There is a family story that a Mr. Jones came from Tennessee with the sole purpose of shooting my great uncle, Burbridge "Burb" Greene. I've been told that my uncle killed him in self defense near the trade grounds in Sherman (close to where the courthouse stands now). If anyone could find any information on this, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

Looking for the family of Robert H. HARRIS and wife, Sarah Ellathear (LOW) HARRIS, who lived in Grayson County in 1880 with their children. Sarah was daughter of Charles W. and Mary Ann BACHELOR LOW. She died in 1888 after the birth of a child. Have had no luck in finding any descendants, but noticed that one Jerall C. HARRIS and wife, Francis lived nearby in that census, most likely a brother of Robert. His children were Margaret L., Obedience, and Martha C. HARRIS. Possibly a descendant of this family would know what happened to Robert and Sarah's children.

Sherman TX - George Washington Mahan / Mayhan

G.W.'s death certificate states he was born in Sherman, 20 Jun 1854 which also states that his father was born in Texas (incorrect, actually was Arkansas) and mother correctly listed as born in TX. Her name and other details are unknown. George's father was listed as M.G. or possibly M.S. Mahan (hard to read). All censuses (5) for George list his father born in AR and mother in TX.

Family lore has it that his father and some uncles were killed during the war. He may have been involved with the Daniel, Cave, Cosner or Gregg families that migrated to or through Sherman / Grayson. These families migrated to Grayson county in the mid 1840's and then again in the mid 1870's. Some even migrated as far as NM and AZ. All were previous residents of Jackson County, MO.

I would like to think he is a part of Moses Mahan's family but I can find no connection to this well documented Mahan family.

Is believed to be a drover or Santa Fe trail guide. Moved to New Mexico in the 1870's. He married Roann Daniel in Moro Co., NM 1n 1878. Roann was from Jackson Co., MO and they returned there for a while and had a couple of children before returning to NM where the had a couple more children. Finally, they moved back to MO where they had MO children.

Some information about the Daniel family that remained in Texas can be found at the following link: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

Help,

Jim

The picture was probably taken somewhere between 1880 and 1900 (+-5years). It is either the Daniel family, or the Bailey family with a possability of the Cave(s) family. I'd like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the following:

Surnames field - please type each surname that is *in* your message text in the surnames box. These entries create an index which can be searched using the "Advanced Search" feature.

Classification - All messages that are asking for (looking for, wanting to find, etc.) information, regardless of what type of information, should be classified as "Query". All other classifications are for posting data..."Obituary" for obituaries, "Cemetery" for cemetery data, etc.

You can read more in the "What are the steps to creating a great post?" section of the Board FAQ (link located at the bottom of every board).

Whenever a new post is edited, I will send an FYI email to the author letting them know of the revisions.

If you have any questions or comments regarding this message, please e-mail me **privately**. Just click the "Board Information" link to find my address.

Anji

Does anyone know who might have the old records from this church that dissolved in the mid 1970's? The Funk family had their farm close to the church and the Basin Springs cemetery and we are praying that maybe someone from that family might have them. I am on the Basin Springs Cemetery committee and am in the process of plotting the cemetery and helping with the history of that area and Sadler.

If you have any information about Basin Springs Community I would love to hear from you.

Thanks

My great grandfather, William J. Fitzgerald, was born in Grayson County on Nov. 4, 1873. His parents were James (or John) and Mary Thornhill. Both parents were born in Ireland and deceased before William was 8yo. I believe that James and Mary were part of a group that immigrated from Ireland and came immediately to Grayson county. I believe that there are other Fitzgeralds in the area.

One family story is that they came to open a grocery store. They were Catholic and in the minority. The store burned down, and they moved. Possibly moving to Oklahoma.

I don't know of any other siblings, or family members related to this couple.

I really appreciate any help that anyone can provide. I seem to be at a dead end.

Seeking Obituary for William Henry Putnam, Denison Texas, Died Feb 4, 2001

Hello,
To anyone in the Denison Texas boards that may be able to assist, I am seeking an obituary for William Henry Putnam, late of Denison Texas. Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.
Thank You
Mark Putnam
Secane,PA
The 1930 census lists William H. Putnam as born in California, given his age (3 1/2) in late 1926. There is a William H. Putnam, b. 14 Sept. 1926 in California, who died Feb. 4, 2001 in Dennison, Tx. He was divorced in 1974 in Texas. You may want to obtain an obit for him to see if this is the same William H. Putnam. The social security death index says he obtained his ss card in Washington prior to 1951, so perhaps the family (or William in particular) moved to Washington state.

