It has been a long time since your original post, but I can tell you that some of the family moved to California and were living in Orange County and Los Angeles County. My great-Aunt Ellen Davenport was married to Lee Barnes and they lived in Orange. I believe their daughter's name was Patricia and a son named John. I have not seen them in at least 40 years but I believe both Ellen and Lee are gone now. Ellen passed in Bolivar, MO on 8/22/2012. Lee passed in 2005 but I am not sure where. I remeber visiting that family with my mother - a niece of Ellen and Lee from Ellen's side of the family. They were very very generous and kind to my mother who was recently widowed and her 5 children.

Re: Seeking burial Matthew Byrd/Bird

To the other, a bit of research finds a lot of things...

Beulah: When you post, it is important to fully identify your person for researchers. Their full date of birth helps greatly to find the person among others with the same name. The full date of death also helps greatly. But, in this case there was enough source documentation to find the answer.

I started out searching the US Census for Mathew/ Matthew/ Matt Bird or Byrd. There was NOTHING to be found in Source records. But, there were a number of family trees containing his name and family information.

My research shows the person identified as Matthew Bird that died in 1948 in Littlefield, was actually Samuel Bird. This is pretty much confirmed by the tombstone of Samuel showing date of death of 8 December 1948 in Littlefield and the record of this name within US Census.

I found a number of family trees containing Matthew William Bird, born 18 Jan 1856 in Fair Garden, Sevier County, TN also shown as born 25 Dec 1856. He was son of Samuel Bird, 1829-about 1866 in New Haven, Franklin Co, MO. Mother: Hannah Lawson, born abt 1829 in TN, died after March 20, 1867. Another tree shows Hannah died in Missouri City, Fort Bend Co, TX.
--Fair Garden, TN was the site of a Civil War Battle on January 27, 1864. "IF" the family was living there at that time, they may have moved (See the 1870 Census below).
--The trees show he died on 8 Dec 1948 in Littlefield, Lamb County, TX.
--This "appears" to be family tree copying when the original "fact" was wrong. The family names as found in the Census match those of the trees, except that Matthew was actually Samuel. UNLESS... There "was" a Matthew Bird, born about the same time period between the 1850 and 1860 Census, but did not survive long enough to be found in subsequent records. I believe the former versus the latter.

Lamb County Cemeteries:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txlamb/cemetery.htm
The Littlefield cemetery transcriptions of 1,274 are found on http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=48...;

It has a "Sam" Bird, born Dec 25, 1855, died December 8, 1948(as imaged on the gravestone, not the death date as shown).
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=bi...;

The 1940 Census of Other Places, Lamb County, TX:
Sam Bird, age 84, born in Tennessee
father of W.E. Bird, age 55, TX, farmer and wife Stella, 51.

The 1930 Census of Yukon, Canadian COunty, Oklahoma
Sam Bird, age 71, born in TN to both parents born in TN, widower, first married age 28(circa 1887).

The 1900 census of Carterville, Jasper Co, Missouri
Samuel Bird, age 41, born January 1859 in TN to both parents born in TN, married 12 years (circa 1888).
Rachel, born Jan 1868 in Missouri
Nora, dau, Jan 1879
Lydia D? July 1870
Blanch M, June 1894
Ernest, Nov 1895
Unnamed, Dau Feb 1900.

The 1860 Census of District 7, Jackson Co, TN
Saml Bird, 38, TN
Hannah, 35
Andrew, 10
Mathew, 9 (Could be the Mathew? BUT didn't die as identified).
Elezabeth(as written), 8
Holly, 9
Richard, 6
Samuel 5
Pinckney(as written), 2
John, 8/12
--The 1870 Cnsus of Lyon, Franklin Co, MO, shows a John Bird, age 11, with sister Mary age 8 and "Drury" Bird, 14. Living with the Harden Walton Family. If Samuel Sr. did die in Franklin Co in 1866, these "might" be his children.

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA
Hi,

I searched through the cemeteries that are indexed online but didn't find him. However, the Littlefield Cemetery is only partially transcribed. There is a contact person at Tombstone Transcription Project, http://usgwtombstones.org/texas/lamb.html.

Click on the names to the right of the Littlefield Cemetery and their email address will appear in Outlook. I can't provide that here because of Rootsweb/Ancestry's privacy rules.

Another possible source is to contacct the Lamb County Clerk for his death record. It may or may not have where he was buried.

Sometimes place of burial is mentioned in the obituary. There isn't a genealogical society in this county but you could do a Google search and look up the Lamb County Texas Public Library and ask them if they'll supply a copy of his obituary. Successful Searching!

I have posted several places and have looked everywhere on the internet.

He was born in Quincy, Mass. He was in Vietnam. Lived in NY, Mass, California and Florida. Born 1942. That's all I know. He mentioned that someone by the name of Walter taught him how to drive. Walter married Barbara C.. There is also a correlation to a Bill and Gladys Lyman. He said his sisters name's were Maryann Murphy Troublefield and Patricia Murphy Deery. He Also mentioned something about a Pete O'Lamb who was a chief of detectives in Ft. Apache. That's all I know. He passed away in Georgia in 2001. He didn't really keep in touch with anyone and I was three when I moved to CA and didn't know any of his side of the family.

Sorry for "TMI" but I wanted to be detailed.

I'll try a few things tomorrow...maybe find some suggestions for you.

Did you try asking for his Social Security application? Military records? They may have information. Both are hard to get...but if you can get a death cert that may help get the others.
Marge

If his last name was Murphy, and his mom's married name was Murphy...then the dad's should be John Murphy.

Are you looking for him in Lamb county TX? If you are looking for a last name of Lamb...then you want the LAMB surname group. Where was your Joseph/Elliott born? Where did he live?

