Obit - Susannah Elizabeth Patton Thacker

[I transcribed this from a photocopy of a newspaper obit. Unluckly there was no date or reference to which paper it was printed in.]

One of Fannin's Early Native-Born Daughters, Dies

She first saw light in the Republic of Texas - Born 1844

In 1839 there came from Kentucky a colony of emigrants who settled in different sections of Fannin and Collin counties. The Hampton and Patton families located on sections where sparkling water gurgled from living springs, and John M. Patton stopped at the mouth of Bois d' Arc creek where he and his young family stayed till 1844, when they located at Patton Springs, where Randolph is now located, and where he ran a small store for many years.

Texas had just gained its independence when these families reached its uncharted domain and was still a republic when the headright was granted that described the metas and bounds of this new homestead. Their nearest neighbor was at Bonham, then a straggling village, protected by the blockhouse which afforded a rendezvous from marauding Indians. By a treaty the wild Red men were prohibited from trespassing on this territory, but then there were savage visitors who still felt that the settlers were intruders who deserved annihilation.

Two children had been born in the Patton household, one of whom had died in infancy, and shortly after the pioneer cottage was builtbally logs, and consisting of a single room, a daughter was born on December 30, 1844, who was christened Susannah Elizabeth. Her mother was a daughter of Charles Hampton and wife, co-settlers in this community, who a little later moved to Collin county, and settled on Pilot Grove creek.

This infant grew to maturity in this pioneer section, innocent of the advantages of present-day conveniences, but managed to secure the elements of an education, and being an inveterate reader she read every book on literature, history and kindred subjects that she could buy or borrow. The system of schools was as primitive as the section in which they were located, being supported by subscriptions. Her knowledge of early history was phoneminal, and her familiarity with the changes that occurred was remarkable.

In early life she joined the Cumberland Presbyterian church, and by 1881 she joined the Methodist church with her husband, and remained a consistent member till her death, always being a loyal supporter of its institutions and doctrines.

She was married to James R. Thacker, October 30, 1868, with whom she lived for forty-eight years, his death occurring December 2, 1916, exactly sixteen years before here death, which occurred December 2, 1932. She lived in Fannin county all her life, practically eighty-eight years, except one year in Collin county in 1871, and two years in Grayson county in 1881-2.

In her girlhood one of the pastimes of the young folks was horseback riding, and she was familiar with the forests and prairies where luxarious varieties of wild flowers dressed the summer with riotous colors. The highways were broken with uncoutly surfaces, and the chief methods of travel was by ox teams or on Spanish ponies.

Her eight-five years of life in this community had seen marvelous changes. She was among the first white children born in that section of the county. She was one of eleven children, ten of whom reached maturity. One brother, Charles Patton was a victium of the Civil War, and another Tom Patton, lived through the fratricidal conflict. A sister, Mrs Martha Kirk, died last spring at the age of eighty. She is survived by three brothers, N.B. Patton and L.K. Patton, at Randolph, and E.L. Patton of Duplex. Four sons and two duaghters, J.R. Thacker of Hamilton, B.W. Thacker of Hockley, E.O. Thacker of Houston and R.O. Thacker of Randolph, and Mrs. Cora Davenport of Kilgore and Miss Julia Thacker of Randolph, besides fourteen grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at Randolph Sunday afternoon by Rev. Bob Oates of Randolph and the pastor of the Methodist church at Balley. A duet was sung by Leroy and Lonnie D. Martin of Whitewright, four and six sears old, great grandnephews. Pallbearers were nephews, C.W. and Jess Leaver, Frank and Varna Patton and Adolph Gray of Randolph and Lowell Watson of Whitewright.

