US Customs Inspector Alphonse LEVY, d. 13 Dec 1901

I am a volunteer researcher for the Texas Peace Officers Memorial. On 13 Dec 1901 US Customs Inspector Alphonse LEVY was crushed between two railroad cars at Pier 39 in Galveston. He was reported to have been survived by his wife and six children. The 1900 census reports Alphonse Levy (born Jan 1840), wife Lizzie and children Mamie E Levy 22, Irene Levy 20, Ernestine Levy 17 & Ashley Levy 13. Alphonse LEVY married Lizzie GARTNER on June 2, 1871. I believe this LEVY is the same person. I need someone to check Galveston newspaper for more information, place of burial & any surviving family.
He was pronounced dead later in the day (4:30p.m.) also at Danforth Memorial. This was in Texas City, Galveston Co., TX. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Can someone look up an obituary for me?

Homer Layton was born 17 Jan 1930. He died in Galveston 10 Aug 1982 with his last residence (via SSDI) as League City. We have heard that he had children but don't have any other information about a spouse or the children.

Thanks --- Mark

Elmer E. Schreiber info needed

I am checking to see if the Elmer E. Schreiber who died in Galveston, Texas was the son of my granduncle, David Schreiber.

The info I have already found seems to show that it probably isn't the right one, but gut instinct tells me that it just might be.

The Elmer Schreiber I am looking for is a son of David Calvin Charles Schreiber and Nora E. Kain. He was born in 1913 in PA. According to the obituary of Nora Schreiber, he must have been in the military because it says that Elmer Schreiber, F2c, was stationed at the University of Illinois.

The only Elmer Schreiber enlisted in the military that I could find for World War II, was one from Texas born in the same year.

According to the Social Security Death index, the only Elmer Schreiber listed as having been born in 1913 was once again the one in Texas.

The SSDI info I have is:

b. 06 Sep 1913
d. 11 Dec 1999

If someone could look up the obituary for Elmer Schreiber who died on the above date and transcribe it for me, I would really appreciate it. I'd like to rule out this trail once and for all and find out if it's a false trail.

Elijah M. Lindsay 1917 Tennessee to 1952 Galveston

I'm looking for information concerning the death of Elijah Lindsay (17 July 1917, Briceville, Anderson County, Tennessee to 1952 Galveston). The only information I have about his death is that he was vacationing in Galveston with his family and disappeared while swimming in Galveston Bay. This info is from the following obit of his wife:
===========================
The Leavenworth Times
6 June 2005

Erika Maria Louisa SeidenstŸcker Lindsay Huckleberry was born on Aug. 20, 1923, in Grosswustervitz, Germany, which is near Berlin. She was the only child of Franz August and Meta Ilse Suhl SeidenstŸcker. As a young girl, she participated in a gymnastics demonstration group at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. Although her father, an engineer, managed to keep her out of the Hitler Youth (he was violently opposed to Hitler's philosophy), she was eventually conscripted into the German army, where her initial assignment was to run searchlights for returning German warplanes. When it came to the attention of her superiors that she had been a student of languages at the University of Berlin and was fluent in both English and French, she was assigned to translate BBC broadcasts into German -- in the hopes that information useful to the German military might be revealed. This took place near the Swiss border.

After the war, Erika walked almost 200 miles back to Berlin, where she was reunited with her mother and received the sad news that her father had died. She found employment as an interpreter for a handsome officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers -- Elijah "Al" Lindsay. Romance blossomed, and they were soon married. Their daughter, Julia, was born in Berlin. Al and his young family were transferred to Fort Carson, Colo., where a second daughter, Barbara, was born. Since Al's parents lived in Victoria, Texas, the decision was made to leave the Army and move there. A year later, their family was complete with the birth of their third daughter, Norma.

In 1952, while on a vacation in Galveston, Erika's beloved husband disappeared while swimming in Galveston Bay. His body was never found. Erika, who loved nothing more than being a housewife and mother, was forced to go to work to support her three children, then ages 5, 4 and 3. Her daughters remember that she was a very strict and structured parent, but there was never any doubt of her intense love and devotion to them. In her last days, she reminded several visitors (as well as Julia, Barbara and Norma) that her children were her whole life, and the years she spent raising them were the best years of her life.

In 1969, Erika married Gene Huckleberry. He passed away in 1972. In 1977, she moved to Leavenworth to be near Julia and Norma. She has lived here since that time, although Norma eventually moved back to Texas.

From 1952 until her retirement in 1985, Erika was employed as an Authoritative (regulations) Librarian at Foster Air Force Base in Victoria, and as a salesperson at a music store. She also worked in admissions for two hospitals, one of which is Saint John Hospital here in Leavenworth. She continued to translate German documents and letters on the side. She never returned to Germany, preferring to keep her native country in her memories.

She loved gardening, baking German cookies and candies and playing the piano. She did nothing halfway, always giving 100 percent of her effort and concentration to everything she did. Her German no-nonsense work ethic is a legacy to her daughters and grandchildren. She was a dedicated supporter of animal rights and a contributing member of the National Humane Society.

She leaves behind her three daughters, two sons-in-law, six grandchildren and three great-grandsons: Julia and Lester Dalton, their children Mary-Elizabeth Bonner and her husband, Tim; Patrick Dalton and his fianc/e, Regan Burleson; and David Dalton; Barbara Jouette and her sons, Dr. R.

Would SKS please look up an obit in Galveston for Philip Champagne, dod 5/15/1997.

My high school graduating class is celebrating our 50th Anniversary in 2008. We are searching for about 50 (out of 400) classmates with whom we have lost touch over the years.

This is a wild card, wild goose chase. But it is the most likely name I have found so far on the net.

Hopefully, if this is my Philip, the obit will say he was a native of Metairie (or New Orleans) LA. If this is my Philip I would be grateful for a copy of the obit.

Thanks for any assistance.

Carolyn Tregre

My gg grandfather, Patrick Blair, arrived in Galveston in 1879. I have found him on the 1880 census and city directory, but am more interested in determining when exactly he arrived, from where and possibly what ship. I know that he was living in Northern Ireland, but I do not know if the ship departed from Belfast or Liverpool. Also, his daughter, Gertrude Wilson Blair, was born here about 1884-1886. They were Presbyterians - any church records available? They were living where the Galvez Hotel is today. Since they departed in 1892, I consider myself lucky to be here - if you know what I mean!

Hansen arrived with a wife and a child. Does anyone have information that could help me? Thank you.

They settled in Iowa City, Iowa and belonged to St. Wencelaus Catholic Church. Family story says they left Germany and settled in Prague to escape Bismarck. Two sons were born in Iowa City, James and Bohumil/Bohmiet later known as Bert. Bert lived in Oregon and state of Washington. I find maiden name for Anna as Keza or Kriz listed in two different records.

Obit: Anna Staines

I am looking for a death record for Anna Staines. She was born in Galveston on March 6, 1853. She died of either yellow fever or small pox by 1860. Maybe her death was recorded in the yellow fever reports in the Galveston newspapers. I'd like to find her burial record

Mortuary record

I am looking for the mortuary record for Mary SMITH. She died in Galveston on Jan. 25, 1866. She was buried the next day in the Old City Cemetery. Her grave was probably covered over or filled in after the 1900 storm. I have a copy from "Record of Internments"
