Annie Jackson Waldrop was born about 1878, but I am not sure if it was in Frio. Their father was William Waldrop and their mother was Margaret Jane Broadway.
Does anyone have the book "Texas Masonic Deaths"? I am interested to see if there are any "ALLEN's" listed in the index. Specifically "A" or "Andrew" Allen who was at Marshall Lodge #22 1845/46 and and later possibly Nacodoches Lodge #2 and then Frio Lodge #399 where he was a member at the time of his death before 1880.

I've read the San Antonio newspaper account of his death, and all the article said was that his funeral was in Devine. I know that my g gf John Randolph Clinton and my g. uncle Albert Stewart were pall bearers. I would like to know who the others were. Does anyone else have an old family story of one of their ancestors participating in the services for this great man??
Thanks

Lester Pranglin married Bessy Henning in Frio Co., TX 5/24/1877. Does anyone have information on either of these people? There were several of them (Pranglins) buried in the Pearsall Cemetery. Lester is reportedly a cousin to Caven Bishop Woodward. Two Henning girls were being raised by their Aunt Mary Ann Woodward (John Gilbert's wife). So Bessy could be related through this Henning connection, because there are no known Pranglins on the Woodward side.

Would love somehelp.
Carol Woodward Noble
Newport Beach, CA

Catholic Cemetery in Moore

Hello, I am searching for the burial place of my great great grandmother named Plasida Martinez Gonzalez (her husband was Jeronimo Gonzalez) and three of their children Josefa, Innes (or Ennes) and Benita Gonzalez. Supposedly they were buried in either Moore or Pearsall.

As far as I know they were very poor migrant workers who were working in Frio county. They died while they were passing thru and they were just buried there -- I don't think they lived there for any length of time. Also, we think Plasida Martinez Gonzalez was full blooded Kickapoo indian.

I was not able to find them on the Frio county search (except for Benita, but I'm not sure if she is the right one because I think they are buried close together), and I think they died before 1965.

I took a trip down there last weekend and found out that there are two cemetaries in both Moore & Pearsall, so I'm assuming they were buried in the "Mexican" cemetery. I did not see their names in the catholic cemetery in Pearsall, so now I'm assuming they might be in the catholic cemetery in Moore.

Does anyone know if someone has a listing of the people who are buried in the catholic cemetery in Moore?

Any help will be appreciated!

Helen Morgan
I have been researching my Daugherty's of Kaufman County Texas. One line of Kaufman Co Daugherty's (not in my direct line) had a son William Cecil Daugherty who married Julia Oden and moved to Pearsall, Frio Co, probably to be near her family. They are in the 1870 and 1880 Census there.

The following was taken from an unpublished typescript An early History of Forney and surrounding Areas, by Mrs Emma Ritter. It is in the Forney Library:

Items from the Forney Tribune, 1889
William Daugherty and family and Mrs. McMinn of Pearsall, Texas (Frio County) were visiting relatives in Forney last week. (Sept. 1889)

Miss Lillie Daugherty of Pearsall visited Forney last week. (Oct 1889)

Dick Daugherty and Mother, left Friday, Nov 8 for their home in southern Texas.

Viola Daugherty attended school in Forney, while her parents were living at Pearsall, Frio County, TX. She was the niece of James M. Daugherty and Sallie Dunnica Daugherty. The daughter of William Daugherty.

George Daugherty, a polished young gentleman of Pearsall, TX is in Forney visiting relatives (Oct 15, 1889)

If you have anything on the Daugherty's who lived in Frio County, please let me know. I believe some of them moved to Culberson Co.

Thanks
I recently read an article from the March 19, 1926 Matagorda County Tribune, Collegeport Page, regarding my grandfather, F. L. Jenkins, making a trip to the Dilley area to purchase property in Frio County 11 miles west of Dilley and 71 miles southwest of San Antonio for farming. He was reportedly interested in farming Hegari, a feed crop. I would be interested in anything which would give me more information about this period of time and/or if there might be any old newpapers articles about my grandfather during the time he owned property and farmed in this area.

