I have one of those elusive family members in my genealogy search- he was my great-grandfather. Born in New Jersey, and lived in Pennsylvania in the 1920 census with my grandfather and great-grandmother. He ended up leaving them and ended up in Kerrville, TX, where he died in 1984. I have his death certificate which shows he died in the VA hospital and had been living at the MeadowView Nursing Home. I haven't been able to find any information on that nursing home. Can someone provide some help?

I am looking for Mary Ellen Smith, born about 1918 in Indiana. Smith was her married name. Her maiden name was Buhmiller. I know she lived in Kerrville in 1989 from her sister's obituary.
Does anyone have access to records that might help me find more info on her. I do not know her husband's first name. I assume she is deceased now, so perhaps an obituary for her? Or city directory from 1989? She had worked as the deputy county clerk in the 60s.

Even though I find that I'm mostly writing this to myself, John Hardin's Middle name was really William. He was named after one of his grandfathers: Capt. John W. Hardin, born in Kentucky territory in 1771. I surmise the territory may have been owned by Virginia back then. My grandfather had lots of trouble as he was growing up. Folks connected his name withe outlaw's, John Westley Hardin. A hardin was a Hardin. My John was younger than Wes by about 2 years, and may have looked alot like Wes too. My John W. felt doomed, as long as he stayed in Texas. About 1880 John William went to Chicago,Ill. by one of the first new trains. He met a young gal named Anna Vass(from Kentucky)who was studying business courses. She wanted to be a secretary. Anna was 18 years old then, and unmarried. I believe she had family living in Chicago or nearby. As things go in life, the young couple fell in love. Anna's brother would escort her to meet John when the two got together.
John tried a couple of times in Chicago to marry Anna, but always was dogged by John Wesley Hardin "followers"with wanted posters. In 1883 the couple came by train out to California from Illinois, chaparoned by Anna's brother. Her brother was going to be a gold hunter, come hell or high water! John and Anna married using the surname of: Harder in San Francisco, Ca.,on Jan.13, 1883.Anna used Voss as her maiden name. John changed his middle initial to T.once he began living in California, with his new bride.

My husband descends from the Brown line that settled Kerrville and one of his lines married into this Griffin line. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can read previous posts at this archive link: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index/TXKERR/

In case you've subscribed to the digest, or missed the newest posts, The Kerr County Historical Society is asking you to donate your postcards to them.

"Please consider donating your postcard and photo collection to the Kerr County Historical Commission. This would be a tax deduction. See our web page at http://www.co.kerr.tx.us/historical/
"

And in case you missed the first referenced post from the maillist:

"Jennifer: Like you, my great-grandfather lived and worked at Morris Ranch. Morris Ranch was a training ranch for race horses and is in Gillespie County, not Kerr County. There was a store and a school in early 1900's, between
Kerrville and Fredericksburg, Texas. I have much information on this out of the way place if you contact me.
Maxine Page Powell
Kerrville, TX"

While I've taken the liberty to post their replies, I've left off contact information from this public board. Just check the archive for June 2008 at the link I first posted above.

If you don't want to donate your actual postcards, I'm sure they'd be thrilled with scanned copies, or digital copies.

Best of luck. It's a very interesting subject. Have you checked the census records for this ranch? Sometimes the census listed all the people who were housed there at the time, whether or not they actually lived there permanently. It could be fascinating reading.

Alexa

POW/MIA Korean War, Kerr Co. BUTLER

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Kerr County , Texas as his home of record.

Soldier: BILLY JOE BUTLER
Born: 1921
Date of loss: November 28, 1950

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 137 families in Texas that have not been located. There is one family from Kerr County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (77 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
I am replying to you because curiosity has gotten the best of me. I remember tracking a Ben Bogart or Bogard in Texas thru the 1850 census, while his parents Pryor and Perry Bogart still lived in Grayson County. Pryor Wallace married Captain John Hart. She was the mother of my great grandmother Roxcina Hart Watson Hardin.
John Hart had children by another wife. Those first group of children made it very hard on Pryor that she had not a marriage doccument to prove her marriage to John Hart Pryor was left with young children to raise and she married Perry Bogart who lived in the county in Texas. Their son was named Ben. He was about 15 years old in 1865. I followed him through the census years until he was 70 years old. He was widowed by then. You may be looking for his "grandson"?
if most certainly he migrated to Kerr County with the Hardin families.
It has been a while since I posted to these boards. It was many years before I joined Ancestry. com as a member.

