Maggie E. Day b. NC 1879 to Thomas & Nancy Brawley Day married "Jap" Jasper Presley 1894 and had 2 sons Fred & Cyril. They were in Grimes Co 1910 but I'm not finding them 1900. Maggie's brother was John Ceyfus Day and his firstborn Vivian was my grandmother. Vivian and Fred were both born 1897. We've thought she was born in Grimes or Montgomery Co but have not been able to find a record of her birth. Coming in the backdoor...since the family all seemed to stay nearby one another in those years, if I can find where in TX Fred was born I think I might have my answer as to where Vivian was born. Thank you, Sandra

Riley Thomas - Shiro/Bedias - history a farm/plantation

I'm looking for information on a Riley Thomas who I believe owned property north west of Shiro.

My father (CE Taylor) purchased this property back in the late 1950s from a McGillberry (SP?) who lived near Singleton. He was told that it had be owned by a Riley Thomas prior to that.

We are interested in the history of the land. We've had some very interesting stories told to us thought the years.

One is that there was a murder at the gate to this property, sometime in the early 1900's, apparently due to a lovers triangle. Of course the gate might be in a diffent location now than it was back them.

Also that the house that was on this property at one time was dismantled and moved to Huntsville possilbly in the 1940's.

One elderly gentleman visited back when I was a kid and was talking about attending a party at that house when he was a child. There is a number of Black (English) Walnut trees on the hill by where the old well was as well a the foundation to the fireplace. Though the years many many items from bottles to cast iron toy trains to mule shoes have been found in this area.

Also a black man who is now deceased and lived on some ajoining land said his family received property as a result of the breakup and distribution on this farm.

So was this a plantation at one time and if so how can find out more on its history.

It is on Mustang Road (sorry don't know the county road number) close to the Mustang cemetery.

Regards,
Ron Taylor

There is a stone in the Oakland Cemetery in Navasota, Grimes Co., Tx inscribed "MRS TOM CAMP". Either I forgot to copy birth and death date or there was none. Does anyone know if this is Martha Frances Coleman who married Thomas Camp in Grimes Co. 1858? Shall appreciate any information on the "Mrs. Tom Camp" who rests in Oakland Cemetery. If someone is visiting this cemetery, I would appreciate it if you will check on this tombstone. I believe it is Lot 14.

Would love to hear from others of this family, or of his brother, Napoleon B. Sikes' family, or if anyone knows more information about descendants of other siblings, such as Fletcher Sikes, Walter Brown Sikes (moved to Brazos County), Mary Emily Sikes (married J.D. Vernon). NB Sikes had a son named Walter A. Sikes, with daughter, Lois L. Sikes who married Delma R. Posey, so if anyone knows any Posey's they may be from this bunch.. Also was a William Leroy Sikes, son of NB Sikes. There was a Nancy Sikes b. 1850, a William W. Sikes b. 1852 and a John A. Sikes also that were sons of WIlliam Matthew Sikes, whose descendants I haven't been able to trace. If anyone knows about any of these folks feel free to pass this message on to them.

I am searching for my father's half brother. Joseph Olaf Christian, or perhaps his name was Olaf Joseph.. The last I found on him was that in 1920 at the age of 9 he was living with a family named Yumstex in Iola as a boarder, his father Joseph George Christian was living with Daniel Guerrant along with his little sister Susie Daphne, then in 1930 he was with his father Joseph Christian and his wife Claudia along with his sister named Susie Daphne in Iola. I have found Susie Daphne and know that she died in 1988, but have never been able to find Olaf. If any one in the Iola area knows what happened to him I would really appreciate
your help. Olaf and Daphne are the children of my Grandmother) Susie Brock McGowan) after she married Mr Christian.

I am looking for info on Julia Shaw, who was listed on the 1900 Grimes, Co. Census, married to Jessie Shaw, with four children. On the 1910 census Jessie is shown with only the 3 older children. They were my G Grandparents..I think she died shortly after the 1900 census, but can not find any information...Thanks..

