Florence Flemon Sharp Lewallen

I have a question. What happened to Flemon when Michael Lewallen died in 1880. She died in 1922 and I can't find anything about her for those 42 years.

Also, for what it is worth, I have a hand written family record by Josie Chapman's indicating that she was called Flemon, not Flemming. It also shows up on a census the same way. I took a screenshot of the census, but forgot to label which census it was, but she is shown as being 21 years old. So it was probably the 1850 census.

Greg Shepard

John SHEEN & Mary DAVIES' dau. Margaret SHEEN (1844-1919 Menard, TX) md James Joseph CALLAN (1833 IRE-1917 Menard)

Both Margaret Sheen CALLAN & Capt. James Joseph CALLAN are buried in the Pioneer Rest Cemetery as well as Margaret's parents my John SHEEN (1817 Radnorshire, Wales-1887) and my Mary Ann DAVIES (1817 Radnorshire, Wales-1900). Margaret Sheen CALLAN & her husband J. J. CALLAN are in the Camp Colorado, Brown Co., TX 1860 Census with her Sheen parents.

From 1862-64 Captain J. J. Callan had a company of Texas Rangers at the Camp Colorado, Brown Co., TX post. J. J. Callan and Margaret Sheen were the first persons married in Coleman Co., TX, that Callan opened a store on the Jim Ned, about one mile southwest of the post, and also taught a school in his home there.

By 1880 Margaret & James Callan are in Coleman Co., Texas with 8 of their children.

James Joseph Callan, born 1833 in Ireland. He reached Camp Colorado on Christmas Day, 1857, and married Margaret Jane Sheen in 1858. Prior to the Civil War he served in the Texas Rangers, then in March 1862, he joined the Confederacy and was a Captain in Co. I of McCord’s Frontier Reg., Texas Cavalry. In 1864, J. J. was elected to the office of Chief Justice of Coleman County, so he tendered his resignation as Captain in the Confederate Army, November 1, 1864. J. J. and Margaret Jane had 14 children (2 girls stillborn were not named). The others were:
(1) William (1859 - 1862).
(2) Paul (1861 - 1866).
(3) Joseph Taylor (1861 - 1939).
(4) James (1863 - 1934).
(5) Ireneaus Ivanal (Rena) (1867 - 1942).
(6) Marie Virginia (1869 - 1963).
(7) Louis Gonzaga (1871 - 1916).
(8) Austin Benedict (1874 - 1953).
(9) John Berchamms (1875 - 1960).
(10) Leo Alphonsus (1880 - 1937).
(11) Claude Clement (1881 - 1956).
(12) Margaret Florence (1888 - ).

In 1881, J. J. Callan founded the newspaper “Coleman Voice” that merged with the “Coleman Democrat” in 1907 to become the “Democrat-Voice.” The J. J. Callans eventually moved to Menard where they were in the ranching business. James Joseph and Margaret both died in 1919.

!Biography
ANOTHER PIONEER GONE TO REST
After an illness lasting about three weeks, James J. Callan answered the call and passed to the great beyond.

James J. Callan was born in Dundalk, Ireland, May 6, 1833 and died October 4, 1917. At the age of eleven he moved with his parents to America. The family lived in Washington, D. C. and it was there he received most of his schooling, spending several years and graduating in the Georgetown University.

On March 13, 1859 he was married to Margaret M. Sheen at Camp Colorado, Texas, at which time he was in the United States Army, but shortly after was sent to the Mexican border where he served for one year.

For a number of years he was in the newspaper business at Coleman and after moving to Menard continued his writing until he became too feeble.

Mr. Callan for several years served as Commissioner of Menard County and for the past twenty years has been Justice of the Peace, this office he was holding at the time of his death.

A great and good man is gone, one that everybody loved and esteemed for their neighbor and friend. He was a Christian and lived and died a staunch and true believer in the Catholic faith.

"A place is vacant in the home and church
Which never can be filled."