Among the out-of-town relatives present were, John R. Thacker of Hamilton, Glenn Thacker of Carter, Okla., E.O. Thacker and wife and Miss Mary Nester McCrosky of Houston, Dr. N.D. Hampton of Ector, H.U. Colvin of Elkins, Ark., D.C. Watson and wife, Lowell and Kellos Watson, Mrs. Clarence Martin and three sons, Leroy, Lonnie D. and Morris Ray of Whitewright, E. L. Patton of Duplex.
I'm searching for information on a Martin family....there were 7 brothers I believe....all from Kentucky...moved to the Bonham area. I think one was named Clyde, another George, another Joseph. There father was named or called Noah. Would have been in Fannin County around the turn of the century (1900) since Joseph was 21 when he moved there.

My gr. grandfather was W.H.(Henry) KIRKSEY. DOB and POB unknown. He was b. possibly 1845-1865, in AL or TX. He married Martha Cumi HORTON Lee in 1885, Wood Co. TX. My grandmother, Mamie Kirksey (Labor) was b. in Monkstown, Fannin Co, TX,in Nov of 1887. Virgil, the youngest child of Henry and Martha Kirksey was b. in Fannin Co. TX abt 1896. Martha is a widow in Fannin Co. 1900 census. I cannot find records of Henry Kirksey's death or burial in Fannin Co. The children were all of minor age but I haven't found any probate or guardianship records. Census records of his place of birth vary between AL and TX. Henry is not in TX census in 1850-1880. There are 2 differant Wm. H. Kirksey's but one is married and both are at least 25 yrs older than Martha. I don't know if there are any tax or land records. If anyone has any knowledge of records of a Wm.H--W.H. or Henry Kirksey in Fannin Co. TX between 1885-1900, please contact me by e-mail. Thanks for ANY help.

I am trying to locate anyone who might have information on the parents of Mathew D. Sharb who was raised by an Anderson family in Fannin Co./near Clutter Point, TX.

Mathew's father was John Shorb (name was mis spelled in error to read Sharb and never changed) and was reputedly shot and killed either in Fannin Co. or near Denison, Grayson Co. TX. Matthew was born in 1895 and had a younger brother, Willie Shorb who was adopted and raised by the Wilder family. I believe Willie was younger than Mathew; so, the death of John Shorb was sometime after 189?. Mathew D. Sharb married Etta Estelle Bridges in 1920 at Clutter Point, Fannin Co. TX. Any information about Mathew's father or the family, Anderson, that raised him would be appreciated.

On the 1880 Precinct 5, Fannin TX census there is an Anderson Thomas Penuel family (indexed on this census as 'A.T. Punal'). Anderson is said to have died 1898 Ravenna, Fannin TX. Some Penuel children married and remained in Fannin. I am looking for more information related to the wife of one of his sons, Thomas Telford Penuel. He married Margaret Duncan in 1885 in Little River Co. AR. They may have been in Bowie TX about 1888 and then Dardanelle, Yell AR where they are listed on the 1900 Yell census. Margaret may have died about 1901. Does anyone know more about Margaret Duncan's family -- her parents' names and names of her siblings? Thank you.

I would like to give this photo to a descendant.

I have 2 other photos that may be related: Will HULSEY and Chalie YOUNG. All the photos were made in Honey Grove, TX. The handwriting on all the photos appears to be the same, so I think there is a good chance that all are connected.

If you are a descendant and would like these photos, please contact me - no charge for the photos. I just would like to see them returned to family.

Peggy Brannon

State Land Records indicate that one Collin McKinney was issued a land patent in fannin co. purchased from one sterling smith. the patent was issued on 29 Aug 1849. Can anyone confirm who this Collin might be? The famous Collin McKinney was in Collin County at this time and showed no record of land owned in Fannin County. Could some one check the deed for when collin sold the land who the wife is listed. This could postivily confirm or deny if the land was owned by the famous collin or perhaps my GGGGrandfather.

While looking for my own family burials I ran across 3 or 4 stones. Well some were wood. They were just across the Fannin County line in Collin County Along Bear Creek. Nancy and B Bradley. There were some wooden ones and stone ones that were unreadable. I took pictures of the ones that were easy to read with my cell phone. I do not remember the exact location. THey are under a tree in a field next to the road. If you look you can see them from the road on the north side. There is a gate directly in front of it. I think the road was CR 673

A while back I sent someone a picture of the James E Pearson family. It was among my gr grandmother's belongings. Now I am kicking myself, because I broke through that brickwall using the new Texas Death Certificates that are now on line. I can now fit him into my family. I don't want the picture back, I would just like a copy. I saved it to my computer but lost it when I had to do a quick restore.

