HeritageQuest has Rev. War pension record images

HeritageQuest, which can be accessed through many local libraries, has a Revolutionary War records section which allows access to many pension records. These are the actual images, not just indices or summaries. The images can be downloaded and saved. This is usually a free service through public libraries and is certainly better than paying the National Archives for copies.

I found records for Isaac Fisher (7 pages) of VA/WV, and others. This is a very valuable resource.
Arley Meadows

I had posted at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txfisher/lookups.html that I had:
"Early Days in Fisher County", 1930, Judge R C Crane, extracted from West Texas Historical Association Yearbook

"Railroads in West Texas", 1943, Judge R C Crane, extracted from West Texas Historical Association Yearbook

They were misplaced during TS Allison when we flooded in 2001; moved to another town in 2008; and, finally found after Hurricane Ike moved through our area.

Someone asked about scans of pages of one of these articles but the email was "lost" in our move. If that person will contact me again, I'll be glad to help out.

My email is ALWAYS at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txfisher/lookups.html as a lookup volunteer.
Julia Brittain

Don't know when/where met/married. After the 1880 census, never find him again.

Ann's first husband was William Henry Daniel/s born NC (both parents SC). They married in Lowndes Co, AL 7 Oct 1857. By 1900 she's widowed again, living in Milam Co., TX and the census says she had 4 living children of 6 total. We know of 2 Daniel children. Either the census is wrong or we're missing 2 kids, don't know if Blanchard or Daniel. She died after 1917, probably in Livingston, Fisher Co., TX where she was living in 1910 and where her son's family was living, but no records found.

thanks, Jan
Is there anyone in Fisher County that lives near the old Swedonia Cemetery and might be willing to look for and take a picture of the graves of James J (Jim Jake)and Louisa/Luisa Steele?

We have hit a brick wall with Jim Jake, as Texas does not seem to have a death certificate for him even though he died in 1923 when all deaths were supposedly recorded. We have a picture of his funeral which was at Swedonia Cemetery. We have the death certificate for his wife Luisa and it states she was buried in Swedonia so we assume they are buried together.

I live in Nevada and have been unable to travel to Texas to get this, so I would be very grateful if someone could help me out on this.

Thanks-
Kate Hinton-Burnette

Family information says my gg-grandfather Jim Jake Steele died in Fisher County on 26 June, 1923. The State of Texas Registrar's office says it isn't so. He had a place in Swedonia, and we thought he died there. He was born in Logan County Kentucky in about 1843. We also had another death date listed as 23 January, 1951, but that seems unlikely as he would have been over 100 years old.

We do have a death certificate on his wife Luisa Cymanthia Cockrell Steele dated 10 March, 1930. As far as the State of Texas Death index is concerned, she is the only Steele who has ever died in Fisher County.

If anyone has access to obituaries from that time, or has any information on Jim Jake-his life and death-we would appreciate you helping us unravel this mystery.

Thank you,
Kate Hinton-Burnette

In researching my direct line I have learned that several of the family through marriage were in Hamilton/Mills counties in the 1880 census, and then in Fisher in 1900 if not in 1910.

Wondering if there are other Fisher county families whose families were in Hamilton area about the same time.

Seems my direct line went to Roby, but some related family were in Roton and possibly Hobbs so anyone in the Roby/Roton/Hobbs area has potential to be connected to my family.

I find some of them in JP #1 in the 1900 census. Does anyone know for sure if that could be the Roby area?

Thanks for any leads,
Sue Dixey
sodixey@hotmail.com

Viser marriages in early 1900s

According to copy of a Dallas newspaper, Richard Washington Viser married an Essie Reid early June, 1910 in Rotan. Is there any marriage record for them in any book source?

Also any other Viser marriages listed? There were 6 children in total and all would have married some time after 1900 to about 1930. Only 4 of them listed in 1900 census, so I suspect the older girls were married by that census.

In addition, does anyone know of what papers would have existed around 1910 in Fisher and also what pharmacies were slso in existance. Richard Viser is listed twice in the census in 1910. Once his is listed with Sam and Nannie (Sneed) Viser as a druggest/pharmacist and 2ndly as a printer for a newspaper.

I do know that in the later 1910s Viser was arrested, charged and went to prison for doing something illegal as a druggest because someone contacted the governor about Viser being pardoned which must have worked because he eventually was pardoned and left prison prior to completion of his sentence. They claimed a hardship case because he had small children at the time. This is all I know so trying to fill in the holes. His wife later divorced him and she raised the children I believe.

Also what newspapers were in existance in 1910 in Rotan area? Are there any that survived and were scanned/fiched to preserve them.

If any papers existed is there any writeup of the Viser/Reid marriage in that paper?

Lastly what is the best way to request marriage lookups for the county. I am looking for any Viser marriages. The Viser name is very uncommen so any reference to any of them would be my line. Also Nannie Sneed had a much younger half sister Eula Neal. Any Neal marriages in the early 1900s?

Several of these children and spouses are buried in the Sweetwater cemetery in Nolan county where parents Sam Houston Viser and wife Nannie Permelia Sneed are buried. After Nannie died, Sam was remarried to a Margaret (Baskett) Davis but they had no children. Sam died first so when Maggie died, her children had her burried in the Roby Cemetery with her first husband (their father) and I believe some of the Davis children were buried with parents too.

This Viser/Sneed/Davis/Neal family seemed to bounce between Fisher and Nolan county at certain times making my research a challange.

Thanks for any direction,

Sue
sodixey@hotmail.com
I have a newspaper article that stated Henry Sap was murdered in or around Fisher County, TX. Probally in late 1890s. I know his widow died in Fisher County. the newspaper I found the info in was old (1904) and that give me hopes I might find some info in any newspapers that were operating back that far.Hopefully they have been put on microfilm and are stored somewhere.
Where would the town of Roby have been in 1900 and 1910 census

Hello all,

My very illusive Hatcher family lived in the Fisher county area briefly, between census takings, between 1900 and 1910. I can pinned down that they were there shortly after the 1900 census and were elsewhere by 1906.

