I may be descended from John Wells [Sr] (~1775-1845) and Mary Polly Hudspeth (1775-1852). John Wells [Sr] is a brick wall for us -- we know nothing of his parentage, siblings, birthplace, birthdate or middle name.
His daughter may have been Clara Wells who had a son with John Oliver Rogers named James Alfred Rogers. I am looking for a connection or confirmation of some kind. James Alfred Rogers is said to have been born in Sharp County, Arkansas.

In 1900 TX-Wood-Precinct 2-0140-Image 7, Lizzie Brooks enumerated as enduring seven births and five kids were still living. In that household were: Ambrose J., Lillie, and Charles J. Older siblings William and Cora were married and in seperate homes. No Alpha and/or Omega? In 1910 Wood-Precinct 2-0126-Image 27, Lizzie's surviving kids totaled four. That's accurate 'cause W. M. Brooks (4 Jul 1876 - 9 Nov 1907) has findagrave memorial in Mineola, Wood County. J. S. Brooks (16 May 1849 - 4 Jan 1927) and Henrietta Elizabeth Cannon Brooks (1 Jan 1855 - 13 Dec 1944) also buried in Wood County. Cora M. Adrian (6 Nov 1879 - 2 Aug 1950) buried in Fairview Cemetery of Denison, Grayson County. Ambrose J. Brooks (1882-1920) buried in Canton, Van Zandt County. No doubt you are aware Charles James Brooks (22 Jul 1889 - 27 Jan 1959) buried Bexar County? Lillie (nee: Brooks) Brandon escapes me!!! She survived her spouse James Milton Brandon (2 Jul 1886 - 24 Sep 1934). He's buried in Van Zandt but there is no double headstone. The parents settled in Wood County for their lifetime. I understand why! Very scenic, serene, and tidy. I'm not related!

My grandmother's father was CJ (Charles James) Brooks. I know his parents were Joe Brooks and Lizzie Cannon. According to my grandmother (Dorothy), the children were Cora, Alpha and Omega (twins), William, Charles and Ambrose. I have been having trouble finding any information on Joe Brooks (born in Georgia) since there was also a Josiah Brooks in Texas at the same time (who also moved from Georgia). Also, I am told that Alpha died young, and Omega lived to an old age and was a teacher, however, I have found no actual records of her.

I'm so glad you replied! I wasn't sure since your posting was from three years ago. I have found the same vague information about her (and her sisters?) being raised by someone else. I thought I found something about an accident with her parents, but I can't be sure now. I am just getting back into this research after a hiatus. What have you found on Polina Camden and Richard Glass? I believe those are Martha's parents (but not sure if biological or adopted).

Designation "Number exists***, **Death F" in Texas Birth Index

Many people have been confused by the designation "Number exists***, **Death F" in the Father's Name Field in the Texas Birth Index.

I emailed the Texas Department of State Health Services and according to them:

This designation is actually **DEATH FILE NUMBER EXISTS***, and it means that the baby was deceased. At the time that the birth certificate was data entered, the only way to make the notation in the electronic record that the baby was deceased was to enter this in the father’s name fields. The actual birth certificate will show the name of the father if that information was available, and the birth certificate will be stamped "DECEASED."

This format is outdated, however, and no longer used.

Note: Several people have pointed out to me that Texas has made mistakes with this designation, so use good judgment and further research when you see this designation in the Index.

I am a little slow getting there but I found something interesting. (You may have already found it?) In the 1880 census in Louisiana was "C.C. Criswell, M.M. Criswell, J. Criswell, M. Criswell, A.V. Criswell& S.W.". Well, how about a Martha Ham and Charles Criswell getting married in Lincoln, LA.? (Louisiana Marriage records, 1851-1900.birth,marriage, & death) I was the one swearing that Martha Kyle had not died in Atlanta. I thought M.M. was Martha Kyle.-- please forgive me!

She is reported as being the first person buried in the Whitemound Cemetery. I have taken photos of that cemetery and can not find a marker for her. I am looking for a record showing the location of her grave. I am only 1 of the estimated over 2,500 descendants in Texas and have not seen that on any other Ancestry.com page. I have a good supply of photographs on my 1-Lackey Family Tree! Attached are some photos of markers I found at this cemetery.