James E. Pearson was married to Emma Lou Hather. They had 5 sons: Pearl C.; Carroll; Leslie; Orville W; John Maxwell.
John died in 1921 at the age of 14; Orville and Leslie signed the death certificates of Emma's sister.

I would love to find decendants of this line. I have had pictures of Emma and her sisters for years, just couldn't figure out what ever happened to them. I've now found death certificates on all of them.

Rhody Warren was born in Chickasaw County, Mississippi in about 1852 and was shortly thereafter orphaned. She was raised by aunt's husband, Ira W. McBee. McBee moved to Petty, Lamar county in 1869, bringing along his children and Rhody's brother, John C. Warren. However, the 1870 census shows no trace of Rhody in either Texas or Mississippi.

What happened to Rhody Warren?

Did she marry in Fannin county? The McBee's lived close to Honey Grove, so its entirely possible she was married or lived there.

Any help greatly apprecicated!

I know officially that Texas was part of the Confederacy, but there are usually areas that have leanings to the other side. Can any tell me if Bonham and/or Fannin County was sympathetic to the Union or the Confederacy?

My ggg grandfather spent part of the Civil war (August 1861 to September 1863) hiding in this area after his fort was captured by the Confederacy. I would think that a Union soldier could not have hidden his allegiance that long if the area didn't have Union sympathizers.

Thanks.
Michael

I am looking for a photograph of Richard H. Hall who died in Fannin County, Texas in about 1904. He left many descendants there. I had information that a photograph of Richard H. Hall and Rev. Benjamin F. Blanton had originally shown the two of them together but was divided and given to two different people . I would dearly love a copy of the Richard H. Hall picture and will pay for a copy. Another researcher told me about the picture and promised to send me a copy about a year ago but never did. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Shirley Roach King

In the records 2 children we did not know about were listed. One was Eliza Jane Corn HADDON (HADDEN?) Her husband was listed as William Haddon.

Hello All! I am looking for information about the land John Simpson had in Fannin County. Jensie was a slave he purchased around 1850 or so. She bore him two children Harriet(b 1855 in gainsville, TX) and Almeady(b 1857 in gainsville, TX). Before he left for New Mexico, he set them up in Bonham with land and money. I am really looking for information like where they lived, what last name jensie, almeady, and harriet used. General information that would make finding them easier. Harriet is my GGgrandmother and married a Cloud. Almeady married Bob Jones a well known rancher in the Dallas area. Thanks in advance!!!

I have been researching John W & Annie E Blankenship for some time and finally got a little breakthrough, but I need some help.

I have them in Lauderdale, Tennessee in the 1850 census.
They are in Lamar County, Texas in 1880 (Precinct 1).
Today I found them (at least I think it is them) buried in the Grove Hill Cemetery near Leonard, Fannin Co, Texas.

The listing is:
John W Blankenship - 30 Nov.1921-22 Apr.1910 a Mason
Annie E Blankenship - wife of John 20 Nov.1826-22 Feb.1902

In the will of D D Vaden (my wife's g-g-g-grandfather), he list Elizabeth Ann Blankenship as one of his children. I believe this is the same person.

John's parents are Josiah & Matilda Blankenship
Annie's parents (I believe) are D D & Mickey (Micha) Blankenship Vaden.

Can anyone provide me with any information on these folks.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

POW/MIA Korean War, Fannin Co. WISDOM

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Fannin County , Texas as his home of record.

Soldier: WARREN BACON WISDOM
Born: July 30, 1927. Caucasian
Date of loss: Feb. 21, 1952. MIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 137 families in Texas that have not been located. There is one family from Fannin County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (77 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
