surname LECIL 1930
1930 Haskell Co census shows household of what appears to be Samuel L. Lecil, wife Jewel, and young daughter Modena L. Lecil. I cannot find these people, any of them, again. I am wondering if the surname is spelled correctly, or has it been translated incorrectly? Did they perhaps change the spelling of their name? Does anyone know what happened to these people, any of them? I would believe that it is possible for the child Modena L. Lecil to still be living but I cannot find her in any marriage records. Nor can I find her parents in any death records. Can anyone help locate these people, in ANY further records?

MATURA Obituary

Obituary to John Matura
Weimar Mercury 19.December 1898

Defending His Mother and a Young Man Kills His Brother

"Schulenburg, Tex., Dec. 16. - The Farm of Andrew Huebner, located five miles northeast of Schulenburg, was the scene of a tragedy in which two men, Vincent Krobot and John Matura, met death at 10 o`clock last night.
Mrs. Matura, widow, was a tenant on the Huebner farm, and with her lived her two sons, John Matura, aged agout 28 years, and Clemens Matura, aged about 26 years.
John Matura and Vincent Krobot had rented some farming land a few miles west of Schulenburg and were preparing to cultivate it next year. Together they went fo Mrs. Matura´s household effects belonging to John Matura. A dispute arose between Mrs. Matura and her son John in regard to the ownership of some of the effects, which culminated in the killing.
Clemens Matura came to town to notify the officers of the killing. To the justice of the peace he said that when the dispute arose between his mother and brother, Krobot took the part of the son and struck his mother, that he, Clemens, then interfered to protect his mother. Krobot and John Matura both attacked him, the former with a pitchfork and the latter with an ax, when he shot and killed both of them with a pistol. Krobot was shot through the heart and John Matura through the heat, the ball entering the left lobe of the brain.
Clemens Matura came to town this morning for coffins for the dead men. During the day a warrant was issued for his arrest.
The Matura´s are Moravians and came here from their
mother country about three years ago.
Vincent Krobot was also a Moravian and came to this country
three or four years ago. He was about 30 years old, a laborer, and had a wife and four or five children in the old country, whom he expected to join him here next year.
John Matura, deceased, and his brother Clemens Matura, the slayer, were unmarried.
POW/MIA Korean War, Haskell Co. BROWN

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Haskell County , Texas as his home of record.

Soldier: ERA HOLLIS BROWN
Born: July 15, 1919. Caucasian
Date of loss: November 15, 1950, KIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 137 families in Texas that have not been located. There is one family from Haskell County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (77 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Descendants of ELIAS F. SOSEBEE

Generation No. 1

1. ELIAS F.3 SOSEBEE (SAMPSON2, JOB1) was born November 22, 1817 in SPARTANBURG,SOUTH CAROLINA, and died November 22, 1901 in WOLF CITY, TEXAS. He married (1) SARAH M. SPENCER January 20, 1841 in HABERSHAM CO GEORGIA, daughter of JAMES SPENCER and SARAH ABBOTT. She was born January 20, 1817 in GEORGIA, and died September 07, 1861. He married (2) MARY JANE SHERIDAN July 01, 1862 in GEORGIA, daughter of JOHN SHERIDAN and CATHERINE HUEY. She was born September 19, 1840, and died June 24, 1880 in HARRISON, ARKANSAS.

Notes for ELIAS F. SOSEBEE:
The Sosebee Odyssey, Volume 2:

The Following letter was written by Elias Sosebee, the fourth child of Sampson Sosebee and his wife Elizabeth. Elias was born in Spartanburg in 1817 and was only five years old when the trip to Nacoochee took place. The letter belongs to Mary Ruth Cannon who is Elias' great-granddaughter. She graciously sent a copy of the letter which is in Elias' own handwriting. At the time the letter was written, Elias was eighty-three years old. He had been a Baptist preacher for most of his life, The letter is addressed to his son, Elias Erwin Sosebee in Arkansas. Rack, Graves, Weck and Neab are nicknames of other sons. Nevada and Cora are his daughters. The letter is typed exactly as it appears:

White County, Arkansas
November 12, 1897

To E. E. Sosebee and Marga Sosebee

Dear Children- these lines leave us all well. I presume that you have before now heard that Rack had gone to Texas. He left here on the 14th day of last October and settled in Wolf City in Fannin County where he is doing well. Graves and Nola White were married on the 6th day of July and on the 6th day of September started to Texas where at the last writing he had made $40.00.

