Shirley, I'm Linda's Mom. I may be able to answer some of your questions about your family, but most of my knowledge is anecdotal. Who was your grandmother? Obviously one of the Bishop girls (there was only one Bishop son - Robert.) My Mother passed a few of her memories of her Bishop relatives to me - will be happy to tell you what I can. Please send your phone number - typing is hard on the arthritic fingers.

Elaine

i

Thank you Linda for responding. I put all this together by guessing. I would like to comfirm that Bertie and Ebbie were sisters. I have been searching for so many years. My grandmother is one of Ebbie daughters. When I would ask my grandmother questions about her childhood she never really talk about it. She did say her mother was adopted and had a sister but thought she had died. My mother was named after Ebbie Edwina and when she became very ill I wanted to try and get the answer so I could tell her before she died. Unfortunately she passed in November. On my tree I had all this information on there but I have been waiting for comfirmation. When I read your email I started to cry. The day my mother passed we were all there with her. She was in a coma state but I ask her to tell my grandmother to send me help on the family tree. In December I went to the Texas Library downtown and meet a wonderful women who helped me and now you. My grandmother must be listening. Thank you for all the information. I guess if everything is comfirmed, you and I are distant cousins. Hope to hear from you soon.

Shirley

Bertie Kerr's full name was Egbertis Armistead Kerr, named for Egbert Armistead. She's my great-grandmother. She died 2 Dec 1937 and is buried in Rosewood Cemetery in Houston. She had three children: Marvin Elisha, Mattie Laura, and Porter. She and Elisha Floyd Edwards divorced about 1925, when my grandmother was 15, and she went to Houston to live with Byron Cushman, a traveling salesman.

Mattie A.E. Magee and John Thomas Kerr were her parents. Mattie's parents were Phillip T. Magee and Rebecca Driskill, who were married 2 Aug 1850 in Grimes County, TX. Her grandparents were Nehemiah Magee and Martha C. Smith, married 15 Sep 1815 in Marion County, MS.

J.T.'s parents were Augustus Thomson Kerr and Pency Antoinette Moore Walden (2nd marriage for her), married 1 Dec 1836 in Autauga County, AL. A.T.'s parents were Hugh P. Kerr, Jr. and Lucy Fontaine Thomson, married 27 Feb 1806 in Richmond County, GA. Hugh and Lucy were responsible for settling Union Hill, which now just has a mile marker to commemorate it.

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/10807635/person/158018663/pho...

Hope this helps,
Linda

Thanks! Your tree needs a correction. The daughter "Malia" under Margaret G. is misplaced. She was actually Melissa Victoria Leigh, second wife of W. W. They wed 11 Dec 1889 in grimes and had two daughters: Arthemize Oliphant (12 Nov 1891 - 19 Jan 1935) and Maratite (ca. May 1893). Her death certificate online https://familysearch.org/ and has names of parents.

I tend to agrees with you about Louisiana. Kentucky and/or Tennessee are other options that seem reasonable. Also, if W. W. Hunter (Jr.?) was born in 1848, then a child of 2 or 12 should show up in the census of 1850 or 1860 for a "Hunter family". I have been following that logic to look for the Hunter born in 1848 hoping that it would lead to a family that might "fit".
Good hunting for you in your genealogy!
Richard

I'm not related, but did you review the 21 May 2008 response from bratlinda47? Believe it is applicable? W. W. Hunter wed M. G. Lee, 3 Mar 1871 in San Jacinto, TX. Perhaps a map of Texas Counties would enhance your research? Grimes is bordered on the East by Walker and Montgomery. Madison is North of Grimes and Waller is on the Southern border. Brazos and Washington Counties join Grimes' Western border. San Jacinto in on the Eastern border of Walker and Montgomery.
I am a grandson from W. D. Hunter. I cannot find ANY good information on where the Hunter's came from. The census info seems inconclusive. Seems like one of the descendants should have some kind of info on origin, but first have to find the descendants!

I will take a look at your tree.

Where are you located? I am in Oregon.

Yes, I am always researching the Hunters from the area. From my original post:

In researching my family I have learned that my ancester Ida Henderson married Willard Dean Hunter in Grimes in 1897.

Ida's mother was Virginia Ann Viser who married a Mashall Henderson. Virginias sister was Mary Viser who married Joseph F. Barlow. Virginia died young, after having only 2 daughters. You can view my tree on Ancestry.com, its named Oltman/Dixey.

Hi, Nice to hear from you. I do not have a picture of James A Mosley...when I posted that message I was hoping to find someone who did. I have lots of pictures (no names on them) that I believe a lot of them to be of Mosleys. My grandmother was a sister to Nora Spann. I have some information on the Carter family. I remember going to Iola and visiting Doye and Willie Mae. My mother and Doyle were cousins. I live near Grimes County and there are still Carters living there. I do not know the origin of Mosley, if you let me know what info you need I may can help. I only have the Carter line as far back as Davidson Carter who married Sally Coldiron and were the parents of Joseph Edward Carter.

Hope this helps

Benjamin's wife, Catherine McCullough Rigby, is how I am related to Corner family. Mary Vaughn Corner was the maternal grandmother to Catherine McCullough Rigby. Mary V. Corner came to Texas as a widow lady and was granted a league of land. 6 of her children also received land grants from the Mexican govt. 3 of her children married into the McCullough family. Can you tell me how you are aware that Mary V. Corner was born in North Carolina and if so, what county in NC? Thank you! Gina

I am not a Kennard or a Loud. However, my parents have the farm just next to the land that the Kennards and Louds owned, much of which is still owned by descendants. I own, in fact, one of the several 20-acre tracts that was part of the Loud/Kennard/Carter "estate" of years ago. (There are also Kenneys, Dicksons, Hightowers, Reddricks, Robersons, Sampsons, and others who are probably all part of this extended family.)

