Old photographs and cemeteries of Erath County Texas

Dear Genealogy friends and family,
I have recently began the task of photographing cemeteries in Erath County. I am also sorting through some old photos of Erath County. I am scanning all images to my website so that I can easily access and maintain them as well as to avoid the coast of starting a separate family website. This website is invitation only so that I can keep up with who is coming and going. If you would like a invitation to access the photos or if you have any questions please feel free to e-mail me at tkennedy@our-town.com

Happy Hunting

Vera Bell Lain and the murder of Willie Lawson

I'm looking for information on Vera Bell Lain. She was born in TX on Sept 2, 1890 and died in Oroville, CA on Sept 23, 1968. She is my great grandmother. She had a bit of a wild streak. At the time of her death she was married to Alvin Merrit Hyde. I seldom saw her or him as a child. I always called them grandma and grandpa Hyde. I was barely 10 when she died. There is a family story of her living with an excon who ended up beating my grandfather badly and raping his sister. He was arrested but the case never went to trial as he was murdered. The murder was never solved. The man's name was probably Willie Lawson. She was living with his family in Stephenville, TX around 1920.

There are lots of questions I have but, primarily, who were her parents and are there any news reports about this case in question and where might I find them?

Lucinda Mahan Loveless (1847-1898) of Highland/Round Grove

I am looking for any information on Lucinda Loveless 1847-1898 of the Highland Community in Erath County, particularly her maiden name and parents' names. She was married to Charlie Mahan from about 1869 until his death in 1876. She then married James Loveless who outlived her. Lucinda probably was married to someone named House prior to Charlie Mahan since she had children named House living with her and Charlie on the 1870 census. Census entries for her and her children show her as being born in both Illinois and Indiana. Lucinda was a founding member of the
Round Grove Baptist church and is buried there. Any help would be greatly appreciated and reciprocated. I have found quite a bit of information on Charlie Mahan, but Lucinda's origins are a brick wall.

1879 Shootout - old news item online - What were their 1st names?!

Hi,

I just posted an interesting old newspaper story from 1879 that reports a shootout in what appears to have been Erath County, TX. The town named was "Stevenville," but there's no such place. It says that Messrs. ROSS, ROBINSON and KEITH went to arrest a certain HOLLADY (later spelled HOLLADAY), and all 3 were killed. Then 2 more (it doesn't name them) were killed as well.

I suspect that this could have been the infamous "Doc" HOLLIDAY. Does anyone know the first names of ROSS, ROBINSON or KEITH? Who were the 2nd two victims? What happened next?

This story was scanned from an original old newspaper from my collection (I collect both ancestors AND old newspapers, and share my spare clues) dated April 3, 1879, though the incident reportedly occurred on March 30.

You can see it online here:

http://theoldentimes.com/moreblood79tx.html

I hope it of interest to Erath Co. historians and that maybe, just maybe, someone will be able to tell me those names, so I can add the information to my web site.

Adios!
Barbara Allen
http://theoldentimes.com
I am looking for information on my g.g. grandfather, Charles H. Mahan, born 1833 or 1835 in Georgia. He settled in Erath in time to be on the 1860 census married to Susan born North Carolina, 1826. By the 1870 census, he was married to Lucinda, born Illinois 1842. Any information on this family would be appreciated, and I will gladly share what I already have. Charlie died in 1876 and is buried at Round Grove, but we can't find the death dates or burial places of either wife.

Would someone be so nice to look up Mrs. Carr's obit in the Empire Newspaper on 24 Oct 1891. I believe she is Martha Jane Carr b: 1823 AL and that she was married to Stephen Carr b: 1823/24 AL. I think that she was the mother to William E Carr b: 1849 AR and is buried south of Huckabay TX at Oakdale cemetery.
Thanks
I am looking for any information on the family of Alexander Duke Cody and Annie Parks. I know they were married in Erath Co. before 1875 and had 2 sons:
Archie Frank Cody
Ivan Harrison Cody
Both married in Lamar Co. Tx.

I would like to know more about their siblings, Annie Parks family, and the family of Alexander. His father was William Serrial Cody who was the postmaster of Morgan Mill from 1878-1880. I know 3 of William's 4 wives. But according to one of my sources on the 1880 Erath Co. census he was married to a Dorcas F. (do not know the last name).