Weck and Neab are in Loan Oak and will return home in about 3 weeks or a month when them and I will leave for Texas also. My dear children you know not how glad I would be to see you before we leave. Come if you can.

Weck, Neab and Graves all lived with Mr. White this year and them and Whites son run 62 acres of cotton and 44 acres in corn. All three of them sold to Mr. White.

Nevada gave birth to a fine baby girl not long since but it is dead...lived only one week. It died of Bold-Nerves. The rest is well. Johnson and Cora both present at this writing, Cora had another daughter born 23rd of August, all well.

Erwin tell Bro Smith, Bro Laster, Bro Johnson and others I would be glad to see them one time more. Read this to them and others.

On the first day of July Earl Spencers oldest child was taken with a fit about 2 O'clock in the afternoon and died at 9 O'clock next morning and was buried on the 3rd by side of Rack's Baby. This death almost parrilised every thing about the place but we must learn to sorrow not as those who have no hope.

Dear son you may think it is strange of my going to Texas but they have sent for me and promised to pay my way. I do not think because some retire from the ministry when the Boom of life begins to decay..that it is so with all...go into all the world is as forcable with me today as it was fifty years ago.

Evidence that my work is not yet done was manafested not long ago. Thirty miles west of here they came after me to preach a series of sermons on isolated subjects and there were 12 preachers present: one cambellite and one hard shell. The results of this labor was very gratifying to large congregations.

My dear children I must close
Yours as ever,
Elias Sosebee

BANKS COUNTY, GA - 1864 Census Georgia Militia
1864 Census for the Re-Organization of the Georgia Militia
BANKS COUNTY, GEORGIA
Background note: Governor Joseph Brown insisted the
State needed protection for women, children, elderly
and invalids living home during the War. Everytime
State troops were formed they were taken into the CSA.
Since there was no homefront protection, Governor Brown
and the Georgia Legislature issued an order for a
statewide census which would enable a reorganization of
the State Militia. White Males of age 16 and not over
60 were to be counted along with exact age, occupation
and place of birth.

SOSEBEE, Elias, 46 yrs. 1 mo., Farmer, Minister, b. F. D.
By R. C. Sosebee

In the year of 1918, along about the month of June, a caravan of fourcovered wagons left Monday, Knox County, Texas. In these four wagonsthere were four families. Three of these families were on their wayto Arkansas. In one wagon was Mr. And Mrs. Bee Wyatt and their threechildren. As the wagon train, if you could call it that, passedthrough Okla., the Wyatt family stopped off. The other three familiesproceded on their way.
In one of these wagons was Arfastus Benevis Sosebee, his wife, Mable, and children, Bill, Aubrey, Buna, Katie, Leland, Garland and Dewitt.Another wagon contained Erastus Gustavus Sosebee, his wife Lantie Mae,children, Horace, Ollie, May, Sylvia, Oma, Vetus and Homer. The otherfamily was Servetus Ford Sosebee and his wife Alice. Now some ofthese namesmight sound like outlaws, but really they were pretty goodpeople, for these were my grandfather and his two brothers. They arrived in Greenwood, Arkansas, in August of 1918. My father,Horace, registered for the draft there on Aug. 24, 1918.
After a fewdays' stay there in Greenwood, where they had found some more Sosebees(cousins), they resumed their journey.
They came to Scranton, crossedthe Arkansas river on a ferry boat at Morrisons Bluff, and settled inthe Jamestown area. My father recenlty had the opportunity of crossinthe new Arkansas river bridge at about the same site where he hadcrossed by ferry so many years earlier. He recalls that back in 1918the bottoms were full of corn. Not much farming in that area
nowsince the dam has been built.
My father's family lived iin the Hartman area for some time where theypicked cotton. My gradfater also had another sister at Hartman. Mrs.John Johnson. My father remembers how "Uncle John" would get up at 2aa.m. every morning, go to Hartman, and meet the train in order to getthe paper. On this night, Nov 11 a.m. Uncle John came by to tell mygrandfather's family the good news about World War 1 being over.
The next year my father's family moved to the Tom Hurst farm north ofCoal Hill. Would you believe Tom Hurst was my wifes grandfather?Anyway the next year the Sosebees moved to the Whipporwill community. There my father met my mother, Miss Stella Hall, daughter of James E."Bud" and Louisa Hall. My mother was only 15 years old at the time, however my father began to curt her, and three years later, when shewas 18, they were married, Nov. 18, 1923, in the home where my fatherand mother now lives.
Yes, next Tuesday, Nov, 18, 1980, my father and mother will have their57th wedding anniversary. I wish to take this opportunity tocongratulate them and give them my love and best wishes. I'm sureglad one of those wagons didn't break down on their way from Texas toArkansas. If it had, I might not be here tonight to write thiscolumn. I might add if I misspelled any of these names I'm sorry, also if Ileft anyone out of those wagons it is because it is a little hard to remember things which happened over 60 years ago, and I had to getthis information from my father as he remembered these happenings. Two of these families had other children which were born after theyarrived in Arkansas.