Thanks, Marge. Charleyne tried with Mr. Price but no luck. We believe she is buried in the Littlefield Cemetery but the records are lost. Charleyne did located the obituary for me, which I was really happy to get. In a few minutes I'll forward our last email exchange to you so you can see the search she made. Based on the obituary she sent and some pics I had I was able to set up a FindAGrave memorial for my great grandmother.
Thank you so much, Charleyne. Wow, what a mystery this has become. I hope they can find the obituary. I know that she lived with her husband, daughter and son-in-law at Amherst and later at Fieldton. Martha's death certificate gives her residence as Fieldton, but her place of remvoval or burial at Littlefield. If they didn't bury her in Littlefield, then I would think they would have gone to a emetery close to Fieldton or Amherst. Thanks so much for your help. Jon

Thank you, Charleyne. I really appreciate this. I hope I'm not pestering you. I've been snowed in since yesterday and have had plenty of time to think about ancestors. Martha Gant died five years before I was born but I heard many stories about her from my gandmother, who once told me I was more like her in temperament than any of her children or grandchildren. If you are interested, you can go to the Find-A-Grave website and look up memorial #16683740, which includes a picture of both of them. It also has his obituary, which the family had preserved, and which describes their time in Amherst and Fieldton. If the Leader finds her obituary, I would love to know what it says. Thank you again and let me know if I can ever help you. Jon

We checked the cemetery records again to see if there was a Fewell listed. No luck. Thought they might have bought the lot under their name. Hammons does not have the records for the old cemtery anymore. They are located at Calvin Price office, CPA. We have two funeral homes in Littlefield now and they thought it would be a conflict of interest for them to keep the records.
I called the newspaper office and when they get some time they will check the old papers for an obituary.
How nice to know people are trying to help. Thanks so much!

Following your suggestions I looked at the death certificate. The undertaker's signature is a little hard to read, but appears to be something like "Pryor Hammonds." I Googled Littlefied Cemeteries and found Hammons Funeral Home. I went to their website and submitted an inquiry to their "contact us" email address.

Martha Gant went by the nickname "Mattie" and was the widow of a Baptist minister who served Baptist churches in Amherst and later Fieldton. In 1935, while at Fieldton living with their daughter and her husband, he became ill and was eventually taken to a Dallas hospital where he died. Since he died in Dallas, and had years earlier pastored a church in Prairie Valley (Hill County), he was taken there and buried in a family plot. However, I have visited the Prairie Valley gravesite and Martha is not there. I remember being told that when she died in Littlefield five years later, the family didn't have money to take her to Hill County and buried her in Lamb County.

The daughter who lived in Fieldton at that time was Mrs. W.P. Fewell (her name was Minnie). However, they left Fieldton within a few years and relocated to Vernon, Texas, where they lived the remainder of their lives.

Hopefully the Hammons Funeral Home will be able to tell me the cemetery where Martha Gant was buried. If so, I may aks if someone can take a photo of her marker - when the weather is nice of course! Today in Oklahoma we are in our first blizzard of the year.

Thank you for your help!!! Jon Long

Does her death certificate list an undertaker? They may have record of her burial. Littlefield has more than two cemeteries.
It's way to cold to go out today...wind chill is -12 right now, 9 degrees out..brrr.

Maybe a call to the different cemeteries. I don't know that all have a phone, I've only lived here five years & have been to the cemetery once.

You know, a call to the Leader Newspaper may help also. The old cemetery was in bad shape and a new group has taken over. They may have a list of burials.

Marge

I would like to know the location of my great grandmother's grave in Lamb County, Texas. Her name is Martha M. Gant and according to her death certificate she died in Littlefield, Texas on July 8, 1940. The "place of burial or removal" is also listed as Littlefield. Her residence, at the time of her death was Fieldton, Texas in Lamb County. I have searched the on-line records, including those for Find-A-Grave, for all the cemeteries in Lamb County, and particulary Littlefield, and have not found her.

Charlie Hudson Henderson 1916 - 2010

Charlie Henderson
Charlie Hudson Henderson of Star Valley passed away peacefully at home with son Fred at his bedside on May 23, 2010.
He was born March 5, 1916 near Olton, Lamb County, Texas, the oldest of 12. His parents were Ridland Green “Green” Henderson and Frankie Ann Slover Henderson.
Mr. Henderson married Ruth Buchanan Walker on Oct. 17, 1947. They came to the Payson area on Feb. 9, 1948 to run the ranch at Little Green Valley for Lawrence Anderson. He worked there until his retirement.
He was an Army artillery gunner during World War II, serving stateside and in the Philippines.
Mr. Henderson is survived by his son, Fred (Paty) Henderson of Star Valley; grandsons, Mike Henderson of Star Valley and Justin Henderson of Payson; granddaughters, Susan (Eric) Warner of Sisters, Ore., and Carey Ashley and Rose Henderson, both of Payson. Also surviving are eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Green and Frankie Henderson; brothers, Frank Price Henderson and Clifford Henderson; sisters, Anna Lou Huff, Nola Dean Stewart and Mary Elizabeth Bliss; his beloved wife, Ruth; and stepson, Gerald Walker.
In keeping with Mr. Henderson’s philosophy of helping all who asked, the family wishes that donations and flowers be set aside and that you “pay it forward” with a kindly thought for him. Should you choose to lift a glass in his memory,
Have you tried the city & county records offices? Also, the museum?
I go by the hotel often..almost daily. At least I did until I broke my ankle...been trying to get to a cemetery or two... haven't been able to yet...either raining, muddy or leg is just too swollen from house & yardwork (which I shouldn't be doing a lot of).

I have only lived in Littlefield for about 5 years, so don't have a lot on the history of the area.

Here is a link to the museum

http://www.littlefieldmuseum.com/