Any information on the Cody's and Parks would be appreciated and I will willingly share what information I have.

For about the last two years I have been working on researching the families who have loved ones buried in the Barbee Cemetery. Currently I have 995 graves listed. Through my familytreemaker program I have connected 511 of these by blood or marriage. I know that not everyone buried there is related, but I believe that there is more than what I have. I have a lot of information on the following families: Adams, Anderson, Atkinson, Barbee, Bennett, Berna, Bettis, Bramlett, Brown, Bryson, Burnett, Capell, Carroll, Chambers, Colbaugh, Currier, Dorris, Everett, Gee, Gilbreath, Huckabee, Jaggars, Kilgore, Kite, Knox, Landes, Looney, Lowery, Newby, Pittman, Porterfield, Prater, Richardson, Russell, Salyer, Shelby, Stephen, Stracener, Tackett, Thornton, Walling, Weidner, Whisenant, White, and Williamson. I have some information on the following families: Bradley, Brune, Clamon, Cole, Collingsworth, Cox, Davidson, Durham, Funderburg, Gibson, Gilbert, Gray, Hart, Harvey, Henry, Hickman, Hollingsworth, Howell, Johnson, Jones, McCamey, McDonald, Miller, Mills, Parrack, Pettijohn, Randolph, Regian, Robbins, Spears, and Wrights. I will be glad to share any information. I would really appreciate any help on connecting these families.

I have a studio photograph taking by Lennox in Stephenville about 1900 of a Mr. & Mrs. Watson. They were friends of my gggrandparents,John Calvin and Betty Scott Hickey. Unfortunately, there are no given names on the photo. John Hickey was born in 1851. So, if they were his peers, they were probably born about that time too. This couple appears to be 50ish or 60ish in the photo. The man has a long white beard. If these are your Watsons, you're welcome to the photo.

She lived with a family in the Stephenville area where she met and married my great grandfather. She was 16 at the time. Thanks, Donna

Looking for any information on James Duncan McCarty, Ernest Payton McCarty and Ovid Domongia McCarty, three McCarty brothers, all born in Louisiana before between 1860 and 1870 to Ernest Payton McCarty, Sr. (deceased before 1870) also born in Louisiana, and Georgia Ann Matthews, born in Tennessee (deceased by 1875). The boys were all in DeSoto County, Mississippi with their widowed mother by 1870, and were shown as orphans by 1880 (probably orphaned by 1875). The boys ended up in Erath Texas, we suspect to join family of their father, Ernest Payton McCarty (deceased before 1870). Any information on any members of the family would be greatly appreciated.

I am researching descendants of the Jones & Pate families who moved into Hood & Erath Counties from 1840, forward. Francis P. Jones had several sons and daughters who moved to the area from Obion County, TN, i.e. Mary Jones who married W. H. Pate. Francis had sons, John, Luke, Isham and Elisha Jones, daugther, Margaret, who married J.L.C. Long and dau, Abbie who married W. S. Wilson. I have a copy of newspaper article, Friday, November 8, 1957 from Empire-Tribune on Wm. Arch Jones, celebrating his 78th birthday at the Sunset Home. I know he was a cousin to my grandmother. I would like to know who his parents were. Any help, obits, etc. would be most appreciated. Thank you. Ann Carlton Oppenheimer

On page 78 of ERATH COUNTY, TEXAS CEMETERY INSCRIPTIONS VOLUME 1 collected & compiled by Weldon I. Hudson and Shirley Brittain Cawyer, there is a listing for the Holmes Brothers. It states: There is a private plot located about ten miles southeast of Dublin, Erath County, Texas, marked only; Holmes Brothers 1852-1879. The story is told that three brothers were hung on the Leon River for accused horse theft. One managed to touch the ground enough to live and eventually get loose. He fled to Ft. Worth, Texas. The other two were buried nearby, but were later moved to the present grave site by members of the family and the infant child buried with them. This story told to Weldon Hudson by T. O. Trice, a 63 year native of the community, October 26, 1968. Does this marker still exist? Who were the Holmes brothers? Does anyone know any more or have a different version of this story? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My maternal grandfather, Ervin Alfred Davis, supposedly had Choctaw bloodlines, through his mother, Lucinda Caroline GILBREATH. Trying to verify. Also looking for his paternal lineage, his dad was Richard Harrison Davis, son of George Davis and "Murray". Richard was b. in Mississippi and died in l933.

