If someone knows him, please!!! let him know his hafe sister in Louisiana is searching for him. I mysefl just found "our" father 2-years ago. I am a volunteer researcher for the Texas Peace Officers Memorial. On 10 Aug 1969 Post Chief of Police Billy Tom GORDON died of a heart attack after assisting a deputy sheriff recapture an escaped prisoner. An obit in the Sheriff's Association of Texas publication reported GORDON was 48 years old and left a widow, one daughter, two sisters and one brother. Garza county records on-line report he was single and records indicate a son,Billy Dan GORDON, Date of Birth: 25 Nov 1946, Birth County: Haskell,
and a daughter, Janice Lynn GORDON, Date of Birth: 28 Jun 1951. His wife is listed as Emma Lee HARRELL. Information in regards to surviving family members would be appreciated. I will also post this query on Haskell county message board where GORDON was born.

Looking for information about my aunt Ruby Gerlene CARR (b:1897, TX). Ruby probably was born at or near Stephenville, Huckabay, or Thurber, Erath County, TX. Her parents were John Bennet CARR (b: 1871, AR) and Idella NORRIS (b: 1876,TX). Her parents lived in Thurber, TX in 1901. Later Ruby lived in Stephenville, TX with her mother and brother, Bill CARR, until about 1916. Ruby attended a Baptist church in Stephenville where she did a Graduating Musical Recital in 1915 with Lena WILLIAMS assisted by Katie PICKARD. She then married a RAY, maybe Dee Ray?? from Post, Garza Co, TX. She died at age 20 years about two weeks after child birth in 1917/18 and was buried at Terrace Cemetery, site 463, at Post, TX. I believe the baby died within a couple of years after birth.

Upper Red Mud School House

My name is Jo Lynne Stark and I am inquiring about the Upper Red Mud School House on Twomile Creek. I am looking for a photo of the building when school was being held there. I am putting together shadow boxes for family members who lived there, the Self family. The late "Dub" Self remembered actually attending school there and Murleen can remember the school as well. It has taken about three months to find the proper name for this school and the correct county that it belonged to. We had been searching under Kent County under the following: Catfish School, the Self Countyline School, and the Higgins School. We finally pulled a topographic map up that had the correct name of Upper Red Mud School on it. The Self family still owns land that is adjoining the land that the school house is on. The school is deteriorated now - a part of the roof has finally fallen in - so I was wanting to get copies of it when it was in its prime. If you could help me out on this, I would appreciate it. You can either email a copy to me or just let me know where I can find a copy to print off and I can do that as well.

Terrace Cemetery records show Mrs. Bulah Bird Pierce 1876-1929 and William Guy Pierce 1898-1918.

William and Beulah and family were in Jack Co., TX in 1900. In 1910 they were in Foard Co., TX. 1920 shows them in Garza Co. and Walter F was still in Garza Co. for 1930 census.

William Z Pierce supposedly died in Howard Co., TX in 1941 but can find no census records for him after 1920.

Any help with this family would be greatly appreciated.

Lester Roy and Claude E. Mason - looking for descendants of these families

In "Wagon Wheels A History of Garza County" is a 5 page story on the Lester R. and Eula Thomas Mason family. I am trying to locate descendants who might help me prove that Lester's was the son or grandson of William T. and Virginia Sparks Mason of McLennan Co. TX. Lester's cousin Claude E. Mason is also mentioned in this article and there was a Claude E. Mason listed as nephew in the household of Thomas J. Mason in the 1900 McClennan Co. census. Also in the household is Thomas' mother Virginia Mason.
This leads me to believe that Claude E. was a grandson of Virginia Mason and probably the son of deceased unknown parents.

Donald Edward Fraley, 67, formerly of San Bernardino, passed away Feb. 5, 2005 in Topeka, KS. He was born Dec. 20, 1937 to Thomas & Geraldine Ruth Fraley in Post, Texas. He served in the USN for 2 years. He married Janice Waltman in 1956 in California. He worked for Santa Fe Railroad as a machinist for 42 years in California and Kansas. He was a member of the Hoyt Baptist Church, American Mountain Men, International Association of Machinists, and the NRA.

Survivors include his wife, Janice; mother Ruth Fraley, sister, Jeanine Roberts of CA; sons Gary of Phelan, CA; Terrance and Kevin of Homer, Alaska, and Kenneth of Mayetta, KS; daughter Tracy Sumption of Homer, AK; and 11 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in CA this spring. In lieu of flowers, family asks that memorial contributions be given to Hoyt Baptist Church Bldg. Fund, 109 Highland Ave., Hoyt, KS 66440.

I am seeking any information on descendants of Lewis Arthur NANCE, snr, who came in 1905 to what is now Garza County, Texas after his death near Puerto de Luna, Guadalupe County, New México Territory (1903). His daughter Evelyn NANCE married James Morris NEFF and another daughter Lorene married Kelly SIMS. Other NANCE children were Elton, Lewis Arthur("Ott"), jnr, and Mattie Lois. Their mother who made the trek in 1905 was re-married on 10 May 1909 to a C C PIRTLE, and I think that her maidern name was Susan Elizabeth HAYNES. The NEFFs, SIMSes, and Elton NANCE appeared in Bee County late in 1920, as the NANCE land there was being sold after the August, 1920 death of Martha Lucress NANCE, née CALLIHAM, mother of Lewis Arthur NANCE, snr. My great-grandfather, Joseph Johnson NANCE, his younger brother, was administering the details. Are there any descendants of Lewis Arthur NANCE, snr there in Garza County ? I am just beginning my family research and am hoping someone in Post and the surrounding area will remember my father's family. My grandparents were Irene and Nonnie Rodgers. They owned a ranch near Polar which is now owned by my cousin, Nonnie Ward. There were 3 children: Novis, Rose Jean and Dan. My grandmother was the Deputy County Clerk in 1939 and County Treasurer in 1941.

