Burial/ Cemetery Look Up Needed - Frances "Fanny" Benson Stone

I am hoping someone in the Italy, TX area can please help me. I am in California (orig from TX) but am doing research on my mother's Stone family line in Texas.

According to an audio taped interview of my great grandfather (before he died) he stated that his grandmother, Frances (Benson) Stone [w/o Isaac Newton Stone (1848-1937)] was buried in Italy, TX.

The interviewer never asked for more details so I don't know exactly where or even the date she died. She is listed with her husband and children on the 1880 census but it appears that by 1900 he is remarried for at least 3 or 4 years (he probably remarried in 1893 per my research).

Per the census, her estimated birth is 1852 in Tennessee but my great grandfather stated that she was born in St. Jo (St. Joseph I assume), Missouri.

Any help on locating her gravesite would be greatly, greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Charissa
Looking for descendants of Willis A. GRIGGS of Ellis County, TX

Hello All,

Is anyone researching or have any information on the descendants of Willis A. GRIGGS and his wife Mary Taylor HALLY or HOLLY? Willis A. GRIGGS was born in Giles County, TN in 1846 and moved to Ellis County, TX sometime between 1874 and 1878. Willis and Mary had six children, one son and five daughters. Their son was James W. GRIGGS (b: 16 Jan 1868 in TN) and he had three sons: Joseph Bernard GRIGGS (b: Nov 1894 in TX), Willis A. GRIGGS (b: 9 Aug 1899 in TX) and Earl O. GRIGGS (b: 16 Jul 1902 in TX). I am looking for a list of the children of these three sons. The following is all I have on them:

1. Joseph Bernard GRIGGS married Jewel (maiden name unknown) and had at least one child: Jay B. GRIGGS (b: 1921/1922 in TX). It is not known when or where Joseph Bernard died but in the “Social Security Death Index” there is a Bernard Griggs who was born on 16 Nov 1894 and died in May of 1973 in Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo, California, but it has not been confirmed that this is the same Bernard Griggs.

2. Willis A. GRIGGS (the son) married Josephine JOHNSON in 1927/1928 and died in Itasca, Hill County, TX in May of 1971. He and Josephine were buried in the Frost Cemetery, Frost, Navarro County, TX. No children are listed with them in the 1930 Texas census.

3. Earl O. GRIGGS married Annie LONG 1928/1929 and died in Frost, Navarro County, TX on 22 Nov 1980. He and Annie were also buried in the Frost Cemetery, Frost, Navarro County, TX. No children are listed with them in the 1930 Texas census.

The person I am trying to connect to one of the three above sons is Willis Lee GRIGGS who married Doris Maxine JONES. Willis and Doris had two children who were born in Tarrant County, TX in 1954 and 1956.

Any information that anyone has on this family would be greatly appreciated.

Frank L. Griggs
Email: frankgriggs@juno.com
URL: www.thegriggsfile.com

Looking for the gravesites of James Barrow (born about 1847) and Thomas Barrow (born about 1855). They were brothers and both were born in Florida. James is the grandfather of Clyde Barrow and after the death of his wife he lived with his brother, Thomas, first in 1880 in Grimes county and then in 1910 in Ellis county. Thomas is found living with his daughter and son-in-law in 1920 and 1930 census of Ellis county. His daughter is Annie Mae and her husband is Ezra Gothard. Ezra died in 1928.
I am trying to locate any of Perron Elmer Duncan's decendants. He was from Benton Co. Ms. married Lucia L."Clancy" ? about 1904.
Not sure if they married in Ms. or Tx.
They appear on the 1910 Ennis Ward 4, Ellis Tn census with 2 children and his mother Ester.
They are in Tx for the 1920 and 1930 census, Ellis Tx.
Ester is not on the 1920 census and I can't find her in Ms. so I guess she has passed by 1920.
Elmer and clancy's children were:
Donnie b. abt 1907, Reece b. abt. 1909,Perron abt.1919, There may be more children , but that is all I have found.
I would love to know about this family and did any of them move back to Mississippi. Elmers' Dad, Henry W. Duncan was a brother to our Grgrgrandmother Melinda Duncan Burge.
Who did Elmer's siblings marry and where are their children.I would love to know about Elmer and clancy's children and where they are living now.
Is Ester Duncan b. abt.1843 in Ms., (Elmers' mother) buried in Tx. or Ms.
So So Many questions. Sure would appreciate any information anyone could give me on our lost family. This research work seems to get harder and harder instead of easier. Thanks again, kntrygrannie from Ms.

Eli McJilton -death cert/obit for a 1860-1870 death -- availability?

Howdy!

I have followed McJilton and now his son Eli from Baltimore through western Maryland to Kentucky to Missouri to near Milford, Texas, and now I need to make 100% sure I still have the right family. (I got sort of scattered in the 1810s and 1820s with the hash mark censuses that don't have any names. LOL!)

