John F. Henson

John F. Henson, my GGGrandfather. Depending on the census you go by, he could have been born in 1826 or 1830, in one of the following states: Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, or North Carolina. (In the 1930 census, my grandmother had listed United States for her father's place of birth, so obviously, they weren't sure either!) Alabama has been the most frequently listed so I have tried to go with that and I am getting nowhere.

This is what IS known.

His full name was John Fletcher Henson.

He shows up consistently, on the census as living in Gonzales, Texas in 1860, 1870, & 1880. I can't pin him down before that. He was a farmer.

He married Mary Ann Thompson in Gonzales in 1854, they had 4 children: Sophia, Martha, Jefferson & Frances.

He married Maria Louise Cole in Gonzales in 1878. They had the following children: Addie Bell, John Fletcher, Robert, Lillie, James R. and Carrie Louise (my grandmother, the youngest).

Maria Louise is listed as a widow in the 1900 census so John had to have died sometime between 1893 (Carrie was born March of 1894) and 1900.

So, does this ring a bell with anyone? I have to go slam my head on the trunk now.

roilr
I understand that the communities of Harwood and Ottine used to be known for their springs and was wondering if somebody could tell me if there's any buildings still standing that were once related to the springs. I understand that Harwood used to have a hotel, is this building still standing? I spoke to a lady from the Gonzales Chamber of Commerce who provided me with some information and she suggested I contact this site.

Josephine and William A. Snell probably came to Gonzales County about 1890, from Nevada County, Arkansas. In 1930 they are living in their son's household, William Elmore Snell. I am searching for their dates of death and burial location. Also looking for any descendants of this couple. Josephine was the daughter of Rachel F. Hamilton and Stephen Isham Tyree. I am also looking for the two sisters of Josephine, Mary E. Tyree who married John Gibson in 1870 in Hempstead Co. Arkansas and Eveline Tyree.

(Please do not reply to hotgenso. Please respond to me at austinea@swbell.net) This couple was married in 1874 in Clinton, DeWitt County, Texas, but lived in Smiley, Texas. Matilda Eveline said she lived there all her life until close to her death when she lived with her daughter Julia Pearl Henry Quinney in Stockdale. William P or W.P. or Will supposedly died in 1892 in Georgetown, Texas while working for a surveyor there. I cannot find any information about this man's past or much of anything about him. Would love any information or leads. ~EA

He participated in the Siege and Battle of Bexar for which he received 640 acres land for service. He served in Capt. Fisher's Infantry Company I, 1st Regiment at San Jacinto and was a member of the Somervell and Mier Expeditions in 1842-43 and captured and imprisoned in Perote Prison. He had a home in GonzalesCo and land in the Bexar land district.

July 5, 1849 Adam Mosier was awarded 640 acres in Kinney County for his service at Bexar.

I have hand searched all of the avalible census records in Gonzales and Kinney up to 1880.
Isham Lee BAKER

According to unsourced data on a few on-line family trees, Isham Lee BAKER was born in Mississippi or Tennessee in Feb 1826; married Mary Shoemaker in Cooke County, Texas, in 1854; and died in Smiley, Gonzales County, Texas in 1909. His wife, Mary SHOEMAKER, was supposedly born in Germany in 1839 and died in Gonzales, Texas in 1867, after bearing five children: Abraham, Jesse Hardin, James Henry, James Thomas, and Mary Ann BAKER. I'd very much like to corroborate or correct these data, find out more about Mary's SHOEMAKER family, and locate Isham's and Mary's burial sites. Searching on-line databases has proved futile, and any help will be greatly appreciated.

I noticed a map indication of a Clark Cemetery down toward Nixon past Leesville. Is anyone familiar with it? I drove the road and saw no indication of any cemetery and assumed it to be on private property off the road perhaps. I have Clark kin from the area and thought some might be in an old family cemetery like that one. Paricularly: Nicholas Clark, wife Susan, son James J. Clark, etc. Thanks for any help.

I'm working on a large research project that must include images of my subjects. For this reason, I need an image of Texas Judge and member of the Rep. of Tex Supreme Court William E. Jones, aka Fiery Jones. He moved to Gonzales County, Texas, in 1839. He represented Gonzales County in the Sixth Congress of the Republic of Texas during 1841-42. In 1842, He was captured by the invading Mexican army commanded by Gen. Adrián Woll. Later he represented Gonzales County in the Eighth Congress in 1843-44, and in February 1844 he was appointed judge of the fourth district court and also served as associate justices of the Supreme Court until statehood. If any decendants out there have an image (portrait, painting, photo, etc) or know where I can obtain one please let me know. I have already tried the major Texas archives image collections with no luck.

Thank you

In the Texas Death Index, he's Aaron Emmy Drewett, death cert #38195.

I believe he came to Gonzales County about 1947. Aaron was a 68 year old widower, so I'm guessing he came with someone from Louisiana or came to live with a relative/friend in the Gonzales area.

He was related to Teddlie, Wilson, Dorman, and Harris families of Louisiana. His wife, Evelyn Wilson died in 1936 in Rapides Parish, Louisiana. Their only child died
in 1947.

Thanks in advance.

