She had a sister named Flora McCorkle Who lived in Nebraska and her father was Durbin Grupe of Davenport, Iowa. All censuses before she moved to El Paso listed her name as Carrie.

Rufus Vertus Bowden was born in Tennessee in Jan 1867, married abt. 1892 in Missouri, Harriet Adaline Foote (b: Oct 1867 in Missouri). They had two children born in Missouri, Marian in Feb. 1893 and Adkins Foote Bowden in Jan 1895. Sometime after that they moved to El Paso where Rufus was an attorney. In 1900 they lived in the third ward of the city. They had another child, Harriet Adaline Bowden on the 1 Nov 1902. Sometime between the birth of the last child and 1910, Harriet Foote Bowden died. Rufus died about 1919, in El Paso I presume. I would love to hear from someone who know's Ms. Foote Bowden's parentage as I can't find her in any census except 1900.

I am hoping someone might have access to the 1909, 1910 and 1911 City Directory for El Paso.

I have a family that is there on the 1910 census, but the surname is inconsistent.

On the 1910 census, they are listed as Zona Henderson (42) and her daughter, Clarissa S. Henderson (7). Zona was running a boarding house in El Paso and listed as a widow.

By 1920 they were living in Deming, NM, and Zona and Clarissa were both listed with the surname Leggette. Zona was again running a rooming house.

Since I can't find marriage records for Zona, I am trying to see if she married (1) Henderson and (2) Legette. Of if the Henderson name is an error.

I am hoping the 1919, 1910 or 1911 city directories might list them and if the listing is actually Henderson or Leggette. Zona's full name was Anna Zona, and she varied it (Anna, Anna Z., A.Z. or Zona.).

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Norm Lewis

Johnson Margarita Rivera Obit

Rose Hills Memorial Park
Whittier, CA.
24 Mar 2008

During the winter of February 22, 1933, a "Muy Bonita" little girl was born from the love and marriage of Juan and Josefa Rivera. They named her Margarita. Born and raised in El Paso, TX, she attended Bowie High School. She later met and married Augustine Martinez. With marriage at such a young age, Margaret quickly learned such valuable traits as maturity and responsibility. These lessons in life would soon prove priceless when as a single parent she raised four productive and successful children of her own.

Her family's story began with two children, Raquel and Gabriel Martinez. In 1953, Margaret moved to Los Angeles, CA to join her sister Virginia. As Virginia's husband served his country in the military, the two sisters supported one another with the raising of their children.

On Dec. 8, 1955, Margaret gave birth to a son, Michael Martinez. She now had three children and had to make ends meet by working as a waitress at a local restaurant. Even in the midst of difficult times she found creative ways of bringing love and happiness to her children. They would play "Count the money" as she removed coins from a bag of tips she received from her job.

After many years of hard work and minimal pay, Margaret decided to set her sights much higher. Her target was the U. S. Postal Service. With more income, health insurance and retirement benefits, this job would be the solution to many of her concers. However, there was one potential obstacle. She was told that the test to qualify for this position was somewhat difficult; but not for Margaret, with her tenacity and commitment to faily, she diligently prepared and studied for this test and passed with a score far above average and enough to secure her new career.

On the 6 Dec. 1968, Margaret married Wilbur W. Johnson and from that union, in 1970 her fourth child, Kristie Lee was born, Secure in her career, she would often take time to travel with Kristie to her favorite vacation spots.

In time, as grand-children enlarged the size of the family. "Mom evolved to "Grandma". As Mom and Grandma Margaret, she continued to share her Love as only she could, with a very special intimate relationship with each and every member of her family.

Margaret retired from the Post Office in 1985. This transition allowed for more time to provide Love, Suppor, and to share LIfe's lessons with her family. This Love of an ever growing family was so obvious, for even at the Family's Annual Picnic and Baseball Game she would participate as umpire. Her position as an umpire proved controversial, for she often called Grand/Great Grandchildren safe on the grounds that they were just too cute to be out!

