Not related! This will probably add to your confusion? Online death certificate for Jim Crofford (27 Feb 1860 - 16 Feb 1942). Father identified as Tom Crofford of Alabama. Mother was unknown to informant, Archie Crofford-son. Methinks the key to this mystery is Hal Crofford (25 Jul 1895) but there is no online death certificate. Alice was not his mother 'cause Jim Crofford married her about 1901. Hal was enumerated, twice, in 1900 Houston-Precinct 1-District 14-Page 28 (with father) and Precinct 6-District 23-Page 16 (with granny: Mary Weeks). There it is!!!

This is no help on John's first wife but in regards to the children. Lena May Rogers & Roscoe Rogers are the children of his brother, Henry. Roscoe's full name is Roscoe Conklin Rogers, my grandfather. At his time I'm not quite sure how they ended up with John.

Just ran across this posting and wondered if you had any info in regards to William Carroll, Stephen Jr and Lucretia brother Peyton. He was my gggg grandfather. He died in La in 1853. Some of his children moved to Texas and lived with their grandmother Elizabeth and some of their uncles. I am trying to find out where in La they might have been buried. Peyton's wife Nancy was already dead by 1853 also. Stephen Jr was given guardian ship of the minor children, ie my ggg grandmother Susan and several others. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Deborah,

I am descended, I believe, from John Samuel Langston and Margaret Josephine Kinman. According to my information, they married about 1857 in Crockett, Houston County, Texas. They had three children: James, Americus M., and Nettie (Jeanette) who was born aabt. 1876. She married Cyrus Brohier Parks in Crockett 13 Feb. 1889. There was one child, my father Sol Minchen Parks born 14 Mar 1905. I believe that there are several Langston relatives still in the Crockett area, but I am not in touch with any of them.

Sue Lilley
sue.lilley@hotmail.com

Hello: Houston County Historical has a couple of history books for sale & a database with over family 400 listed in the Box family. hchc@co.houston.tx.co. 936-545-3255 ext. 238

30. JOHN ASBERRY4 BOX (JOHN MORRIS3, ROBERT ALLEN2, ROBERT1) was born 11 Jan 1805. He married LETTICE LOU TRAP JONES 30 Dec 1827.
BOX FAMILY IN EAST TX
John Box original Land Grant State of Joahuila & TX, dated July 3, 1835, one league, #1, a map enclosed of area now known as Kennard, TX. 1969 Another source: John Box League on the waters of Cochino Bayou about (18) eighteen miles east of Crockett, #2.
A fort was the first building by this Box family near the Neches River to protect the group of fifty-two men, women and children, #3 from the Indians and the elements. The original forest was practically void of all undergrowth and the pine tree grew to immense proportions, some of them were fifty inches in diameter and from seventy to eighty feet to the first limbs. The towering branches entwist and entwine to keep all sunlight out also much moisture, in fact, a Heaven made roof. The ground was a carpet with pine needles of many centuries. Colonists, animals and Indians could walk through the forest silently on the heavy carpet of pine needles. This virgin forest remained in TX until late 1880.
There were ten men with the name BOX with Spanish Land Grants, #5 and they had to spend a week on one Grant, then another, until they could find a sight for building a home for each. They worked out of the Fort near the Neches River to accomplish this. One family story, quote: "TX was a wild State and Grand-Pa's house was built with-port-holes in order to defend themselves from the Indians". Box-Fort had many frightening experiences with the Indians, but we remember only one death. Arriving in TX in Nov. 1834 the fall of the year a fire duty was planting gardens in the spring and field of corn. When the corn was ready for table use the thirty-year-old John Asbery Box (son of John M. Box, a brother of Stephen F. Box and cousin of John Andrew Box, my ancestor) and a friend crossed a ravine to gather corn, an Indian killed the friend. John Asbery Box, made an escape in the tall grass and behind a giant tree, looking back he saw the Indians scalp his friend, he did not try to return to the Fort until dusk. After dark a group brought the dead man into the Fort where he was buried. A religious service was needed. However all Colonist took on oath of allegiance to receive a Spanish Land Grant, the nearest church, Catholic, was over forty miles East near Old Stone Fort in Nacogdoches. Also the religion from the United States, Protestant, was frowned on. The thirty-three year old John Andrew Box was elected to conduct services or preach. I do not know if he had training in AL, he did marry and had four children, then his wife died and a guardian of minor children in Orphan Court in Blount County AL is recorded. Perhaps this sad experience prompted John Box to conduct religious services for the large group within the Fort. The tabernacle the spreading branches of trees, their pews the spring seats from wagons and grass and pine needles. We were told after his father Stephen F.Box moved on his Land Grant Southwest of Crockett. John Box preached from his home near the Neches River to his father's where the Orphan children lived, a distance of over twenty miles. We know John Box held services in Crockett when there were only two families living in the two sites; this made him the first Circuit Rider in Crockett TX, Houston County.
Houston Co. Historical is in the process of getting the Cemetery Book on Excell database. If you can send last, first names, maiden & first names of females I will check what we have done so far. hchc@co.houston.tx.us
Walker # 1 Cemetery From SH 7 in Ratcliff, go 3.1 miles N-E on CR 1155. At Mt. Vernon Church, turn left onto Forest Service Rd. #560 and go 2.0 miles to Forest Service Rd. #511. Turn left onto Forest Service Rd. #511 and go 0.2 mile NW. At this point, there will be a field with an old log barn and collapsed house on the W side of road. Go through a gate on W side of road and walk approx. 650 ft. NW to wooded hill overlooking the Sikes Creek Bottom. Cemetery is partly fenced and very overgrown. This cemetery is highly endangered. It is not map feature and is located on private property. There are no cemetery signs posted. The cemetery is partly fenced, and it is not maintained. Very little evidence of this cemetery remains. The majority of the cemetery features are missing. During this survey, only one broken marble headstone and associated footstone were observed. At least three possible fieldstone markers were also observed. Two of the fieldstones are located outside the fenced enclosure and one is within. It is very likely that the cemetery extends beyond the fenced enclosure. Heavy vegetation and recently fallen trees may hide some markers.
Re: Question - Walker Cemetery (HoCo Cem Book) GRAHAM -BLALOCK