Did you ever get what you needed ont he VanWinkle book? I have a great resource, and was finally able to answer what everyone has been hearing about for years, searching because they heard Sarah Jane A. VanWinkle was indian.

She was not full blood, and I can't say what kind, but her grandmother was the last in the line traced back to the 1700's when she was born, only gave birth three times, lived a very long and full life. But nothing on her parents or family, her name was a taken name, as there are no birth records or other genealogy related to her. She had only a first and last name, Nichols, first name Sarah.

I believe she was the full blood native american, and because of that, Sarah Jane would be classified as an indian because she was daughter to a half, making her one fourth, and that met the standards.

Details I don't have, but at least we now know about her parents, and theirs, and there is so much of a story just looking at the places these related families repeatedly moved between. Mostly between Texas (collin/McKinnery/Lamar) and in Illinois, (St. Claire, and several others side by side).

Not sure if you got all you wanted, but if you still need, let me know and I will send you what I have. We have some real heavy hitters in our early settlers, before there was even the united thirteen colonies.

I am wondering if someone is willing to look at the marriage record for Owen G Dean and Ruth Seaton married 22 Dec 1987 in Grayson, Texas. The certificate number is 167686. I am wondering if the record lists how many previous marriages Owen G Dean had.

Thank you,
Betty Mayer

Thank You for all the info!
I'm not sure when they was in texas.
Some info that has been passed down was that Roy use to play with Alice when they was young when they lived down there. But he didn't know that she was his half sister.
So he must of been kinda young. Then they moved back to Iowa which in 1880 I found Hattie & the boys.
Thanks Again!

Your message was written long ago, I guess but I wonder if there is anything we can help each other with today. I am reaching the same line. It has been a hard search for me-- most answers are "accidental". Ha. I have 2 queries: #1, When and where did Samuel (my line) die? and #2, who are Charles' parents? One person said maybe Ambrose, but I haven't confirmed that yet. I have been doing all my family lines so haven't got far in the 7 or 8 years I have "toyed" with this hobby. Thanks for whatever way we can work together on this line.

I am still working on my in-law line of Criswells. I think I found Charles and family in Louisiana in 1870, although I was led to believe Minerva (m. to Charles & mother of the four children) was killed in the burning of Atlanta,GA. My "brick wall" is Samuel's death date and place. In 1920 he was a widower, living with his daughter and his son-in-law,the McClungs. I cannot find him after that. Can anyone help? Thanks.
Josiah and Margaret Hart Bell

I am looking for any information on Thomas (possibly William Thomas) Bell b. btw 1781-1790 in either South Carolina or Kentucky. At some point he settled in the area of Noah’s Fork of the Duck River which was located in what became Rutherford co. TN in 1803, Bedford co. in 1807, and then eventually Coffee Co. TN in 1836.

He is on the 1830 Bedford County census as head of household with 7 males and 7 females. I am trying to connect him to the individuals below and prove that they are all one family unit. I found him on the 1836 Coffee County tax list with no white polls so age matches up. He is listed on the 1840 Coffee County census with 3 males and 4 females. According to Goodspeed’s History of Tennessee, Coffee County Thomas Bell was one of the early settlers of Coffee County’s 3rd district which was originally part of Bedford County. He no longer appears on the 1850 census for Coffee County but there are a number of interesting names enumerated in his former place in District 3.