Kerr County Obituaries

Detailed instructions for obtaining an obituary from the records at the Kerr Regional History Center can be found on the Kerr County TXGenWeb page
http://kerrco.vibobgen.com/KerrCountyObituaries.htm

The History Center has microfilm of obituaries dating back to the earliest newspapers. There are gaps in the early dates (due to loss of some newspaper issues before microfilming) but these records are indexed by a member of the Kerrville Genealogical Society so names can easily be found as long as a full name and approximate date are furnished.

The public library, Butt-Holdsworth Memorial Library, will handle mailing and cost for obtaining these obituaries (which is minimal).

Check the Kerr County TXGenWeb page for the abovementioned obituary information.

Shirley Webb,
County Coordinator for Kerr County TXGenWeb

Well, what a coincidence. Not if only your name were Blanche and you were 136 years old, we'd really be cooking!

Actually my HORTONs were born in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Jersey, settling in Pennsylvania in the 1800s. Blanche Horton married Wendell GEORGE and moved to New Jersey, Florida, and Texas, that I know of. She could have lived in other states, especially Mississippi and Louisiana since at least two of her children were in those states.

Any chance your HORTONs came from New England, New Jersey and Pennsylvania? Thanks for replying to my post.

Blanche C Horton married ? Wallace lived in Texas 1920s-1930s

I'm looking for my great grandmother Blanche C HORTON born 11 Sept 1871 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her first husband was Wendell GEORGE. They were married about 1888. They had at least 10 children with the vast majority of them dying in early infancy or childhood.

I've traced Blanche from Philadelphia to Newark, New Jersey in 1900. She gave birth to daughter Nellie GEORGE in 4 May 1904 in New Jersey. Then the family moved to the Pensacola area, Escambia County, Florida. Another daughter, Blanche GEORGE, was born there 2 Sept 1907. Her other known children were Dora M GEORGE, born 31 March 1890 but probably died as a child, Elmer E. GEORGE born 13 Nov 1892, son Charles GEORGE born Jan 1896, and Henry GEORGE born 17 Jan 1898.

I've traced Blanche C HORTON to Texas as Blanche C WALLACE in 1926 (a mention in her mother's obit, no exact location) and on the 1930 US Census in Kerrville, Kerr County, Texas. Although she is listed as married, no husband was listed. Just below Blanche C WALLACE on the census is Henry WALLACE and his wife Gertrude WALLACE, living nearby in a separate residence. Does anyone know if Henry would be Blanche's brother-in-law, her husband's brother, or his cousin?

I've also found Lester B WALLACE living not far away (in my estimation) from Blanche and the other WALLACEs. Lester is 50 years old, says he's married, but there's no wife.

Lee WALLACE, 62, says he's divorced and also lives in the same vicinity as Blanche and the other WALLACEs. There's also James H WALLACE who is in the VA Hospital in Kerrville. He says he's single. William WALLACE, 52, lives with his mother and others is also nearby, says he's single.

Anyone have any ideas? On my grandfather's marriage application (1923) he said his father's name was "James" but it was really Wendell, so I'm wondering if James was his step-father's name? Or the clerk just made a mistake. No surnames were given for his parents.

Any thoughts? Does anyone know the WALLACEs mentioned? If they don't belong with Blanche, I can eliminate them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know who the WALLACE people are, but the HORTONs include:

Daniel Horton, born Abt. 1791 in,MA; died 27 Jul 1871 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA. He married Elizabeth/Betsey Lewis born Abt. 1799 in,MA; died 06 Mar 1886 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA.