On Friday, March 14, 2008, Margaret was called by God as part of His infinite plan. She left a legacy of unconditional Love that is unbreakable within the family.

Margaret showed us how to "grow" from childhood to adulthood by her willingness to mature when children entered her young life, to "work to provide for loved ones, to "share" byalways giving to herself, to "understand and forgive" by offering a place to stay for all family, to "laugh, enjoy and support", as she rarely missed an event or function, to "pray and worship" through her Love in God. At the very end she even taught us how to die with dignity and peace with God and Family. May we continue to uphold the family values she instilled in us.

Margaret is survived by her four children, Raquel Davis, Gabriel Martinez (Priscilla), Michael Martinez (Evelyn), and Kristie Lee Johnson, twelve grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, one brother Francisco Martinez of El Paso along with a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.

Preceded in death by her parents, and sister Virginia Ornelas.

We will always Love and Honor her memory.

Probate for W. W. Richey 1932/1933

I need help finding a probate record for William Word Richey ... date of death May 19, 1932 (Webb County, TX, removal of body to Goliad, TX.) William Richey was unmarried. I think it possible that the probate was filed in El Paso because that is where his heir -- brother, Robert Dell Richey -- lived. R. Dell Richey had been county tax collector for about 16 years and a notice was published in the El Paso Herald-Post, March 22, 1933 that R. D. Richey was to receive an inheritance from his brother. It says that the estate of W. W. Richey willed to his brother R. D. Richey, former tax collector, is valued at $10,000 in an inventory approved in probate court. This notice was published March 22, 1933 on page 2, bottom of column 4. Can someone help, please? Please either respond to this message or email me at nd90952@aol.com. Thank you.

LAWRENCE J. CHRISS, ESQ ... possible nickname "Jack"

Looking for any information RE: Lawrence J. CHRISS, esq. born: UNKNOWN, death: sometime after Dec 1891, probably dec'd by 1910, El Paso, TX. It is possible that his nickname was "Jack" CHRISS. I know he was in El Paso, TX Dec 2, 1891 when he signed permission for his daughter Louisa Marie CHRISS to marry Frank Wallace JONES.

Feel certain that he lived on in El Paso, TX with his wife Canzady/Cansady aka "Sadie" or "Carrie" CHRISS until about 1909/1910. I cannot find this CHRISS family in El Paso, TX on the 1900 census. However, by 1910 his wife, Canzady CHRISS, is now in Bisbee, AZ and ... listed as widowed ... and ... living with her son Henry CHRISS (born TX), his wife Dillie CHRISS and their children (all born TX).

Also, right after daughter Louisa married Frank JONES they moved to AZ (abt. 1891). Next, about 1895/1896 daughter Rose or Rosa remarried and moved to AZ with new husband and two daughters by her first husband. Both Louisa and sister Rose or Rosa and their families are on the AZ census 1900 ... but not their CHRISS family members.

Looking for any information RE this CHRISS family:

1. Lawrence J. CHRISS, esq. (possible aka "Jack")

2. Canzady CHRISS (possible aka "Sadie" or Carrie")
born abt. 1842 AL (moved to Bisbee, AZ by 1910 census, died APR 1921 in AZ)... believe that this was a second marriage for Canzady ... (date of marriage possibly abt. 1874/1875, TX.)

and, sons:

1. Henry Phillip CHRISS born abt. 1877 TX (died JAN 1928 in CA) married Dillie UNKNOWN abt. 1904, marriage probably in El Paso, TX ... this may have been a second marriage for both Henry and Dillie.

2. John J. CHRISS (aka "Jack" CHRISS) born abt. 1880 TX (died JUL 1949 in CA)... first marriage in TX by 1917/1918 to Lillian UNKNOWN

Appreciate any information.

Howard Monroe SMITH, son of Walter (1862-1914) and Mary Smith, was born in 1894 and died in Feb. 1963. He married Thelma GREEN, and she may have died in El Paso also, but I am not sure. They had at least one son, Harlan Smith (1931-2002) who also died in El Paso.