Re census records: due to the 72-year privacy law, the 1940 census won't be released until 2012.
I'm looking for any of the below listed Selman family.
1850 Boston, Franklin county, Arkansas Census, they are listed as:
Jeremiah M Selman 30/37 SC
Pennelia Selman 40 GA
William Selman 17 AL
Elizabeth Selman 15 AL
James M Selman 14 AL
John Selman 10 AL
Samuel Selman 8 AL
Antonio Selman 6 AL
Lucinda Selman 3 AL
Thomas Selman 1 ARK

Oral family history : Lucinda Selman was married (#1) to Tod Willet in Grayson Co., TEXAS. #2 married to Owen Donnelly Ft. Griffen...I'm not to sure if Fort Griffen is in Texas or Ark?? Mary Ann Selman was married to ----- Clarke. As Antonio is listed as a female in the above census....I'm wondering if she is Mary Ann Selman??

John Selman was married #1 to Edna DeGraffenried in Grayson Co., TX. and Elizabeth Selman was married to Jasper Newton DeGraffenried, at times he is recored as John or Jasper DeGraffenried.

I would like to find any records of the above people and then be able to fill in a lot of the missing data on all of this family. I will be happy to swap any information that I now have on the family with others. They most likely lived after the 1850 Census and possible in 1860's were in Ark., and I think most of the children were born in ARK and not AL??? Then some are found in the Colfax county, New Mexico and in Texas area. I'm sure some were in Grayson Co., TX.

Thank you
Pat Kennedy
pat-igree-kenn@charter.net

Tom Bean relatives

I am currently trying to locate families with New Brunswick Canad abackground that would have been possibly one of the ladies that came there to tell my family that there long lost son/brother etc.. Charles Bain/Bean said Hello from Bonham Texas probably in the 1860's-1880's Found a Mary Fillmore(fits the best) and a Leonard family seem most promising to have fit and lived in Denison. Does anyone know of any more information about his character, so far my family document and from what I have read about Thomas Bean seem to be almost the same person as Thomas is or should be his Mother's maiden name. there is howver Bean's in Washington D.C. that could be his relatives I am still in progress of seeing if that is plausible. I found Thomas C. Bean living in Grayson County, Fannin county since 1848 until his death which seems to me if he is my guy he would have had time to mature from being out on a ship so much, as is why he left home as his father told him to settle down, this fits Thomas Bean, also One other major reason I believe this is my guy is my guy sailed out on a ship, rumors came back he sold the ship, I'm guessing by age 26, 27 if Charles Bain/Bean sold a ship I'd sail into a nearby port in Texas coming from Trinidad, what would I do with my money, Land for sale in Texas, ? so he bought up enough land to make a Grayson County perhaps? started selling it by age 30 as Land records show, he makes enough to live off of becomes a land surveyor because he owns so much land, that he bought from selling his ship called Hebe (goddess of youth) changes his first name to his middle hides where he is from because he is mad at his family, becomes estranged from them, until he hits his 60's starts maybe running into people and finding out there from New Brunswick telling them to say Hi to hi family, knowing there Bain's but changes his name to our original spelling to Bean. My guy is no where to be found in the US or Canada, and this is the closest especially not knowing of a town called Tom Bean only knowing the town Bonham is mentioned in my family record written in 1898 by Thomas Bean's nephew George Clarke of New Brunswick Canada

They are all listed with the same father. Father was Henry Morris Carrell and the mother was Effie Fay Turman and Penuel.
The couple married in Durant, Bryan Co OK on 1 March 1929 and first child was b 30 June 1930... mother's was Effie F. Turman. When a dght was born on 29 July 1939 mother was listed as Effie F. Penuel.

Does anyone have data on Effie Fay Turman's parents? She was b 19 July 1929 supposedly in TX and d 27 July 1974 in Grayson Co TX.