Any clues here, as well on Flora Isabelle Fulfer Davis, b. 1880 (?), of Jacob Fulfer and Minnie Doris, would be great!

Looking thru Texas marriages (1851-1900), I found a listing for a Bamah Boykin Crowe who married Lee Young in Erath County Texas on 13 May 1884. Also a Jane Boykin married a J. H. Cage on 12 November 1872.

I KNOW about Jane, having received info from a couple of sources. However, my Mother (who is 85) remembers my grandmother (Amanda Emily Boykin Barcroft Riley) talking about a Bamah Boykin. Mother thought this lady was a sister of Grandmas. Amanda's mother, Emily Medford Boykin, died when Amanda was about 4 and Amanda was sent to live with Lorenzo and Sarah Barcroft. When she was 8 years old, the Barcrofts formally adopted her. Her father, S. Boykin, remarried and her brother Sidney remained with him.

If anyone could shed any light about this particular woman, Bamah Boykin Crow, you have absolutely NO idea how thrilled I'd be. I have NEVER seen anything written about anyone with that name until I came across this listing.

Warmest regards, and MANY thanks in advance to anyone who can help!
Marjie (Riley) Lebens

(originally posted Oct. 17, 1996)

Charles F. STARLEY and Moses Ann (or Mary Ann) (EVANS) THOMPSON STARLEY settled in Erath county in probably 1879. Moses Ann's first born was William Alonzo THOMPSON. He was born March 26, 1868 in AL. His father (a G.O. or William THOMPSON) is believed to have passed away in AL.

The STARLEYS had six other children who were raised with William Alonzo THOMPSON in Erath county (probably Duffau). They were: Mary L. STARLEY, Lula, John M., Minnie L., Fred Evans, and Sally.

Looking for any records/info on William Alonzo THOMPSON and the STARLEYS. Know that William Alonzo married Henrietta Rebecca KILLION in Hamilton, TX Dec. 12, 1889. Also know that these two lived in and around Duffau, Hico and Hamilton, raising 5 children in the area and left for OK around 1902. I have found out that James M. KILLION died at the home of his son, a ? KILLION and is buried in Erath County, Valley Grove Cemetery. He died abt. 1915. His son lived in Stephenville at that time. Thanks in advance for any info.
Descendents of Samuel M King or Carter Beverly King

I am looking for descendents of Bert C. King. He was an attorney in Wichita Falls. His father was Samuel M. King. Samuel had a sister named Harriett Jane King ("Jane"). Jane was married to Robert D. "Tack" Holder. They lived in Somervell Co and Erath Co. Jane Holder and Samuel King and his wife are buried in the Morgan Mill Cemetery.

Tack Holder and Jane King had the following children:

Emmet
Mary Elizabeth
William Earl

We have tracked down descendents of Mary Elizabeth Holder but we have been unable to find out what happened to Emmet Holder and William Earl Holder We were hoping that their King cousins might have some insight.

We were specifically asking about Bert C. King as we know that Tack had contact with Bert up until Tack's death in 1933. But any help would be appreciated.

There were other connections between the Holder and the Kings. Jane King had a niece, Elizabeth C. Johnston, who was briefly part of the Holder family. She was the first wife of Park Frazier Holder (a brother of Tack Holder). She died of an unspecified illness.

Jane had a cousin named Hannah Louvenia King. Hannah married Marcus DeLafayette Burton. Their daughter Harriett Dorinda Burton was the first wife of Andrew Jackson Holder (another brother of Tack Holder). She died in childbirth.

Any help would be appreciated.
J. G. White

Info from the Social Security Death Index indicates J. G. White died on 18 Oct 2004, last residence Stephenville. I communicated with J. G. extensively 10 to 15 years ago when we were compiling Coldiron Family records. I am very sorry to learn of his passing. He had an avid interest in genealogy.

So that I may complete J. G.'s records in our Coldiron Family database, does anyone know:

1) Where J. G. died?

2) Where he is buried?

3) I have always known him as J. G. Did he have complete given names?

I would appreciate this information very much. Thank you.
