Killis Bowen came to Grimes County as a young boy and slave. We don't know who he came with or exactly when he arrived. According to his stories he came with a large group of slaves, several of whom were his mother's relatives. Killis married a Venters first and later a Fagan, his son Pete was born of his first marriage. Killis migrated with the Fagans, Venters and others including Browns, Kinneys, Dedmans and Teagues to Parsons, Kansas after the Civil War. Killis could have come to Texas with Bowen or Stoneham slave owners. Would like to make contact with anyone researching any of these names--and/or Grimes County African Americans in general.