Thanks, Bettye

HAMMAN/HAMMOND(S) FAMILY REUNION

HAMMAN/HAMMOND(S) FAMILY REUNION
JULY 25-27, 2008, LEXINGTON, KY

The Phillip Hamman Family Association made up of descendants of Revolutionary War hero, Phillip Hamman, and his wife, Christina Cook, residents of Kentucky for over 40 years beginning in 1782, will be having its Bi-Annual Family Reunion in Lexington, Kentucky July 25-27, 2008.

Hamman/Hammond(s) cousins will be descending upon Lexington from Alabama, Arizona, California, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and, hopefully, many from all parts of Kentucky, as well as some new cousins from other states.

Headquarters for the reunion will be the Four Points Hotel by Sheraton, 1938 Stanton Way, Lexington, KY. Reservations must be made by June 30, 2008 to get the special Phillip Hamman Group Rate. Visitors may check in as early as July 23 and get the same special room rate. When you call for reservations be sure to tell them that you are part of the Hamman Reunion group and want the special group rate.

Brian Ann Wells Arnett of Versailles, KY is coordinating the reunion and could use some help from any of the Hamman cousins in the Lexington, KY area. For more information, contact Doris Brown Rose, President of the Association, by Email: rose0303@att.net

You don’t have to be registered at the hotel to participate in the reunion events, but reservations for the Saturday night banquet should be made by those not staying at the hotel. You can contact Doris Brown Rose at the above email address to make those banquet reservations.

Friday, July 25, a group trip is planned to Mt. Sterling, then to Slate Creek near Jeffersonville, Montgomery County, to visit the site where Phillip Hamman and Christina Cook lived for almost 40 years, followed by a group meeting at 7:00p.m. Friday night for the sharing of newly revised family group sheets for each of Phillip and Christina’s children. Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. will be the business meeting for the election of new officers, followed by the sharing of new family history discoveries from members and guests. A highlight of the reunion is always the banquet on Saturday night. The special guest speaker at the Saturday night banquet will be Charles E. Darnell, descendant of Henry Cook, brother of Christina Cook Hamman.
The reunion is also open to all Hamman, Hammond(s), or any other variation of the spelling of that surname, even if you are not a descendant of Phillip and Christina.

Anyone who is a descendant of Phillip Hamman who is interested in becoming a member of DAR or SAR might especially want to attend this reunion. One member of the Association, Beverly Jay Martin, is a DAR Genealogy Consultant, has generously offered to help anyone who needs help with the application process. The service for Phillip Hamman has already been proven, as have the lines of each of his children, so it is a minor thing to get the papers in order for applying for membership in either organization. At the present time there are 88 descendants of Phillip Hamman in the DAR Descendants Database. Also, children from birth to age 21 can become members of CAR, Children of the American Revolution. The Phillip Hamman Chapter of CAR, located in Jackson, Breathitt County, KY, was named for our ancestor. James Bach Strohmeier, a former president of the Phillip Hamman Family Association, is now serving as its Senior Advisor/Sponsor. He would love to have some additions to his chapter.

This is only the fourth time in the 37 year history of the Phillip Hamman Family Association that the reunion has been held in Kentucky. The previous Kentucky based reunions were in Louisville in 1974, and in Lexington in 1982 and 1994. So, all of you Kentucky Hamman/Hammond(s) cousins might want to mark this date on your calendar and plan to attend this year’s reunion as it will probably be at least ten years before the next one will be back in Kentucky. Other reunions have been held in Chattanooga, TN; Little Rock, AR; Salt Lake City, UT; Seattle, Washington; Corinth, MS; two meetings in Oklahoma City, OK; two in Dallas, TX; two in San Francisco, CA; and four meetings in Alabama in the towns of Fort Payne, Guntersville, and twice in Huntsville.

The Phillip Hamman Family Association was formed in 1971 with the dedicated purpose of (1) gathering data about the family of Phillip and Christina Hamman and their descendants, (2) creating a giant database of information on the family to be shared by all, (3) locating the graves of all of the children of Phillip and Christina and placing markers on those that were unmarked or “poorly marked”, (4) to hold a reunion every two years, and (5) to publish a semi-annual newsletter as a means of keeping in touch with members on a regular basis. Because of the dedicated work of many Hamman cousins, all the purposes of the Association have been met, especially in the area of locating the descendants of Phillip and Christina. At the present time there are over 17,000 proven descendants who have been identified.