Mr. Callan was a good husband and father and twelve children blest this union, three of whom are deceased: Willie, Paul and Louis. Besides the dear wife the nine children who mourn his departure are: Joseph T. who lives in Menard county, James Menard; Irenaeus, Menard; Marie, (Mrs. Lee L. Russell) Ft. Worth; Austin, Marfa; John Menard; Leo. A., San Antonio; Claude, Kansas City, Mo. and Margaret (Mrs. J. C. Graham) Kimble county; and two sisters of deceased living in Washington; All the children were present except Mrs. Lee Russell, who was in Washington, D. C. and Austin Callan of Marfa.

Funeral services were held over the remains Friday afternoon 3:30 at the Catholic church conducted by Father F. X. Gagnon and concluded at the cemetery at 4 o'clock. (BURIED IN PIONEER REST CEMETERY)

Capt. James Joseph Callan Texas Death Certificate said Occupation was Justice of the Peace at the time of his death.

Marget Sheen Callan's sister my Mary Ann SHEEN (1840 England-1925 buried in Alpine,Brewster, TX) and her husband John Quincy ADAMS bought land in Menard Co., TX in the 1880s. Their son Charles Francis ADAMS & wife Alice Ellison were in the 1880 Menard Co., Texas Federal Census along with their son Burleigh ADAMS.

In 1889 Charley and his father J. Q. Adams were drilling on their section and added 8 more sections of land. But by 1900 Charles F. ADAMS & family moved to Coleman Co., TX where the Sheen family was residing.

I assume Charles moved from Menard Co., TX because his father John Quincy ADAMS was too ill to continue their plans for the land. John Quincy ADAMS died 1902 in Sonora, Sutton, Texas and his wife moved his body to Alpine, Brewster, Texas (Mary Sheen Adams who died in 1925 is buried next to John Q. & their daughter Margaret Adams Clark Slover & her 2nd husband William Yemen Slover.
Hello.

I have come across a unique and nicely done 54-page "book" (for lack of a better word), prepared by students of the 5th thru 7th grades (they call themselves the "Intermediate Classes" of Menard County.) It was prepared in 1942.

It is a one of a kind item; typewritten pages, with lead and colored pencil illustrations on onionskin bond... a homemade yearbook of sorts, simply titled "THE TEJAS" on the cover.

This is followed by a pencil tracing of a dream catcher with a buffalo in the center.

After that comes the foreword (within a hand drawn and colored American Indian Motif frame) reads "In the rocks the Indians have left records of days that have passed. In the following pages the Intermediate Classes wish to leave records of days, which in the nature of things too, must pass."

The foreword is followed by a list of "The Ideals of 1942"..."The Ideal of Sincerity...The Ideal of Ambition...The Ideal of Thrift"...and so on.

After the foreword, it is segregated by grade level, with separate pages of "School Days 1941/42" photos and autobiographies written by students in their respective grade level. The autobiographies offer a poignant look into the lives and thoughts of these young "Menardians."

Each grade level begins with a listing of class officers, colors, flowers, and mottos for for each class, then the biographies, endin with class song(s) and poems.

The class sections are followed by a list of each student and what their adult aspirations.

Finally, the last page depicts a pencil illustration of a horse-mounted Native American in a Hill Country setting, under which is written "The End of the Trail"

It contains the autobiographies of the following students:

* 5th grade:
o Joan Benton
o Alphon Evans
o Carol Johnson
* 6th Grade:
o Betty Ann Hahn
o Romona Faye Hahn
o Lorene Haines
o Hattie Marie McCollum
o Marcelle Stone
* 7th Grade:
o Jim Bob Benton
o Helen Evans
o Al Johnson (no photo)
o Billy Wayne Hight

It is in very good condition, considering its age, the pages still supple with some browning, creases, etc.

It is a unique item that offers a personal glimpse into the thoughts of these children in there young adolescence.

I wish to sell this item.