George Miller, Jr. was born 1857, Ruth Virginia Arnold was born in 1873. Their children were: George, Froney, John, Andrew, Henry, James, Ruth Virginia, Daniel (or Samuel), and Mary Lucinda. Froney married Samuel Fox Mills in 1912. Does anyone have more information about George and Ruth? I would really like to find out more about this family. I know they were on the 1920 Lavaca CO census, but, I have not been able to find them on the 1930 Census.
Thank you so much for any help. Glenda Baker

Need look-up in Gonzales County records

To Someone who signs herself as R and has an email of anonymous volunteered to do lookups, I can find no way to contact you.
I am in California and I called the County Clerks office (830) 672-2801 to order a copy of a marriage certificate. The woman I talked to said there was no such marriage record for William B. Guinn and Lou E. Dowdle - 08/12/1867 -certificate #1015. I told her it was listed this way on the Gonzales County website, and she said, "Oh, they make mistakes all the time". I said, "but I have other proof that this is accurate, you must have it". She then looked under the bride's name and didn't find it, and said she couldn't look under the certificate #. That was it, as far as she was concerned. My feeling is that when they put everything on their computer, they missed this one. It happens all the time. But I couldn't get anywhere with her. It shouldn't be hard for them to look for it manually, but talking to them over the phone wasn't successful.
I would appreciate it if you would go to the courthouse and ask them to get the certificate out and make a copy of it. I will pay you for any expenses.
Peggy Guinn Bowen
Looking for information on William B. Guinn who was on the 1880 census in Gonzales County with his wife Luella I. and children Robert A. (1869), Harvey E. (1871), Seleta A. (1873), Martha E. (1875) and John P. (1880). I found a marriage record for William B. Guinn and Lou E. Dowdle in Gonzales Co. on Aug. 12, 1867. This could be them, considering the similarity in the names and the fact that their oldest child was born about two years after the marriage date. If you have any information on this family or are a descendant, I would like to hear from you.

HELP! I am trying to track down one of my ancestors. I'm afraid this will be a tough one with a name like William SMITH. Smith was a veteran of the Battle of Concepcion and the Seige of Bexar. He member of Wm. Logan's Company at San Jacinto. He was issued a bounty grant for 320 acres in Gonzales County (Thomas L. Miller: BOUNTY & DONATION LAND GRANTS) Certificate No. 2936. Family stories claim he went to the site of his grant to have it surveyed and sold, but he was ambushed and murdered. This was in 1838.
My William Smith was from New York and came to Texas in 1831. He deserted his wife and child in 1832. With so many "William Smith's" in the Texas Army, it's hard to sort them all out. Does anyone have or can find any information on this Gonzales County Smith ?

(as related in the old South Texas Hisotrical & Genealogical Society publication entitled Yesterdays), I don't know if that is a birth or death date as no year is supplied - evidently the marker is broken.

There are 45 graves in that cemetery of which 31 have markers and 14 are without markers. I have identified the relationship of all in that cemetery with markers EXCEPT Osbie. I don't know if Osbie is male or female and I cannot find he/she on any census.

Who is Osbie DICKINSON?

Roberts born in approx.1827 Ga. died 1906 Llano Co. His wife of 50 years Jane born approx. 1830 in Ark. died in Llano Co. 1900. Both are buried in Llano Co.
It is stated Charles C.
Murder of Dr. Stark P. Porter in Gonzales

I have been searching for many years for any information on the murder of my ancestor Dr. Stark P. Porter. He was killed in Gonzales, Texas, on or about 18 March 1865. Searches of the Gonzales County District Court records yielded nothing. Also, I have searched numerous cemeteries in and around Gonzales, all to no avail. The incident is mentioned in the book Trail Drivers of Texas in which trail driver Lake Newell Porter, a son of Dr. Porter, says that his father was killed in Gonzales. The only information I have found in Gonzales was a record in the Gonzales County Commissioner's Court records in which Thomas J. Pilgrim, J. P., was paid five dollars for "holding an inquest on the body of Stark P. Porter." Dr. Porter had been sheriff of Goliad County, Texas, from 1862 to 1864. His death may have been related to his Union sympathies during the Civil War. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
H. Martin Soward, III

The Pattesons are listed as household #268 on the 1860 Gonzales Co., Texas census, and as household #164 in the 1870 Gonzales Co., Texas census.

Does anyone have a complete listing of the children of George G.
Nancy WILLIS/John Turner TINSLEY - KY>Gonzales Co., TX 1850 to ???

I am trying to find some information on the above couple. Nancy WILLIS was the sister of my 3rd g-grandmother, Elizabeth ?Betsy? WILLIS. They were daughters of Hannah SETTLE and William WILLIS of Barren Co., KY. John Turner TINSLEY was the son of Elizabeth ?Betsy? Turner and Moses Tinsley, and I am VERY distantly related to John Tinsley through his mother. She was a SUDDARTH descendant, and so am I.

Nancy Willis and John Tinsley married 21 Jan 1826 in Barren Co., KY. They were on the 1830 and 1840 Allen Co., KY census, and then they apparently moved to Gonzales Co., TX. He was a physician. He died there 5 Mar 1878 and I don?t know when she died. I haven?t seen it, but she is supposed to be on the 1850 and 1860 Gonzales Co., TX censuses.

Their children were:

Fountain Gillespie Tinsley, married Sarah Almedia Davis [they were in Bexar Co., TX in 1880].
Mary G. Tinsley, married Jordan W. Sweeney; she died 19 Jul 1852.
Virginia Tinsley, married Andrew J. Moore [she died Jan 1865, Gonzales Co., TX].
Amanda Tinsley, married Crockett Jones [in Lavaca Co., TX in 1880].
John Willis Tinsley, married Dora Houston [in Gonzales Co., TX in 1880].

If anyone has any information on these folks, I?d love to hear from you. I?m trying to locate information on the WILLIS family. clarksha@swbell.net