Seek obituary for Howard M. SMITH, and place of burial. Also welcome any other SMITH information on this family.

Thank you!

Tami

I am searching for the family of five soldiers who was killed in the Korea War. When they entered service they gave El Paso County, Texas as their home of record.

ROBERTO COCIO*
Born: August 14, 1931. Caucasian
DOL November 26, 1950. MIA

FERNANDO L LOPEZ
Born May 31, 1906. Caucasian
DOL July 31, 1950 MIA

WILLIAM EDWARD MEEKER
Born: December 31, 1931. Caucasian
DOL July 25, 1950. MIA

SANTOS RAMIREZ
Born: November 1, 1933. Caucasian
DOL October 7,1952. KIA

IRA NEPTINE TAYLOR*
Born : June 23, 1910
DOL November 25, 1950. POW

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 140 families from five that have not been located. There are ** families from El Paso County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (77 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find these families. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating these families.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
I'd like to request an obituary lookup, if someone is available to do one. I'm hoping for an obit for Virginia Cadwallader Randel, who passed away July 17 1979 in El Paso. The Social Security Death Index indicates that her last benefits were in High Rolls, Otero, NM, so there also might be something listed there.

Thanks in advance!

Saviniano Madrid was my greatgrand father and I would like more information on him. I know that he was a Rough Rider in the Spanish war and was a wealthy landholder in the county of El Paso. He died in Ysleta in 1918, his first wife was Francisca Duran if you have any information on her that would be great too. I know she died in 1908. I live in California and have a problem getting information from Texas. From what I'm told Francisca Duran was or had Tiguas blood but I don't know for sure and don't know how I can find out. Any help would be great. Thank you

I am searching for and would like to make contact with Shirley Ann Gantt, who is the wife of Rickey Cadenna, and she is the mother of a son, Manual Cadenna, and a daughter, and she is the youngest daughter and 3rd child of Thomas Reid Gantt, who is deceased, and Vera Edwards Gantt, and she is the sister of Ruby and a brother, Thomas Reid Gantt, who is called Tommy. The birthdate of Shirley Ann Gantt Cadenna is December 21, 1951 and she was born in Houston, Texas and she lived in New Iberia, Louisiana and resided on Frisby Street from the years of 1958 to January 1965 and then she moved back to Houston. While living in New Iberia, Louisiana, Shirley Ann Gantt attended Elizabeth Forgery Elementary School from the first grade where we met in Mrs. Stella Morris classroom until the mid term of the 1964 to 1965 school year when she moved back to Houston, Texas. Shirley was a member of the Girl Scout Troop in the early 1960's. Any information would be greatly appreciated, thank you very much

UNSOLVED MYSTERY
My mother went to school with a Grace Fletcher when she lived in El Paso. Grace had two sisters one she remembers her name to be Ledia. She use to skip school with this girl and met Grace's boyfriend Edward Orellana. To my mothers amazement he had the same last name as hers which was rare there. She went to his home and met his mother and turns out to be her Aunt which she never knew and Edward was her first cousin! My mother (Maria Antoinette Orellana) cannot recall any other names and Edward's father was passed on at that time. (Early forties.) Mother told me Edward Orellana became a news paper reporter for a major paper there. And he did marry Grace Fletcher.

If anyone knows of any of these persons, please reply.

Warmest regards,

Nora

Want to contact anyone who has informaton on Frank Leonard Johnson. He may have been an Air Force or commercial pilot and possibly lived in El Paso at one time. He was born 8 Jan 1929 in AZ. Graduated from high school at Rantoul, IL in 1947. His father wss Oscar Marion Leonard and his mother's maiden name was Eunice P. Leonard. It is believed his family was living in Greenbelt, MD in April of 1942, based on his father's draft card information.
If he is still living, I want to contact him about our high school class reunion to be held July 13-14, 2007 at Rantoul, IL.