Children of Daniel Horton and Elizabeth/Betsey Lewis are:

Mary Elizabeth Horton, born Bet. 1824 - 1828 in,RI; married John W Warren; born Bet. 1821 - 1822 in,PA.
Lydia L Horton, born Abt. 1827 in,RI; died 03 Feb 1917 in Tacony, Philadelphia, PA; married Wendel H Whiteman; born Abt. 1821 in,PA; died Bet. 1910 - 1917 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA.
Elizabeth Horton, born Bet. 1828 - 1832 in,RI; married Lewis/Israel George; born Bet. 1828 - 1830 in,PA.
Daniel Horton, born Apr 1835 in Bridgeton, Cumberland, NJ; died 15 Dec 1900 in Middleton Twp, Bucks, PA; married Lucy Ann Crissey.

Daniel Horton, born Apr 1835 in Bridgeton, Cumberland, NJ; died 15 Dec 1900 in Middleton Twp, Bucks, PA. He was the son of Daniel Horton and Elizabeth/Betsey Lewis. He married Lucy Ann Crissey/Crissy.

Children of Daniel Horton and Lucy Crissey/Crissy are:

Blanche C Horton, born 11 Sep 1871 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA.
John Horton, born Apr 1873 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA.
Frank William Horton, born 01 Mar 1875 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA; died Aug 1955 in Sterling, Whiteside, IL; married Ida Irene Huffer Abt. 1899.
Mary Elizabeth Horton, born 20 Mar 1878 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA; died 21 Jul 1961 in Pensacola, Escambia, FL; married William Edward Myers 1895; born 10 Oct 1872 in NJ; died 15 Mar 1967 in Pensacola Escambia FL.

Of the above children, my closest direct ancestor is Blanche C Horton, who married Wendell George about 1888, had at least 10 children (at least five died as infants or in childhood), the family moved to Pensacola, Florida between 1904 and 1907. Blanche married someone named WALLACE sometime after that.

The only other possible clue I have is "James" written on my grandparents' marriage application. No surname is listed but "James" is written where the father's name should have been. I'm wondering if he simply said his step-father's name and the clerk thought it was his father.

That's all I have except for Lucy Crissy Horton's obit that names my grandmother as "Mrs. Blanche Wallace of Texas" and the 1930 census where Blanche C Wallace was living in Kerrville, listed as married but no husband with her.

The children of Blanche C Horton and Wendell George are:
Dora M George b 31 Mar 1890, Philadelphia, PA (died before 1900 census)
Elmer E George b 13 Nov 1892, Philadelphia, PA
Charles George b Jan 1896, Pennsylvania
Henry W George b 17 Jan 1898, Newark, Essex, New Jersey
Nellie George b 4 May 1904 (assumed), Newark, Essex, New Jersey
Blanche George b 2 Sept 1907, Pensacola, Escambia, Florida

Earlyist Horton is 1722 in PA. That branch went to NC, then TN, then AL, then TX. Earliest Wallace is 1790 in NC, then TN, then MS, then TX. My father and mother met and married here in Titus County, TX. I have an extensive data base and I'm amazed I don't have your family in it.
David

Hi, I have a family document stating the town Bonham, and a long lost uncle sent a lady to say Hi from Bonham Texas, this document was written in 1889, Our Charles Thomas Bain/Bean left home at a young age, his father told him to settle down , and he did not want to hear of it and took off, It is said he left on a ship in Saint Andrews Canada, and years later sold it. every few years someone would come in town saying that he said Hi, Our last name was changed from McBean to Bean then Bain. It is pressumed that Thomas Bean used his middle name which is named after his Mother's maiden name. Our family was going to send a notice that we were the family but we had no proof, so they let it go. I m not interested in any money either, just want to know the truth, and seeing as in how no family can properly claim him from the United States and my relatives passed down a document from before 1900's. I am going to continue to find the truth of my family and the truth of Thomas Bean's family whomever they might be.

Do you know his date of death? If so, there's a chance there may have been an obituary published. I don't remember how far back the microfilmed Kerrville papers go, but I do know it was pretty early.

Failing that, there may be a death record on file at the county courthouse. I don't know Kerr county's policy about access to death records older than 50 years, but this, too, is worth a try.

You might contact the Kerr County volunteer for Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness (http://www.raogk.org/texas6.htm)and see if they can find anything for you.

Good luck!