Hi!
We have found your web site very interesting and full of our families history. You have combined and made a great resource of information. Our family originated from Ben Duncan the first permanent settler in Frio County, 1865. Some of our family has obtained parts of his original land holdings in Moore. Through the years we have heard that one of the family ranches in Moore, off 462 and cr 1650 aka black creek rd was once called Rooster Hill. Can you tell us anything about this. We have heard it was named this from the war era, some say they heard that it was a bad place. Also that there was a military camp here and that a wagon of gold was buried in this area. Anything you could find would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You!
Any information of Rio Espada, supposed to be to the North of Palafox. This rio might have been some sort of stream or crossing. Jose de los santos was killed at some point near or on Rio Espada. He was an Indian, but of his tribe nothing is known. He was either Lipan, Mescalero or Comanche.

She had several son's and daughters. The information I have sometimes has the beginnings that they lived between Laredo and San Antonio, Tx. Any information will be truly appreciated.

Articles written by Ruth Higdon for the Pearsall Leader

Over the years Ruth Higdon was a reporter for the Pearsall Leader. She contributed several hundred information/historic articles about Pearsall, Frio County and their families.

These article were never cataloged properly, and were runined by rain because they were stacked on the floor of the old Pearsall Leader building.

However, I learned in conversation with Ruth Higdon before she left us a few years back, that she still had many articles in her possession. She was very possesive about those articles because she had loaned some of them out, and the people never returned them to her.

Now that she is deceased I am wondering who in her family now has those articles, and if they are willing to submit duplicate copies to Margaret Simpson (Frio County Gen Web Coordinator) for placement on the County Web Site?

Ruth was a wonderful historian, and any articles that could be shared with the general public would be wonderful.

I am surprised that their is no markers. Their names are, Pulaski Adolphus Thurmond (buried in '42) and Sarah Camile Colbath Thurmond ( '37). Hazel Thurmond Horak

Frio County History

I have come across a memoir my gg grandfather left behind in the 1930's. He rode the Chisholm and Western Trails in the 1870's. I am editing it with the intention of publishing it, but have run across a couple of questions in regard to it.

He speaks of spending most of the winter of 1877-1878 in Frio and Spring Counties, Texas. I am unable to locate a Spring County, and wonder if his memory failed him, or whether Spring County changed names or was absorbed into another county.

He speaks of spending most of his time "warming saddle" for the NOX brand that was operated by Meyers and Roberts. This was on the Frio River "near the town of the same name."

He also spoke of the "Southdown" country. Any idea as to its geographic location? If you could shed any light on these questions, or direct me to a person that might be able to help me, I would be grateful.

Thanks, Kirby Ross
I am in need of specific dates off of headstones in the Pearsall North Cemetery is where they are buried. Seems to be a family plot area. Block 90 lot 5.On the U.S. Genweb site and frio county links I can find where they are buried but not a death date. Names would be Alvey R. Strong, Ethel Strong, Eugene Strong, Eugene Homer Strong. Obviously I am not from this area and have no clue how far anyone who would be willing to do a lookup lives. If anyone can, I would appreciate the information very much and would be more than happy to try to return the favor where I am.

Their childrens names, that I recall, are Roger, Henry, James and Yolanda. Uncle Joe's mother, Rose, lived with them also. She was my grandfather's sister. My g-father's name was Frank Mercado. His wife's name was Enedina Trevino (no relation to the above) I think Uncle Joe's family may have some answers to my questions. Thank you.

Seeking information on Pioneer Families who were living along or near Siestedero Creek in Frio, Atascosa, and Medina Counties, Texas. My husband and I have copies of early abstract maps and are doing a biography on each of the families who lived in the vicinity of Siestedero Creek, who are listed on the maps. Many of these early families are related either by blood or marriage. We will be happy to exchange information. We already have information on a lot of the families. Among those we don't have any information of are: Anton and Meinard Andres, Thos S. Baxter, Sabastian Brook, W. C. Butler, W. Calloway, Julian Conti, Jacob Diadiker, J. E. and J. R. Dixon, T. Dunham, Henry Griffin and others.