PAGE: R. C.
I cannot provide you with an obituary for Theron Gilliam Cahill, but I did through research find information that would have appeared on an obituary. According to one researcher at One World Tree, his wife's name was Mildren Bounds. However, I believe her name was Mildred. That is what appears on the 1930 census of Haskell County, Texas. It is also the name that appears on the transcription of Willow Cemetery in Haskell County, Texas.

The site at One World Tree also has that his parents were Della Lee Gilliam and Cromwell Cahill. The 1900 census record of Sutton County, Texas, indicates that his first name was Thomas, so I presume he was named after Thomas Cromwell. In 1900 Thomas and Della are living with her parents, Miniard and Charlotte Gilliam. In 1910 their children Exa Della and Theron Gilliam Cahill are living with her parents in Haskell County, Texas. In 1920, Thomas Cromwell (T C) Cahill is also living with his in-laws in Haskell County.

Thomas Cromwell Cahill's father was Timothy Cahill. He is on the 1880 census of Bell County, Texas. Timothy's parents were Pierce and Alice Cahill They are in Lincoln County, N.C. in 1850 and 1860

I also found the obituary for Theron Gerald Cahill, the son of Theron Gilliam Cahill. I can provide you with that if you are interested.

Theron Gilliam Cahill's sister, Exa Della Cahill, married Jesse Hiram Campbell. They are found on the 1930 census of Wichita County, Texas.

Dewey died in Knox County in 1940 and Lillian died in Dickens County in 1953.

I am also trying to find out if the above couple had any children.

I am looking for the parents of this person. He is found on the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census in Texas. I have not, yet, found the 1930 census record. According to his death certificate, he was born 3 July 1874 in Martha [sic], Georgia. He died 14 Dec 1850 in Mineral Wells, Texas and buried in Haskell County, Texas. Census records say that both of his parents were born in Georgia.

Robert married Nancy Finley, daughter of N. E. Finley and Ora Coleman (both born in Mississippi) about 1898-1899. Nancy was born 9 April 1881 in Mississippi, died 20 Oct 1850 in Mineral Wells, Texas, and is also buried in Haskell County, Texas

Robert and Nancy had at least three children: Emory, born about July 1899 in Texas; Calla Mae, born 23 Feb 1901 in Bosque County, Texas; and Robert Raul, born 24 Jun 1904 in Bosque County, Texas

Calla Mae married an unknown (to me) Gideon. She died 18 Feb 1963 in Mineral Wells, Texas, and is buried Haskell County, Texas as well.

Robert Raul died 20 Jan 1966 in Garland, Texas, and is buried in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Dallas, Texas.

Except for census records, I have no further information on Emory.
