I have information on the Singletary family. My father's grandfather (Francis Marion Barefield 1846-1928) was married to Ellen Singletary, one of the daughters of Robert Singletary and Reana (Garena) Patterson, whom you mentioned in your message above. I have a copy of Ellen Singletary Barefield's death certificate indicating that she died in Grimes County, Texas, while living in Bedias, Texas, (or nearby Iola, Texas). She was born on January 4, 1856, and she died on July 15, 1941, at age 85 years old. She was born in Mt. Enterprise, Texas. She is buried in Iola, Grimes County, Texas. She died of "chronic fibroid phlebitis as a result of pulmonary hemorrhages and dehydration." The name of the cemetery where she is buried is Lake Grove Cemetary between Iola, Texas and Singleton, Texas, in Grimes County. I also have a copy of the application of Ellen Singletary Barefield when she applied for her widow's military pension for Francis Marion Barefield. We know that Francis Marion Barefield (my great-grandfather) showed up in the land records in Texas in 1870 with two sisters (names unknown) and his widowed mother (name unknown) and they began purchasing land in Grimes County. It was after they arrived in Grimes County that Francis Marion Barefield married your Ellen Singletary. Together Francis Marion Barefield and Ellen Singletary Barefield had four children, Thomas Owen Barefield (my paternal grandfather), Garrett Barefield, Ida Mae Barefield, and Lula Alice Barefield. I have a list of all of their descendants, too, thanks not only to historical records, but my father's memories of them as he knew his aunts and uncle well having grown up in Grimes County himself. Most of the other information you have in your message coincides with the information we have on the Singletary family. I hope this additional information on Ellen Singletary helps.
On the flip side, should you have any information on Ellen Singletary's husband (Francis Marion Barefield), I would appreciate knowing it. My father and I have been searching records and trying to find out the names of Francis Marion Barefield's mother and father. We suspect FM's father's name is James Barefield because we have a copy of voter registrar's records in 1867 where both Francis Marion Barefield and James Barefield registered to vote on the same date, and their names are in sequential order on the document, and there are no other Barefields on the list. The age difference indicates that they could be father and son. We do not, however, know who James Barefield was married to (Francis Marion Barefield's mother) Any iota of help you might could give us will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks so much!