Can anyone direct me to a person/persons who might be interested in its acquisition?
Look in Crosbyton, Crosby Co, Texas. That's where she lived and is buried at. I have a family researcher that I was in contact with a LONG time ago.
I'm rather late I'm sure. If you are still there, I'm in the process of identifying Green Berry (my GGrandfather) Baker's Children at Ft McKavett. I understand he had 7. His eldest, John Green, Aug 1879, was my Grandfather. His youngest Richard Lewis,b:Jan 1896. It's a little smokey in the middle. I have a family outline to share of what I have.

Mary Willis, b:1875, m. W.W. Burrows, may be R.T Baker's child.
Julia Delta Baker b:1885 m: James Abram Champie abt 1901 and d: Dec 1969 in Phoenix, AZ
Caleb Booker Baker b:1886 and
Robert Henry b. 1894 are all good candidates. I'm 1 or 2 short and need some firm info. Have not found 1890 or 1900 US Census yet and that will help when I do.

Still looking,
Jerry W. Baker

My Grandmother was Alta B.Hamby - married John Green Baker about 1909 to 1910. John was the son of Green Berry Baker in Ft McKavett, both born in Gonzalez County, TX.

I recently found Nannie Casey and Marion Franklin "Frank" Hamby references. I have several pictures handed down of the Hamby's around 1919 and one with family on porch full of girls and "Uncle General" noted as sitting on the step. So was glad to see the "General" nickname. I believe there was an Aunt Trudy, sister to Alta, may be an Albertine?, a friend Angie Webster about 1908.
That's about all I have. would be glad to scan in and send pictures. Good Hunting, Jerry W. Baker

Looking for information on the following family:

The 1900 Federal Census for Menard County (Justice Precinct 3) lists William Mobley, his wife Bulah and their children John E. and Stella.

The 1910 Federal Census shows John, Stella and Blanche Mobley in Bandera County, Texas in the household of their maternal aunt and uncle, Blanche and Ezra Chipman. Their parents are not listed, leading me to believe that they died sometime between Blanche's birth in 1902 and 1910.

Hoping for some leads on the fate of their parents and a possible burial location. Since William's occupation is listed on the census as "Minister of Gospel", I'm hoping someone out there familiar with church history can at least tell me the name of the church that he preached in. I'm hoping the church will have some information about the family.

America Emmaline Mills married Nathaniel B Johnson Dec 27,1874 in Brown County Texas. I know this for fact, I contacted Brown County and they told me they didnt have a lot of records due to fire in 1880, but sent me to inquire with MENARD COUNTY. I am not sure as to the why of this. Family stories suggest that they could have married at an Army Fort. I thought about Ft Griffin, but its only a guess. I have handwriting of the husband Nathaniel, who states he was married on above date in Brown County Texas. She was the daughter of William Mills and Wilmuth Morton, of Brownwood. America was Cherokee Indian. Sure hope someone can help me get some documenation, to show their marriage, Any help appreciated

They lived in the Ft McKavett area and in the Ft until the state turned it into a park. Gazella Crump would have been a daughter of Frank and Marys. I remember going to the Fort visiting my gr grandmother ( Annie.... step great actually). I would also like to know which building she lived in for sure. I dont recognize the layout since the road is different. Thanks, Lori Bihl Dunn

Hello....I haven't been on the boards for some time and just found this message.
My g-grandfather lived in Hext from about 1878 or so until his death in 1933. His farm was next to the Hext cemetery - as a matter of fact, he donated part of the land for this cemetery. His name was William Steven Wilkerson, but he was probably better known as "Billie". One of his sons, Levi Wilkerson, ran a store in Hext at one time.
Any information on this family?
Thanks!
Linda
I am not related to the Cannon family.

I do not find a death record for a Miller in Menard county or any other county named Bobby or "Icie" who died 3 Dec 1960 nor one for her mother Bessie Adams Cannon who appears to have died between 1910 and 1920.

Robert L Cannon was with 2nd wife Lillie Mae in the 1920 census.