Eli McJilton died sometime between 1860-1870 near Milford, but I'd like to find an obit or death certificate or something that might have his father's or mother's name on it.

I did find all the great information on the USGenweb site -- a great site, and the very first time in 1000s of names that I have ever found a WILL online. I was quite astonished!

Am I correct that:
#1 it's too early for death certificates in Ellis Co, and

#2 there really wasn't a newspaper in the county with that kind of information in it for obituaries? (I am guessing all this because family trees I've seen stop at Eli, even though I am pretty sure I can get a couple generations back from him.)

I don't actually care as much *when* Eli died, just that I have the right family still, and for that I need the father's and/or mother's names.

Thanks for any light you can shed on the availability of early records of Ellis Co.

Suzy

I am looking for a document that I just learned about that probably exists in Ellis Co., maybe at Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian Church, near Ovilla.

This document is titled
"Memories" of Shiloh Church Members by R. M. White

I believe this is Robert Macklin or Mecklin White who was a preacher at Shiloh church. Robert was married to Rachel Ann Craig who died at age 26 from something like a flu epidemic. I think her infant daughter died of the same about the same time. Robert did remarry and I don't know the name.

I am hoping that someone in Ellis Co knows of this document and can let me know how to get a copy.
Also I would appreciate names phone or email addresses for anyone who may know about this document. I suspect it contains information on several of my Craig relatives.

Thanks to all. Bob
Thomas and Henry were confederate veterans and are buried in Myrtle and Mountain Peak Cemeteries respectively. John Nelson is the nephew of Thomas and Henry and was listed in the 1910 census living with his daughter Daisy Bell and sons Guy, Felix, Denny, and Woodson. Also I am looking for the daughter of Henry, Josie and her husband J.L.Sills. In 1931 they were living near the town of Bardwell. I am also trying to find the parents of Daisy Williford who married Jesse Alsup, the son of Henry Alsup.
Any information on these settlers of Ellis County would be appreciated.

Alice (born 1908 - 1979) is buried in the Waxahachie City Cemetery. Her obituary will provide clues for me to try to locate surviving family members. I would be very grateful for a lookup of her obituary. Donald died in 2001 alone and without family members' knowledge and I'd like to confirm his identity and help "reunite" the family by providing the location of his resting place and the details of his death. Thank you!

Obituary needed for Jack Franks and/or Julia Ann Crow-Franks

I was wondering if someone would be willing to look up an obituary for Jack Smith Franks (d. 3-27-1943 in Midlothian TX)or Julia Ann Crow Franks (b. 2-2-1866 in Nashville, Davidson Co. TN and d. 1-15-1935 in Midlothian TX)? Recently, I recieved the death certificate for Julia Ann Crow Franks and learned her maiden name was Crow. Her father's name was just listed as "Crow". Unless he was the forefather of the whole "single name" thing, like "Cher", I imagine his first name was not known to the son who signed the death certificate. I have been unable to locate anything else on a Julia Ann Crow. If someone could help me out I would be forever grateful. Thank you.

Marriage Look Up Please

Can someone please do a marriage lookup for James M. Harwell and Dora Lee Seals? They are said to have married about 1902 according to census records, but a cousin has a 2nd wife having married about 1902. 1910 Ellis Co, JP #7, list J.M. and Lule Harwill married 8 years. I think this is Dora "Lee" Seals, and it was just transcribed poorly, but I need to confirm that there isn't a 2nd wife and that it was Dora Lee Seals who married James M. Harwell about 1902. A cousin gives the marriage date as Feb. 22, 1903, but no source or place.

Dr. Green was charged with the murder, and indicted by the Ellis Co. grand jury in 1906. In 1907, the indictment was dismissed. This was all the info in the Dallas Morning News and I found none in the Dallas Times-Herald or the Waxahachie Light. Thank you. Claudia

Hi:

I am researching Irene Smith b. MS 1833

Mother of B. F. Smith b. MS 1854.

Father of Pearl Smith who married a man by the surname of Daniel.

I am interested in this Irene Smith as I believe she to be the same as listed on the 1870 census of Copiah County MS.

I believe her husband was J. C. Smith who died between 1867 and 1870.

Her name was Arrena but she changed it to Irene. I believe her maiden name to have been Ryalls.

One of their sons, last one born, in 1866 is listed as Henry H. Smith.

I believe this to be my grandfather who lived in Navarro County Texas. He went by Mr. H. H. Smith. Census shows he was born in MS and both parents born in MS.

His full name was Henry Homer Smith.

I appreciate any assistance but would be most anxious to talk with any descendants; especially, if they elaborate on the family's genealogy.

Thank you

Trying to locate a Smith family who may have lived in Ellis county c 1886-89. John Wylie Gallion was a teacher at White League School in one or more of those years. Can't find where he married Agnes Smith. Agnes Smiths family lived in Freestone Co. in 1880, but Smiths could have moved to Ellis co where Gallion met her in those years.