In recent years, the family researchers have also greatly increased their efforts to obtain information on the descendants of Valentine Cook and Anna “Susannah” Baughman, parents of Christina Cook, and the associations’s database on this family has been growing also.

CHILDREN OF PHILLIP HAMMAN & CHRISTINA COOK:
1.
Sherman's Black Friday - May 15th, 1896 Great Sherman Tornado

I just finished reading this book on the Grayson County TXGenWeb. It has lists of wounded and deaths from the tornado that were listed in the Relief Committee's books.

Are these records available anywhere? I am researching my great grandmother's family. On the list is a Miss Amanda Gray, wounded, a Mrs. Gray, wounded, and also listed a Mrs. L Gray as dying from wounds, and wounded L.L. Gray.

My great grandmother, Amanda GRAY shows up on the 1900 census, living with only her brothers. I would like to find out if this is the same Amanda mentioned as being wounded in the tornado. I have been unable to locate her parents on the census records, so I am thinking maybe the Mrs. L GRAY that died of wounds was her mother. Her father's name was Lafayette GRAY (I have an approximate death year of 1894 for him, but don't know the source), so maybe he is the L.L. GRAY listed.

Does anyone know of any death records related to this tornado?

Thanks for any information you can provide.

Cynthia

Working on the Jesse Mollenhour family of Grayson Co., Texas. Jesse was born about 1858 in Indiana and moved to Bates Co., Missouri in 1870's. He married, I believe a Mary Hart there and they settled in Grayson Co., TX in the 1880's. I believe Jesse and Mary had the following children: Charles, born 1875 in Missouri and married Tinnie Turney; Robert born 1882 in Missouri; Florence born about 1878 and Lula belle born 1881 in Sherman, Tx. Would like to learn more about this family and confirm my info above. I have conflicting information that Lucius Mollenhour was married to Mary Hart and the above were his children. Thank you.
Jo Ann Cummins
cummins@sbinet.com
Denison Daily Herald

Would any one know what years the Denison Daily Herald of Grayson County was publishing and where (if any) microfilm of the old publications might exist? I have an original paper from August 29, 1898 that contains the obituary of my G-Grandfather Thomas Jefferson Gudgel. It gave information as to where he was buried. With the kind help of this sight, I was able to visit the cemetery (Preston Bend Cemetery). His 3 wives are also buried there: Sarah Jones Gudgel, Mary Myers Gudgel and Martha Drisskill Allen Gudgel. Sarah died in 1884 and Mary died in 1891. Thomas and his wives resided between Old Woodville, Ok and Denison, TX. My hopes now are to locate obituaries on Sarah and Mary, if The Denison Daily Herald was publishing as early as 1884. The help received on my last posting was very helpful and appreciated.

I am searching for info about the families of Julia Ann (Truitt) Carrell(my ggranmother) and Elijah R. Truett. Elijah was the younger brother of Julia, their parents were Wm Ross Truitt(s/o John B.Truitt and Nancy Ross) and Catherine Morrow. Evidently Elijah moved to Grayson Co. between 1860-68 from AR, Julia moved her family there around 1875 after her husband died in Crawford Co AR. The best info that I can gather is that Elijah married Elizabeth Marie Thomas, their children were James Lee,Wm M.,Laura Ann,Walter A.,Maggie A. and Ida Mae. I have found info of some of their burials in Oakridge cem. I would like to communicate with anyone interested in these two families.

I need a lookup in marriages and obits for Blanche Streetman. Her maiden name was Ellis. She married three times, Sugshar, Sekdal/Sekdol and Streetman. In the 1920 census she was a widow and was recorded in Dennison as Blanche Sekdal/Sekdol. She was married to Frank Sekdol/Sekdal in Kansas. He died between 1910 and 1920. Her father, Alexander Ellis received a pension from the Civil War and Blanche took care of him until he died in 1927. Her signature as Blance Streetman was found in his Civil War Pension file. I found an entry for a death record for Blanche Streetman for 9/20/1965 in Grayson County.
Thank you!