The page reference you gave (p.402) piqued my interest when I looked for Walker Cemetery in the HC Cemeteries 3rd Ed., published in 1987, and in the Supplement to the 3rd Ed., published in 1998. It seems that the Walker Cemetery is on p. 402 in the HC Cemeteries Book No. II., published much earlier. The info on Walker Cemetery, p. 927 in the 3rd Ed., states that the cemetery had “been abandoned for years and very little signs of it remain, with the exception of a few broken tombstones”. The information in the 3rd ed. was partly what had been in the 2nd, but did contain some new bits - i.e, some inscriptions on markers, and corrected the listing following Blalock: the names Evans, Goldman, and Gardner were surnames, not Blalock first names, as was indicated by the indentions in the Book II. Nothing new on Ida Blalock, however. The Supplement to the 3rd Ed.,1998, p. 328-9, gives newer directions to the cemetery, and apparently a member of the Historical Commission “gathered the information about this cemetery in 1998,” and the name and phone number of the then caretaker of the cemetery was given. In this information, there is no mention of the Blalock marker or any of the old markers. Apparently, the cemetery had been put to use again, as all the markers listed are of much more recent vintage. Suggest you contact the HC Historical Commission to see if they have any more recent info on this cemetery, as they are involved in a project to locate and mark old cemeteries.

CASTILLO & Renteria families of Houston, TX

I am interested in any information related to an ENCARNACION CASTILLO. His full name may have been JUAN ENCARNACION CASTILLO. I don't know much about him other than our oral family history which claims that he was born either in Mexico or Spain and probably died in Texas or Louisiana. It is also claimed that he owned land in Louisiana. At some point he had a child with a woman named CARLOTA TELLEZ RENTERIA. Carlota had a long term, off-and-on relationship with SABINO RENTERIA. Many of the children of SABINO and Carlota were close with this CASTILLO family line, especially their son DAMACIO RENTERIA. Other half-siblings were Tomasa, Jesusa "Susie" and Natalia, all Renterias. It is possible that ENCARNACION had other children and/or other wives as well.

EZEQUIEL CASTILLO, Sr. is the only child I am aware of ENCARNACION and Carlota having together. However, Ezequiel may have been adopted since his Y-DNA is haplogroup O (Southeast Asian) and, so far, does not seem to fit with any other CASTILLO families who have had DNA testing done!

Encarnacion CASTILLO b. Mexico or Spain
d. Texas or Louisiana
Ezequiel CASTILLO, Sr., b. 29 FEB 1896 in Mexico/TX
d. 20 OCT 1971 in CA
Ezequiel m. Rebeca Barrera/Guajardo
Ezequiel and Rebeca had the following children:
Eduardo CASTILLO b. 4 JUL 1920
Joel CASTILLO b. 29 MAY 1923
Ruben Barrera CASTILLO b. 3 AUG 1925
Rudolfo Valentino CASTILLO b. 27 DEC 1927
Lorene Alice CASTILLO b. 27 MAR 1929
Edmundo Mario CASTILLO b. 28 NOV 1933
Ezequiel CASTILLO, Jr. b. 2 SEP 1934
Francisco Humberto CASTILLO
Raquel CASTILLO
Maria Luisa CASTILLO

All the children listed above were born in Houston, TX. However, there is much CASTILLO family connection to the San Antonio area as well. They all lived in Houston until the 1950s when they moved to Los Angeles, CA.

The RootsWeb.com site lists an Edmond and an ENCARNACION CASTILLO who owned land in the Hatchitoches parish of Sabine County, LA prior to 1908 and more specifically about 1889. Apparently Edmond owned 70.6 acres about 1853 while ENCARNACION owned 160+/- acres about 1889. Are there any Castillo's out there who descend from the Edmond or ENCARNACION CASTILLO mentioned here?

Are you a CASTILLO with a RENTERIA connection in your family? If so, please contact me.

I would appreciate any help, tips or leads regarding any of the individuals listed above.

Please e-mail: mccollum211@msn.com

I use the 1870 census to locate those slave owners and then search for their surname in the same location and select Race as Black/mullato.

I saw this article from the Friday July 18, 1890 edition of the Crockett Courier Newspaper that may be of interest to those researching the McCombs and Jones families.
"N.B. McCombs reported that the census enumerator failed to count his family of 6, 4 in the family of Billy McComs, and 3 in the B.F. Jones family. The editor said he hoped W.J. Harkins would look into this."

Are you a descendant? John Asbury Box was my great great great grandfather. I have some information on him but would like more. He came to Texas in 1838 from Tennessee where he married Lettice Lou Trap Jones but he was originally from South Carolina. The Box Family is prominent in Laurens, South Carolina. I have visited the Texas General Land Office in Austin, Texas and I have seen John Asbury Box's signature on land grants from the Mexican government when it controlled Texas. I found that John Asbury Box was an original Texas Ranger for a short time. He was among the first owners of land in Houston County. His brother signed the Declaration of Secession for Texas in 1861. He also had a brother and nephews who fought in the Battle of San Jacinto and their names are engraved on the monument.
