Ray and Mary,

I am looking for any information about the violence which broke out in McLennan, Bell and Coryell Counties in the spring of 1868. A number of Unionists were murdered including Isaac Ellington, an older son of William Ellington and brother to Rebecca Ellington who was married to George Washington Schoonover, also shot down by the mob along with his father, Benjamin Schoonover, my gr-gr grandfather. Do you have any family stories about this event? Would be glad to send you the US Army's report about the killings with names, dates, etc.

Dear Ray and Mary,

If you will send your snail-mail address to me at DonaldG100@aol.com, I will be most happy to send you a Xerox copy of Army Lt. D.F. Stiles' report on the violence in the spring of 1868. I believe that there was much violence in Texas, right after the war between Unionists, who remained loyal to the USA or swore a new allegiance to the USA, and former Rebs who, unlike General Robert E. Lee, could not put the conflict behind them and accept the changes in society and government.

This was also a revelation to me. A Milwaukee,WI newspaper picked up the report and published it ver batim, and a fellow Schoonover genealogist came across it and sent it to me. The report details murders of Unionists in Bell, McLennan and Coryell Counties on the pretext they they were stealing livestock. My gr-gr grandfather, Benjamin Schoonover and his son, George W. Schoonover, husband of Rebecca Ellington were murdered, as was Rebecca's brother, Isaac Ellington. Other killings are also included. George's brother, Peter, escaped and swore out warrants for the arrest of the killers, but according to documents in the Texas State Archives, Peter did not show up for either the arraignment or trial and the case was dismissed. He was afraid to testify so he fled the state and ultimately died in Wyoming. Anyway, would love for you to read the report and give me your views.

Thanks,

Don Green

P.S. My mother was a Schoonover and a gr-grand-daughter of Benjamin. This is one of those skeletons which no one ever told me about.
