The King Ranch ("the oldest and greatest ranch in Texas" per Mona D. Sizer) is not in King County, but in south Texas nearer the Gulf Coast. First owned by Capt. Richard King, who came from New York. I have a copy of "The King Ranch Story, Truth and Myth" by Mona Sizer (who has written more than 20 romance novels). She lists about ten more books about the King Ranch as her sources, so I am sure you will be able to find considerable documentation on the Kings.

(June 21, 2003). I have considerable information on the Carpenters and regularly correspond with them if I can help you in any way. I will write to you independently since I didn't have your name in my genealogy --- only Shirley Murphy.

Her gr-parents, Thomas Columbus Carpenter and Mary Jones, raised the Woodard children. She said they came with this family from Ms to Tx. On 1900 census, King Co, Samuel O Woodard is a cousin. Keep me posted if you find anything;

Shelbys and Flippins in Dumont

Another researcher shared an article she had in her files about my Walker family. Louisa J. Walker b. Jan. 26, 1851 m. 1)James Asberry Flippin Oct. 13, 1878 in Comanche Co., TX. She married 2) W. H. Shelby July 2, 1885 in the same county. Louisa's younger sister Mary Dove Walker b. Sept. 5, 1868 m. John H. Shelby January 29, 1893, county unknown. The article states that "Dove" and John Shelby came to King Co. in a wagon train from Indian Territory in 1904-05 and were among the first to build a house in Dumont. John hauled freight and mail and later ran a gas station in Dumont across from the gin. Louisa Walker Flippin Shelby lived with her sister and bro-in-law, and her Flippin family visited there. John died of face cancer abt. 1936, and Dove eventually went to Farmington NM to live with another sister, Annie Stocking, where she died in the 1950's.

I'd appreciate any additional information, especially regarding the children of Louisa, and her date of death. These sisters were the daughters of Asher Walker and Nancy Ann Johnson. Asher was buried in Dumont Cemetery in 1913, so he probably came to King Co. to live with his daughters. Their younger brother, Perry Asher Walker, was my g-grandfather.

Re: 6666 Ranch / Pitchfork Ranch

I have a book called "King County: Windmills and Barbed Wire". This book covers King County, Texas. There is a W.C. King originally from Paris, TN who arrived in Texas in 1914. This info was entered into the book by his wife Deva C. King, 3729 Gene Lane, Ft. Worth, TX 76117. This book was published in 1976 so I doubt that she is still around. It appears, according to the book, that the 6666 Ranch was started by Burk Burnett. The ranch is still, or was in 1976, in the family. The Pitchfork was started by D.B. Gardner and Col. J.S. Godwin. I don't see any mention in the book of a King being owner of either ranch.

My grandfather, A.C. Miller, was a chuck wagon cook for both the 6666 Ranch and the Pitchfork Ranch. I'm not sure of the time period. I did find a book on the Pitchfork Ranch that had a lot of his kinfolk listed on the payroll roster but not him. Does anyone know where I can get the information, particularly for the 6666 Ranch. I have already placed an order to purchase the book on the Pitchfork Ranch.