1.	Family #349 William Nivens and Jane “Jennie” (Bell) Nivens b. 1816 in Tennessee. They married in 1834 and also appear in the 1840 Coffee County census. They owned property on Noah’s Fork near the Thomas Bell estate. The reference I came across stated that some of the land may have been inherited by William’s wife Jane who’s father’s name was Thomas and that William also purchased some of it that her brother John had inherited. There is a John Bell listed on the 1840 Coffee county census that would have been the right age to be one of Thomas Bell’s sons from the 1830 Bedford county census. Jane Bell Nivens also falls into the right age category. William and Jane eventually sold their property and moved their family to Green, Lawrence County, Missouri about 1853. They both died in Missouri but several of their children eventually settled in Alvord, Wise county, Texas.
2.	Family #352 James Baker and Mercy (Bell) Baker b. 1813 in Tennessee. Mercy Bell Baker falls into the right age category to be one of Thomas Bell’s daughters from the 1830 Bedford Co. census. These are my ggg-grandparents. They were married in 1838 and were living in Dekalb county Alabama in 1840. By 1843 they are in Coffee County. They eventually moved to Green, Lawrence county, Missouri around 1853 then on to Alvord, Wise county, Texas.
3.	Family #354 Thomas Bell (also William Thomas) b. 1825 Tennessee and Sarah (Crosslin) Bell. I have seen a lot of conflicting information about date of death for Thomas Bell and who his father was but according to an entry I found in the Coffee County, Tennessee County Court Loose Records he passed away in 1851.
4.	Family #355 James L. Bell b. 1830 Tennessee and Elizabeth Bell b. 1788 Virginia. Both their ages fit to be the youngest child and widow of Thomas Bell from the 1830 Bedford Co. Census. By the 1860 Coffee Co. census there are no longer any Bells living in District 3 so I am unsure what happened to them.
5.	Family #357 Josiah Bell b. 1818 Tennessee and Margaret (Hart) Bell. Josiah and Margaret were married in 1845. Josiah Bell falls into the correct age group to be one of the sons of Thomas Bell on the 1830 Bedford Co. census and possibly living with his brother John on the 1840 Coffee Co. census. Josiah and Margaret eventually moved their family to Green, Lawrence, Missouri around 1853 and then eventually on to Grayson Co. Texas. I also came across a reference to a Hart wagon train from the Bedford/Coffee county area that left for Greene co. Missouri in the fall of 1852 so perhaps this is how they all ended up in Missouri. Greene and Lawrence are neighboring counties in Missouri.

Many of the children of these individuals share names such as William, Thomas, James, John, Jane, and Elizabeth. Mercy Bell Baker named one of her sons David Joshiah as well as naming her youngest son William Lafayette. The Lafayette is shared with James Lafayette Bell, youngest son of the younger Thomas.

As of yet, I have been unable to find any information online regarding wills, deeds, probate records etc that would tie these people together.

Any information on any of these individuals or family lines would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Amber
He is also known as Uge or Ugene or Eugene Chesley Way. On the last census schedule I have for him, which was in 1920, he was enumerated in Cooke County with his wife Lucille Juanita Felder Way and a son by a previous marriage, Elmer Dewey Way.

I'm wondering if obituaries were common place in Grayson County in 1933. I know in some areas they were still not common place. The reason I ask is that I was wondering if anyone had access to obits from that era to see if there was an obituary for Eliza Holt Harrison, may be under the name Mrs. Charles or C. M. Harrison. She died on August 7, 1933 in Grayson County and what I want to know is if her children are named. She had 2 sons and 2 daughters, the names of the two sons and her eldest daughter Belle, I know and I have info on all of them. Her youngest daughter, in the census records appears to have the name Lou or Lue but the writing on those is not the best to be sure that is her name. I have been unable to trace her and so I wondered if there was an obit for Eliza or her husband Charles M. Harrison who died in Grayson COunty on Feb 6 1932 that might have her listed.

Thanks

Richard Holt

His death certificate viewable/printable online https://familysearch.org/ You'll need to setup a "free" user account for access. Per the certificate, he died in Grayson County but the usual residence was in Dallas. His body was removed to Bentonville, IN for burial? He was married so that may have been the wife's homeplace? He and Aunt Mamie were in Indiana for 1940 census so he likely met his bride there? She's on SSDI: Elsa M. Cramer (17 May 1904 - 9 Jul 1998) with last benefits paid to an address in Fayette County, IN.-same county where Bomar reportedly buried. They evidently married late in life so I doubt there were children? Too bad, talent should be passed down!

I just saw this post and am interested in knowing more about Mr. Cramer if you have more information. I also studied with him at Austin College from 1954-1957 and a couple of years after graduation. I am interested in creating something to put in a rehearsal room at AC in his memory so he will not be forgotten in years to come. I would also like to know if he was in Sherman when he died and where he might have been buried. Thanks for any help you can give.
Sincerely,
Frances Anderson