I am conducting research for a Masonic paper on York Rite Masonry in Grimes County, and would like to find out information on George M. Patrick, and James L. Green.

Both of these gentlemen served as Grand High Priest of the Grand Royal Chapter of Texas.

Patrick is listed in the Handbook of Texas on line, but there is nothing on Green. I know Green passed away in April of 1867.

I would like to find out his birth information, place of burial, and see if a photo exists of him, as well as any anecdotal information of his Masonic or community activities.

I am also interested in any other Grimes County York Rite Masons, who fought for the Confederacy.

If you have any Masonic items that you would like help in identifying or no longer want, I would be happy to assist you identifying them or in giving them a good home at Jersualem Chapter No. 3 Raoyal Arch Masons, in Navasota.

J. William "Will" POOL and Martha Ann "Mattie" KING (m. 2nd Edward CLARK) -
J.W. POOL and M.A. KING were married in Grimes on 5 March 1890. Their children, Ida Ruth POOL b. 2 Dec 1893, and Joseph William POOL b. 22 Feb 1896, were born in Grimes county, as well. (Joseph William's WWI draft card says he was born in Anderson.)

We cannot find this family in 1900. Will POOl may have died by then, and Mattie may have remarried. (Her second husband was Edward CLARK, and they were married by 1904, when they had a daughter together. They had two daughters: Estelle and Jessie Pauline.)

By 1910, Edward and Martha CLARK are living in Montgomery county.

We are stuck at this generation, and would appreciate even the smallest tidbits.

Thanks.

While researching my family genealogy, I came across a comment about one of my ancestors that just intrigued me. Can anyone from Grimes County help to solve the puzzle?

Here's the quote: "Charles Rufus Long (1845-1940) died at the Davis Hotel, Bedias, Texas."

Was there a hotel in Bedias called the Davis Hotel??? Anyone have a photo of the Davis Hotel, any history about the hotel, or a story to share about how my relative died in the hotel? He was 95!!! So he probably just died a natural death. I just thought it was odd that his place of death was specified as the Davis Hotel.

Charles was the son of Jesse Galiton Long and Martha Louise King. Jesse and Martha both died in Grimes Co, TX, but I have not located their graves.

Thanks for your help! Robin Hopkins Kenney

1870 Grimes Co. census - sections missing?

Does anyone know if sections are missing from the 1870 Grimes County census, as they are in various other states and counties? We cannot find a number of Alabama and Georgia-born families who should be in this census -- including Thomas Camp, the VERY wealthy Grimes Co. planter Ira Malcolm Camp, and Colemans. They haven't been found in Brazil/Confederados records or ship records, so presumably they were still in Grimes County where they lived in 1860 & 1880.

In the Colemans' home county, Butler Co., AL, there are entire sections missing from the 1870 census with dozens of families, as if a ledger had pages lost or pages were skipped when microfilming was done.

Does anyone know if this "missing pages/sections" occurred in Grimes County's 1870 census as well?

-- Annie Crenshaw

Isaak Cleghorn marries Minnie M. Henderson in Grimes

I have recently learned that my Minnie M. Henderson married and Isaak D. Cleghorn in the 1890s. I have reason to believe that this couple had at least 5 sons, Lester Alvin, Wilie Fred, Marshall, Charles Marvin and Marion Verginus. They may have had more children.

I am not familiar with the Cleghorn family and am interested in any information that can be provided to help fill in some holes. Minnie's father was Marshall Henderson of which I have no knowledge either. Marshall married Ann Virginia Viser and after she died (1876) he remarried twice before, 2nd to a Lucy P. and 3rd to a Lizzie. It looks like Lizzie collect his Confederate pension since she survived him. I dont have a date of birth or death for him either.

I can fill in particulars for Minnie, her mother and her mother's side of the family which is where I connect to this family. Minnies mother was a Viser and her grandmother was a Smither of Madison/Walker areas.

