I am in search of information on Francis Marion Barefield (1846-1928) who arrived in Grimes County, Texas, around 1870 with his mother and/or sister named "Sarah." He also brought along two of his sisters, perhaps named Martha and Adda. Francis Marion served in the Reg. 20 Texas Infantry, Co K from approximately 1863-65, per his Soldier's Application for a Pension. His wife, Ellen Singletary (1856-1941) also applied for a widow's pension. It is rumored that Francis Marion Barefield was not the name he was born with, and that(for some reason) his name was changed to Francis Marion before he entered the Infantry at age 17. It is believed this is the reason we are unable to find any information on him before 1870...because we do not know his birth surname. Francis Marion Barefield is my great-grandfather. My father, Billy Gene Barefield,Sr., is the son of Thomas Owen Barefield who is one of Francis Marion Barefield's children.