It appears they lived in Roby while here. Can someone who is familiar with the 1900 and 1910 census tell me which census pages were specific to ROby. I am interested in seeing who their neighbors were for further clues.

Thanks,

Sue

Searching for information on Helen Meriba Parsons wife of T. L. Ware who is buried in the Roby Cemetery. I have that she was born in 1919 and that she married Mr. Ware after having married Floyd Copeland and then E. D. Thorne. I assume she is buried beside her last husband in the cemetery. Her brother-in-law, Ray Gene Copeland is also buried there. Any information would be helpful and appreciated.

I am looking for info on Elizabeth "Betsy" FISHER born abt 1812 in TN, daughter of John FISHER born abt 1780 in NC and Hester UNKNOWN born abt 1784 in SC.

Betsy FISHER was my 5xGGrandma. I want to find out her mother's full name and go farther back if possible. I'm curious as to how/why they ended up in TN.

I am also trying to learn about any rumored Cherokee or other NA heritage from Betsy or her parents. Her daughter, Nancy Sophronia KERSEY married Adam George MAYERS and both were apparently applicants (rejected) on the Dawe's rolls. They were reported to have had an "Indian style" wedding and there was much talk always about her being part Cherokee. I would like to track down the "why" behind all this talk, once and for all.

Any info appreciated. Thanks!

Her obituary says she was born in McCally, Texas, and my grandmother (her daughter-in-law) says she was from somewhere in West Texas, before they moved to Grayson County. Since there is no McCally, Texas, I am hoping that the obit should have said McCaulley, Texas, and that my ggmother is from Fisher County. She was born 4 May 1908, to the above parents.

I'm publishing a biography of G L Barber, who lived in Rotan 1907-1909. He had a store in town and I've attached a photograph of it from a family member. (Also at www.barberhome.com/RotanStoreOutside.jpg.) Some local knowledge would help me a lot with background information. His store is on the right, foreground.

"The First 107 Years..." says (p 59) the main street was "176 feet wide with two rows of chinaberry trees down the middle and hitching rails in between." Pretty clearly this is that street. But what street was that? Can anyone identify the exact location? The date of the photograph? At that time he was paying taxes on Lot 1 Blk 76 "Rotan, Inside," most of Blk 87, and Lots 5, 6, and 7 of Blk 218.

Can anyone help?

Alan Barber

Overby and Maberry Families in Fisher

Ancestors of Clint Chester OVERBY were as follows: father, Shadrack C. "Shed" Overby (1845 IL-1922 Fisher, TX); mother Sarah c. "Sallie" MABERRY (1858 AR-1941 Fisher, TX); "Shed" was the son of Anderson OVERBY (1800 TN-?) who married 16 Jun 1840 in Jefferson, IL, Elizabeth MINOR (1818 IL - ?); Anderson was son of Lemuel OVERBY, we think, and Sarah RIDGEWAY. "Sallie" was daughter of David MABERRY (1809 TN or KY-1891 Fisher, TX) married Mariah JONES (1832 VA-1911 Fisher, TX). Mariah's parents were thought to be Solomon JONES (1780-1856) who married Elizabeth BURNHAM or BOWMAN who died in 1836. The Jones were residents of the Ozark region of southern MO and northern AR and considered Newton Co., AR, their home place, it seems. David was son of, possibly, Abraham MAYBERRY (1763-?) who married 11 May 1791 Mary WOMAX. We would enjoy corresponding with anyone having links with these families.

From: ArtCanfil

Date: Monday, March 16, 1998 4:35 PM

Subject: Fisher County, TX query

Howdy!

I am looking for any information on the CANFIL family of the Rotan area,

Fisher Co., Texas and of Sweetwater, Nolan Co., Texas. My great-grandfather,

Charles CANFIL, who was born in Haddam, Washington Co., KS, moved to

Sweetwater and had a fair-sized ranch there around the first or second decade

of this century. At some time after that, Minnie MORRISON CANFIL, widow of

Charles' son, Lloyd Canfil, probably moved to Sweetwater from Richland, MO.,

with her two sons, Lloyd Earl and Arthur Jesse Canfil (the last being my

father, who is still living). Minnie's father was Jesse P. MORRISON, b. July

05, 1843, February 13, 1930. Jesse was a Civil War veteran, having served in

Co. C, 15th Texas Cavalry, CSA.

At some time another son of Charles Canfil, Arthur CANFIL, settled in the

Rotan, Fisher Co., TX area and became a rancher, marrying first Eula Bell

BOONE and later Tryphania KEY. (One living son of Arthur and Tryphania is

David Key CANFIL, now a professor at Oxford, England.) There was at least one

other son of Charles Canfil, Weldon CANFIL, who was also in that area.

My research is still very weak on this branch of my family, but I am trying to

correct that. Please email me if you have any information on the Canfil

family!

-- Arthur Jesse "Art" Canfil, Jr.

Half Moon Bay, CA

artcanfil@aol.com

aol.com

Joel and Millicent lived in Merkel, Texas. Joel Harvey Counts kept horses and other livestock at a ranch in roscoe. He died at is ranch house, in Roscoe, August 31, 1915. Their marriage license gives the names J.H. Counts and M.A. Nichols. Some older records indicate that her maiden name was Holt or possibly Hyer. She was a widow with two young boys, Lon and Will, when she married my gr-grandfather. It is possible that she may have owned property in Fisher and/or Taylor Counties. Her first name was Millicent.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Harvey L. Counts
Sierra Madre, California