I am searching for any information on my gg uncle Foster Elone Moore. He was living in Navasota at the time of his death. I'm not sure of the year, but it was before his sister, Nancy Alva Moore Dyess, died in 1968. He reportedly ran a liquor store and was apparently well-liked by the community because when my great grandmother went to make funeral arrangements, she discovered people of the community had taken up a collection to give him a decent burial. He never married, and apparently was a wanderer. I have not been able to find a record of his death, place of burial, nothing. It appears he never existed in the records after he is listed with his sister and brother-in-law in 1900 in Bell Co. He's listed as a laborer with a misspelled name - Moor. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Probate Record for John Fitzgibbons concerning William Fitzgibbons

I am first listing information found in the 1840 Citizens of Texas Vol. 1 Land Grants by Gifford White ,there is a Fitz Gibbons and a Nancy that state thier ages as 70 and 76. Fitz gibbons states his birth place as Virgina and Nancy states hers as Pennyslvania. I truly feel like this is the William Fitzgibbons(born abt 1784) and Nancy Whitaker( born abt 1780) that where married in Ouachita Parish,La. and migrated to Texas for the 1822 land grants.

I dont know who John Fitzgibbons mother is.Still searching for William Fitzgibbons first wife before he married Nancy Whitaker. There is a lot of questions with this group.

My mother found an Austin county probate record for William Fitzgibbons born 1829 in Bellville,Tx (who married Ann Amelia Van houten) ...It states:

Succession of John Fitzgibbons:Petition of Gustavus E Edwards to represent that John Fitzgibbons departed this life in 1831 leaving only one child named William who is about 8 years old.Robert Peebles, Esq. was appointed administrator of the succession of said John Fitzgibbons and guardian of William Fitzgibbons. Gustavus E Edwards has had the child since his father died and prays for appoint of gaurdian. 24 Sept 1837 signed ,Gustavus E Edwards, Robert Peebles and Crosby J Hudson. Bond of $5000 for guardianship by G E Edwards , J Cummings and L Kincheloe 25 Sept 1837 J B Johnson , Probate Court Clerk.
Also cannot find any info on William A. Hunter (son), b. 1859 and lived with his parents, Martha and George Hunter in Grimes County. Don't think he ever married.

Hi, I hope by writing this, those who read this take it with sincerity. I'm in the process of possibly purchasing a home in Navasota. ITs very close to STONEHAM CEMETERY. I'm wishing to move the graves of my mother and brother to the Stoneham cemetery so that I can continue to visit them daily as I have for the past 2 1/2 years since the passing of my mother. This is very special to me, to the point if I can't move them then I myself won't move from my current location because I'm only about 5 miles from where my mom and brother are currently buried. Any information you can give me, to help me possibly move them to this cemetery I will be very greatful. I'm thinking I need to find the owner of the cemetery ?? I've visited this cemetery, and I can tell its in need of loving care.. this is something that I could provide. thanks for listening, and I welcome your help.

At the battle of the Glorieta Pass, March 28, 1862, in New Mexico, the Texas Mounted Volunteers suffered 47 casualties in a losing battle with the Colorado Volunteers. Among the dead was 2nd Cpl. J. K. Grissett, age 23, from Grimes Co.

It seems very likely that J.K. Grissett was related to Charles Gavin Gressett, who came to Grimes Co. from Mississippi.

(The Gressett and Grissett variations of the name are frequently seen and seem to be interchangeable until about 1890)

Does anybody know any more about J.K. They adopted my grandfather, Dominick Patrick Langton (1865-1924), who was born in New Orleans, while living in Anderson and renamed him Daniel Patrick Wheat. John J. is reported to have studied law in the offices of the offices or the Meacham firm. I would like additional information on John and Virginia while they resided in Anderson.