I have located a copy of the book "Wagon Wheels: A History of Garza County" hoping that will jog some memories. But if anyone else out there has any information or any ideas where I can start, including anyone who can help me do the research there for a fee, please let me know. I live in Virginia now and can't get home to do this myself or I would!

I search for anyone who knows the ancestry of Mary Rachel MURPHY LYNCH PARR, my gr-gr-grandmother.
Mary Rachel MURPHY born May 25, 1839. Family tradition says she was born in St. Louis. I do not know anything about her parents. Mary Murphy was a communicant of the Catholic church.

She was married twice.
Thomas LYNCH was killed after the birth of their daughter, my gr-grandmother, Margaret "Nellie" Helen LYNCH on Jun 15, 1865 in St. Louis, MO.
In 1870, Mary Rachel MURPHY LYNCH married Pressley Osborne PARR. They moved from St. Louis, MO. to Texas. There were several children born to this union. I have the names of 6.

She died Jun 30, 1928 and is buried in Post, TX. I do have a picture of her tombstone, but am not sure which cemetery. I think she was living with one of her children in Post.

My name is Jennifer Bowlin Mengis. I am searching for my great, great grandmother, Julia Bowlin Copeland. She was born Shell, I believe. She would have been about 85 at the time of her death. She had several children, including James, William, Anna, Mary, Martha and George. (For reference purposes.)
I was told that she moved to this area of Texas and died here in the late 1920's. Do you have any means of checking information for Garza County to see if she in fact either died or was buried there?

I am in the same situation with her son, William H. Bowlin. He would have been in his early to mid 60's at the time of his death. He is also said to have moved to this area and died around the same time.

I am look for an Obituary or death record for Rosanna York London Turns. She died between 1914 and 1920. Rosanna Was married to Oscar Turns and They had one child named Pearl who was born in 1914. Rosanna may be listed as Anna Turns or Rosanna or Anna London in the Obituary. Rosanna's maiden name is York. London is her first Married name. She was married to Allen London who died in 1912. Rosanna married Oscar Turns in 1912 soon after the death of her first husband. I do not know if Rosanna was married to Oscar Turns when she died, The best guess is she died in 1914 but no one is sure. Any help here is appreciated.

I am looking for information on one of if not the first home built in post texas. In the late 1950's I believe 1957 there was a town celebration in Post, I believe it was the towns 50th anniversary celebration. There was a broucher that talked about the town and it's early history. It talked about a home built for the POST family that the town was named after. It mentioned the name of the man who built the home Huntley Davis was his name. Does anyone know if this brochure still exists in the city archives or with the city's chamber of commerce ? I would like to have a copy of the information. Huntley Davis the builder of that home was my great great grandfather. I appreciate any one who may know anything about this information. Gracie died about the age of 4. We don't have any dates to go onsince my grandfather Grady is dead. I have a ggggrandmother who is supposedly buried in Southland, Garza Co. Her name was Jane Ann "Jennie" Farrell b. July 23 1849 Va d. Aug 14, 1941 TX.
She was spouse to Joshua T. Farrell (a cousin). The entire family lived in Collin County and I have yet to figure out why Jennie would be buried way over in Garza Co.
Is there a cemetery listing for Southland? Or if it is a really small town could someone please give me the phone number for the cemetery?

Obituary for Melissa Pylant Lester (died April 6, 1931), wife of William Anderson Lester. Originally from Montgomery, AL, the Lesters moved to Grandview (Johnson Co.), TX; then to Post, TX in 1915. They retired from the farm in 1922 and moved to Southland.

Obituary from "The Southland Sun", April 9, 1931:

Funeral Services for Mrs. Lester Tuesday: Southland business firms closed Tuesday afternoon to pay final tribute to Mrs. W. A. Lester, funeral services being conducted from the Baptist church by the pastor, Rev. E. R. Stiles, followed by interment in the Southland Cemetery. Pall bearers were Lannie Bartlett, F. G. Browning, S. W. Gregory, Royal Saunders, S. N. Hendrix, S. L. Gossit of Garlynn. Flower girls were Mary Davies, Margaret Davies, Myrtle Stiles, Lois Hendrix, Myrtle Jernigan, and Lue Ella Stiles. Mrs. Lester became ill while visiting her son, W. P. Lester of Hackberry, passing away Monday. A resident of Southland for 17 years, Mrs. Lester leaves a host of friends who mourn her death. She was a member of the Southland Baptist Church. Survivors include a sister, Miss Mary Pylant of Southland; five children, Mrs. R. Q. Mabrey of Lorenzo, C. H. Lester of Tuscola, Mrs. H. G.