Recently I noticed some names carved in some curbing around several graves at the Brummett Cemetery: H. C. Dixon, Orah Dixon, Bettie, May Winters, Julius Hompton, and L. J. Whitley. I believe H. C. Dixon was Hugh C. Dixon son of Robert Dixon and Louisa Jane Elkins Thompson Dixon Whitley. Hugh C. Dixon was born in 1879, died in 1906 and was married to Amanda Belle Davidson. Orah Dixon was a sibling of Hugh C. She married Wade H. Hampton. Bettie was Elizabeth A. Thompson, daughter of Louisa Jane Elkins and George W. Thompson. Bettie married Benjamin F. Winters and she is one of two with a marker. Can anyone provide information on May Winters and Julius Hompton (Hampton?). Could L. J. Whitley be Louisa Jane Elkins Thompson Dixon Whitley? Does anyone know where she was buried?

From Rattlesnakes to Road Agents/South of the Alamo

I recently purchased "From Rattlesnakes to Road Agents" by Frances Bramlette Farris, at a library book sale. In the next day or so I remembered a book I had ordered and started looking and found my copy of "South of the Alamo" They are essentially the same story, but edited by different people. "South of the Alamo" is indexed, which is great, but "From Rattlesnakes to Road Agents" has at least one chapter that is longer. I haven't compared all of both, but so far that one chapter is the only difference. Also "From Rattlesnakes to Road Agents" has some photos, but "South of the Alamo" has a family group sheet for McHenry and Louisa Thomas Bramlett (Frances's parents). For the Frio County researcher either or both would be useful to read and or own.

I understand there was a small Catholic Cemetery located where the current Catholic Church and parking lot is located, across the street from the old Catholic Church.

The new Catholic Church was built in the early 1960 mostly from funds collected from parishoners over a period of several years. I know this because my first wife (deceased) collected several thousand dollars to help build this Church.

Is it permissable to build structures over cemeteries, which are considered sacred grounds by most? If so, does anyone have a listing of the individuals who are buried there, or are their names lost forever?

Any help will be appreciated. Thank You!

If anyone is looking for John SLAUGHTER, he went to Cochise Co. AZ. He had been a TX Ranger, Confederate soldier, and rancher in early TX. He bought a large ranch in southeastern AZ in 1884. The ranch has been restored and is open for tours - it is near Douglas AZ. I do not know if he was related to Benjamin Slaughter of Frio Co., but he could be. If you need further info, the address is: Slaughter Ranch, Box 438, Douglas AZ 85608. There have been a couple of books written about him, but I don't know the titles. Just thought I'd post this here in case someone is looking for him and becaues I know there were Slaughters in Frio Co.

For those of you researching this family line--or other ranching/trail driving families in the early cattle-raising years of Southwest Texas, you will be greatly interested in this book which was written based on Charley Hester's memoirs. It is entitled "The True Life Wild West Memoir of a Bush-Popping Cow-Waddy" edited by Kirby Ross.

As I understand, Kirby is Charley's great-great grandson. Charley, at one time, was a "cow-waddy" for the Woodward & Oge Ranch and Hiler Ranch (to name a few).

This is a very well-written documentation of the life and times of this era. And Kirby has augmented these memoirs with extensive research to broaden and enhance readers' understanding of Charley's work and the cattle business, and the Hester family.

Carol Woodward Noble

I am looking for any information on a possible murder in Pearsall or Frio County in general that would have occurred sometime between 1963 and 1970. My husband is adopted, we are searching for his birth family, he was always told he was born in Frio County but has been unable to trace this back. He knows his biological grandparents were located in Yancy. He recently ran into someone that said there was this murder back then, that kind of ties into some of the stories he has heard from his adopted family and would definitely answer some of the questions he has related to the numerous scars and old wounds he has on his body that came from his childhood before he can remember them occurring.

Any information or hints on finding out information would be appreciated. He has been on this quest for the last 24 years with little progress being made.

Thank you!