There are problems with your posting. Private citizens cannot create social security numbers. The SSAN is unique and controlled by the government. If you value your credit rating, guard yours religiously. Prior to 1973, the first three digits denoted where a person lived when the number was issued. Afterwards, the first three digits based on zip code of the person's mailing address. The fact that he's buried in a veteran's gravesite indicate there were military records at time of death. When were those records destroyed? If he died violently, there was probably an investigation by the local authorities? Have you pursued that angle?

Desperately looking for ANY information on my great grandfather Henry Grimes. I'm looking on behalf of my grandfather Olivia G. Grimes who is on the search for any information on her father.

What I do know:

-Henry Grimes was born around 1888 in either Texas or Georgia. He was married twice, if not three times. He married Ouida Mae Simpler in 1941 in Florida. He enlisted in Georgia and partcipated (in some way) in WWI. He died April 6th 1943 and is buried in Barrancas National Cementary in Pensacola, Florida.

-My grandmother says he was shot to death on their front porch by her grandfather Shelby Simpler (1901 AL- 1967 FL) in Escambia County, Florida.

-His death certificate lists his parents as Unknown.

-All of his military records were burned in a fire.

-His social security number was created by a relative several years after his death.

-My grandmother believes he was born in Georgia. His 1930 census lists his birthplace as Georgia and parents' birthplace as Texas. The 1935 Florida state census lists his birthplace as Texas.

If anyone has any information on Henry, please let me know.

Thanks,

Kayla Lamb Ferguson

Kaylaferguson7@gmail.com

Lol! I always have something to do, I just wish I had more time, but a girl has to sleep sometimes.
You will not find a birth cert. as Texas did not record many before 1903, and it was not made law, until much later.
I think Ebbie,s census records are enough to know she was born abt. 1886/88. On all 4 census, this is the age range. On the 1930 census it shows she had at least 7 children.
On her tombstone it states she was born July, 1, 1885. I think you would have better luck looking for an old newspaper during those yrs, that is if she was b. in Grimes Co.. On all the records I have seen, it states she was b. in Tx.

Ebbie was married to Charles Allen Bishop. vshe died 6-23-32 Harris Co. I have seen her birth as Jul 1, 1888 maybe 1886 just on other trees and on her death certificate Charles Allen put her birth as Jul 1 1876. I find that date hard to believe because she would have been 11 older then Charles Allen Bishop. Making her 35 having her first child. I will look for her birth date while at the library. I feel like you do that this is headed in the right direction. I will email both of you when I confirm this information. Again, thank you so much. I do have two other members on my tree if you get bored and need something to do. Lol..

I’m not related to any member of this family.

1940 is the last available census at this time.

TX Vital Records -
The Texas Vital Statistics law to register births and deaths was not passed until 1903. Texas was then and is now a dual registration state which means the local registrars retain a copy of all birth and death records for the events that take place within their jurisdiction and the state retains the original of all birth and death records for the entire State of Texas. However, the statutes for registering these events were not made mandatory until 1926. However, many local registrars did not adhere to the statutes until the late 1930’s or early 1940’s. This means some records reside only in the local registrars’ files and not with the State.

statement source -
Sherry Crawford
Group Manager
Request Processing
Vital Statistics Unit
(888) 963-7111, ext 6195

1870 -
Name: James Griffith
Age in 1870: 35
Birth Year: abt 1835
Birthplace: Ala
Home in 1870: Grimes, Texas
Race: White
Gender: Male
Post Office: Navasota

James Griffith 35, ALA
Isabella Griffith 30, ALA
John Griffith 11, TX
William Griffith 9, TX
James Griffith 4, TX

Since census records do not record the specificlocality or the specific DOB for individuals, WHAT are your sources for the complete DOB's of these family members???

Good afternoon. You are welcome from the both of us. You do need to do us a favor though. If you do find out that this is the connection, please post the info in this post for others who may be in the family. Those brick walls can be a pain to solve.

I was wondering if you had the marriage records for Bertie and Ebbie, and possibly the death records. Of course, it might list the adopted parents, but I am one of those that leave no rocks unturned.
Not sure if this John T. Kerr and Mattie/Martha Magee are the answer, but it is one of those rocks that need to be turned. Sometimes many rocks have to be turned before you find the right one, and sometimes it takes more than one rock to find the answer.
I would look for any Kerr deaths, especially before 1900 in Grimes Co. and possibly counties close. You might look for probate records of Kerr children. It might be that there could be records in Grimes Co. that show these children being placed with the families. Maybe a newspaper mentioning the death of the twin Kerr child. It also might mention the births in an old paper, being born.
Who was Ebbie married to? I did find a Charles Craig who died 15 Sep 1969 in Livingston, Polk, Texas, parents were Ebbie Kerr and William Henry Craig, he was b. 1912. I also found a Porter Edwards died 20 Mar 1929, in Harris Co. Tx, b. 1912, Tx. Parents were E.F. Edwards and Bertie Kerr. It states that Bertie Kerr was b. in Tx. I am so glad HL made a connection to the Magee side. That is very hard to do.
I am looking for burials right now, and if I find any good rocks, I will post them.

Acid reflux is an evil thing to deal with HL. You are in my T,s and P,s. My dear uncle dealt with that for years, so I do know your pain, and your many sleepless nights. I have dealt with it some, just enough to know the pain.
Thank you for putting these puzzle pieces together of these 2 little girls. Yes, Sometimes it just takes some good old fashioned luck, to go along with your Sherlock detective ways. That is what I call you, by the way.lol
I do think we my be on the right track with J. T. Kerr/Mattie Magee marriage. I am looking now to see if I can locate them somewhere in a cemetery.