I am trying to do some research for a relative. He descends from Isaac Jackson KEELS, who was allegedly the 3rd burial in the Creek, TX Cemetery. I am under the belief that Creek, TX is/was located in Grimes County; correct? Where is/was it? My relative's grandmother, Dona Ellen "Donie" (KEELS) ASHWORTH was the daughter of Daniel Jackson KEELS & Martha SEWELL/SOWELL. Daniel Jackson KEELS, 1-5-1852 AL, was the son of Isaac Jackson & Mary (CROW) KEELS, both from SC. I located Isaac & Mary Keels on the 1850 Henry Co., AL census and found three other children: John (b. ca. 1842 SC), Mary (b. ca. 1844 SC) and Huldy J. (b. ca. 1848 SC). If anyone has any information about these Creek, TX natives (Donie referred to herself as a native of Creek, TX), please contact me.
I am helping a friend do her genealogy. She is the daughter of Albert Christopher Smith, son of Christopher Columbus Smith. I have her siblings and have Christopher Columbus's wife as Francis Texarkana Smith, daughter of Joshua and Sarah Patton Smith (LDS familysearch website). I found them on the 1900 Census of Grimes county, TX. Some of the birthdates are a little different that what you have. I have Christopher born on the 7th of May 1848 (LDS familysearch website) and the census has Lydia born in 1881, Sarah Ann's birthdate is 1 Oct 1884 and she died 26 Oct 1884 (LDS familysearch website), Zelma is shown to be born 1889 on census and Zora is shown 1896. I have Christopher Columbus Smith's father as William Dixon Smith born 29 Nov 1802 in AL and died 1860 in Liberty County, TX. and mother, Anne Stuckey. I am going to get with Louise to verify what she has. I know she would love to share information! Louise's husband has Parkinson's so she has her hands full taking care of him.

I could really use some help, hints, or tips for the Samuel L. Reed family. In the 1860 census of Walker County, the family was listed as S. L. Reed, age 34, teamster, and wife Narcissa(?) age 27, both born in LA, with children Sarah J., 8, Susan L., 6, and Samuel L., 3 -- all born in Texas. I believe the daughter Sarah J. was the Sarah Jane Reed that married Samuel A.J. Thomas of northern Grimes County (Prairie Plains) in 1866.

I can't find the family in the 1850 census (Texas or Louisiana) or any census after 1860. (Was he killed in the Civil War, and his widow remarried?)

Where did the family come from in Louisiana? Were they of the Reed clan that lived in or around Opelousa, St. Landry Parish. Where did the family go after 1860?

The 1850 census lists a George and Jane Reed, both 21, and both born in Louisiana, living the northern part of Grimes County. Was George possibily a brother of Samuel? And what happened to George and Jane Reed, since they aren't in the 1860 census?

Any help, and I do mean "any," would be most appreciated.

The mysterious Mrs. E, author

In _Five years in Texas: or, What you did not hear during the war from January 1861 to January 1866. A narrative of his travels, experiences and observations, in Texas and Mexico_ by Thomas North, he relates the story of Mrs. E, whose letter to her mother in the North is captured and because of the contents she and two friends are banished out of Texas. "Mrs. E" lived 100 miles from the coast on the Texas Central Railroad. "She had moved years before from the central part of the Old Empire State of the North [New York]. She was a lady of a decided literary turn of mind." After the war she was a "correspondent of first-class periodicals, weekly and monthly, at home and abroad, and is a leading poetess of "the Lone Star State."" She lived fairly near the railroad station [Navasota?] and on the east side of the Brazos River but within one day's wagon ride. The first names of her friends, who were like her own children, were Lewis and Emma (about age 25), brother and sister. Mrs. E. is banished in 1864, when she appeared to be about 40 years old, she is married, and she has a little daughter Kate, but the husband's name is never mentioned. Emma marries the Confederate escort to Matamoros, and after the war all return to Texas.

Does any or all of this sound familiar? Are there any noted female writers from Grimes County right after the war?

Vicki Betts
University of Texas at Tyler

I am partcularly interested in the group of families with whom my great-grandmother, Charity Brown, may have travelled. Her obit says that she came in 1880, settled in Oswego, then moved to Parsons in 1906. her son, Dennis Brown, married Elvira Mulkey. Elvira is shown in the 1880 census in Owsego as the niece of Robert and Louisa Walker (who also migrated from Texas but not necessarily with the group from Grimes County).

Benjamin Briggs went to Maryland stuying medicine. John C. in Tennesee in 1826 immigrated to Texas with brother in 1834.

Lots more data on these two brothers.