Other Smiths were Agnes' twin brother Samuel A Smith born 1860 Ark, Benjamin W. 1854 Ark, 1843 Tenn, mother Martha Jane Smith 1824 Tenn, D.L.Smith 1819 NC. Children born after they moved to Texas are Thomas J 1864, James W. 1866.

I saw the charges to get copies of death and marriage records from the county clerk's office.

Is there any index to the death and/or marriage records in Ellis County that is free and open to the public? In person, via email or snail mail?

I've run into some counties that charge as much as $22 to do a look up, whether they find anything or not.

Thanks.

F.M. and Nettie Sargent

My paternal gf was born Cecil Hayes Sargent in 1893, and adopted in Dallas at 6 mos. in 1894. his parents were listed as F.M. and Nettie Sargent. There was a F.M. Sargent living in Ellis Co. around this time. I have a letter post marked from Nettie from Houston, in 1894. Any information or possible leads would be appreciated. Cecil was adopted by Addie and Joe Moore who lived in Hutchens (near Dallas).
Joe soon died and Cecil was raised by another family. Nettie and Addie were reportedly good friends. I'd love to identify this paternal line.

I am attaching a picture of part of the large Hendricks family which helped to settle Ellis county in the 1800s. Is there anyone who knows some or most of these people? I think the matriarch in the chair is Caroline Malvina Hendricks. Any help is appreciated.
Thank you.

Toni Seaver

Hyde Surname In Ellis County

My Grandfather Joseph Hiram Hyde married Bamma James in 1896 in Ellis County. He was orphand as a child and I am tyring to make a connection to 2 Hyde families living in Ellis county between 1860-1900. One family Jas Hyde first listed in the 1860 census and the William Hyde family first listed in 1870.
There may be a connection through the William Hyde family. He had several son's who listed their livelihood as livestock traders in Okalhoma, Chickasaw Indian Territory during the late 1800's early 1900's. Bama was from Pontotoc County, Okalhoma in the heart of the Chickasaw Indian Territory. This may be how Joseph met Bama due to his travels from Ellis County to the Indian territory with his relatives.
Anyone having any information concerning the hyde fmailies in Ellis county please contact me at hydee@sbcglobal.net

Help re Telico Cemetery Ellis Co TX, SIMMONS

Hello to all. I am hoping someone may have some further information on the Telico Cemetery in Ellis Co TX, i.e., are there any overall pictures and/or a possible survey being contemplated? Apparently it is well-kept and fenced per the description given from this site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~txecm/

From recently acquired information it is believed my 2g grandparents are buried there and possibly some of their children.
John T. SIMMONS b ca 1833-5 d last day of Feb or first day of Mar 1899.
Elizabeth/Lizzie nee McMINN b Dec 1846 d 25 Dec 1907.

They were married in Ellis Co Nov 1859 and had 1100 acres outside the town of Telico, where they lived when J.T. died 1899, and Elizabeth is living with son Frank there on the 1900 census. Some of the children also possibly buried in Telico Cemetery would include the Frank above w/wife Bessie probably after 1930, also daus Mary and Maggie/Margaret who both died after 1892 and possibly before their parents, and a son Bradshaw d after 1900 census at which time he was age 17 and living Telico area with mother Eliz and brother Frank.

Since the Telico Cemetery is apparently still being used, might there be local records for burials there, and/or a local funeral home with records? If there is a kind soul living in the vicinity of Telico who might be interested in checking the cemetery location and taking at least a picture of the entryway and the cemetery marker plaque, that would be greatly appreciated. I would be able to cover costs for gas and film/digital disc, postage etc.
Many thanks in advance for any help/suggestions as how to accomplish this. I am posting this to the Ellis Co Board, but also subscribe to the mail list so a reply to either one of those would be fine. Regards,
Aileen in WA
quickcrunch@aol.com
Maloney Cemetery

At the request of my 81 year old mother, several weeks ago I began looking for the location of the graves of my grandparents. We were very surprised to learn that my ggrandfather is buried in Maloney Cemetery near Avalon. Additional research revealed that there are three other relatives buried there including my gggreandparents. Since I am staying with my mother near Avalon, we drove over to the cemetery. I couldn't believe my eyes. It is completely grown up and the sign is almost gone. I was over there about two years ago and it was OK. But what really concerns me is Country Thunder. This is a four day county music event that is held in the area around Memorial Day. The stage is right across the road from the cemetery! It pretty much got rained out this first year, but I am concerned about future years with predictions of over 100,000 people attending. Anyone else here have relatives buried there? I would hate for the old headstones to be damaged by the crowd.

Here is an idea you may be able to use in your family research. Someone on a board that I subscribe to mentioned a commencement program from Vanderbilt U. Since my dad graduated from VU, I decided to check into whether or not VU had an archive service. They do. I have received a copy of his college commencement program, and I have ordered a photograph of his graduating class. This could be applied to any college or university in the USA. There are thousands of artifacts out there waiting to be copied.
