I am a volunteer researcher for the Texas and national police memorials. On or about 29 May 1885 Colorado City deputy city marshal Black HARDEMAN was shot and killed by a gambler named Ben JACOBS at the variety bawdy house. The Fort Worth Daily Gazette (30 May 1885) reports HARDEMAN was in the discharge of his duties. On 5 June 1885 same newspaper reported that JACOBS was given a habeas corpus hearing and bond set at $1,500.
I did find a 1870 census with a Black Hardeman, 48, born in TN married to a Rebecca HARDEMAN and nine children. Not sure it is the same man.
I am interested in any information about this case, including background on HARDEMAN, place of burial, disposition of JACOBS case, and any surviving family members.
