I am researching my great - great - great grandfather, Lewis Gardner, a gunfighter and horse trader, rumored through family lore to be a horse thief and a bigamist, described as a "bad man". He was born in South Carolina, lived in Georgia and Mississippi, and it is said he killed a man and went to Texas. He lived in Houston County, it is said he was in Brownsville, Texas, and eventually he spent his "last years in Johnson County", according to one of his sons.
He died somewhere between 1870 and 1890.....most say about 1879, but others say in the 1880s....
Mystery surrounds him.
Does anyone have news articles from Johnson County or record of a man named Lewis Gardner who was living and possibly died in Johnson County, Texas between 1875 to 1885?
