Marsh Spurlock was raised at Buckner Children's Home in Dallas. I have photos of Marsh and his wife and her parent's who have come down to us only as "Ma and Pa Plunkett". Any information anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated.

I may not be able to help with John Taylor, but am curious whether the Sydney Inez Shackelford you mentioned was the daughter of Samuel Green Shackelford, and Daisey Mae Honeycutt. Did she have sisters Leo Lavienta Shackelford and Dora Cumi Shackelford? Inez's birth date would have been ca. 1898. Her mother Daisey, died ca. 1901/1902. Samuel Green was my fathers oldest brother. Sam remarried ca.1903 to Dora Evolyn Traumeral, and they had: Floyd, Wm Green, David Forrest, Oleta Dell, and Samuel Glenn. If this is the same Sydney Inez, I may be able to put you in touch with other living satellite cousins that can answer all of your questions. wshackelford@verizon.net

Do you have any information on the Tiso line? My grandson's last name is Tissaw and I'm helping him with his research. I found some family trees online that give the parents of Louis Tissaw as Jozef Tiso and Anna Plesova. It shows that Louis Tissaw and Mary Ellen Burkett were married in Sweetwater, Nolan, Texas on Feb. 2, 1887. Any information on this line would be greatly appreciated.

I believe this Lillian Gibbs to be the sister of a Merchant Marine hero named Archie Gibbs. He mentioned his sister by name, and also mentioned that George died before WWII started. He wrote a book titled "U-Boat Prisoner" that describes his upbringing, surviving two ship sinkings, being held prisoner aboard a German U-boat etc.

Randol was a Star Player for the Sweetwater Mustangs in 1942
The Military delayed his induction so he could play a final game between the Mustangs and the San Angelo Bobcats. This info came from a Sweetwater news clipping.

Randol was killed in a traffic accident involving a gas transport. A young man named Locke Tuttle managed to swallow his lit cigarette to avoid a fire.

I am wondering what happened to Laura Lee Stone and if she and Randol had any children.

I have an unidentified picture that may be their baby girl. Possibly named “Lara”
This could also possibly be a baby picture of Laura Lee Stone but looks more modern than other pictures in this collection from the 20's so I think it is from the 40's

Any help would be appreciated.

Zana Lucille Lewis, 72, of Sweetwater died, Friday, October 24, 2003 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 27, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at McCoy Chapel of Memories. Rev. Orvel Brantley will be officiating. Burial will follow at Nolan Cemetery in Nolan.

Mrs. Lewis lived in Sweetwater for 49 years and was co-owner of Lewis Pest Control. Mrs. Lewis was born in Coryell County, TX on May 2, 1931. She married Bill Lewis in July of 1948 in Nolan.

She survived by her husband Bill Lewis of Sweetwater; a son, Rusty Lewis of Sweetwater; and two daughters Barbara Threlfall and huband Bill of Canyon, TX, and Carolyn Anne Frawley and husband James of Sweetwater; one brother, Ben Reynolds of Houston, TX; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

It is apparent that we seem to be cousins probably 20 times removed.

My grandmother was "Anna Mae Davis Hall", born April 19, 1904. Died May 21,1961 . She was the daughter of Daniel Boone Davis, born in Burnet Co. Texas on Feb. 14, 1881. Daniel Boone Davis was the son,(13th child)of Sam Houston Davis and Emma E. Spradling. Emma "Edna" was born May 12 1842. She married Sam Houston Davis, born 1-12-1835 in Dickson County, Tennessee in 1856.

I have obtained this information from some handwritten documents that were copied from my grandmother’s family bible. While doing research on the internet on "Sam Houston Davis", I stumbled on your information and it seems to match very well. I would be interested in sharing information with you. I am just getting started on the Davis - Hall side of my family so I don't know how much help I can be to you. I am not related to the Taylors. I try to do lookups and photos at cemeteries for Nolan County when time permits.
